After an embarrassing end to her teenage crush, grey-hat hacker Alexa Stone vowed to spend the rest of her life avoiding Nolan de Luca. Reliving the memory in her nightmares is quite bad enough without seeing him in person. But when her meddling bestie volunteers her to fix a tiny ransomware issue with Nolan’s laptop, Alexa can’t say no.
Nolan’s spent the past decade regretting the way he walked out on Alexa. Yes, okay, he was a murder suspect and she was a minor who lied about her age, but he should still have handled the situation better. Now she’s coming to California, to the vineyard where he sought refuge after the death of their former roommate, and he wants a do-over.
But nothing’s ever simple. Alexa isn’t impressed when Nolan becomes an accidental porn star, and then there’s the interior designer determined to give his entire life a makeover. Which, being honest, it probably needs, but complications lead to mistakes. Mistakes that threaten his business and more.
Alexa doesn’t do complications, or people, or the great outdoors. So why does she keep returning to Gold Country?
Hard Code is a standalone romantic suspense novel with a neurospicy heroine, an uptight hero, plenty of dark humour, and a morally grey girl squad.
Elise Noble is an English rose with a few thorns who loves chocolate, sleep, and well-defined abs. Not hers, unfortunately. She lives near London with a horse who eats all her money and three dogs who eat everything else.
Elise writes real, gutsy heroines and flawed but swoon-worthy heroes in stories that mix mystery and mayhem, humour and happily-ever-afters.
I was wondering about Alexa for a long time and getting to know her in this story was simply amazing. Her past is more than rough but what she made of it is brilliant. She lived in Blackstone House with Nolan and had a crush on him because he cared and cooked for her.
When Nolan's laptop caught a virus, Brax tells him Alexa will take care of it but she's dreading seeing him again. When they finally meet again Nolan makes Alexa think he's involved with his interior designer while she plays her part perfectly with Chase at her side, as always.
Different kinds of accidents happen and the chaos unravels.. who's trying to harm Dionysus and why? Alexa is deeply involved in solving this situation with the help of a few of her friends and the longer she stays with Nolan, the more aware she gets of still wanting him.
This story has it all, drama, funny bits, gross moments and lots of Alexa skills you'll admire.
I love this book, like all the others of this series and I'm looking forward to reading Hard Evidence next
Another winning book by Elise Noble in the Blackstone House series. This is the story of Alexa, the diminutive computer hacker/expert extraordinaire and Nolan, now a winery owner and wine maker. Both previously lived at Blackstone House many years ago, before a murder sent everyone in different directions. I would suggest reading the previous books in this series, just to get an idea of who all the characters are. It may be a bit confusing for first time readers to know each characters place in the story, although they are reasonably well explained. The characters are bold and colourful and easy to get to know. Fast paced and nearly impossible to put down. I highly recommend all books by Elise Noble.
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an Advance Reader Copy.
Hard Code by Elise Noble is hard to put down! I loved Nolan’s story and who would not love and respect Alexa? We should all be so lucky to have such dedicated people in our lives. It’s long—I stayed up all night reading—but worth it. I wish we could have a 5 years later bonus to check on the neighbors! My only negative is like many authors, she dabbles in criticism of our politics. Considering the hot mess Britain is right now, no one needs to hear authors waxing politics. Noble is a great author and story teller and we read her stories because we need to escape, not because we want to be reminded of Pelosi’s billions. Read the book. Make your own decision. It’s worth reading.
Another great read from Elise Noble. As always, we have intriguing characters, a story that twists and turns in unexpected directions, plenty of humour, romance, friendships and tension. I never want to put down books from this author. She creates a world that you become invested in and don't want to to leave.
This book features the elusive grey-hat hacker Alexa, who has been on the fringes of several earlier books in this series, and finally has her (unwilling) turn in the spotlight. It is a read that was worth the wait. Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, but it's more fun to read them all.
Be warned, you'll likely want to read all of the earlier books from all the series, probably more than once!
It was so good to finally have Alexa's story to read. This story is a classic Elise book and could be read as a stand alone but I think you will get more out of it if read in order with the rest. For readers who have read the other Blackstone house books this one really helps with a lot of the back ground and what occurred at the time while also giving you Alexa's back story.
Some is a little predictable but not in a boring way. There are some nice little twists along the way ;) A good book to curl up with and devour in a few hours. We do get to have the supporting cast of the Choir helping out. I'm now looking forward to what comes next.
A Great Book! Hard Code is the 6th book of The Blackstone House Romantic Suspense series by Elise Noble. Alexa disappeared mostly remained hidden behind the scenes of her former roommates for the last ten years. Slowly, she has become more visible and now has met up with crush Nolan. Nolan and Alexa’s friendship ended ten years when he realized she was a 16 year old run away and he was 20. Alexa is brought in to evaluate why unexplained incidents are happening at his vineyard. Alexa, a Computer wizard changes Nolan’s life while he changes her’s. Although both of their childhood pasts were tragic, they find love. Hard Code is about survival and is filled with suspense.
Wow! Just wow! Alexa has long been an enigma in the Blackstone House series; hiding in the shadows, cruising the dark web, and rarely venturing forth to help her friends in person. That all changes when Alexa is tricked into helping her teen-age crush, Nolan. Nolan had run afoul of a particularly nasty ransomware ploy and was trying to extricate himself from his interior designer's clutches when Alexa literally dropped in to help. Luckily with some snark, soul-bearing, and favors collected Alexa was able to get her happy ending with Nolan.
Nolan is a great guy trying to enjoy his quiet life while rebuilding the winery left to him by his grandfather. Alexa is a morally grey hacker with a fierce loyalty to those who make it into her circle.
One of her friends "helps" her by pushing her back into the orbit of the only man she's ever wanted.
This book has a unique story line with amazing characters. Mystery, romance, action, and laughs this book has it all. This is a stand-alone story in the Blackstone House series, great by itself and amazing when woven into a larger mystery.
There has been so little talked about when it comes to Alexa and I have so been looking forward to her book. I am stuck in my house after a snow and ice storm so what better way to spend my time. I really enjoyed getting to know Alexa more and Nolan too. I loved it so much I couldn't put it down and finished it with in 48 hours. The story line never followed what I expected it to which is great really. So glad to have a chance to received an advanced reader copy of the book.
I have been waiting to hear Alexa and Nolan's story since the first Blackstone House book and it was definitely worth the wait! The complexity and depth of Alexa and Nolan's characters as well as their chemistry together is amazing. Add in the return of other Blackstone House characters, a winery, a mystery, a little revenge, and a sweet German Shepherd and what is there to not love about this book except that it had to end!
Absolutely loved Alexa, finding out about her past and what made her a teenage nomad, her mysteries and the matter of fact way her mind works. But also the love and protection she holds for her friends And meeting Nolan, seeing how they click and work together. The chemistry is great, the worrying, as usual, perfect.
Wonderful book in the Blackstone series. Alexa, Logan, most of the rest of the Blackstone residents, the Choir, and miscellaneous assorted friends/ acquaintances help Logan get out of trouble. Also Logan and Alexa get together. Much fun. Really looking forward to the next book in n the series.
Alexa and Nolan's story! It was hard to read sometimes just because of Alexa's past but it was also spicy. I love when the past characters come into the scene. LOVED the ending, well deserved! Another fabulous book by Elise Noble!
I knew this was Nolan and Alexa's book. Probably my most anticipated book in quite a while and it did not disappoint. It was well worth the wait, but as always Elise has left me panting for the next book. Well done Elise!
I was very excited to finally get to meet the enigma that is Alexa. This book is truly action packed with humor, mystery and some spicy moments thrown into the mix.
I have been waiting for this story for years! Alexa has been one to exist in the shadows, silently helping with questionable morals, as is sometimes the case in Ms. Noble’s stories. Alexa is tricked into helping Nolan, an old crush and close friend. Sometimes it takes a hard shove out of one’s comfort zone to move forward. Nolan has definitely bitten off more than he can chew in his current situation at the vineyard – leading to multiple intrigues. I love how Alexa’s network pulls together to solve the problems and give several people what they so richly deserve, both good and bad.
Be warned that this book does mention some dark acts of evil.
