In your face kidnapping story with unexpected reversals at every step - 5 stars
The story starts when the Vice President of the United States is kidnapped and her selective service detail cannot be found. The good guys are not what they seem, and the bad guys are ruthless. There is a lot of street talk by the bro generation. The Veep is give an injection and comes to in a quiet, unheated room. One can only hope that she can be rescued. Initially I found the dialog to be off-putting and difficult to follow but it grew on me. There is offbeat humor and a ton of puns and double entendres.
The President of the United States calls upon a person outside the government three letter agencies, Severin Force (the "Force" in the title) asking for his unique brand of help. Force gets work right away doing exercises in the airplane that is taking him to Washington DC. Force is an extreme fitness devotee.
As the people who have taken the Veep dance around unlikely hideouts and reset their plans, Force seems to think that an anarchist organization is pulling the strings. A long term legislator seems to know (or guess) the basics of the extraction.
The plot includes costumed abductors, no ransom notes, and many tricks to turn well paid security professionals to forget about their responsibilities. The distractions are hilarious. Force hopes to solve the problem in under 12 hours, given that the Veep is not murdered. Force has a pair of ex-military guys who are gifted hackers and maintain their physics fitness to extremely high levels. The bent Secret Agents who were supposed to protect the Vice President also have extremely fit ex-soldiers on their team.
Immediately we realize that the people in high places are not to be trusted - you won't be surprised that money shouts. Force is not bothered by having to write reports or to have teams of lawyers vet his actions, he makes his decisions quickly. Surprise attacks, traps and general mayhem keep the excitement up without cluing the reader about who, if anyone, is really in charge. Houses are ransacked and nearly successful captures are key to the action. One of the good guys is extremely effective using sharp knives to try to get people to talk.
Rest assured, you will appreciate the conundrum when the President has to go for unplanned surgery which having a chain of command clearly defined. The twenty fifth amendment to the constitution, cutting back on government spending and gnashing of teeth of the state of the government is fair game for the wrap up. I encourage you to read this book.
