As she runs from the horde, she's unceremoniously tackled by an infected and she's convinced it's the end.
Yet the infected doesn't rip her apart--it drags her to an abandoned home, instead.

Jordan has been infected for months with no hope of a cure. The virus rages like a beast in her, dragging her body around, making her see and do things no person should have to endure. She tries hiding in the recesses of her mind when she suddenly gains control of herself.
But the beast is not done lurking beneath the surface, whispering in her ear, urging her to kidnap this particular woman.

As Kate comes to and learns of Jordan's viral mutation, she grows determined to get back to the safe zone, confident it's the key to saving everyone. The two strike a Jordan will escort Kate to the safe zone, but she must come back with Jordan once the work is done, as the beast demands. The unlikely duo must survive hordes, raiders, and a cult in the mountains, all while trying to overcome their own demons. As they traverse the outskirts of the city, they find themselves leaning on one another and bonding in ways they didn't expect.

But in this world, happiness is fleeting.

This is a post-apocalyptic sapphic romance that blurs the line between science fiction and horror.

I have so many questions that I fear won’t be answered. Throughout the book there were so many parts I found super interesting, especially since this isn’t your typical “zombie” infection. I also found myself saying “what the fuck” multiple times because some parts were WEIRD.

This book reminds me of the movie Warm Bodies in a sense, where Jordan is infected yet able to control herself and saved Kate from death.

I keep having to remind myself I can’t think logically because it’s literally a work of fiction, but some things just didn’t make sense to me. I think the main reason I only have it a 3 star is because of the scenes that honestly kind of made me uncomfortable, but also because the ending felt rushed.

The ending was also very open ended, but I can handle that over feeling like information was missed. I will say, I’ve never read anything like this before so I have to give props.

I ate this book up! It had me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning.
This story follows Jordan and Kate as they try to navigate life after a deadly virus breaks out on the island.
The story has a lot of horror elements but it's also incredibly heartfelt.
Which is to be expected with G.E. Masters. Her stories are so fascinating and at times they can be heartbreaking. 🥹
Now, into the romance. Gosh, the chemistry between the two FMCs? Its insane! I seriously could not get enough of them! The unconditional loyalty and love between them was just everything to me.

10/10.

Phewwww this was a rollercoaster!! So intense and exciting, through the entire story! The main characters were perfect, their banter was so fun and so real! Watching Kate figure out how to maneuver through so much chaos as just a we lab rat was fun! The story line was amazing and honestly, one of my greatest fears of our world.

Thank you so much to GE Masters for sending me an ARC! I really enjoyed this one! I've read a lot of dystopian/post apocalyptic romances but I've never read a zombie romance before so I wasn't really sure how on earth this book would play out, but it was SO GOOD!

Definitely check the content warnings-things get pretty dark so make sure you're protecting your mental health.

I always love unconventional meet-cutes lololol Jordan kidnaps (sort of?) Kate because "the beast" aka the part of her infected with the virus, tells her to. She knows its wrong, but in a way she is not in control of her own body because of the virus. But also, a part of her doesn't want to let Kate go either. The poor woman is so conflicted.

Jordan is probably my favorite character just because she is sooo complex! She isn't like all the other infected. She is able to speak and make decisions (for the most part, sometimes the beast takes full control). Kate notes how she's warmer than other infected, and she's not as grotesque. She has gone through some traumatic things as an infected with no control of her body and has watched herself do awful things from inside her own mind. She spends a lot of the book healing and recovering from all the things that happened to her when she was first infected.

Kate definitely goes through it over the course of the book. She goes from being kidnapped to having steamy thoughts about her kidnapper 👀 😈 She is on a research team trying to figure out a cure for the virus and she is intrigued that Jordan seems to have a unique variant of the virus.

The ending honestly surprised me! It was great and they get their HEA but not in the way I was expecting!

I enjoyed reading Decay and Devour so much, by the time I realized it, I was done with the book and it left me wanting more.

I appreciated the new take on being infected, of them feeling trapped inside themselves watching their body be controlled by the virus, do unspeakable things and having to live with that. I always enjoy some negative tension between the main characters at the beginning only to fall head over heels later.

When Jordan confessed that “the beast” just wanted Kate not to infect or kill but to protect and that she recognized that “the beast” was a less inhibited and more impulsive extension of herself 🥵🥵🥵. I was so glad that Kate came into her own and learned to survive and fend for herself even while having Jordan near. The spicy scenes, which were quite a few, were VERY well written. As a yearner, I wish we could have seen more on how feelings developed between Jordan and Kate beyond physical attraction.

I’m still so curious to know more about the virus, the different mutations, the purpose behind targeting that specific island and what the big picture plans for the virus were, what happened with Helena and how will the journalist handle the information given. I’m going to wish really hard for a sequel or I’ll even settle for a novella.

Thank you to G.E. Masters for providing me with an eARC. I’m really looking forward to all of their future projects and reading their previous works.

Decay and Devour? More like this book devoured me!! God it was so good. Let me tell you, I am not a sci fi, post apocalyptic fan normally and zombies aren't my thing. BUT THIS WAS EVERYTHING!!

I swear I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I utterly adore Jordan and Kate, wow. Kate was fantastic, she truly was such an amazing character and believes in the work she is doing in the lab. When on a mission, she discovers or should I say *gets slammed* with a discovery about the virus and that discovery is our amazing Jordan. GAAAH Jordaaaaan, might be one of my new favourite FMCs. Jordan cannot understand why the virus made her want to kidnap this random woman, but now she has her she isn't letting her go.

Let me tell you, there's so much tension and chemistry!! There's so much wit in the exchanges between these two, I love their internal dialogue between interactions too. It's a wild ride as you follow both Jordan and Kate through the story as they face each challenge, including at times eachother and their internal conflicts throughout. It's such an emotional rollercoaster and because it's G Masters, it's written to perfection. These characters have so much depth and relatability to them, you just can't help but love them and want the absolute world for them. Not to mention, the spice 👀🥵 YES. Gah I just am in love.

The horror elements were super well done, at times it often felt eerie and almost like it could be too real and I love how descriptive each scene was. Honestly this might just be another one of my all time favourite reads of the whole of 2025. If your after a Sapphic horror sci-fi thriller with spice then this is absolutely for you, and it's just GAH perfection.

I won't say anymore because I don't want to spoil anything

Things I loved:
- Sapphic Romance (FF)
- Infected kidnapper and non infected captive
- So much tension
- Mental health rep including PTSD, anxiety and depression (note suicidal ideation)
- BLOOD CONSUMPTION, also CNC and dubcon

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️Open door and detailled, multiple scenes
Burn: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

“I always thought the infected were the monsters, but maybe I’m one too.” - Kate

“Decay and Devour” by G.E. Masters was deliciously thrilling! I honestly don’t think there’s a genre that G can’t write, and I’m totally obsessed with her work. I want to thank her for allowing me to be on her street team and giving me an advanced peek at this post-apocalyptic sapphic romance! All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own and are freely given.

“The self-hatred swirls around me over and over again, not letting up until it’s dug so deeply into me that I don’t even exist anymore.” - Kate

As stated above, “Decay and Devour” is a post-apocalyptic sapphic romance written in dual points of view that follows two main characters: Kate, an optimistic researcher working with a team to find a cure for the virus that has spread; and Jordan, one of the infected who somehow regained control over the beast within, yet still feels compelled to kidnap Kate.

“Want her, the beast snarls in my head. Want her, want her. All right, well, we have her now. The beast and I knew she’d never come willingly, so I had to knock her out.” - Jordan

Naturally, tension is high at first and Kate is terrified of Jordan. Eventually though, they make a deal: Jordan will bring Kate back to her safe zone to continue working on a cure, but once it’s found, Kate must return with Jordan. The journey is long and brutal. Along the way, they encounter other infected, merciless raiders, a religious cult in the mountains, and a shadow stalker (the most dangerous infected out there).

“No one is coming to save us. We’re on our own.” - Kate

On top of the physical threats, they also have to face their own inner demons. Though the journey is tough, they wind up working together, learning more about each other, and connecting in a way they never saw coming. Will they survive all that this world throws at them or will it tear them apart?

“I’ve ripped my chest open with my bare hands, fingernails digging into my flesh and bone to expose my broken core underneath.” - Jordan

In previous reviews of G’s work I’ve commented on her writing style and this book is no different. The writing is smooth and captivating, with every detail thoughtfully considered. I easily get lost in the story, joining the characters on their riveting journey. As usual, I look forward to more of her work!

Readers who love gripping dark romance with sapphic yearning, enemies-to-lovers tension, dystopian zombie chaos, flamethrowers, SPICE, and muscle mommies, will definitely enjoy “Decay and Devour”. Add this one to your TBR now! Expected release: spring 2026 (date TBD).

I enjoyed the premise of this book. As someone who came into their political self the same year they read 1984 and Fahrenheit 451, I absolutely love dystopian books especially where you find out the government are the bad guys.

I enjoyed how it wasn’t just infected and non-infected. There were cults, raiders, and monsters hiding throughout the zones in addition to infected and non-infected persons. This made the spectrum of morality much more realistic and nothing was black and white.

I liked the infected vs. non infected sapphic relationship and how they both helped each other change their outlooks on life, or rather come into their own and discover what they wanted out of life. Our FMCs were definitely the ones driving the plot as the traveling occurred especially.

The main thing that didn’t work as well for me was I felt a lot of the traveling was redundant. I love a travel/journey romance, but I felt like I was reading the same chapters over and over again just in a new location. This did lead me to skim bits in the last 15-20% of the book, but this is probably just a me thing!

Thank you to G.E. Masters for the eARC! The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.

Did I devour this book, or did this book devour me????

ARC REVIEW: 4.5⭐️ rounded up!

I’m no stranger to this author’s work, so going in I just knew it would be amazing!

I am a biiiiig zombie fan, movies/books/shows you name it… but throw in a forbidden & unconventional sapphic romance and I am SEATED! The chemistry between Kate and Jordan was pouring off the pages, and the slow burn build was *chefs kiss*. I loved the way trauma healing was handled between the two MCs, as to be expected by GE Masters. And the SPICE, my lawwwwwd THE SPICE! 🥵

While some zombie stories can feel redundant and unoriginal, this one showed up as a very different experience and perspective that I couldn’t get enough of. One of my favorite things about dystopian, fantasy, or horror books is getting into the lore of it all. I love seeing what the author comes up with and how they choose to create their story. GE Masters wrote an original take on something that tends to be overdone — and I can’t recommend it enough!

If you’re a fan of dystopian stories, with a drool worthy sapphic romance — Decay and Devour should be added to your TBR as soon as possible!

Let me start with how cool I think the virus is in this story!! Zombie stories are so oversaturated, so it’s so easy for it to get boring. I really like where it goes with “the beast”, and how it gives the reader a sense of a living force that is working behind the scenes, driving the zombies forward.

As for Jordan and Kate, I adore them. The spice was perfect, but I wasn’t surprised because this author writes super good scenes. I REALLY like how instinctive/possessive Jordan gets over Kate. It’s very romantic how the characters are able to address their emotions and trauma together; how both characters didn’t even realize how far gone they were until they had met each other.

I am very interested to see if there will be a follow up book, and if there is: I think it would be really cool to delve into the stories of the others who are like Jordan.

Bad ass women, instinct driven spice and a fucked up government. 10/10 I can’t wait to see if there are any changes for the preorder drop in June! (Just finished the ARC)

this book was an absolute whirlwind!

in a world full of infected and non infected humans, kate and jordan find themselves in an unlikely situation together. with no one but each other, they have to find their way back to a safe zone and what they go through along this journey gets crazier and crazier by the page!

i absolutely adored kate and jordan’s relationship and how everything panned out for them in the end. by no means was it conventional and that’s what made it so perfect.

from 70% on i was absolutely floored and clutching the edge of my seat for what was going to happen and the twist at the end was so out of left field i didn’t see it coming!

with the way this ended, i hope we get more from this world and find answers or solutions, but it was also a good ending if we don’t!

thank you so much to the author for the arc, i can’t wait for more from you!🖤

WOW, this book was packed with tension, intensity, thrill and pure heat when it came to the two main characters. A virus has taken over an island and the infected people have turned into zombies. Things take a turn with one of the main characters, Kate, while she is going on a mission and she is faced with an unbelievable discovery about the virus that she thought was impossible and it's an infected named Jordan. Jordan battles with the virus inside her and can't understand why Kate has become a main focus to her virus. The emotional rollercoaster you go through is wild but so worth it. Only G.E could make a book that makes you nervous and hot all at the same time. If you're looking for a horror thriller with sapphic spice that will leave you breathless? please DIVE into this book.

**Recieved as an ARC!**

This read was fun, frenetic, suspenseful, and incredibly satisfying. I am not usually a lover of the zombie trope, but Masters hooks you with her claws and keeps you there for this entire wild ride. The romance was sweet and even a bit longing, which I adored. The characters were believable and you could honestly level with them and their experiences if you ever found yourself in your own zombie apocalypse. All in all, fantastic read! Read it! Its awesome!

My second zombie/disease outbreak of the year (so far). I DNF’d “Let the Mask Fall”, so I wasn’t %100 sure that I’d like this one. I received the preorder yesterday and finished it today.

What I loved: I loved both MCs in this book. Both of them had depth and I enjoyed both POVS. I enjoyed their romance and intimacy as well.

What I didn’t love: I wanted more time to finish this book up. I desperately wanted to hear more about the world, their lives, etc. I felt like the ending was rushing us out the door. POSSIBLY to lead to another book? The ending was lack luster for me. Give us more, please 🙏🏻.

While the book is sad, it is also deeply romantic and sexy. I want to give this a 5 so badly but I’m just missing important parts for my liking.

Loved this arc, love GE Masters!

Love GE Masters writing which is simple, to the point and making you want more in the end

This book pulled at my heartstrings making me think of so many different media’s that are my fav when it comes to a good read. Jordan and Kate were like the perfect duo starting out with their differences but finding that they were similar in the end.

This Monster dystopian romance was just amazing and that ending really made me want more! I’m so curious if there will be something I’ll be waiting for with this plot 🥰

thank you G.E. Masters for the arc of this book!i really enjoyed this, it’s only the second apocalypse book ive read and i was not disappointed! i love the forced proximity of these when they are traveling together, and the different things they hit along the way (like the cult.. wow)
i loved the characters so much, the enemies to lovers type of start and the unlikely love between them was so sweet. i loved the hurt/comfort of this, and watching them grow closer and trust each other with their pasts was healing. they started to really understand each other and how unwilling they were to be without each other by the end was just 😭🤌🏼
the spice was great, and that’s all i’ll say about that to not spoil😅
i also loved the beast in jordan lol, it felt like a third character when she would start to argue with it😂
overall i really enjoyed this book, if you liked hearing red you would definitely like this!

Mom, pick me up I’m scared!!!

No, actually this horromance was somehow perfectly terrifying AND adorable? My heart was pounding for the majority of this book, either due to the spice or the suspense. I loved the learning about the virus, outbreak, and lore behind both the MC’s. I felt like I was living in this world, on the island with them.

Kate and Jordan are two of my all time favorite characters at this point! They were both extremely relatable in their insecurities. The trauma they endured and lived with is never diminished and is properly shown through their emotions and dialogue, something I really appreciate in apocalyptic books.

I saw the book coming to an end but I didn’t want it to!! Begging for a spin off from G.E.

10/10 book!!

This is an angsty post-apocalyptic romance set on an island five years after an outbreak that turns people into zombies. Kate is part of a team searching for a cure, but one day she volunteers to patrol the safe zone. When things go wrong, she’s attacked by an infected, who, instead of killing her, takes her somewhere safe.

That infected is Jordan: someone who turned months ago and has been fighting to regain control from the “beast” (as she calls the virus) inside her. But the voice in her head isn’t done with her… and it wants Kate.

What follows is a tense, emotional journey where a reluctant bargain turns into something deeper as they face hordes, raiders, and even a cult. In a world like this, survival isn’t the only challenge. Trust, humanity, and connection are just as fragile.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I really enjoyed it and never felt bored; the pacing keeps things moving, and there’s always something happening. It pulled me in easily, even if I sometimes wished the atmosphere felt a bit more immersive and eerie. The world is dangerous and intense, but I didn’t always feel fully grounded in it.

There were aspects of the characters I really enjoyed and others I struggled with. Kate initially came across as the typical sheltered girl who doesn’t quite know how to survive on her own, and without Jordan’s help, I’m not sure she would have. I appreciated how she gradually becomes stronger and more aware of what survival truly means. However, it took quite a while to get there, and at times she felt more dependent than I would’ve liked. That said, I really loved her emotional core. Her hope, empathy, and refusal to lose her humanity stood out in such a bleak setting. She often brought a sense of lightness when things became heavy. I just wish we had seen more of her independence and her role in the cure.

Jordan, on the other hand, was easily my favorite character. I loved watching her internal struggle while living with the “beast” and how she slowly regained her sense of self. The duality between her human conscience and the virus was fascinating, and it felt like a fresh take on zombies that I haven’t seen much in this genre. I also appreciated her grounded, realistic outlook; even when it leaned toward pessimism, it felt completely justified given everything she had gone through. Her resilience stood out, especially in how she confronted her past and kept moving forward. I loved how Kate helped her rediscover her sense of worth, and how protective and courageous she was, always willing to put herself on the line.

The romance between Kate and Jordan was full of tension and chemistry. At first, their connection felt more like infatuation, but as they got to know each other, it evolved into something deeper and more intimate. That’s why I found myself a bit disappointed when that emotional progression seemed to pause in favor of more physical moments. While I’m not against those scenes, as they were well-written, I would have loved to see more of the vulnerability and emotional openness we were starting to get. At times, it felt like they leaned on physical connection instead of fully confronting their fears and trauma. Exploring that balance more could have made their bond even stronger.

One of my favorite aspects was the exploration of morality and humanity. The story does a great job showing how blurred those lines can become in extreme circumstances, and the idea that the infected’s humanity might not be gone—just dormant—was particularly intriguing through Jordan’s perspective. The different views on the virus, especially from the cult, added an extra layer of depth. These elements brought a lot of richness to the story, and I only wish we had gotten even more of them.

I do wish we had received more concrete answers about the virus itself. There are hints about mutations and its origins, but just as things get interesting, we’re left with more questions than clarity… which was a little frustrating.

Overall, Decay and Devour is a fast-paced, high-stakes story with compelling characters, a unique romance, and thought-provoking themes about what it means to be human. It’s definitely an engaging read, even if it left me wanting just a little bit more.

Huge thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was gritty, emotional, and way more tender than I expected from a zombie apocalypse story—and I mean that in the best possible way.

I went in thinking I’d get survival horror (and don’t get me wrong—you absolutely do), but what really stood out was the humanity threaded through all the chaos. Five years into the outbreak, everything feels worn down and desperate, and the story captures that exhaustion so well.

Kate and Jordan were such an unexpected but perfect pairing. Kate starts off driven almost entirely by hope and purpose—clinging to the idea that she can fix everything—while Jordan is… the complete opposite. Torn apart from the inside out, fighting a losing battle against something that’s literally consuming her. Their dynamic is tense right from the start (I mean… kidnapping by an infected is not exactly a meet-cute 😅), but it evolves in such a compelling way.

Jordan, especially, was fascinating. The internal fight between her and the “beast” added this constant edge of danger that never really lets you relax. Even in the quieter moments, there’s always that lingering question of when things might turn. It made every bit of connection between them feel fragile and precious.

The romance itself is slow, messy, and built under extreme circumstances—which made it feel very real. There’s a reluctant trust that grows into something deeper, and I loved how it wasn’t instant or easy. It felt earned, especially with everything stacked against them.

Plot-wise, there’s a lot going on—hordes, raiders, a cult (which added such a creepy layer)—and it keeps the pacing moving well. The world feels dangerous and unpredictable, and I appreciated that the story doesn’t shy away from showing how brutal survival can be.

Overall, this was a great blend of horror, sci-fi, and sapphic romance with a strong emotional core. It’s bleak, intense, but still manages to carve out these small, meaningful moments of connection that hit hard.

Highly recommend if you love:

post-apocalyptic settings with real emotional weight
monster/“infected but still human” dynamics
slow-burn sapphic romance under pressure
high stakes + constant underlying tension

And that ending? Yeah… I’m going to be thinking about this one for a while.

I truly didn’t know how a romance between an infected (zombie) and a human was going to work… and then G.E. Masters did that. These characters you will lose your hearts and minds over. Jordan is something special and watching Kate fall for her was one of the best things I have read.

🔥 MOMENTS I’M STILL THINKING ABOUT
What am I not thinking about? This story starts with such a a great concept and then it just keeps escalating. Layer after layer, tension on tension, until everything explodes in the BEST way. I was obsessed the entire time. No breaks. No recovery.

⚠️ ONE SMALL NOTE
Actually… not small.
Be prepared to fall so deeply in love with these two that you come out of this book a different person. There is no going back.

📚 READ THIS IF YOU LOVE…
Sapphic romance • Feral, all-consuming love • Captor/captive with a twist • “I would burn the world for you” energy • Dystopian settings • Zombies & survival

ARC REVIEW
Duel 1st Person POV. 5🌟 4🌶️. 289 pages
7.5 Spicy Scenes

Decay and Devour a book aptly named as I did indeed devour it in one sitting. I physically could not tear myself away from this book! I knew after the first chapter that this would 100% be a 5🌟 read and a book that I would most likely come back to over and over again!

Kate is a researcher in safe zone two working on a vaccine/cure for the virus that took hold of the island she called home five years prior. After both her parents and brother were infected, the only thing Kate has left is hope. Until she is literally kidnapped and held hostage by a lucid infected. Jordan and her “beast” become obsessed with Kate and are determined to keep her. The story follows the two on a journey of terror, bloodshed and a shared obsession with one another, as they travel back to the safe zone!

Everything and I mean EVERYTHING about his book is phenomenal, something I have come to expect from G.E Masters! The world building and description of the infected is out of this world. The dynamic and continuous banter between Kate and Jordan is excellently executed and you can truly feel their connection leaping of the page and the spice, Jesus 🥵.

This book had me laughing, it had me mentally screaming at my kindle, it had me cautiously checking my bedroom door at 3am incase I was about to be eaten and it completely swept me away.

Decay and Devour will be released Spring 2026. Do yourself a favour and devour it like I did when you have the chance!

Holy sapphic zombie apocalypse!! I absolutely DEVOURED this. Obsessed. Love it. Can’t even make brain words write good things. I’ve just finished it and immediately need to tell everyone it’s EXACTLY what I’ve been waiting for.
An infected, muscle mommy captor with a non-infected, scientist captive? A long journey to get back to the safe zone, infested with hordes and raiders? Tied to a bed? Spice, horror and romance? A FLAMETHROWER? All the yes. I loved every page and couldn’t put it down.
The trade-off between Jordan and The Beast was really captivating to read, and I’m a sucker for the primal ‘mine’ vibes so ate ALL of this up. Also the backstories for Jordan and Kate definitely tug on the heart strings.

Plot summary
Dystopian, post zombie outbreak world with infected, raiders, ‘safe’ zones, and just trying to survive. Kate is helping to work on a vaccine/cure, and heads out to check the perimeter. Unfortunately things go a bit wrong and she ends up running for her life and getting kidnapped by someone. That someone turns out to be Jordan, the first infected known who can still talk and control themselves (mostly). She also happens to be an absolute muscle mommy with The Beast directing her from the inside…

Things I loved:
- Jordan and ‘The Beast’
- Kidnapping with no idea what to do with her next
- Last of Us vibes
- The spice
- Cult in the mountains
- The flamethrower
- The chemistry!
- The brother
- Revenge on the raiders
- Getting the truth out there ending

Overall, a gripping, sapphic dystopian horror/romance with a sexy muscle mommy infected, and a red haired scientist non-infected. LOVE!

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

I went into Decay and Devour with very high expectations, and honestly, G.E. Masters delivered once again. I've read her Deal With the Devil Duet, and absolutely loved it, so this quickly became one of my most anticipated reads of 2026. When I finally received the ARC, I don't think I've ever started reading a book more quickly.

From the very beginning, I was hooked. The chapters are short, and they created that "just one more chapter" spiral. Before I even realised it, I was already 40% into the book in my first sitting. It's the kind of pacing that completely consumes you without feeling overwhelming.

One thing I really appreciated is how Masters builds tension. She doesn't rely heavily on gore or excessive horror to create unease. Instead, her writing itself carries this constant sense of dread. Every chapter left me bracing, convinced this was the moment something terrible would happen. That quiet, creeping tension kept me on edge the entire time.

The concept of the story felt genuinely unique, which is getting harder to find in this genre. It stood out not just because of the premise, but because of how it was executed: with restraint, atmosphere, and emotional depth. By the end, I was completely attached to both main characters. I was rooting for them so hard, feeling every bit of their fear, hope, and desperation.

Overall, this was everything I hoped it would be. It reminded me exactly why I fell in love with Master's writing in the first place. Now I'm just one book away from completing her entire backlist.

4 Stars

Positives

* The virus being sentient inside the infected human was a nice touch that lifted the zombie game and differentiated this story from the hundreds of zombie stories.
* The setting was another good move by the author. Isolating the ordeal to an island and having the survivors feel the abandonment from the outside world adds a layer of hopelessness to their situation.
* I really liked how the main characters’ relationship evolved even though it wasn’t the healthiest. Yes, a few scenes felt morally questionable but I got swept up, weirdly, the sentient virus being a driving factor allowed/excused the feral behaviour which my logical brain knows is wrong but my amygdala overrode my prefrontal cortex. Sometimes feral is hot I guess? In a base, animalistic sort of way. But obvs only women. Try flipping the character to a man and it’s game over for me.
* The author discussing suicidal ideation was spot on! It was as if reading my soul right there. That was very good. Heartfelt. 10/10.
* The zombie’s physical transformation for me was giving mindless vampire that doesn’t just drink the victim’s blood but eats flesh too. That was a great distinction for this book’s zombie. I was fascinated by the different take.

Not So Positive

* The scientific side of the cure/vaccine was not specific enough. It was very much just words and conjectures about a vaccine. Even if it was just the simplest scientific idea that could allude as to HOW a vaccine/cure could be derived from was not mentioned. Which is why that part of the story felt weak for me.
* There are a few inconsistencies that are minor. Like for example, playing the piano in a post apocalyptic time would definitely be heard from a distance especially because there’s no noise pollution. Another one is making fires for warmth/cooking game when they hunker down in a random house - again, smoke could be seen from afar. Just simple things like that.

The last of us vibes but with a sappich twist!

The chapters are so short that you'll keep repeating yourself “just one more chapter” until you realize you've read more than half the book in just one afternoon.

I love Jordan, she is like a doberman - at first she seems big and scary with her bad reputation but then in reality she's intensely loyal, affectionate, protective and has the heart of a golden retriever.

Here's some of the tropes you'll find:
-Touch her and die
-Forced Proximity
-Kinda slow burn
-Dystopian
-Hurt / Comfort
-Found Family
-No third act break up
-Muscle Mommy
-Possessive & protective MC
-Infected kidnapper × non infection prisoner
-PTSD & mental health rep
-Face sitting & scissoring
-Penetration with a gun

Considering it's set in the post-zombie apocalypse you need to be prepared for some dark themes therefore I recommend you read the CW first.

CW:a post-apocalyptic world with a corrupt government -epidemic and discussion of vaccines -murder -gore -violence -weapons (guns, bow and arrows, and grenades) -a Christian fundamentalist cult-death of loved ones -grief, PTSD, anxiety, and depression -suicidal ideation -suicide attempts (not on page or descriptive, but discussed) -death of an animal (rabbits and a bear specifically, not descriptive) -blood consumption -non-sexual biting

I love a good sapphic romance. Especially set in a post-apocalyptic world where their love would be considered forbidden.

Decay and Devour was an incredible, slow burn, dystopian romance, where a zombie virus ravaged an isolated island 5 years ago and has left few survivors. There are safe zones, raider areas, infected zones, and the mountains. There was once a rumor that a cult had left the safe zones and made their way up the mountain for salvation, but no one can say whether it really happened.

Kate had just finished college when the infection was spreading, and was rounded up to help work on a cure for it. For the last 5 years, she has worked closely with a small team towards finding a cure or treatment for the infected. Kate has chosen to go on a perimeter run with another survivor to get a better idea of what’s going on outside the zone. She ends up with more than she bargained for, getting kidnapped by an (albeit quite attractive) infected.

Jordan is infected. She was bit 6 months ago and died…or so she thought. She semi-recently “woke up” in a cave in the mountains, surrounded by other infected. She seemed to be the only conscious one and made her escape. She’s been “living” (if you could call it that) alone ever since. Until she spies one gorgeous, redheaded woman and her infected side starts speaking to her and saying to “keep” this woman…she kidnaps her.

Jordans “beast” side isn’t telling her to turn Kate, it almost seems…affectionate towards her? It practically purrs anytime she’s near. What the hell is going on??

I fell in love with the characters so easily, and it was so easy to understand their motivations as well. Kate and Jordan each have their own respective baggage, and even though the romance is severely slow burn, it still felt authentic. I loved the plot twists, as they were perfectly timed.

This was an overall 5 star for me. The sense of shame, grief, and dread were palpable on the page. This definitely felt like a post-apocalyptic dystopian read, and I loved every second of it.

4.5 ⭐️3.5🌶

I absolutely loved this book. Zombies can be a bit tricky as a subject matter. The virus origin is usually due to a mutation or man made creation. They can be slow and lumbering or fast, or even super fast (hive mind). Is the virus linked to only humans? What methods can spread it? What kills the zombie? The options are many but so can be the pitfalls when crafting a truly unique take.

This tale isn't as big on the horror aspect but it's still there, looming around every corner, just waiting to pounce. Kate and Jordan's interactions slowly lure you into this dystopian island that they're caught on. The race for a cure and Kate's eventual captivity by Jordan who's slowly evolving into a new zombie threat is expertly done. The ever present threat not just from zombie hordes, but the living as well is an added danger to them both.

I loved the interactions, the world building, creatures, and especially the ending. I hope we get more of them in the future.

Tropes and triggers: kidnapping, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, found family, religious fanatics, touch her and die, one bed

I was given an advanced copy for an honest review.
