4.25⭐️ OK, so I’m a sucker for a good mafia romance, but something about an Irish man hits different.
I loved the way this book started, like we took off sprinting🤣 Riley escapes the mafia life and reluctantly shows up to her sister’s wedding even though that sister is arranged to marry the man Riley’s had a thing for basically her whole life. And then? Surprise her sister runs off, so Riley’s forced to step in since they’re identical twins. This was such a fun setup for forced proximity and arranged marriage, but with a little taboo twist. We get those “we shouldn’t be doing this” moments because technically, Finn is supposed to be marrying her sister. But let’s be real these two had chemistry that could not be ignored. Even during the ceremony, that “you may kiss the bride” moment? Yeah, they both knew they were fucked right then and there.
There’s a ton of angst in this (which I LOVE).That delicious kind where you know they’re meant to be together, but they keep pushing it down because it feels wrong… until it very much doesn’t. These two fall fast and hard because of their shared history, and I liked how naturally they just fell into step with each other. They just made sense, even though they were fighting their feelings for pretty much the entire book for totally different reasons, it was kind of beautiful watching them give in to that, even if the circumstances were an absolute mess ( I mean hello he’s still engaged to her sister even though she’s MIA🤣😭)
This was action-packed, fast-paced, exciting and spicy as hell. Like, these two had a 24-hour fuckathon and it was one of the hottest things I’ve ever read. Finn’s dominant side had me weak in the knees. He was doing things a girl can only dream about. I now need to be flipped upside down and devoured, thanks. And when he started throwing around the words “my wife” I was a goner.
He’s grumpy and rough around the edges, but my God, he’s so soft for her. He’s severely overprotective and not in an annoying way. He respects her, wants her safe, but doesn’t try to control her and he’s got a little sass to him too, which I loved. The way he was flirting? GIDDY. And Riley was dishing it right back she really won me over. I loved her personality, her fire, and apparently she can shoot like a pro. Pop the fuck off, Queen
The storyline was solid too, two mafia families at each other’s throats, lots of tension, enough plot to keep things interesting beyond just the romance and just the right amount of “oh fuck” moments to keep you flipping pages. If you’re looking for a bingeable mafia romance with SPICE( I’m still fanning myself off) angst, and a good time, it’s this one right here.
Honestly I just don’t know how to rate this book! I love a good sister/twin swap arranged-marriage and I was glad we got the whole wedding ceremony drama!
I didn’t like both MC. First, Finn is not over his dead wife!! It’s literally a love triangle for how many times he mentioned her!! We even meet the in-laws, which doesn’t bring anything to the story!! It really felt like his first wife was the love of his life and Riley will only be second best.
Then the sister Harper is also mentioned way too often for my liking. Even during some sexy time he mentioned her!! Arrrgh
Riley was insecure as hell… Honestly she was almost pushing Finn to pick her sister! Get a grip girl! So yes, for those reasons I didn’t feel the chemistry btw those two … they even stopped during s3x because they were fighting… who does that?? They dwell on their feelings over and over again and they were both so immature 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ She was scared shitless to tell him she had a crush on him when they were younger, like it was a State secret!! Who cares!! Luckily there are some nice actions moments. The 🌶️ was sometimes weird but otherwise enjoyable. I have no idea how this mafia operates… they all live together?? And who are the Kings?? Another family at the compound??
I know it’s a first book, but it really needs to be checked more throughly… there were too many mistakes (grammar or who is talking…) it was really confusing.
Todas las escenas eran sosas y la trama no estaba bien construida. Demasiadas cosas, demasiado rápido, pero tampoco pasó nada sorprendente en absoluto.
Ok! So a twist on a mafia romance. Riley has separated and cut family ties (yes never heard of but book actually explains!) but goes to her sister’s wedding that she doesn’t show up for, and to honor family has to step in as she’s an identical twin. Twist!! Ok a good story that does honestly leave a whole other story …. which of course another story is coming. And I’ll be here for it! Loved!
It started off really strong! I love the whole “swapping places with my sister” and walking down the aisle to the man she’s always wanted! That had me hooked and I had really high hopes for the rest of the book.
The chemistry at the ceremony and in the car was 🥵🔥
But if there’s one thing I hate sooooo much, is when the MMC has an ex or dead spouse that they never got over! And this man did NOT get over her! The amount of times he talks or thinks about his dead wife made me want to throw my kindle out the window 🤬 She truly felt like a second choice, and that is not something I enjoy reading. I can understand still being sad and all the guilt, but you can also feel how in love he still is with his ex wife… so I couldn’t really get behind his “falling in love” with the FMC after 2 weeks while he’s still thinking about his ex.
The timeline of it all upset me too, because 2 weeks is not a believable enough time for them to have both fallen so madly in love and for him to just forget and move on from his ex, when he couldn’t do it after 3 years of her having passed away 😒 I would have liked to see them spend more time together and really develop a deeper bond, but all we got was one week of proclaimed tension that we didn’t even get to see + one week of list and sex! The only time we really see them bond is at the diner!
Also, why was what her dad did to her never really addressed?! I’m sorry, but if a man as dangerous as this MMC falls in love with me and doesn’t do a damn thing about what my father did to me, I don’t want him! Isn’t that the point of Dark Romance? To have an MMC who will do anything for you and protect you no matter the cost? He didn’t even say anything to her father! wtf? Yall can have this man, I don’t want him 😠
The FMC was also sometimes insufferable.. she was so insecure! The way she basically hated on her sister for being an extrovert 🙄 Based on the way the sister was described, she never seemed to have ever done anything to her, yet she went on and on about “of course” everyone loves her more because she dressed a certain way and acts a certain way. So? She’s allowed to be bubbly and like pretty/expensive things, as long as she’s not a bitch about it and doesn’t treat anyone badly. I’ve always hated this kind of mentality. I feel like I’m both introverted and extroverted, depending on the day/my mood, and I’ve never hated/judged either group for acting the way they do or liking what they like unless if was rude or harming someone. Just let people live their lives the way they want to!
And lastly… the grammar! There were so many grammatical errors and it drove me nuts! And sometimes the POVs were wrong and you didn’t know who was talking. Definitely needs to go through another round of editing.
I did like the friends though, especially Cian, so I do want to read his book. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
Tropes: Sister swap Arranged marriage Fake marriage Irish Mafia Dark Romance Widowed MMC (obviously still in love)
dnf@63% Sorry but this book is boring. H is weak and still not over his dead wife, h is insecure and I'm tired of reading that she isn't like her twin.
Does anyone actually enjoy the dead spouse trope? Asking for myself bc reading it is such a freaking buzz kill.
Even in fiction, the idea of marrying someone who brings up their dead spouse every chance they get sounds like ✨live laugh toaster bath.✨ Nothing like a love triangle where your competition is a dead person who will forever be idolized in their posthumous glory 🫶🏼
I enjoyed this book and had a good time reading it, but there were some things that stopped me from loving it completely.
The twin-swap story was really interesting. I liked how Riley had to pretend to be her sister at the wedding, and the chemistry between Riley and Finn was great. You could feel the tension between them from the beginning. The mafia setting made everything more exciting, and I enjoyed the forbidden romance aspect.
However, there were some problems that bothered me. Finn talked about his dead wife too much, which made me feel like Riley would always be second place in his heart.
Despite these issues, I still enjoyed the story. The plot moved quickly and kept me interested. The romantic scenes were well done, and I liked seeing how the characters developed feelings for each other.
I would recommend this book to people who enjoy mafia romance and arranged marriage stories, but just know that it's not perfect. It was entertaining enough to keep me reading until the end.
If you don't want to read my ramblings. I'll summarize my thoughts as a story with a dark, gritty setup with a mystery(ish) hook. However we quickly move to the typical less plot more spice world of a lot of mafia stories. Unfortunately we loose the mystery element adding in random BDSM scene that was a bit cringe.
More detail: I had nothing wrong with the two main characters. Riley and Finn were developed decently although I feel Finn was more developed than Riley was. Out of the side characters only Cian had enough for me to picture him in my mind, the rest were rather vanilla.
As for the plot is was okay. This is a more spice than plot type book so just be aware of that. It did disappoint me that some of the threads of this story were left unfinished. Maybe that will be book two but I assumed this was more of a stand-alone with the missing sister linking book 1 to 2. It is that, but with way more loose ends.
It seemed the story about 50% in, lost the plot and went full on erotica with pages of spice scenes. So much so that Riley's confession to Finn about her sister being a spy for their dad made me scratch my head. I was like wtf did we realize that and how could Riley have known this if she literally hates her family and hasn't seen them in 3 years???
Last plot thing was Finn's dad stating "we don't sell our women" to Riley as the reason she was allowed to leave the mob. Umm excuse me but the arranged marriage that this guy approved for his own son which is the hook of this entire story is "selling" in my mind. Sorry I don't buy it. Doesn't make sense with how Riley has portrayed this entire mob family as a bunch of macho alphas who essentially trade and degrade women.
Final thoughts, it was mediocre at best. Less spice more plot (that makes sense), the bdsm scene was super cringe, so much so I skipped most of it. Also please edit the book again for typos.
No, but the way this fictional man had me having butterflies in my stomach 👀😅🤣
This was such a quick and easy read for me! I was hooked by the first chapter!
Basically, Riley our FMC has removed herself From her mafia family, however when she finds out her identical twin sister Harper is about to marry her long term crush (Enforcer Finn) she’s a little gutted. However like a trooper turns up to the wedding to celebrate the marriage. One problem. Harper goes MIA. So their father demands Riley take her place and pretend to be Harper. Which, well, great. But Finn knows instantly that it’s Riley!
I loved this book! There were so many elements and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series ❤️❤️
I am well aware this has the dead spouse trope but it has zero need, I repeat, ZERO need to dedicate a long ass phrases about the dead spouse, about her family, about her work, about her education background, how they met etc… like seriously, what the hell for?
Listen, I have zero problem with the dead spouse trope as I have read so many other books with this trope but many of them failed to deliver the justice in that trope. I don’t care if the mmc fell in love with another woman before and if it’s done right, I love to read how he found another hope and reason to feel and to fall in love again. I’m honestly not quite sure if Finn really did love the dead wife or not by the way. I mean, he told us that he “fell in love” with Brianne (the dead wife) because she’s different (how original) but I didn’t get the vibe that he truly mad in love with her. When she asked for divorce, it was mentioned that he agreed just like that. See? If he’s so in love with her, he wouldn’t agree for the divorce and would fight for their marriage. I mean, from what I read, I think he couldn’t move on from her because he felt guilty she’s dead because of him. She was brutally murdered because of him and that’s why he didn’t want to get close to someone else. He stayed celibate for years because of that. He only agreed to marry Harper because it was arranged by their fathers. And oh, Brianne asked for divorce before she was murdered because she saw him killing someone and I’m confused because she knew who he was and still married him anyway??? So why was she surprised that his job involved torturing and murdering people???? So, so confusing.
I liked the fmc Riley. She’s a likeable character despite the insecurity she felt about herself. I liked the mmc Finn, as well. He’s not my favorite mafia character out there but he’s pretty decent and I enjoyed reading them as a couple. Finn was broken from what happened and Riley was a fresh breath of air in his life.
However there was a scene where they were arguing and Finn was never physically abusive with her so I’m surprised when this line came out of nowhere-
“When he wraps his arms around my shoulders, I stiffen, only to relax as he gathers me in a gentle hug instead of a chokehold.”
Why did she think he was going to have her in a chokehold??? It didn’t even make any sense. This just makes Finn looked abusive because it looked like she was expecting him to assault her. There’s manhandling (because of course it’s essential for mafia men) and him acting like a caveman but that’s about it.
And they always mentioned Harper’s name (the twin) in every damn chapters. My only question is, WHY? Why was there a need to mention this twin’s name so many times in this book when it’s not even her book and she’s not even romantically involved with Finn? Harper had her own book for god sake. I didn’t need to be reminded that he’s engaged to the other twin in every freaking chapters! And don’t even get me started on how selfish this woman was. She ditched her wedding and shoved that problem to her own twin sister and asked her to hold the fort while she took off to think about things???? Oh no she didn’t... this selfish twat… I was planning to read the second book because of Cian (the mmc) but knowing Harper was the fmc in that book ruined the mood for me. She’s so selfish and so thoughtless and didn’t deserve the devotion Riley held for her!
Moving on from the rant. I don’t hate this book. Far from it. It’s not perfect but it’s not that bad either if you could look past the tropes I mentioned above. The writing was decent. I skipped some of the smut but that rough-fucking scene was really hot though 👀 although there’s a line that got me flabbergasted when she said “then Finn uses my clit to send an urgent message in Morse code” LMAOOOOO SAYYY WHATTTT 🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭😭
In the end, I do think that Finn loved Riley. She’s everything that matched his character. While his first wife abandoned him when she saw his true nature, Riley on the other hand embraced it. Some people might complained why Riley had to join the mafia again when she left before just so that she could stay with Finn. Well, she left because of her father. I feel like she would still be in the mafia if it hadn’t been because of her shitty father. And Finn.. when before he agreed to divorce his ex wife but for Riley, he vowed to make her stay and would do anything so she would pick and stay with him and rejoin the family.
🔴 mafia 🔴 non virgins 🔴 age gap 🔴 widowed hero 🔴 celibate hero, heroine 🔴 fake marriage 🔴 twin sister’s fiancee (no double dipping- he has no feeling & doesn’t care for the other twin) 🔴 hero would die for the heroine 🔴 HEA 🔴 no epilogue 😟
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Ok I forgot mafia romance is so fun!! It’s forbidden love and high stakes/high angst like romantasy (but no magic) & all of the family politics & drama that I love !!
If it wasn't for the dead ex who was mentioned 99.9% of the time, this would have easily been a 5 star read for me,hence the 3 stars.I felt that this heroine would always be second best to wife #1.He has her initials tattooed on his body, her wedding ring always in his pocket, keeps the lighter she gave him,has a black jagged line tattooed on his ring finger,so yea, heroine is second best.
Started this a few hours ago and couldn’t put it down until I finished it…. Am I a mafia romance girl now?! 🤣 Full review to come but this was so much fun and perfect after a few more intense fantasies!!!
i didn't feel he was so much in love with his dead wife, just guilt over her death.
he was such a COWARD LOSER would use the fmc emotionally and sexually then be like i don't deserve you, you are going to get hurt because of me LIKE SHUT UPPP, and he did this CONSTANTLY!!!
this also happened in coronation, i don't know what i did do to deserve to read these two back to back.
oh also he was first engaged to her sister but nothing happened between them, fmc kissed mmc 5 (?) years ago, but he rejected her even though he liked the kiss both were celibate but IDCCC loser ass mmc
I don’t know what’s with the mafia trope lately, Its used to be one of my favorite romance trope but I haven’t found a good one in ages.
In this one they had no good relationship build up, no chemistry, and the MMC is stuck on his dead wife. Also there is nothing badass about the MMC, he is not menacing like I expect from my mafia main character.
Also did not like the dialogue, they kept talking in circles and it’s overall just very cringy. And it’s just very boring, I wanted to DNF but I forced myself to finished it because I was too far in already.
This has potential but it was just so underwhelming, I’m annoyed I even picked this up.
DNF 61% this was not giving love this was complete lust went from like no real conversations to going at it for ROUNDS? and i mean back to back chapters like damn give it a break i know that 🐱 hurt… Just not for me very lusty and i feel like they would never last in this marriage
waste of time, unoriginal, anticlimactic, no real emotional connection. only reason i picked this one up was bc nothing else was loading, i should’ve just gone to sleep.
✅ It was an easy read, quick developing plot and I kind of liked the whole family/mafia plot. The smut was good, and the writing as well. It was a great build up for a good saga of books.
❌ However the characters...😬. FC was kind of.. lame? walking mat coded which I don't like if she doesn't have any character development. MC was a dick (which is normal in dark romance) but idk I felt like he was just using her over and over again not once apologising for anything, only "thinking" how dick he was to her but never acknowledging it at the same time. Until the end (literally like in the last two chapters) it felt like he didn't love her while she was in love like a lost puppy following him around feeding off his breadcrumbs 🤷🏼♀️
⭐⭐⭐ This couple wasn't my cup of tea but maybe the next couple in the next book will be.
Me encanto!
4.75🌟! I devoured this book. It was absolutely amazing. Riley and Finn were like fire and kerosene. Dear god, the chemistry between them❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥! I loved Riley’s fire and spirit. And this book was 🔥🔥🔥🔥.
The only thing I disliked about Finn Gallagher was his love for his late wife.
- Marriage of convenience. -Bride swap. -Possessive hero. -Touch her and die. -My wife. -She falls first but he falls harder. -KU, TW, Safe and highly recommended.
