In Volume 3 of FINE PRINT (aka "Why sex with gods is NOT a good idea"), we dive in deep and discover that not all winged things are angels, not all horned ones bring damnation, and surprise-surprise, no amount of unbridled bliss can actually solve your problems.
Like any painkiller, bliss only takes you so far.
This is a lesson that unlucky-in-love Lauren Thomas is going to have to learn the hard way, despite the aid of some of the underworld's foremost incubi. Even in Lauren's unique position - having divine entities at your romantic beck and call - wrestling with the past is no one's idea of a good time. Not that things are any easier for the immortals in Lauren's orbit; whether you execute contracts or shoot heart-shaped arrows, interpersonal dynamics always end up complicating things.
Strap in, everyone – this is where it gets miserable.
Stjepan Šejić is a Croatian comic book writer and artist, known for his work on the series Witchblade, Aphrodite IX, Sunstone, and The Darkness among others.
Sexy people have way too little sex and talk way too much.
There's a plot in here, and I can follow it at times, but it is all tangled up with dozens of characters, some of whom have changed their names at various points, with new ones still being introduced in large quantities even in this, the third volume. Mostly they are Greek gods, but there are some Egyptian ones popping in, and there are also a bunch of regular humans -- some on the path to becoming more than human thanks to a weird contract system and godly interference. And this is in a shared universe with the Punderworld title, so those folks can show up anytime too.
But did I mention everyone looks sexy and they occasionally have sex?
So, yeah, I don't understand this series, but I'll be back for the next volume.

Lauren is starting to get the hang of this deities-of-pleasure-on-call business. Now, if only she could get away from the echoes of emotional frailty, the suffering of memories gone awry, and the reverential musings on death at the hands of the gods. Love and desire twine and bind in numerous, dangerous ways.
FINE PRINT v3 goes a bit deeper into the well of old, western mythology and its contemporary personification of its most classical elements as jealous, peacocking, apathetic, and/or vindictive creatures lacking self-restraint. The current volume also goes a bit deeper into the well of the circumspect: Lauren is feeling the consequences of her actions; Leliah voices her uncertainty over her personal relationship with Heureca; and everyone else busily attends an orgy without noticing their whole existence may be closer to getting wiped out than they realize.
The story splinters and reunites, but mostly for good reasons. After all, one might be lulled into feeling sorry for Lauren and her exceedingly selfish and shortsighted view of human relations, and one might be inclined to ponder why Leliah doesn't use more skullduggery to get what she wants out of her eternal life. But FINE PRINT v3 nudges a bit of reality into the mix. A life of passion (Lauren), of chasing higher highs, cannot be had without experiencing its reciprocal lows; and similarly, a life of confidence and certitude (Leliah) cannot be attained without getting lost, getting heartbroken, or being forced to let go of something precious.
Slowly, characters stumble into the realm of difficult truths. Can happiness be found in the midst of manufactured pleasure? And if the presumption of love and affection can be rendered from such mire, does that mean it is more vulnerable to ruin than were it consecrated otherwise?
Šejić's work stands out in this volume for doing what so little of his previous work has done consistently: dependable page compositions, reliable lettering, pervasive metaphors, dialogue that both instructs (readers) and compels (characters). The current volume puts it all together. The writing is solid. For example, readers can jump into scenes halfway underway and not feel as if the characters are rushing their way toward a predetermined end.
Further, increasingly dynamic compositions move the story in clever and entertaining directions. A circular panel nested among conspiratorially arranged vertical or horizontal panels lends one the impression that a spotlight rests on a rather unfortunate protagonist. Expansive, multicolored artwork highlights the impossible-to-define physical pleasures that Thadeus and Leliah bring their charge, but the tremulous, multicolored orgasms shift the story's thematic intrigue bit by bit. In FINE PRINT v3, the artwork complements the story in ways prior volumes did not have room to accommodate. And since the story is legitimately pivoting in new (and dangerous) directions, one looks forward to what the author has in store for this maelstrom of messy characters.
Okay, I tried again in a desperate attempt to reconnect with the series, but vol 3 has all the same issues as vol 2. I expect and understand this sort of meandering, nothing-is-really-about-anything, infinite-set-up-without-payoff approach with serials, especially when they have really unforgiving deadlines, but I really think this is Sejic's storytelling style (and besides, as far as I understand, he's writing this on his own release schedule?).
It also sucks that these characters often shift critical design elements and even sexes, because that is a really cool aspect!!I like his design sensibilities!!but his severe sameface syndrome makes me always wonder, wait, do I know this character? Or is this yet another woman who looks IDENTICAL to every other woman (lol @ the cubi in the final chapter, it's staged like a reveal but I was like, do I know this girl, or...?). He has great control of expressions and body language, his characters often pulling funny and very human faces, but they ALL make the same distinct expressions. This vol gave him some opportunities to make some more monstrous designs, which were very cool, but even those all ended up looking the exact same. Sigh, just disappointed. Can I have the worldbuilding notes?
Illustrations are made even more gorgeous! I really love the designs for the monsters and the gods' divine forms (Raphaela and Aluria's were favorites holy shit such attention to detail) and the Parallels chapter was amazing even though there was a hint to what might happen featured in a panel prior to ending. My favorite thing about this series is the contradictions. We have cubi who desire love but can only bring pleasure and depravity, and yet they're the ones who seem to understand how equality works in relationships (both around equal consent and equal positions in the dynamic). On the other hand, we have the cupids who crave debauchery but can only bring affection and submission, and yet they're the ones who can't seem to grasp how a relationship works without blindly losing themselves to their significant other. The contradictory nature is what keeps this whole plot interesting. Lauren and Matthew's story is highly raw and relatable. I love how we have divine beings with purely human flaws and seeing how they move on and avoid their messy exes is truly entertaining to read.
This continues to surprise me because the plot really is THAT DEEP. I love how the style and substance are equally fulfilling and would love to have the next volume ASAP!
I really wanted to like this Volume more than I did. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed both previously released Fine Print volumes as well as all of Sunstone.
Vol. 3 unfortunately felt far too disjointed for me to be fully engaged with an ever growing list of characters. I wanted more of Lauren and the Cubi and less Gods vs underlings dynamics every other chapter.
I can see the vision and the setup for a grander arch with Sejic alluding to a 9 book story and ties with his wife’s Punderworld series focusing on Hades and Persephone, but this volume unfortunately fell into the trap of feeling like mostly setup with little payoff.
I’m still eager for future volumes and hopeful when pieces mesh together with those future entires I’ll be able to reflect back more fondly on this book. But at the moment, it’s a bit of a disappointment story wise.
At the very least, the art will pull you along to keep turning the page, even if it’s not all your cup of tea…or tentacle.
Happily, the time between volumes 2 and 3 was not as long 1 to 2. The author note says we're about 1/3 of the way through the story so let's hope the volumes come out a little faster. I really like this series. I love just about every character introduced. *Sigh* I suppose if I have to wait years for the next volume, that'd be okay.
I usually go back and re-read the whole series before I just dive in to the newest one published (since I read them in 1-2 days and wait a year for the next one to come out), but I didn't this time and I really regret that. I will definitely re-read the whole thing for book 4.
Another great volume I loved it! The plot thickens hehehe I like all the characters, I do hope Apollo's visions won’t happen and everybody lives and is happy with their SO! Fingers crossed!! XD
Okay but like... can these come out faster because I can't deal with these cliffhanger endings but I also don't have the self control to wait until the series is done?
Lauren Thomas, our resident human, continues her journey with the succubi. She journeys through this magical space and has to find a way to live her normal life along with her magical journey. I enjoy this weird trips through the real and magical worlds. I can’t wait for the next volume.
