Exodus: Propulsive Dystopian Prequel to Glassborn

Rate this book
In 2081, Earth is dying faster than anyone predicted.

After floods destroy her veterinary practice, Lira accepts a one-way mission to VossColony – humanity’s last hope for survival. She’s tasked with raising Mars’ first rabbits, bred for meat, fur and comfort on a hostile planet.

From liftoff, her mission partner, Uchenna, seems… off. The woman Lira trained with was rigid and meticulous. Now she’s cracking jokes, skipping protocols, and forgetting things she shouldn’t.

Something’s wrong with the rabbit program – and it’s already bound for Mars.

Exodus is a propulsive dystopian prequel to Glassborn for fans of the class warfare in Red Rising, the systemic horror of The Handmaid's Tale, and the claustrophobic setting of Wool.

I’m a dystopian fiction fan, author, and firm believer that the best books in this genre are about hope and righting wrongs, and maybe also a how-to manual for rebellion.

I cut my teeth on the classics – 1984, Brave New World – when kids my age were reading Goosebumps. One of my all-time favorites is Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde and when book 2 came out 15 years later, I wasn’t even mad at the wait. That mix of absurdity, darkness, and razor-sharp worldbuilding is what I aspire to in my own writing.

I’m fascinated by “what ifs” that spiral outward and reshape entire worlds, like the works of Neal Shusterman and Hugh Howey. That’s the kind of experience I chase as a reader and as a writer.

Hey there, book lovers! It’s your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I am looking at KN Tirstian’s Exodus. I have coffee in my system and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!

Okay, let’s address the elephant in the room…the length. Thirty-two pages, and that is it. I do not know if the intention was to give the reader a taste of what is to come because a deadline was blown, or if it was intentional to just release it like this to see if there was interest in the project. Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining, especially since the price is not one red penny. You really cannot knock it that much since it is free, right?

There is a colony on Mars (that right there got my attention), and Lira is tasked with taking rabbits to the red planet. Yes, rabbits. It just so happens that you can get a lot out of a rabbit, from wool to meat, and they are surprisingly low-maintenance. She has a partner who is a very “follow the rules or else” kind of person. On the trip up, Lira notices some changes in her partner that are very concerning. Can it be a case of space anxiety? Or is it something more sinister?

This is a fast read, like you are done right when you get into the groove, and you are wondering what happens next. So, for a selling point for the first book, it is a stroke of genius. For the record, I did get the first full volume in the series, Glassborn. Yes, it did its job and hooked me. I want to see where this goes next.

The characters are well thought out and engaging. The story has an interesting hook that makes you want to see more. The pace is consistent throughout. As good as it is, this book ends up being an appetizer, and it could have easily fit as a prologue in the first book. But, since it is free, I really cannot complain much.

This one is great for fans of space travel, Mars, and rabbits.

I give it 4 bookmarks out of 5!

This was a fun, quick prologue to Glassborn, which I'm reading next. I'd already been set to read Glassborn, actually, when I signed up for the author's newsletter to get Exodus (I think that's how I got it?). Anyway, I love how it sets up the premise of humans living on a Mars colony because Earth is slowly becoming inhabitable. So many books start off with "humans are now living on Mars" but fail to describe much or any of how they got there! The set-up is interesting - robots constructing the habitats, rabbits for their wool and food - and I cannot wait to read Glassborn!

Also, we're set up with the fact that Lira and Ada are in the midst of a dystopian society... because something is really wrong on the Mars colony, which Ada is investigating. The suspense is building, and I care enough about Lira and Ada to follow their journey on Mars....

This prequel novella is a great introduction to the Glassborn Chronicles by KN Tristan.

Though I don’t know how the story is going to unfold, this short story tells the tale of the mission to Mars, and the rabbits that are being taken there and how things start to go awry.

I found this little novella to be very entertaining and it definitely was enough to get me interested in continuing the series.

I read the prequel first to see if the concept and series grabbed my attention, and it did from the start. The writing is great, the characters and concept compelling, and I can't wait to read Glassborn and learn more about the colony on Mars.
