Can a stuttering wizard become the hero of legend?Marvin is a wizard… kind of.
He’s got magic, a glowing horn, and a scroll of Fireball he’s too nervous to use. He also stutters when he's scared, trips over his own cloak, and never expected to be chosen for anything legendary.
But when a shattered crown from an ancient hero starts glowing in his presence, Marvin’s quiet life turns upside down. With danger rising and forgotten enemies awakening, Marvin must team up with a grumpy orc warrior, a clever tinker with a thing for smoke bombs, and a poet who can’t stop talking (or singing). Together, they must unlock the secrets of the crown before the darkness swallows their world.

I found myself completely invested in this unlikely crew of outsiders, especially the protagonist, who navigates both a stutter and the central mystery with equal determination. The narrative weaves together personal growth and adventure in a way that never feels forced. What resonated most was how the story celebrates differences—each character's unique qualities become essential to the group's success rather than obstacles to overcome. The pacing kept me engaged throughout, with tension building naturally toward each revelation. The vivid descriptions of the challenges faced by these friends had me holding my breath more than once. This book deserves a place on any young reader's shelf! My only complaint is the use of AI images for the interior artwork, its a mismosh of different art styles thats a bit distracting.
I had so much fun reading this story. I enjoyed the characters. They were very engaging. Their adventures were a little spooky and I was happy to join them on their quests. Mr Kimak did a great job on this book.
Adventure with Marvin the Stuttering Wizard and his ragtag group if friends. In this magical coming of age story, Marvin must mastery his wizarding skills with the help of his friends Trixie, a cute little gremlin, Brugo, an orc and master chef, and Flynn Thistledown, a half-elf dripping with charm. The dialogue in this story is witty and the character dynamics are absolutely perfect for this little adventure. This middle grade fantasy will most certainly delight readers of all ages.
Marvin the Stuttering Wizard is a magical story about an unlikely hero who must overcome stuttering and lack of confidence to save his world. The story focuses on courage and friendship. It is a funny fantasy adventure that I enjoyed. I will be passing this book on to my grandchildren.
This book is for anyone who likes a good adventure, or for a child who strugglings with knowing who they are, or for a parent - who loves D&D and is looking to share that love of storytelling with their child. This was not what I expected. From the description and picture, I thought it was more of a picture book for younger kids. But this is more for middle school to teen kids. You could absolutely read it with a younger child, but it would take them a while to finish on their own. Fun,lighthearted, and meaningful, this book embodies everything a story is meant to. Heros at their best. Highly recommended.
Marvin, our hero, struggles not only with stuttering but with self worth and knowing who he is - something all children (and some adults) struggle with. It's a story everyone can relate to, with lots of action and magic. My favorite part of the story though, was the humor Kimak wove into all the dialogue. From the moment Trixie mentions the "unfortunate incident with the dryad tea party" all the way until Flynn tells the story of "the time I impersonated a lich and got us out of a crypt full of cursed penguins", Kimak keeps the reader entertained and laughing. These lovable characters and ones you can get behind. They are real and endearing, and will worm their way into your child's heart.
I really enjoyed this book and found myself flying through it. I highly recommend it for anyone who has a child who struggles with wanting to read and needs a little more to stay captivated, or a parent, wanting to read something to their kids that's D&D related. If I had known about this book when my kids were younger, I would definitely have added it to their homeschooling curriculum.
This is a great book with so much going for it. It’s a good introduction to fantasy and reads much like a Dungeons and Dragons campaign in that the characters do ridiculous things and are put in goofy situations. In fact, I’m pretty sure the characters are a glamour bard, an artificer, a barbarian, and a wild magic sorcerer. The nice thing is that there’s nothing dirty here. It would be a great introduction for upper elementary kids and beyond into fantasy and enjoyable read for everyone else. The only thing remotely objectionable would be fantasy violence-monster attacks and deaths. There is a sequel to it as well, but I haven’t gotten to that one…yet.
Now, for the one drawback that I’ll warn you about. I listened to the audio version of the book, and it has an AI reader. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not a “never AI” person. I don’t begrudge the author one bit for turning to an AI reader if that’s what he was able to afford. It also makes his books more accessible to those who need to use such features, and made it possible for me to listen while I drove back and forth to work. The problem is that AI readers aren’t quite that good yet, and make odd choices in phrasing that sometimes need to be rehashed in your head for better phrasing. The other thing was actually pretty funny. Marvin has a stutter, which I think is fantastic to have included in the story. However, r-r-run didn’t come out that way. It was are are run. It really caught me off guard when the characters were excited for a slice of p-p-pie.
Overall, this is very enjoyable story, and I think it’s accessible for younger kids on up. However, unless you have a specific reason to go for the audiobook, I’d recommend a physical copy of this one.
