Four and a half stars
Sophie Jones has seen her only daughter Tabby off to university on a. Soccer scholarship in the USA. She decides it is time she made a change herself. She leaves London and takes a job in the tiny village of Applemore in the Highlands of Scotland. It doesn’t start well with a run in with Ben, her neighbour and his two dogs. Divorced artist Ben Sinclair is less than thrilled to have his peace and privacy of his old farmhouse overlooking the Highland Beach disturbed by this new neighbour. But it seems circumstances keep throwing them together. Despite their intital encounter an attraction develops. But given her recent disastrous history with a man she trusted, Sophie is not likely to trust any man again. But can Ben change her mind? Does he want to?
I loved being back with the folk in Applemore which I had enjoyed in an earlier book. But it is definitely not necessary to have read that book to enjoy this one. Although there are crossover characters from earlier books, there is the addition of new characters,
This is chick lit with a great setting, and some delightful and relatable characters. I found it easy to empathise with Sophie and Ben and loved the sense of community in Applemore. Yes, perhaps a tad predictable but I became involved with the characters so much, I didn’t really care. I was just enjoying the story. A charming feel good read and just the sort of book to escape into for a while. Definitely recommended. Treat yourself to some time in the charming community of Applemore.

Loved being back in Applemore and catching up with new characters and old friends. Sophie is a vet and relocates to the Highlands and moves into a picture perfect cottage, she is settling in well and wants to move on with her life. Ben is an artist and Sophie’s new neighbour, he appears grumpy! They get off on the wrong foot but Applemore and it’s wonderful community work it’s calming magic on them. I loved the beautiful setting of the cottage and wish it was a real place! Delighted to see Ayr mentioned as that is where I live! An absolute treat that I read in a day as I was so engrossed in Sophie and Ben’s story. So special to have an early copy.

I've been a fan of Rachael Lucas' books since I first discovered her a few years ago. But this latest book, set once more in Applemore in the Scottish Highlands, has to be my favorite! I should warn that while some characters from previous books do appear in this one, it really is a standalone, and doesn't require any knowledge of the other books.
This book features a 40-something hero and heroine, each with a daughter at university. Sophie is a vet in England. She's worked in the same small practice since she left university, and is very much taken for granted (or even mocked) by everyone else in the practice. Sophie's trying to deal with empty-nest syndrome, as her daughter has left and gone to university in Atlanta. When Sophie's passed over for a promotion, she's had enough, and almost on a whim applies for a position in a small vet clinic in Scotland.
Sophie meets Ben -- an artist -- almost immediately upon arrival in Applemore; he lives in the cottage next two her. The two get off to a rocky start, but gradually become friends.
I liked both Sophie and Ben. They have a lot of the same problems, are both nice, intelligent people. The romance is very low key, but that was fine with me. I would love to see more books set in Applemore, perhaps one featuring Sophie's daughter (should she decide to move to Scotland).

A lovely read!
My first Rachel Lewis book. I’ll look for a few more.
Loved Sophie and her bold move. I appreciated that the back story wasn’t the major thing to take precedence over the here and now in her new adventure. Just a few lines towards the end of the book to give clarity and then closure. Well done.
I love the setting.
Today is a cold coastal day by the ocean with the waves crashing into the shore, so I could relate to Sophie’s freezing coastal haunts.
Ben was a lovely character. No fuss. No drama. The community characters were all written in fabulously.
The ending was lovely.

This was a nice little read far too slow for my liking.
I really like all the characters I just feel that it was boring until maybe the last 4 chapters when they really started thinking of getting together. I feel robbed of cute Ben and Sophie moments though, I wish we got to see them together more than just the last chapter and the epilogue

Wat een feel good boek!
Het boek is nummer 5 in een serie van boeken die allemaal als standalone gelezen kunnen worden.
Het verhaal gaat over Sophie die nadat haar dochter (Tabby) het nest heeft verlaten, op zoek gaat naar haar eigen gelukt. En beland in het dorpje Applemore in the schotse highlands.
Hier woont ze in een prachtig kust huisje en werkt ze als dierenarts. Ze maakt vriendinnen, doet haar best in de community en wordt langzaam steeds gelukkiger.
Het boek leest soepel weg. Het is op een fijne manier geschreven zonder te veel poespas.
Ik wil eigenlijk de rest van de serie ook lezen!

Endearing read
I liked this story about a woman whose daughter has flown the nest, and she decides to throw caution to the wind. Sophie is a vet and she decides to move to a new practice in the Highlands. I liked the characters who were all friendly and welcoming towards her.

Contemporary romance is my new guilty pleasure 😂 this was an ok story, I wished it followed on with the rest of the series and the Fraser family. It almost feels like it should be a spin off series and the Frasers don't really feature at all.

De karakters waren stuk voor stuk lieflijk.
En het verhaal zelf was vooral simpel, rustig en vredig.

Another brilliant story from Rachael Lucas. Sophie is one of those characters you just know would be your best friend. Warm hearted and so natural I loved her from the very beginning and willed her to find her way in the beautiful village and community of Appledore.
Being back in the Highlands has been a wonderful tonic for the soul. Rachael writes about this community with such heart and I’ve loved reconnecting with old friends.

Very sweet, very readable with a happy ending, and a good depiction of vets.
1 star removed for the mention of expensive vet fees but only other veterinary staff will agree with me about that.
Also a realistic peek into the life of a parent with an older child no longer living in the family home.

Dit is alweer het vijfde deel in de Applemore Bay-serie, maar voor mij was dit de eerste kennismaking. En eerlijk: dat beviel beter dan verwacht. Het is zo’n boek waar je heel makkelijk in rolt. Even beginnen en voor je het weet ben je alweer een flink stuk verder.
In dit verhaal volgen we Sophie, een dierenarts die ineens alleen achterblijft nu haar dochter gaat studeren. Dat lege nest hakt er meer in dan ze had gedacht. Ook op haar werk voelt ze zich niet meer op haar plek, waardoor ze besluit een grote stap te zetten. Ze reageert op een baan in de Schotse Hooglanden en vertrekt naar Applemore voor een frisse start. Daar ontmoet ze Ben, een wat teruggetrokken kunstenaar met zijn eigen verhaal. Hun eerste ontmoeting? Niet bepaald een succes. Maar zoals dat gaat in dit soort verhalen… ze blijven elkaar tegenkomen.
Wat dit boek echt fijn maakt, is de sfeer. Dat cosy small town-gevoel zit er helemaal in: een dorp waar iedereen elkaar kent, prachtige natuur en een rustige, warme setting. Je merkt dat Sophie daar langzaam weer tot zichzelf komt, en dat is mooi om te volgen. Ook de groei tussen haar en Ben voelt natuurlijk. Van ongemakkelijke ontmoetingen naar iets wat steeds meer gaat betekenen. Zoals een lekkere feelgood hoort te gaan;-)
Dat dit het vijfde deel is, vond ik trouwens geen probleem. Er komen vast wel personages uit eerdere boeken voorbij, maar ik had nergens het idee dat ik iets miste. Het verhaal staat prima op zichzelf.
Toch miste ik soms net wat diepgang. Alles leest heel lekker weg, maar blijft ook een beetje veilig. Ik had af en toe graag wat meer emotie of verrassing gezien, vooral omdat Sophie best een interessant verleden heeft.
Al met al is Het kusthuisje in Applemore een heerlijk, ontspannen verhaal dat perfect is voor een rustige leesmiddag. Niet heel vernieuwend, maar wel gewoon fijn om even in weg te dromen.

Daar ontmoet ze Ben, een wat teruggetrokken kunstenaar met zijn eigen verhaal. Hun eerste ontmoeting? Niet bepaald een succes. Maar zoals dat gaat in dit soort verhalen… ze blijven elkaar tegenkomen.
Wat dit boek echt fijn maakt, is de sfeer. Dat cosy small town-gevoel zit er helemaal in: een dorp waar iedereen elkaar kent, prachtige natuur en een rustige, warme setting. Je merkt dat Sophie daar langzaam weer tot zichzelf komt, en dat is mooi om te volgen. Ook de groei tussen haar en Ben voelt natuurlijk. Van ongemakkelijke ontmoetingen naar iets wat steeds meer gaat betekenen. Zoals een lekkere feelgood hoort te gaan;-)
Dat dit het vijfde deel is, vond ik trouwens geen probleem. Er komen vast wel personages uit eerdere boeken voorbij, maar ik had nergens het idee dat ik iets miste. Het verhaal staat prima op zichzelf.
Toch miste ik soms net wat diepgang. Alles leest heel lekker weg, maar blijft ook een beetje veilig. Ik had af en toe graag wat meer emotie of verrassing gezien, vooral omdat Sophie best een interessant verleden heeft.
Al met al is Het kusthuisje in Applemore een heerlijk, ontspannen verhaal dat perfect is voor een rustige leesmiddag. Niet heel vernieuwend, maar wel gewoon fijn om even in weg te dromen.

Het kusthuisje in Applemore is deel 5 in de Applemore Bay serie. Voor mij is het wel het eerste deel wat ik lees, maar zeker niet de laatste. Ik had eerder van deze auteur gehoord en was erg nieuwsgierig. Hierdoor lag mijn verwachting wat hoog. Het verhaal is prima los te lezen van de andere delen. Het is een leuk feelgood verhaal. Ik vond het weer eens iets anders dat een dierenarts met dierenartsenpraktijk in het verhaal centraal stonden. De sfeer maakt het verhaal goed. Een small town romance, iedereen kent elkaar en staat voor elkaar klaar. Rachael Lucas heeft een vlotte schrijfstijl waardoor ik het verhaal fijn lezen vond. Ik vloog door het verhaal heen en zag het echt allemaal voor mij wat ze beschreef. De personages zijn goed neergezet. Hebben ze echt diepgang? Niet echt, maar is dit nodig? Van mij hoeft dat niet per se in een feelgood verhaal. Dit is zo'n verhaal waarbij je de personages in je hart sluit, je gaat van ze houden. Wil je genieten van een heerlijk feelgood verhaal? Vol goede moed gaat ze naar Applemore. Ze wordt leuk en fijn ontvangen op haar nieuwe werkplek en ze ontmoet de teruggetrokken kunstenaar Ben. Rachael Lucas is de auteur van de Applemore serie, deze serie gaat over het Schotse dorpje en haar bewoners. Het begon met het Winterhuisje en gaat zo de seizoenen langs.
Het kusthuisje in Applemore begint echter niet in het dorpje zelf maar in een ander dorpje waar Sophie’s dochter naar de andere kant van de wereld afreist voor de kans van haar leven. Sophie bekijkt haar omgeving en werk opnieuw en besluit heel drastisch dat het tijd wordt voor verandering. Ze komt in Applemore terecht waar ze opgenomen wordt in het dorpsleven. En ze leert daar Ben kennen……zal ze ook op liefdesgebied de kans van haar leven krijgen?
De kern van het verhaal gaat eigenlijk over het bekende Lege nest syndroom, het verdriet van een moeder verstopt achter de blijdschap van haar dochter.
Het boek gaat over hoe Sophie haar leven opnieuw een invulling geeft, hoe collega’s misbruik maken van haar vrijheid en haar eenzaamheid en waar waardering ontbreekt.
Er zijn kleine tijdsprongen in het verhaal en dat zorgt voor een korte terugblik, maar dan gaat het met volle kracht vooruit.
Het leest gewoon prettig als situaties die het verloop van het verhaal bepalen toch kort samengevat worden om daarna weer verder te gaan in Applemore, want dat dorp is waar deze serie om draait.
De lezer die de achterflap heeft gelezen wil graag weten wat er gaat gebeuren op romantisch gebied, wie is Ben en hoe is hij? En wat is die ontmoeting?
Dit vijfde deel is een prima los te lezen deel voor de mensen die Applemore nog niet hebben leren kennen, wel staan alle andere boeken nu op mijn verlanglijst. Verwacht is dat mensen die de serie wel binge-lezen wel veel zullen herkennen en het ook fijn vinden dat ze weten hoe het verder gaat met andere personages uit eerdere delen. De focus ligt op Sohie en Ben en daar wordt enorm van genoten.

Wanneer ze een advertentie ziet voor een dierenarts in het pittoreske Schotse dorpje Applemore, besluit ze ervoor te gaan. Vanaf het moment dat Sophie in Applemore aankomt, voelt het aan als thuiskomen. Maar haar eerste ontmoeting met Ben, een gescheiden teruggetrokken kunstenaar verloopt minder soepel. Is hij altijd zo nors, of alleen tegen haar? Als ze elkaar steeds vaker tegenkomen, blijkt dat de eerste indruk niet altijd de juiste is.….

De geweldige sfeer die er in Applemore heerst is zo mooi beeldend en gedetailleerd beschreven dat het lijkt alsof je er zelf bent. De mooie Schotse Hooglanden, de zee en natuurlijk het kusthuisje.
We volgen het verhaal van Sophie, die helemaal tot zichzelf komt als ze in Applemore aankomt. De eerste ontmoeting met Ben mag dan rampzalig zijn, maar het is er zeker één om te onthouden. Naar mate ze elkaar vaker zien en elkaar beter leren kennen, zie je ze samen groeien. De mooie groei die ze samen doormaken zorgt voor een voelbare spanning tussen beiden.
Het kusthuisje in Applemore is een romantisch verhaal over tweede kansen, voor jezelf opkomen en opnieuw beginnen. En dat allemaal in de mooie Schotse Hooglanden.

This is the fifth book in the Applemore Bay series, but for me, it was my first introduction to these books—and honestly, it was a pleasant surprise. The story reads very easily; it’s one of those books you slip into effortlessly and only put down once you’ve finished it.
Although characters from previous books make an appearance, I never felt like I was missing anything. The story stands strong on its own, which makes it very accessible for new readers like me. That’s always a big plus when it comes to a series.
This book mainly revolves around Sophie, a veterinarian who finds herself at a turning point in her life. Now that her daughter has moved out, more has changed than she expected. At work, she doesn’t feel appreciated, and after certain events, she decides it’s time for a fresh start. She applies for a job in the Highlands—a choice that is both exciting and something that makes her daughter proud.
Once she arrives, her new beginning doesn’t go entirely smoothly. The apartment she was supposed to move into has a leak, so she temporarily ends up staying in a holiday cottage. And that’s where things get interesting… she has a grumpy neighbor named Ben. Or is he perhaps not as grumpy as he first seems?
The story strikes a nice balance between personal growth, new opportunities, and a touch of romance.

In het voorlaatste deel van de Applemore Bay-serie komt voor het eerst een persoon buiten de Fraser-familie voorbij. In het kusthuisje in Applemore van Rachael Lucas maken we kennis met Sophie, die na het vertrek van haar studerende dochter verhuisd naar de Schotse Hooglanden. Hoewel haar eerste ontmoeting met buurman en kunstenaar Ben niet de beste is, groeit er tussen hen een sterke aantrekkingskracht.
Ook in dit deel zit je weer zonder problemen snel in het verhaal en zeker omdat Sophie een nieuw personage is, kun je het goed als standalone lezen. Toch miste ik de familie Fraser wel, die in de vorige boeken vaker langskwamen. Na vier boeken heb je toch een band opgebouwd met de familie.
Ondanks dat was het weer een heerlijk feelgood boek, dat makkelijk wegleest en je graag verder wilt lezen omdat je helemaal in het verhaal zit. Wat dit boek zeker leuk maakt is dat een aantal dorpsbewoners die eerder maar kort voorbij kwamen, nu meer tot hun recht kwamen waardoor je ook een andere kant van ze leerde kennen. Kortom: alle ingrediënten voor een cosy small town.

We mogen mee naar Schotland in dit boek, wat voor mij altijd al een beetje als thuiskomen voelt door outlander🤭. We volgen Sophie, een moeder en dierenarts die voor haar eigen gevoel makkelijk over zichzelf heen laat lopen. Maar hoelang laat ze dit nog gebeuren?
Ze kiest namelijk voor een nieuwe baan als dierenarts midden in de High lands, in de hoop dat ze haar dochter die uit huis is minder gaat missen en wat meer gewaardeerd gaat worden in haar werk.
Het is een cozy verhaal waar je je echt even thuis in mag voelen, als vijfde boek in de serie is het dan ook echt een serie waar je van kan genieten en in kan weg dromen. Het dorp is knus, gezellig en midden in de natuur, wat wilt een mens nog meer?
De band die Sophie samen met de mensen uit het dorp, en in het bijzonder natuurlijk Ben opbouwt is leuk en mooi om mee te maken. Die twee zijn echt voor elkaar gemaakt, en dat merk je helemaal vanaf de tweede helft van het boek.
De schrijfstijl is toegankelijk en zorgt ervoor dat je op elke bladzijde meegenomen wordt in het verhaal, wat erg fijn is.
Al met al dus echt een heerlijk knus verhaal om in te verdwalen.

💭 Dit voorlaatste deel van de Applemore Bay-reeks is voor mij opnieuw een bevestiging waarom dit dé reeks is voor liefhebbers van cosy small town verhalen. Ik hou enorm van dat warme dorpsgevoel waarin iedereen elkaar kent en waarbij de verhaallijnen subtiel doorlopen over de verschillende boeken heen. Omdat ik de eerste drie delen al heb gelezen herkende ik dus heel wat elementen en personages, wat een leuke meerwaarde is. Toch vond ik dit boek net iets minder sterk dan de vorige (spoiler: ik heb mijn hart verloren aan boek één en boek drie). Het tempo lag vrij laag en het plot is vrij voorspelbaar en hoewel dat ergens wel past binnen het genre, miste ik soms wat extra spanning of gebeurtenissen die ervoor zorgen dat je het boek niet kunt wegleggen. Desondanks blijft het een gezellig en aangenaam verhaal om tussendoor op te pakken wanneer je zin hebt in iets lichts en sfeervols.

When Sophie rents the Cottage which lies below his cottage, in an isolated part of Applemore, Ben isn't pleased, preferring the solitude he craves. Can they move past their differences?

I was in a mood where I just wanted some light reading, and this cozy romance set in Scotland felt about right. There is nothing objectionable about this novel. The main character is sympathetic and the situations felt true enough. The dialogue was realistic with some charming repartee. I didn't roll my eyes like I often do with romances. The descriptions of the setting were evocative. There was just little conflict or mystery driving the plot. We find out fairly early on what happened in the MC's past that made her skittish about relationships with the opposite sex. There wasn't a lot in the way of the romance. While I appreciated that there wasn't some jacked up misunderstanding (which I always find a weak plot device) or anyone acting high-handed, there was hardly any impediment to the romance. I did like that the protagonist was older - forties - which is not really old in my book, but not an ingenue, anyway, with a daughter in college. It was all very pleasant, but there just wasn't much to keep my attention and propel me through the book.

The Cottage by the Shore was an enjoyable story to read. It was fun, thoughtful, upbeat, happy, and filled with all sorts of characters in a beautiful setting in the Scottish Highlands. I was very happy to be reading a story that was clean and wholesome, without any sexual encounters...that is, until close to the end of the book. Unfortunately, sex had to come into the picture in what otherwise was a very nice story of two lonely people, finding themselves as newbies in a Highlands community, and slowly discovering that what began as a not-so-good first meeting, gradually became more over time.
