I really enjoyed this book. The style was different then I was used to, almost like a classic. Except I could understand it. Cassandra is what I would hope to be if I lived in a land where two dragon kings were fighting for the crown. I liked this book and hope for a sequel.

Oaths of Land and Sea is an absolutely mesmerizing fantasy novel that had me hooked from the very first chapter. Evelyn A. Bernard has crafted a world so rich and immersive that I felt like I was walking the winding paths of Eberanth and soaring through the skies alongside Cassandrea.
Cassandrea is a phenomenal protagonist—fierce, intelligent, and deeply layered. Her journey is one of survival, loyalty, and self-discovery, and I loved every second of following her through the treacherous political landscapes and the breathtaking magical realms Bernard has built. The novel is packed with action, heart-pounding tension, and beautifully written prose that brings the story to life.

Oaths of Land and Sea drew me in just like a sirens song! This book got me out of a reading slump and had me falling back in love with reading. Oaths of Land and Sea has everything one would want in a book: magical creatures and a great plot. Kerr is absolutely book boyfriend material if you can truly trust him and while he may be playful and flirty he uses this to hide emotions he doesn’t want to come out. He is trained a Kelpie Lord on a mission and he is introduced to a beautiful, sassy siren named Cassandrea. Cassandrea the siren spy is smart, sassy and powerful woman. Her past actions don’t define her future.
There is some serious foreshadowing throughout the book.
If you like epic fantasy, spies, dragon kings, war, emotional journey and loyalty this is the book for you.
The author does a fantastic job making the characters come alive, her descriptive writing is magical. The book is plot driven and done so beautifully, sprinkle in some romance and twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat. Looking forward to the next book in this series!

This book drew me in the second I started reading. The first few chapters went by really quickly with new characters and a lot of changes to the FMC's, Cassandrea, life. First she's attacked by her husband and then she ends up back in her kingdom where her king, who also happens to be a dragon, tasks her with going to help settle an uprising in one of their settlements.
On this trip she is to work with someone else to secure the city before the forces can raze it properly: Kerr. Kerr is a Kelpie Lord and the banter between him and Cass made me keep reading. Kerr is flirty and definitely knows the effect he has on those around him. Safe to say: I fell in love with him instantly. The relationship that develops between him and Cass is definitely interesting. I love their banter and how well they seem to get along with one another. There is definitely a twist that I will leave for you to find on your own, but it changes the trajectory of everything so much.
I love every single character I have been introduced to in some way shape or form, even if they don't seem to have the best intentions. They are all well formed and definitely have distinctive personalities that make them stand out. Overall, the characters are what really make me want to keep reading. It was nearly impossible to not devour the last ten or so chapters. The story definitely ends leaving you wanting more and I will definitely be reading the next book in the series as soon as I possibly can.

So much intrigue- everyone has secrets, a kingdom at war, the heir to the throne has split off and caused rebellion … why would he do that? We are introduced to many magical creatures in this world. From Kelpie to Kappa to Will o wisp to Sirens, dragons, and fae (oh my). Our FMC is a spy and a siren, utterly devoted to her king, who uses her skills to get information, she meets Kerr a kelpie and they have a job to do behind enemy lines. She will learn not all she thinks she knows is true, but will her blind loyalty to the king shake? We need book 2 to see…

My heart still hurts a little!! This book was so good! It was action packed, and hit all those emotions. This was a 5⭐️ read for me.
I haven’t been reading a lot of books lately with sea/water creatures and monsters, so this was a special treat for me! There was a siren, kelpies and kappas. But, there were also some of my favorites… dragons and fae.
This book was action packed from start to finish. The characters were well developed and I loved the world, from those creepy marshes, to the beautiful city in the mountain. The FMC Cassandrea was tough, but she also longed to belong and to have people to see the woman she was past her siren abilities.
This book hit all the emotions, it was intense, exciting, there was that delicious tension and heartbreak. I went from loving a character to 🔪🔪🔪. When you read it, you’ll know! 🤣
I am so glad that book 2 is already out because I need to know what happens!!

So I think I have a new book boyfriend! I loved Kerr. I wouldn’t have minded the story all from his POV to be honest. Overall, a solid start to a fantasy trilogy. For me, third person in this genre now feels a bit jarring, but it was well told, with great world building, action and a twist of romance. Nice to see some new mythical creatures - a siren and a kelpie as MCs is a first for me - and I’m looking forward to book two.

UMM… WHAT?! 😳 That opening line had me hooked straight away!
We follow Cassandrea, a half-blood siren who works as a spy and saboteur for her Dragon King, Valderan. When she wakes up to find her own husband trying to kill her with a poisoned rope, she manages to escape and return to her king. But she's not getting much time to catch her breath before she's sent on another dangerous mission, this time with Kerr, a handsome but dangerous kelpie. 👀
I absolutely loved Cassandrea! She's fierce, smart and doesn't back down easily. I really enjoyed following her journey and seeing how loyalty, betrayal and survival all come into play throughout the story.
This book was action-packed, and there was always something happening to keep me interested. I also loved the characters and how well-developed they were. The whole fantasy world, with sirens, Dragon Kings and kelpies, made this such a fun read!
Honestly, this was a 5-star read for me! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you haven't yet read this, run and do it now! If you love an adventure creature fantasy like the Witcher, but romance and a cheeky MC like ACOTAR this is 100% the book for you. I was obsessed from the beginning and was always thinking about when I could read next to see what would happen!

We follow Cassandrea, a siren who, on the king’s orders, joins forces with Kerr, a kelpie, to help the king take over a city.
Cassandrea is clever, sassy, and has so many layers that make her easy to love. She’s brave and fiercely loyal to her king, and I really enjoyed getting to know her.
Then there’s Kerr! He’s flirtatious, playful, and effortlessly charming, especially when it comes to Cassandrea. A classic MMC who knows how to make an impression!
The world-building is rich and detailed, and even though this is high fantasy, it’s so easy to get swept up in the story that the pages just fly by. By the time I reached the final part of the book, I could tell that something much bigger was waiting to unfold, and now I can barely wait for the next instalment!
An epic fantasy with immersive world-building, intriguing characters, and a story that’s easy to get lost in. Absolutely a five-star read!

So, I read this book, and I liked it for the most part.
It is a book that I would recommend, so let's get into the details.
The writing style is different from what I'm used to, but I like it. A lot. It works for both the tone of the book as well as the story. The grammar and syntax are coherent and eloquent. The story is a bit abrupt at the beginning due to the time skips, however, once we get past those two points, the flow continues, leading to engaging storytelling.
I do wish there was bit more of an emphasis on the world-building. I can’t exactly imagine the world as well as I would like to. The descriptions of the characters and their surroundings at times are well-written.
The story is fast-paced, which works for the war that is currently occurring, but it also makes the relationship between Kerr and Cassandrea feel rushed and lack depth. I personally didn't care too much for Kerr. His character was also a bit predictable if you know what I mean.
Cassandrea is a character whose POV I enjoyed. She is strong. Cass continues to move forward even when she's been hurt, betrayed, and and feeling lost. On the other hand, I somewhat dislike her naivety. She is supposedly over two hundred years old, but it often feels as if she is younger.
She trusts Kerr and falls for him way too fast and easily, but it does make sense considering her past. She is looking for something to anchor herself to, something that she can relate to (which is Kerr). She has this trauma from being hated and fear simply for being a siren. People are disgusted by her, and she hates that. She wants someone to look at her, the person she is, rather than background.
I find it a bit odd that Cassandrea never really questions her king, the world around her, and the horrid things that occur. She just accepts them because that is what they are, but I do like how the authors focus on the consequences of ignorance.
I like how all the characters are written. The side-characters all have depth to them, especially Torquil (the general), both dragon kings, Ronan, etc. Even Kerr, who at first, was your basic romantasy male lead with a simple charisma, gained a bit of dimension by the end of the book.
I like how the book explores the effects of war and the trauma that it creates, leaving behind almost soulless husks of beings, with some only continuing forward if just to avenge others or themselves.
Cassandrea has gone through so much, and you can't help but feel for her. She is broken, but she doesn't let that stop her. Instead, she stays on her path, if only to reassure herself that there is still a reason to live (for her, it is her allegiance to the king).
Overall, Oaths of Land and Sea is a book that I would recommend because it well-written and sucks the reader in. I didn't realize how fast the time went by when I was reading this book, so go and check it out!

This quote is so meaningful. You can’t help but feel bad for the main character. “Weak. She felt so weak. And she hated it. She hated everything. For a few long breaths, she just lay there, weeping. She gave up. She had given up in the waters. And still the gods wanted to punish her further and spat her out. For what? Just to spite her?”
“For believing, even for one moment, that there was light and colour in this world. Pure fury and disgust filled her heart as she was dragging the fallen general on. But it was that darkness and fury that kept her going and gave her the strength to push on. For as long as her body would last.”
This quote is so real: “You cannot help people who do not wish to be helped, Kerr,” the dragon said gently, his gaze understanding and soothing and his voice sad in a way that made Kerr’s heart ache. “Not yet.”

Chapter 14: Major twist, OMG 😱 I didn't see that coming! I had to re-read a page in Chapter 14 twice because I couldn't believe what I was reading. It’s not often I’m completely bowled over by a plot twist! 👏🏼

FINAL THOUGHTS
• The Good: Incredible worldbuilding, vivid character descriptions, and a very detailed glossary at the back. The plot builds a clear picture in your mind, and that plot twist was totally unexpected! 🫨👏🏼
• The Bad: That plot twist 💔... KIDDING! Honestly, I couldn't think of anything!
• Verdict: I found myself thinking about this book and its characters even when I wasn't reading. It's rare for a story to play in the background of my mind like that, but this one did. If you like sirens kelpies, mystical creatures, prophecy and lore, a duty-versus-desire romance, assassin/spy protagonists, and high-stakes royal politics involving dangerous mythical beasts, I highly recommend this! I already have Book 2 on my TBR and cannot wait to read it!

• The Good: Incredible worldbuilding, vivid character descriptions, and a very detailed glossary at the back. The plot builds a clear picture in your mind, and that plot twist was totally unexpected! 🫨👏🏼
• The Bad: That plot twist 💔... KIDDING! Honestly, I couldn't think of anything!
• Verdict: I found myself thinking about this book and its characters even when I wasn't reading. It's rare for a story to play in the background of my mind like that, but this one did. If you like sirens kelpies, mystical creatures, prophecy and lore, a duty-versus-desire romance, assassin/spy protagonists, and high-stakes royal politics involving dangerous mythical beasts, I highly recommend this! I already have Book 2 on my TBR and cannot wait to read it!

I loved this book! Cassandrea is an interesting and compelling main character, and I enjoyed watching her grapple with her half-siren nature, even as she also has to navigate the mistrust and disdain of the military leaders with whom she works. Her flirtatious banter with Kerr is a lot of fun, as are the hints of softness she shows and the peeks into her past we receive. Kerr is also a very fun character, with his smug smirk and his playful banter. The setting is interesting, and we get to see a wide variety of non-human and half-human creatures, who have interesting interplay between each other and with the humans. I also really appreciate how the author is willing to confront the brutal realities of war, and the toll it can take on both soldiers and civilians, as well as the ways a civil war can be uniquely troubling for the civilian population. For all that it’s a fantasy story, some parts are heartbreakingly real. And then there’s an explosive twist in the second half that took my breath away! I'm very excited to read the next one in the series.

Cassandrea is a siren sent to undermine a city under siege, all while a civil war rages between two dragon kings. She is devastatingly loyal, fiercely competent, and heartbreakingly pure-hearted, which makes her journey both compelling and painful to watch.

The pacing is fast, the twists are GUTTING, and the final reveal at the end demolishes everything you thought you understood.
This book is layered and intense. It’s about loyalty, betrayal, identity, and what happens when devotion is weaponized. You’ll GLARE at the last sentence and immediately want to reach for book two.

What a FANTASTIC start to a series!! Oaths of Land and Sea pulled me into its world almost immediately, and by the end, I was left with SO MANY QUESTIONS and desperate to dive straight into books two and three!
Cassandrea…CASS!! I absolutely loved her. She is such an incredibly complex character with so much depth. Her unwavering loyalty to her king, everything she has sacrificed in his name, and the things she has convinced herself were necessary for peace make her fascinating to follow. But watching those convictions slowly begin to crack? YES. 👏🏻 One doubt becomes another, and suddenly everything she thought she knew isn’t quite as certain anymore.
And then there’s the kelpie spy she’s forced to work with… The slow-burn yearning between these two was SO GOOD. The tension, the questions he keeps asking that Cass would much rather avoid, and the way he gradually gets under her skin had me completely invested. Give me ALL the slow burn!
There were lies, unexpected betrayals, secrets, political intrigue, and a cliffhanger that left me staring at the page wondering HOW I was supposed to stop there. I need to know what happens next! How is her king going to respond to the situation they currently find themselves in?! And I have so many questions about Cass’s background that I desperately need answered.
I also LOVED the sheer variety of mythological creatures woven throughout this world. This is so much more than the typical fantasy filled with fae. We get sirens, kelpies, kappas, dragons, and SO many more creatures! It made the world feel huge, imaginative, and full of possibilities. The world-building was fantastic without taking away from the characters and their story.
Beautifully written, wonderfully layered, and an incredible introduction to this world and its characters. That ending has me VERY ready to find out what comes next.

A scarred siren spy, a tyrant king, and a kelpie who steals every scene...
"Life was good" is followed almost immediately by a rope around Cassandrea's neck, and the book never lets go. Cassandrea is a siren spy who loves the wrong people and serves a dragon king with a smile. I believed in her wound and her loyalty. The scene where she walks away from her husband instead of finishing the job is one of my favorites.
If you like A Court of Thorns and Roses, you'll love the fae courts, the banter, and the sense that every beautiful creature is dangerous. If you enjoyed Throne of Glass, you'll recognize a scarred assassin whose loyalty to a charming tyrant is starting to crack. Readers of Daughter of the Pirate King will enjoy the siren lore, the sea magic, and the flirty partnership. And the opening chapter has the same thrill as Mr. & Mrs. Smith, with a spy marriage turning lethal in a heartbeat.
Valderan is the villain I couldn't look away from. His grooming of Cassandrea ("Fear is the key to their souls") gave me chills. Kerr, the kelpie, makes a perfect foil with his wit and secrets. The swim through the flooded sewer had me holding my breath. The ship battle with the red drake is vivid and thrilling. The sensory detail is a real strength: blood and resin on the wind, the cold of the sea, a bell tolling in fog, the warmth of a stranger beside you. By the end I was emotionally invested in a way I didn't expect.
Highly recommended for fans of fantasy romance with real stakes, a spy plot, and morally gray heroes. (18+ only.)

The story introduces unique creatures, emotionally layered characters, and a world caught in war, all wrapped around a deep, lingering mystery that keeps you turning the pages.
Cassandrea, the main character, has real depth. She’s cruel and ruthless on the surface, yet hides a softer side she reveals only to a select few. Strong, badass, and unapologetic, she’s the kind of FMC you can’t help but love. And Kerr… don’t even get me started. If you’re not swooning over him, I genuinely don’t know what to tell you. He’s the perfect morally grey MMC: hot, cruel, dangerous—and just soft enough to completely wreck your heart. Yes, hearts will be broken.
Looking for Fae? You’ll find them here, in many different forms. It’s unusual, sometimes surprising, and yet it makes perfect sense. Why should there be only one kind of Fae? The author absolutely nailed it by creating multiple types within the same world.

From the very beginning, Oaths of Land and Sea leans heavily into plot, with turns I did not always see coming and a story that never really slows down. It is told mostly from Cassandrea’s POV, and I appreciated how much time we spend inside her head. The focus on her internal thoughts and emotions felt unique compared to other fantasy romances and gave the story a more introspective tone.
The romance is present but understated, with minimal, fade to black intimacy. This makes it a great choice for readers who prefer less spice and more story, including a younger audience.
I did find myself wanting more depth in the worldbuilding and supporting cast. Even near the end, new characters are introduced, which left me curious but occasionally slightly disoriented. There was also a brief adjustment period with the way Cassandrea is referred to interchangeably as “she” and “the siren,” but once I understood the pattern, it stopped pulling me out of the story.

The twist opening?! Marvellous.
We are introduced to Cassandrea in what we believe as a devastating way, only to have our opinion flipped on its head early on. Cassandrea begins to make a journey in which we are given background information on her. What she is. Her purpose.
There are a few time jumps in this story and I did feel like I lost some characterisation within this period but not too much that it hugely affected the story.
Her relationship with the dragon king made me feel anxious. The way he is overly affectionate with her only when he needs to be shows his manipulative nature. I don’t trust him. Her lack of questioning motives really shows the audience just how loyal she is and trusting and what happens to her breaks my heart but could’ve been avoided had she asked relevant questions. Because of this, it hardens her further and this added depth to her character and hope for revenge and answers will compel me to read the next book.
A cliffhanger? Not a huge one that I’m losing sleep over thinking about what could happen but enough for you to hate that the book ended there.

And Cassandrea is most loyal to her king. As she works side by side with Kerr, a Kelpie lord (I loved the wording of „Lord of the moonlit mire“!) she starts to catch feelings for him. For the first time in a long time she has someone by her side who seems to understand her and see more than the monster, a siren is considered to be! As he’s the same as a kelpie. But when the city falls, nothing is like it seems before!
This was such an amazing ride! I loved every page and I almost couldn’t stop reading. Amazing and fast paced. A tough but lovable heroine. A little romance, no spice, only behind closed doors and a little fade to black. A heroine that is not a teenager but a grown up woman is a big plus in my eyes as well!
The second book is a 100% YES! for me. Definitely going to continue the story. Can’t wait to start right now.

Along the way, she faces hostility, kindness, and moral dilemmas, all while serving a dragon king who may be her only ally. The story blends action, political intrigue, and emotional depth, with a focus on Cassandrea’s internal conflict and her relationships with Torquil, Mairi, and the mysterious fae warrior.
The world is populated by a variety of mythical creatures, each with their own cultures, histories, and roles in the war. What makes it a very interesting backdrop for the story.
Cassandarea is both predator and victim, feared and reviled by those around her due to her being half siren. She is fiercely loyal to Valderan. Her internal struggles with her nature, betrayals and the scars she carries make her a deeply human character. I would have loved it if her emotions were more expressed towards the grief of Ryker.
This book is a promising dark fantasy with a strong protagonist and a rich world. I enjoyed reading this book, but I often had to track back a bit to keep up with where we are in the story.

This is an absolutely brilliant book! It's got the drama and suspense one would expect from a magical war.
Cassandrea and Kerr are a brilliant pairing, the plot is woven around them beautifully and the tension is palpable from the second they meet.
The style of writing isn't what I would usually read, but I found that I absolutely love Evelyn's writing and I couldn't put the book down.
The story is easy to follow, but doesn't give you everything at once, it unfolds gradually without feeling slow or that it's dragging.
The pacing of Oaths of Land and Sea is utterly brilliant. It's engaging without being overwhelming, and has the perfect amount of betrayal and heartache to leave you desperate for more.
The world is beautifully crafted and thoughtfully developed, It is the kind of world you can lose yourself in, with rich details and well developed relationships. The loyalty, pain, betrayal and love are so vividly written that you feel every emotion alongside Cassandrea as the pieces of this intricate puzzle fall into place.
I have so much love for the characters and this world, I can't wait to see what unfolds in the next book 💜

⚔️I really don't even know when to start!!!
A few books have drawn me into the story from the very first moment and I can say that this book it's one of these!!! I almost thought the author was a siren herself thinking how vivid and graphic she wrote in every page! Oaths of Land and Sea begins with our fierce but loyal to death Cassandrea, a half-blood siren, sent by the dragon king Valderan sent to sabotage and take down the enemy king dragon and his town, Terren, who rebelled against Valderan.
On her way there she is not alone, there comes Kerr, a Kelpie Lord(a charming one), who follows her on the trip and love and sparkles glow around them, as their relationship blooms like a flower and he sees through her "dangerous" personality she embodies, that of a monster, a deadly siren!
The ending was a cliffhanger for me, I really wanted more, it's read it in one sitting and I would do it any time if I had to re read it again. I have already recommended to some of my book friends and to anyone else who loves romantasy and a story to keep in their hearts forever! I can't wait to read the second book!!!⚔️

Loved this book and can’t wait to read book 2!!
This book has become one of my new favorites! With action, mystery, romance, and a little spice, this adventure gave me plenty of reasons to keep turning the pages.
Cassandria captured my heart. A siren and a warrior, she faces painful changes and dangerous responsibilities, and I found myself rooting for her as she navigated it all. I love a heroine whose strength comes with a story worth discovering.
And then there is Kerr. Oh, Kerr! This Kelpie Lord brings confidence, flirtation, and humor that make his scenes with Cass such a pleasure to read. Their teasing had me smiling, and their chemistry had me eager to see where things would go.
I also loved how the other characters brought their own personalities and questions into the story. Even when I wasn’t sure whom to trust, I wanted to learn more. With rebellion brewing and unexpected turns changing the stakes, there was always something pulling me forward.
By the final stretch, I needed to know what happened next. And when I reached the end? Mind blown! I was absolutely ready for more!
Now on to book 2: City in the Storm.

It really took some concentration getting started, even though it threw us right in. After the first scene it died down and then time jumped. It was confusing for a chapter and then the next it said that it was a time jump. So I was like, oh. Makes sense now. I felt like I did a bunch of reading and didn’t really remember much. I did enjoy the flirty banter between Cassandrea and Kerr. I found myself saying, who the hell thought it was a good idea to put a siren and kelpie together? The attraction was pretty immediate and I’m glad they waited a while before doing anything. I wish that Cassandrea trusted her gut more. Her thoughts were often left in her mind and forgotten. And she was always onto something!
After Kerr was introduced, I knew he was no good. I just had a feeling the entire time that he was leading them to their death. Everything wad going too smoothly. All in all, I would read the next book. Mostly because I’m really curious about what’s going to happen after that cliffhanger. I just know that Valderan’s going to do some messed up stuff and sacrifice everybody.

This story delivers action, loyalty, and just the right amount of flirting to make you smile. The writing is vivid and engaging, making it easy to feel fully immersed in Cassandrea’s journey. I loved her character and watching her navigate a world full of danger, secrets, and magic.

Listen to me when I tell you I absolutely ate this book up… and loved every single bite. I found it a little difficult to get into initially, but the way the beginning scenes dig their talons into you and completely pull you into the world had me smiling. This was everything I have been looking for - mythical creatures, politics and war, betrayal and the questioning of everything you have ever known… When I tell you, at the turning point/climax of this novel that my jaw might as well have detached from my skull and buried itself at the earth’s core - I am not exaggerating. This author really knows how to catch their readers off guard, and this is coming from a chronically suspicious reader who guesses a lot ahead of the plot. I am absolutely excited to devour City in the Storm (the second book in this series), so much so I had to fight to put my Kobo down to write my review!! My only criticism was that it was a pretty short read, but don’t we all endlessly wish for more? Anyways, back to Cass’s world!
