I reviewed an advance reader copy, and these thoughts are my own.

Lie by Lie is a richly layered mystery that delivers exactly what fans of investigative genealogy crave. Karen Copperfield returns in a story that blends two intertwined mysteries spanning three generations, and every thread is handled with precision. I kept trying to guess how the characters connected, and each reveal landed perfectly.

Ms. George’s use of family tree graphics is a smart touch, especially with such a complex case. They make the twists easier to follow and add depth to the narrative.

This book is clever, immersive, and full of smart surprises. If you enjoy genealogical sleuthing or multi-generational mysteries, this one is absolutely worth your time. I’m already looking forward to Karen’s next investigation.

"Lie by Lie”, written by Sue George, picks up with another intriguing case featuring the return of Karen Copperfield, a genealogist. This time, she isn’t only exposing other people’s secrets — some of her own start to surface, giving the story even more depth. Everything begins with Adam and Heather, two adoptees who were raised to believe they weren’t related. But when inconsistencies make them question what they’ve been told, they seek out Karen to uncover the truth.

The story is engaging, but with multiple characters and shifting timelines, it can be tricky to follow at times. Keeping the family trees close by and writing notes would have really helped me stay on track.

As the pieces start coming together near the end, everything clicks, and the book becomes hard to put down. If you enjoyed DNA Never Lies, you’ll want to read this one too. Even on its own, the suspenseful storytelling and Karen’s investigative style make it compelling. I highly recommend Lie by Lie to anyone who enjoys family secrets, DNA mysteries, and character-driven thrillers.

I received a free advance copy in return for an honest review.

Karen is asked to find out more about the ancestry of two adoptees, Heather and Adam, who discovered they were full siblings through DNA tests.

This the second book by this author in the Karen Copperfield genealogy mystery series. I had read the first 3 years ago, and my thoughts then were that there were a lot of names to remember. It was the same this time, but even more so. Half way through I decided to take notes so I could remember who everyone was and this helped me to follow as the story skipped between the various generations.

There is some in depth telling of the 1953 floods on Canvey Island which I wasn't aware of, so that was interesting, but overall there weren't many likeable characters in the book, and a lot of falling out within families, so hard to feel empathy for their problems.

I really enjoyed this book. I'm a keen family historian and this novel really gave a good understanding of real life decisions having such an impact decades and generations later. It's the stories that accompany the facts that make genealogy so addictive and this was a great story.
