No Grass Grows on a Busy Street: 25 Years on the Road With the Stranglers

Rate this book
To mark the 25th anniversary of Baz Warne joining iconic British rock band The Stranglers, ‘No Grass Grows On A Busy Street’ is a retrospective compilation of detailed tour diaries, interviews and stories that give an unrivalled level of access to this legendary group.

As a proud North-eastern son, Baz reflects poignantly on his life in music, from humble beginnings to the world’s biggest stages. Looking back on a musical career spanning five different decades of music and popular culture, ‘No Grass Grows On A Busy Street’ features untold anecdotes and newly written contemplative commentary from Baz himself, proving that time is often the best lens.

With every word he has poured into his pieces for The Stranglers’ website over the years, Baz shows his dedication to the fans. Joining the band during a famously tumultuous period, it is no coincidence that Baz beginning to co-front the band alongside JJ Burnel has, despite the tragic loss of original bandmates and dear friends Dave Greenfield and Jet Black, made for a golden age in The Stranglers’ career, full of sell-out tours and record-breaking new albums.

Having been a fan of the Stranglers since 1977 and seeing them play live intermittently over the decades I just had to buy this book. After a bit of a lull for the band in the 90s, Baz Warne joining them 25 years ago has seen the Stranglers regenerated. A massive return to form both in the studio and live on stage.

Baz almost turned down the invite to join the band. Thankfully, for all concerned, he was persuaded to sign up. Yes, you will get a minority moaning that it isn't the real Stranglers but, I would argue they are better live now than they ever were. Saw them five times in the 2010s. Four times in Dunfermline, the other in Edinburgh. Baz was magnificent, as were all the band, on each occasion.

In short, if you are a fan of the Stranglers, then this is a must buy.
