A fun, wild ride of murderous intrigue, shifting loyalties, and rich people behaving badly, The Getaway was the exact kind of thriller that everyone needs to throw into their summer beach bag. Coming in at under 300 pages, the short, cliffhanger chapters and super-twisty plotting meant it was all I could do to hold on for dear life as the events slowly unraveled. You see, the pages of this book contained oodles of delicious dark secrets and messy relationships. By putting them together, Scott delivered a story that was juicy, addictive, and just the right amount of over-the-top. After all, with a great, big heaping dose of dysfunctional friendships and marriages in disarray, it was no surprise at all when their bodies started dropping like flies, giving it all a very And Then There Were None-meets-The Hunting Party feel with a dash of the drama-fueled vibes from Big Little Lies.

I do have to say, however, that this locked-room thriller did have a somewhat slow start as I worked out who everyone was in the large cast of characters. In spite of that, though, I was quickly pulled into the story thanks to the drama-packed storyline. After all, with a long list of secrets, a wealthy crew of untrustworthy individuals, and a hurricane descending on a remote estate, it was only a matter of time until it all blew sky high. And let me tell you, when it finally did, my desire for a dramatic ending was beyond satisfied. Perfect for fans of compulsively readable books with a sense of rising paranoia, I suggest grabbing this one now. An easy-to-inhale read filled with hidden truths, unspoken pacts, and slippery alliances, I had a blast trying to puzzle out this whodunnit before the adrenaline-fueled climax. So go on. Suspend your disbelief and get ready for the ride. Rating of 4 stars.

I mean, it had potential… but this book was just not good. First of all, the couples all had matching first letters in their names. Did the author think readers would be too dumb to remember who everyone was if not for this gimmick, or did she realize the characters weren’t fleshed out enough to be memorable on their own. Second, everything was too unrealistic. There’s no way police or first responders wouldn’t have reached them for so long. Half the decisions these “adults” make are completely asinine. Lily’s two best friends don’t even know about each other. Third, no ibuprofen after a head injury - acetaminophen would have been the correct treatment. Fourth, cord not chord. This had ALL the ingredients for an incredible thriller: couples trapped together during a hurricane, secrets coming out, betrayals, and constant reveals. And there was definitely enough intrigue to keep me going.

Unfortunately, it was more slow burn than page-turning popcorn thriller, and I never connected enough with the characters to really care about what happened to them. The ending didn't give me the big payoff I was hoping for either.

The narrator did an excellent job with all the different voices and personalities, although that actually made some of the characters' more irritating traits stand out even more!

I became confused with the character Marley. If she was " best friends" with Lily how did she not know about Lily's other " best friend" Gemma? Was Marley pregnant? All the hints of her being sick etc..did I miss something? Why all of a sudden was Lily "recovered", suspicious timing.

This was…ok. I know that isn’t how I usually start my reviews, but honestly, it pretty much sums up my experience. I stayed interested enough to find out how everything played out, but I also think a lot of that had to do with the audiobook. Had I not been listening at 2x speed while doing housework and instead had to sit down and read this with my eyeballs, I probably would have set it aside for something a little more engaging.

I received the ALC from Brilliance Audio via NetGalley a week after publication, so I jumped right into it.

If you’re newer to the thriller genre, I actually think this could be a good fit. It’s formulaic in a way that makes it easy to follow, even with all the different secrets, relationships, and moving pieces being introduced. There’s a hurricane, a group of couples who have known each other for years, plenty of secrets and lies, some wealthy Hamptons social circles, and a locked-room-style setup when the storm leaves everyone isolated. It has all the ingredients for a juicy weekend thriller, and the atmosphere is definitely there. This is the kind of book that would pair nicely with a rainy weekend when you want something easy to sink into.

My biggest issue was that none of it felt particularly fresh. I’ve read several variations of this same basic setup before, particularly the hurricane-as-a-locked-room mystery, the long-standing couples getting together for their annual holiday, and the inevitable peeling back of everyone’s carefully constructed lives. There wasn’t really anything here that made me think, Oh, I haven’t seen this before. I found myself recognizing the general trajectory and anticipating where some of the reveals were headed, so it never quite reached that level of suspense where I was desperately trying to figure everything out.

That said, predictable doesn’t necessarily mean unenjoyable, and this held my attention well enough to keep going. It’s more of a comfort-food thriller than a genre-shaking one. If you enjoy familiar formulas and don’t mind being able to see some of the twists coming, there’s still enough going on to make it an entertaining, atmospheric read.

The audiobook was easily my favorite part of the experience. It was narrated by Soneela Nankani, who did an exceptional job. At first, I was a little disappointed that this wasn’t a full-cast production because the story feels like the perfect setup for one, with so many characters and relationships to keep track of. In the end, though, I’m actually glad it was a solo narration because Nankani handled all of the characters so well. Her nuanced portrayals of the various male and female characters were impressive, and each voice remained distinct and consistent with the character throughout.

Her pacing at 1x was wonderful, but what really impressed me was how well her performance held up when I sped it up to 2x. I could still hear the inflections, character distinctions, and subtle changes in delivery without everything becoming distorted or losing its personality. That made this an especially easy audiobook to fly through while doing other things.

I’d recommend this more to newer thriller readers or anyone who enjoys a familiar, stereotypical thriller setup and doesn’t need every twist to be a complete surprise. For more seasoned thriller readers, especially those who have read their fair share of hurricane-based or locked-room mysteries, you may find yourself thinking you’ve been here before.

If you have the choice of formats, though, I definitely recommend the audiobook. Soneela Nankani’s performance elevated the experience for me and, honestly, is probably what kept me reading to the end.

The cards were so much fun because nothing says "friendship" quite like publicly exposing everyone's secrets while they're trapped together! And these people? Woof. Every relationship came with baggage, every conversation felt sus, and every new twist shifted the narrative. The locked room setting was perfect because there was nowhere to escape, nowhere to hide and absolutely no shortage of bad decisions. If messy, twisty, dramatic and rich people behaving badly is your vibe, add this one to your never-ending TBR!

✨Book Review- The Getaway✨

Kieran Scott has been one of my auto-buy authors longer than any other author. I love her writing style and how even though there is murder and mystery and suspense, they somehow remain light and quick reads. This is definitely an adult book, but it reads quickly and easily, like YA. And her books always tie the mystery up with a neat little bow and have more twists and turns than a tree. I NEVER know how it’s going to end or who the murderer is! This book was no exception! I DID NOT see that ending coming!

Another of my favorite things about Kieran’s adult novels is they center around people my age. She has truly mastered creating books that age with her readers. I was reading her books back in grade school and high school and I love that as I get older, I can still enjoy her books and relate with her characters (ok I will never be a billionaire with a house in the Hamptons, but you get what I mean).

I would LOVE a mini series where each book follows the Billings girls and shows where they are now (IYKYK). But I’ll read whatever KS writes!

The Getaway was a solid closed circle "And Then There Were None" style mystery set in the Hamptons. A group of friends gather for the weekend as a storm bears down.

The cast is large (four couples, an ex, and several members staff) and I actually loved that the author named the couples in a way I could remember (Marley and Marshall, Juliet and Josh, Gemma and Grant, etc.) Thanks to those of us who struggle with all the names.

This reminded me a little of The Four Seasons with murder as three of the couples always vacationed together, but then Lincoln and Lily split and Lincoln remarried .... Hazel. Clearly this will not do!! There's also a dog named Wintour (after Anna, I presume. This IS the Hamptons after all...)

One person dies, and then another. The author did a great job of throwing suspicion on everyone, though I felt there was a point of the book where things started going around in circles.

But overall I enjoyed The Getaway. It was a fun read that kept me guessing until the end!

The Getaway was a very “I’m having lots of fun but I also have several questions” experience for me.

I really enjoyed the premise. Gave me lots of slasher vibes that made my slasher-loving brain happy. The mystery kept me interested too.

I also have to defend one thing from this book because I saw people complain about it in their reviews: the matching couple names. Suzy and Sean, Juliet and Josh, etc. I thought it was smart. There were a lot of characters and couples so having them share an initial made it much easier to remember who was in a relationship with who. I even liked that Hazel’s name doesn’t follow the pattern. Lincoln and Hazel. Like, whether that was intentional or not, it gave me the impression that she was an outsider who didn’t belong into this little ecosystem.

The main problem for me was that the more I thought about what was happening, the more holes I found. Some of the medical stuff didn’t add up, the killers motivations didn’t make much sense and there were a lot of situations where I just couldn’t understand how certain things were physically possible.

Still, I was entertained. This book has a very messy slasher quality where people keep making increasingly questionable choices and I just sat there waiting to see who gets killed off next. So, was everything believable? Absolutely not. Did I keep reading anyway? Unfortunately for my standards, yes.

This was a fast and fun book. I love a good locked room mystery and even more so when there’s a storm coming! With multiple POVs, the audiobook made it easy to keep track of the characters. The narrator was extremely helpful keeping characters distinct and easy to follow. This is the kind of popcorn thriller you’ll binge without even realizing! The characters and relationships were messy and untrustworthy so the dramatics were satisfying for me… oh and highly entertaining!

The Getaway had such an intriguing premise, and I really wanted to love this one. A locked-room-style thriller centered around a group of couples at an isolated getaway sounded right up my alley, and the beginning definitely pulled me in. Unfortunately, as the story went on, it just didn’t quite come together for me.

The setup was probably my favorite part. There was an immediate sense that something wasn’t quite right, and I was curious to figure out what was actually happening and how all of these characters fit into the bigger picture. Around a third of the way through, though, I felt the pacing start to slow down, and I struggled to stay as invested as I had been initially. The longer chapters and third-person narration also made it a little harder for me to connect with the story, although those are definitely personal reading preferences.

I had mixed feelings about the characters as well. There were a few I enjoyed, but others were difficult for me to connect with or root for. I did think the matching initials between the couples—Marshall and Marley, Gemma and Grant, Juliet and Josh—were a cute little detail and actually helped me keep everyone straight with such a large cast.

Ultimately, the biggest issue for me was the final reveal. I love an unexpected or slightly over-the-top thriller twist when I can buy into the explanation behind it, but this one required a little too much suspension of disbelief for me personally. There were also a few elements introduced throughout the story that I expected to become important later but never seemed to fully pay off, which left me with some unanswered questions.

I can absolutely see this working better for readers who enjoy slower-burn, character-heavy locked-room mysteries and don’t mind a more far-fetched reveal. For me, though, it was one of those books where I loved the concept more than the execution. There was a lot of potential here, but unfortunately it never quite delivered the payoff I was hoping for.

If you enjoy locked-room mysteries, messy friendships, wealthy people with dark secrets, and everyone being just a little suspicious then I’d recommend this book! I had a lot of fun reading it especially because these characters are trapped with each other AND their secrets as a hurricane bears down on them. I also felt like it sort of gave off And Then There Were None vibes as each of these “friends” slowly start to turn on each other making the situation even more dire! All around it’s a fun and twisty thriller and I enjoyed reading it.

Holy hell. Twists, turns, deaths, hurricanes, secrets, murder or accident?! WOW. I did NOT expect that ending. That’s honestly all I can say. 😂

A bunch of very rich people get together every year to be rich in the Hamptons for a week: Marley and Marshall, Suzy and Sean, Juliette and Josh, and Lincoln and Lilly. Except this year, Lilly isn’t there. Lincoln has a new wife instead, and Gemma and Grant are also joining the group with their twin teenage daughters.

It’s an odd mix from the start, and there is A LOT of animosity toward Lincoln’s new wife.

Every year, Lilly leaves everyone a little blue envelope with a sweet, loving greeting for the week. But this year, Lilly isn’t there, so no one is expecting the envelopes. Imagine everyone’s surprise when they start showing up anyway.

Except this time, the envelopes aren’t sweet or loving.

They contain dark secrets about the people in the group, and suddenly everyone is wondering who sent them and how much everyone else knows.

And then… a hurricane hits.

People start turning up dead, and suddenly this fun, fancy week in the Hamptons has turned into something very different. How did everything go so wrong? Where did the envelopes come from? Was it murder or an accident? And who’s next?!

I really liked that the story was told from the perspectives of several of the women. The constant switching back and forth kept me guessing and made the mystery of what was actually happening even more exciting. Every time I thought I had something figured out, there was another question or twist.

The only thing keeping this from 5 stars for me was that there were a few moments when I desperately needed the book to move faster. 😂 The tension was high, I had a million questions, and then we’d occasionally veer into something that felt unrelated to me and made me want to scream, “GET BACK TO THE MURDER!”

But overall, this was a very fun, twisty read, and that ending definitely got me. 👀

This is my first NetGalley read and honestly I really enjoyed this book. It was fast-paced, kept me hooked, it was cut to the chase kinda book.

At first, I was really baffled by the number of characters (the whole story is based around all of them) but the author helped her readers by giving couples the same initials which honestly was a very creative tactic. Once I got hang of the names, it turned into a fun read.

With all those characters and couple of tragedies, it shifted into a ‘whodunnit’ and I felt I was part of solving the puzzle. The ending was solid too, I never managed to guess who the culprit was as they were all seemed suspicious in their own way.

One thing though, it could have been a 4-star⭐️ read for me but the whole ‘NOTES’ element that causes the chaos kind of just vanished. Maybe I missed the point, but it felt like it needed more.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one. The pacing was perfect and really enjoyed the puzzle-solving.

The Getaway is such a fun, juicy and entertaining popcorn thriller. It had me hooked right from the start and I just needed to know how this chaos would end. The beginning is slower as I needed to know all the characters and who was with whom. Once I got that sorted out I was in for a wild ride of drama and murders. It then becomes fast paced with something happening at every chapter. The amount of secrets between this friend group was insane and it's what kept me hooked.

The characters are all so fun to hate, as I didn't know who to cheer for, I'm not sure I really loved any of them, but I was highly invested. It's just a fast read that is impossible to put down because you just need to know what is going to be uncovered next and who's going to die.

Overall, this was a fun popcorn thriller with so much drama and secrets that satisfied my craving. It was just very entertaining and I had a good time reading it.

This was a rich people behaving badly, locked room, trapped in a storm and everyone keeps ending up dead, thriller.

The synopsis refers to “three couples,” but I don’t know where that came from. There were three couples who were all friends, staying at the house of a fourth couple, and then a fifth random couple there, plus the hired help, kids and teenagers, a random bro who shows up later for no reason, two sisters who used to be part of the family… just a ton of characters for a locked room story. I had a little bit of a tough time keeping everyone straight and how they were related. I suggest taking notes.

The reveal of who the killer ended up being was kind of out of left field when the entire book was spent setting up everyone’s motive. Some of the people who died were also seemingly random. When we found out about one of them, my immediate thought was, “who?”

Overall, it wasn’t a bad read. I just had a tough time following who everyone was and what the ultimate motives were for half of the things that were happening.

Unfortunately, this one just didn’t work for me. I went into The Getaway hoping for a suspenseful, twisty thriller, but I found myself pretty bored for most of the book. The pacing felt slow, and I had a hard time getting invested in the characters or caring about what was happening.

There were a few moments that caught my attention, but overall, the story felt predictable and didn’t have the tension I was hoping for. I kept waiting for that moment where everything would come together and really pull me in, but it never quite got there for me.

The premise intrigued me but unfortunately I didn’t love it. Is there such a thing as too many characters? I think this book had too many for my own liking and I had mixed feelings about all of them. I didn’t connect with any of the characters and you’d think with so many characters, there’d be at least one I’d connect with. Nope! This book also required a little too much suspension of disbelief for me personally. But hey- this could be a me thing and I still think you should read it if you have this on your TBR. 3.25 ✨ I liked the idea of the book, rich people trapped in a mansion in the Hamptons during a hurricane with a murderer among the guest list. I really just never connected to any of the characters and all the couples had the same first initial in their names…Every single one. Strange. I did not fully guess who the killer was, though I had my suspicions. Honestly though, it wasn’t shocking and I found I really didn’t care what happened to him or anyone else in the book. It was a fun read at times, but just not quite enough to redeem it.

So… this one was a bit of an ehhh for me. 😅

It had SO much potential, but with the massive cast of characters and the constant chaos, I just wasn’t as invested as I wanted to be. There was always something happening, but I feel like it could’ve been executed so much better.

The saving grace? THE AUDIO! The narrator really carried this one for me and kept me engaged all the way to the end. 🎧

Clue in the Hamptons

Everyone running around and chasing after one another felt slightly unrealistic. Gemma keeping her relationship to Lily to herself felt like an unnecessary red herring. Juliet’s death felt a little over the top, taking her son to resolve Marley’s infertility issues felt a bit crass. Grants involvement was interesting, but his wife and kids turning on him so quickly, and ability to emotionally cut off from him felt contrived. At times the plot felt too busy, compacted with too many characters which made it difficult to be invested in any characters problems or future. It felt forced and cliche to pin Lincoln and Marshall’s parents as wealthy villains that would cut their son off after a miscarriage. I couldn’t read the epilogue because it felt like killing off Juliet to close the loop on Marley’s story felt like a writers cop out driven by plot contrivance. I finished the book because I have OCD about quitting books I pick up, but this was definitely a book I read to complete, rather than a book read with excitement for each next chapter.

The Getaway Review

My first ARC read and review. All and all a really good thriller with suspense from beginning to end. I do feel that there are too many characters so I got lost on what each character was going through from time to time but, definitely a recommended book to read.

This book just didn’t interest me it did nothing new and the characters were not well written.

Also the couples having names that started with the same letter was odd

I will say I don’t think it’s entirely the authors fault as there i can see potential I just feel this genre has to do something really good to keep me engaged as there has been so many in recent years
