Playing catch in the park is a beloved pastime for one young boy and his father, and they often make time to play together after work and school obligations are done. But as the boy gets older and other interests begin to take priority over baseball, the father finds himself alone, waiting patiently for the next game. Time passes swiftly, however, and the opportunity to play catch becomes increasingly slim. Luckily, love is larger than any one moment, and patience and connection can grow as generations of family develop and change. This rhyming picture book is an elegant and heartfelt homage to the love a father has for his son. Though the son is the primary protagonist, the father is always present in the background, offering support and encouragement even when the boy is focused on pursuing his own interests. The book is written as a picture book and is accessible to young readers as a result of its design, but the narrative speaks most clearly to sentimental readers who appreciate the emotions found in profound relationships between fathers and their sons. Reminiscent of early picture books, the illustrations feature a limited color palette and careful shading that bring the story to life, helping the book to feel at once classic and contemporary. A touching emotional arc travels through the book, offering readers a glimpse into the grief and catharsis that are so prevalent in human lives. An excellent gift for fathers and sons to share, this book reminds readers of the power of unconditional love in a world that is constantly vying for one's attention. This is a touching addition to storybook collections, especially for readers who share a love of baseball.
