Deconstructed: Kill the Thing That's Killing You

Rate this book
Ben F'n Mollin had it all, but his career as a celebrity hairdresser almost killed him. Feeling trapped and working himself to death as an overweight, functioning alcoholic, he thought about pulling the escape hatch. Instead, he chose to dismantle the cage.

In Kill the Thing That's Killing You, Ben gets brutally honest about burning out, breaking down, and starting over. It's a raw, gritty, and surprisingly funny look at fame, creativity, depression, addiction, suicide, death, and reinvention.

As Ben says, if you want to walk away from it all, run. You'll get there faster.

Unbreakable. Unfiltered. Unforgettable.

Deconstructed is a rare kind of book — the kind that stays with you long after the final page. It’s equal parts grit and grace, told with an honesty that’s both disarming and deeply healing.

What makes this book remarkable isn’t just the wild ride it takes you on, or even the poetry inked between the stories. It’s the unbreakable spirit running through all of it. The way pain is transformed into presence. The way truth shows up with tattoos, sweat, joy, and the kind of light that only comes from having been through darkness.

You won’t meet many people like the author. But when you do — even just through his words — something inside you wakes up. You remember who you are. You feel more alive. You start telling the truth again.

Read Deconstructed if you’re ready for a real one. Read it if you’ve ever broken down and wondered if it could become a breakthrough. Read it if you believe books can change people. This one does.

The author of this book is not shy about sharing his opinions about life. His bombastic style of writing and living is on full display in this memoir, which mostly deals with his substance abuse issues and career as a celebrity hairdresser. The author was overweight and struggling with alcoholism, but he didn’t want to change, until the burnout from the way he was living made it a necessity.

This book pulls no punches, and it’s sometimes not an easy read. It is incredibly compelling, though. Here we have an individual who fought his demons and survived, and that is commendable. His book is funny, at times cringe worthy, and always reminds us of what the human spirit is capable of enduring if we set our minds to some difficult task.

A lot of books get called “raw” or “gritty,” but this one actually deserves those adjectives. Deconstructed by Ben Mollin is the unexpected personal story of a celebrity hairdresser struggling with substance abuse, overweight, and depression despite his apparently glitzy life. Molin describes his life with brutal honesty and believes that he had to hit rock bottom in order to recover. Personally, the writing style is not to my taste, and the humor didn’t land for me, but the experiences the author had were still interesting to read about. Many of us may dream of being a celebrity, but few actually understand the darkness it can have. If you like stories about burnout and starting over told in a blunt, unfiltered way, then this is a good choice for you.

This is an inspirational story that is going to motivate you to trust in yourself. ‘’Deconstructed’’ is an autobiography of the life of Ben F'n Mollin, a famous celebrity hairdresser who, after a life of excess, bravely changed his life and now dedicates himself to helping people with suicide prevention. Here you will find a journey from darkness to liberation, following a man who faces addiction and suicidal thoughts to witness a true transformation. Without a doubt, this reading provides hope, clarity, and even emotional healing. One of the most valuable aspects of this reading is its honesty and vulnerability, creating a connection with the reader. I highly recommend it.

What a rollercoaster of a book! I enjoyed reading the journey of the author's life. And I found several things to relate to that I didn't expect. If you are looking for some inspiration from something raw, human, and honest, this is a great read for that. I don't doubt you will be inspired to take a good look at your own life and not be afraid to make some beautiful, scary, and productive changes.
