Though the son is the primary protagonist, the father is always present in the background, offering support and encouragement even when the boy is focused on pursuing his own interests. The book is written as a picture book and is accessible to young readers as a result of its design, but the narrative speaks most clearly to sentimental readers who appreciate the emotions found in profound relationships between fathers and their sons. Reminiscent of early picture books, the illustrations feature a limited color palette and careful shading that bring the story to life, helping the book to feel at once classic and contemporary.
