Olaf’s Continuing Struggles
The story follows Olaf, and his wife Ingrid, Lindquist, Norwegian immigrants who moved to Minnesota in 1982 and settled into a small house on Summit Avenue after having their daughter Astrid in 1983. Olaf works at a Ford plant and struggles to understand American social customs, finding them bewilderingly complex when compared to the straightforward neighbor relationships he knew in Bergen. He seeks understanding and tries to make the rules clear and simple but grapples with everyday uncertainties like whether he should help his elderly neighbor Dorothy Patterson shovel snow. When he finally introduces himself, properly, he discovers that Dorothy is just as uncertain about the social rules as he is, which helps him realize that being American might be about everyone figuring out how to live together rather than trying to follow a non-existent predetermined manual.
He tries to cope with the wild fluctuations in Minnesota weather .. Bergen's maritime climate kept temperatures moderate year-round, Minnesota's continental weather swings violently between minus-thirty winters and ninety-five-degree summers, with the added threat of tornadoes.
And that is just a typical day or two for Olaf.
