Can love blossom between a woman haunted by her family's past and a man haunted by the trauma of war?

Cora Scott is determined to hold onto her family's Texas ranch and provide a stable home for her young half brother, Charlie, despite the mounting challenges of post-Civil War frontier life. But when a scheming creditor threatens to seize their land, she must accept help from Ben McKenzie, a former Yankee soldier sent by her late brother. Though Ben's generosity and strength draw her, the man's private struggle she stumbles upon—too reminiscent of her father's alcoholism—makes her question whether she can trust her heart to him.

Ben McKenzie arrives in Texas intent on fulfilling his promise to his dying friend to protect Cora and Charlie. While using his inheritance to save their ranch, he battles not only the loss of their cattle but also his dependency on laudanum—a medicine that turned into a curse after his imprisonment at Andersonville. As his feelings for Cora deepen, he must choose between his promise to his father to take over their Philadelphia newspaper and his growing dream of a life with Cora in Texas.

When a Comanche warrior begins courting Cora and Ben's responsibilities in Philadelphia threaten to tear them apart, they must decide if their love is strong enough to overcome their fears and forge a future together on the Texas frontier.

I absolutely LOVE this series. I love the characters and the author’s way of expressing herself. Her stories have a beautiful flow to them.

Where books 1 and 2 featured each of the Logan sisters, book 3 features Cora Scott, a widow struggling to care for her 300-acre ranch while raising her half-brother. The Logan sisters do make a cameo appearance, though! It was good to catch up on their lives.

“Cora seemed to have lost her skip long ago, buried beneath an avalanche of hardship that a shovel couldn’t penetrate.”

This sequel examines the promises we make and the cost of keeping them, the assurance that love will overcome, and the risk involved in opening our hearts to love.

Captain Benjamin McKenzie is a recently released POW dealing with addiction and is not sure he wants to fulfill his promise made before he left to join the cavalry of the Northern Army, nor live with his father’s expectations. While his friend was dying in prison, Ben promised Jeb that he’d check in on his sister, Cora. He discovers that love is risky, but so is making the right choices and becoming accountable.

“Why had the Lord put such an amazing woman in his life and left every door to their future shut?”

I can’t imagine the hardship of cattle drives and surviving with little income on such a large ranch. It was eye-opening reading about the ‘things’ that enslaved Ben. I cheered him on to break the chains.

If you love historical fiction, this series is one you'll want to check out!

I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.

If you’re a fan of Christian Historical Fiction, you’ll love this book too!! I immediately fell in love with the characters of Cora Scott and Ben McKenzie! They both are relatable with struggles, emotions, and character growth. The post- Civil War frontier is the perfect setting for their story. Both of them can be a little stubborn at times but ultimately learn to overcome their faults.

This book contains a character dealing with addiction, descriptions of raids from Indian tribes, descriptions of deadly and desolate war prisons, loss of family members, and a whole lot of hope!

There were a few plot lines that I wish had been fleshed out more, but only because I wanted more of Ben and Cora growing in their character!! I can’t wait to pick up my next Sherry Shindelar novel!

I really wasn't sure how much I'd like the book although it sounded great. It's just that I have a harder time losing myself in books of this genre (romance). However, once I opened the book and started reading the first sentence I was hooked! I didn't want to put it down.

Sherry Deals with the real physical and psychological issues pertaining to addiction in this book. Ben is addicted to Laudum he first received while in Andersonville prison during the war.

Determined to break the hold Laudum has on him and keep his promise to his late friend, he leaves behind family and friends to go to Texas to fulfill his promise to help his late friend's sister with the family's ranch.

Everyday he fights the demon of the pull of Laudum while praying for the strength to resist the urge for even the smallest drop. He goes through pain, mental anguish, nausea, physical and psychological exhaustion. He has extreme temperature changes from sweating to shivering, cramping, while his mind tells him just one swallow just one. He fights it hundreds of times a day. He resists the urge to stop at the Druggist to buy some as his body and mind scream for relief telling him it'll be fine once he takes his "medicine."

Addiction is very real. Until this book I never knew what Laudum contained. It is a combination of alcohol and opium. Yep that's right the number one addiction issue today, the Opioid Epidemic. I have just discovered that Laudum is still available today, but it is regulated under the 2nd strictest category for a Controlled Substance in the US.

In Ben's day it was readily available without a prescription. It was widely used for pain control and as a cough suppressant.

You ask why the history of Laudum? I'll tell you. It's because of its extreme susceptibility to addiction.

Is that all the book is about? Absolutely not, but it plays a very significant role in why Cora (Jeb, who was Ben's late friend's sister) is unwilling to let Ben stick around to help with the ranch. Her father was an alcoholic and she watched him struggle with a gambling addiction and then alcoholism all her life. She doesn't trust Ben to kick his Laudum addiction just as her father never kicked his leading to his death. She doesn't want that influence around Charlie, her young half brother.

Ben left an "almost finance" as he calls her back home in Philadelphia where he is expected to return and take over his father's prosperous newspaper business and marry Olivia his "almost finance."

Ben is determined to keep his word to Jeb. Will Cora give him the chance to stay and help or will she demand he leave due to his addiction that he is determined to beat? Can she see he isn't like her father was? Can Ben open his heart to love and not just desire after the horrors of war and Andersonville before he loses his only chance at it?

If you want to know more about the very real struggles of addiction and see if Ben and Cora will open themselves up to true love based on a strong faith in God, then I highly suggest you read Texas Reclaimed by Sherry Shindelar. I honestly loved this book! Sherry knows how to not only capture a reader's attention, but how to hold it!

Texas Reclaimed is the first book I have read written by Sherry Shindelar. It is the third book in the Lone Star Redemption series, although it can be read as a standalone. However, it appears that characters from previous stories are featured in this one, but I did not feel like I missed anything. If you love Christian historical fiction with a Western vibe, this is the story for you.

Cora has a lot of responsibilities after the death of her parents and brother. Left to raise her half-brother alone. They live outside of town, where they have to look out for Comanche raids and outlaws.
Ben has come as a promise to his friend to protect his sister Cora. The civil war has left Ben in quite a mess, struggling with laudanum addiction. He must lean into God to get him through this. Though not without struggle and doubt.

Cora and Ben find themselves working together to try to save the ranch. They must overcome different obstacles and push on.

This romance was kisses only and perfect.
Sherry Shindelar did a great job intertwining faith throughout the story.

Ben McKenzie survives incarceration at Andersonville, and his return home should have been cause for celebration. But the ordeal left him addicted to laudanum, and he’s struggling to break free. And he’s not breaking his betrothal, but he’s putting off announcing it. He’s compelled by a sense of duty to his friend, Jeb Scott, to go from Philadelphia to Texas to check on the welfare of Jeb’s sister, Cora.

After her father succumbed to the ravages of alcoholism, Cora Scott is alone with her half-brother, Charlie, trying to hold onto the family ranch. When she learns her father put the ranch up as stakes for a gambling debt, Cora fears she’ll lose everything. Ben McKenzie’s arrival seems like a godsend. But can Cora trust that addiction won’t overwhelm Ben like it did her father?

I love love love Sherry Shindelar’s books! This is the third in the Lone Star Redemption series, and it’s so very good. Cora and Ben both wrestle with not letting their past wreck a possible future between them. Both are determined to save the ranch and do right by Charlie. They’re stubborn, but not unreasonable.

Shindelar deals with addiction realistically. Ben is drawn to laudanum, and it’s a real battle for him not to give in to its promise of relief from pain and stress. Cora wants to believe the best of Ben, wants to trust that he’s strong enough to stay clean. But the “what ifs” try to creep in, and when Ben has to return to Pennsylvania for family matters, they part on a painful note.

Characters from other books in the series make an appearance here. I just love the interactions between Little Star (Sky and Garret’s daughter from Texas Forsaken) and Charlie! I’d love to read their story down the road.

The historical details are engaging, and the growing romance between Ben and Cora is clean, no more than kisses, but oh, those kisses! Faith is woven gently throughout as each of them wrestle with what the Lord may have planned and rely on Him for guidance. And the tension that swirls around both the survival of the ranch and the future for Cora and Ben is compelling.

Highly recommended for anyone who likes good historical fiction, characters who trust in God, and romance that’s got a little sweet heat but isn’t spicy. Sherry Shindelar is now one of my favorite authors! Five stars for Texas Reclaimed.

Ben must keep a promise to the man that saved his life. While noble, what he doesn’t expect is this adventure changing everything. From the first meeting the fiery back and forth between Cora and Ben shows the passion that each character possesses and what at first starts off as ire turns into something so precious and tender that it captures both of them before either of them truly grasps what is occurring.

My husband and I are currently looking at land in Parker County, TX, for our forever home, so when I saw this area is the main setting for this story, I perked up. The tidbits of historical facts sprinkled throughout the story were wonderful, and to walk where this story is based while reading it made it all the more special.

This story is set after the Civil War has ended, and the country is trying to find a new normal. This feeling of unease is hard to not feel seep through the pages.

What I really liked about this novel was that it was messy. These are flawed characters with real struggles and fears that hold them back, just like you and me. I enjoyed the tender moments between Ben and young Charlie and the more fiery and passionate exchanges between Cora and Ben. There is one moment in particular after a pretty tense scene that ended up being one of my favorite moments as it was such an intimate and vulnerable scene that was so endearing. The writing was quite powerful in moments.

Texas Reclaimed is a wonderful story of resilience, redemption, and love conquering despite the odds, and it is a novel I will not soon forget.

What a moving, emotionally charged story. A former Yankee soldier is determined to uphold his promise he made to his best friend at his death during the Civil War, to go take care of his sister, her half-brother, Charlie and his ranch in Texas. Ben, from New York, determines that he has to uphold the charge he’s been given, even though his father is piping hot about it! Ben is supposed to take over the family’s Philadelphia newspaper business, not run after some girl he doesn’t even know. But, Ben is really trying his very best to run from an addiction to laudanum which they gave him in the prison in Andersonville. He sees what her situation is and uses his inheritance from his grandfather to pay off her farm, as it was being taken from her due to taxes owed. There are no cattle to be seen! When Ben arrives he is so sick, fevers, etc., so Cora finally goes to the doctor and he sends back laudanum. The way Ben reacts scares Cora, as Ben slapped the spoon and the bottle as far away from himself as he could. It takes a bit, but he prays constantly that God would take his addiction away and keep him strong. Ben falls in love with the peace and quiet there and with the beautiful Cora Scott. With each sacrifice he makes for Cora and Charlie, the more she wants him to be a husband to her and a father to Charlie. So much drama, adventure, loss, and so much more happen in this book. There’s also a couple of other men who want to marry Cora. She is so torn. Ben has to prove that he has overcome his addiction before Cora can marry him. He gives it all he’s got! This is such an exciting book-I expect it to be found and made into a mini-series! I would love that. I was given an early advanced copy of the book and this is my own, honest opinion, which I was not required to post. 📕♥️

What a powerful book! This is set in Texas after the Civil War and is not yet a state, so people have to deal with Indian raids, lawlessness and the frontier. Ben McKenzie suffered unimaginable horrors in Andersonville prison camp during the Civil War where his best friend, Jeb, died. Ben promised him that he'd take care of his family back in Texas after the war which is why he's back in Texas after his recovery. He's left his wealthy family and promised fiance in Philadelphia to keep his promise.
Cora is Jeb's sister and when Ben shows up, she initially refuses his help. Cora is a very proud young woman who wants to do everything herself but soon sees that she can't. I admired her spunk but after losing most of her family, she has to accept that she can't keep her ranch afloat. I loved her younger half-brother, Charlie. What a sweet boy he was!
The trials, betrayals and tests they all go through will have you rooting for this group of 3! Ben struggles so much with his past and he leans on the Lord through it all. At times he falters but he never gives up. Cora struggles too as she tries to believe Ben's promises but her past comes into play. So many events and circumstances are relevant today. I fell in love with these characters as they tried so hard to honor family commitments yet still forge ahead with new love and be true to themselves while overcoming past hurts & obstacles. An excellent book!

This is an awesome story! I loved the main characters Cora and Ben as well as Charlie. This story takes place after the civil war and gives insight into the many horrors the soldiers were exposed to on a daily basis. Ben returns home with a stomach condition that the Dr. prescribes laudanum. He becomes addicted. He also returns home with a mission to fulfill a promise made to his best friend who didn’t survive the war. He promised his friend that he would go and check on his family in Texas. He arrives in Texas to find the only family left is his friend’s sister and half brother. He vows to help in every way that he can. While he is there Cora and Charlie’s faith in God begins to help Ben find his own way back to his faith and to the plan that God has for his life. He wants to build a life with Cora and Charlie but he has family commitments back home that he has to deal with first. He leaves to return home and Cora and Charlie are left in Texas. Can God help these faithful servants find his plan for their lives and will he see fit to reunite them? Please read this Christian Historical Romance and find out!!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Christian Historical Romance is one of my favorite genres. Texas Reclaimed by Sherry Shindelar is Book 3 in the Lone Star Redemption Series. I have been enjoying this series from the beginning and I look forward to each new book.

WOW, this book reeled me in from the beginning. The setting of the book is 1866 in Texas, after the Civil War . The 2 main characters of this book are Cora Scott and Ben McKenzie . The storyline really grasped by interest immediately. Cora is doing her best to raise her 9 year old half brother and save the Family Ranch from being taken from them. Cora really wants to be independent in life, although she realizes that she is deeper into financial ruin due to a Scamming Creditor. Ben McKenzie promised his best friends, Cora's late brother, that he would take care of Cora and Charlie. Ben keeps his promise and then realizes that he is falling for Cora. The storyline sees Cora and Ben still struggling with life after War. There are many twists and turns in this book, yet there are many happy moments The book is about Trusting the Lord, Accepting Blessings when our heart doesn't want to, staying strong through the storms of life, and Romance. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance! AMAZING BOOK!

This is the first time I have read anything by this author but this book was a very interesting read and I am super glad that I took the opportunity to read it.This was a super interesting story of moving on with life after the civil war which for many was a very difficult time period. The setting in this book takes place in Texas but before they were given statehood so in a way the land is pretty much lawless and prone to disputes among the Native Americans.

The fmc Cora we really have to admire because not only is she determined to keep her family land but also provide a safe environment for her younger brother. Her older brother perished in the War and his old friend Ben comes to the ranch to help out Cora. With all the chaos going on in the World will something hopeful happen in order to move out of the darkness?

I received a copy of this book from the publisher and all opinions are of my own.

Texas Reclaimed, the third book in the captivating Lonestar Redemption series, is a heartfelt Christian Historical Romance read set in post-Civil War Texas. The story is driven by a diverse, compelling cast of characters headlined by duty bound hero Ben McKenzie, strong and determined heroine Cora Scott, and Cora's nine-year-old half-brother Charlie, who stole my heart. The author's masterful storytelling kept me wrapped up in the drama from beginning to end constantly wondering whether the next twist would bring Ben and Cora closer together or tear apart their already rocky relationship. I love the gentle thread of faith woven quietly but powerfully through the story, adding a touch of warmth and meaning to the characters' journey. I totally enjoyed this emotionally rich story, with a promise of hope, and highly recommend it.

Texas Reclaimed (Lone Star Redemption Book 3) by Sherry Shindelar is a story of struggles. Cora Scott is trying to care for her younger brother, Charlie, and not lose the family Texas ranch. Ben McKenzieis is shackled with Civil War PTSD and prescribed medical addition. He also wants to fulfill a promise made in a prisoner-of-war camp to a fellow inmate. A time of instability for Texas with reconstruction, these two have their hands full. However, the hand of God is clearly seen in these tough times, renewing and growing faith in Him once again.

The story is heartfelt and realistic. The characters’ actions are believable. I do wish that there had been an epilogue where we could see how they faired down the road of time. While it had a happy ending there was still much for them to face and work through in the situation. Still it is an earnest, hope inspiring look at what God can do as we learn to trust Him.

This is book 3 in Shindelar’s series, Lone Star Redemption. It’s helpful to read the series in order, as characters from both books 1 and 2 show up in this final book.

The Civil War is over, and settlers are flooding into Texas. People are trying to put their lives back together after everything was torn apart by war. As one man tries to fulfill a promise to the friend who saved his life, he and those he encounters learn a lot about trust – in each other and in the Lord – and how it plays out in day to day life, which is full of plot twists, including those who would gladly see him fail. It’s not an easy book to read, with so much brokeness, but it is also filled with hope as love grows and clarifies what is most important.

This is a touching story of a former POW Civil War soldier dealing with PTSD and a war related addiction. Ben’s struggles are real and we get a front row seat as he fights to overcome the past and be the man God wants him to be.

Cora has learned the hard way not to trust men, but she never expected Ben to show up on her run-down ranch claiming to be her deceased brother’s best friend with a promise to fulfill in helping her reclaim her land.

Their journey is a hard one with hard decisions along the way; their faith in God’s timing carries them through even when every way seems blocked with obstacles bent on keeping them apart. But their HEA finally comes.

I enjoyed the story. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

1866 was a time when prisoners released from places like Andersonville returned home, bringing a great deal of joy to their families. Unfortunately many brought scars with them - some that you could see and others that were hidden but still greatly affected their lives. Laudanum was prescribed by doctors. It calmed the horrible nightmares, took care of the ongoing pain and seemed like the perfect choice. Only problem - it was highly addicting!

Ben McKenzie returned to Philadelphia having promised to care of Jeb Scott’s mother and sister in Texas. Fighting the demon of addiction, he sets out to fulfill his pledge. Will his help be appreciated or will his dependence interfere with their ability to trust him?

This is the first time I have read a book by this author and it was a winner. Beautiful descriptions of the setting, a romance that was cautious but showed Cora and Ben relying on God constantly for guidance, and a struggle with an addiction to laudanum that caught many in its snare.
The research was extensive and portrayed the characters realistically. Cora and Ben were complex people who faced a variety of obstacles; however, their faith sustained them and gave them courage.
Ms. Shindelar has a command of the language, setting and customs of the era, which made this a very enjoyable read.
I need to go back and read the previous books in the series, although this book stands alone easily.

I have enjoyed reading the first two books from the Lone Star Redemption series by Sherry Shindelar, Texas Forsaken and Texas Divided. I was exciting to read the third installment, Texas Reclaimed. It was a delight meeting Cora and Ben. It was a fun journey to take along with the two and was easy to read from cover to cover in one sitting.

I am going to give Texas Reclaimed a well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean Christian historical fiction, especially those set during the American Civil War era, will love it as much as me. I look forward to reading the next release from Sherry Shindelar in the near future.

Do you enjoy Civil War era stories? Told in Texas? With great characters? Then you need to read Texas Reclaimed. (Even though it’s book 3, it can be read as a standalone.)

Texas is not yet a state and is quite lawless. The people must be strong, and Ben, who struggles with PTSD, and Cora, who doesn’t trust men, are indeed strong. And let’s not forget Charlie. You’ll love him! With danger, struggles, healing, and redemption, this book has it all.

I’m not sure which was better. The characters or the storytelling, but they work well together. Author Sherry Shindelar does a wonderful job of putting her readers right in the scenes. This is the first book I’ve read by Shindelar but it won’t be the last.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review. All thoughts are my own.

I enjoyed the characters depth in this book. Facing struggles head on, fierce protection, each character no matter how big a role in the story has such depth and her writing really reflects the care and time it must have taken to craft this story.

I enjoyed Cora and Ben’s story to healing and redemption. The struggles they each bring to the relationship and that they have to work through together make their story unique. It’s a great reminder that God works things out for good for those who love him. This book left me wanting more of their story!!

The first paragraph of this story had me hooked!
The trials Ben and Cora face as the story progresses are real, and insurmountable, but God.
Sherry Shindelar does a good job of pulling us into their emotions, their joys, their sufferings, their obstacles.
I love when the impossible becomes possible, and it's all because of God's goodness!
Looking forward to reading more of Sherry's books! :)

I really enjoyed the two main characters in this book, as well as little Charlie and their relationships with each other. Personally, I prefer light rom-com books to darker romance books and this was a more heavy book. Even then, I thoroughly enjoyed the change from my normal and to be placed back in Texas. This ranch story following Cora and Ben had me very invested and ready for more.

Really enjoying the 3rd book in the Lone Star Redemption series! Fun to see characters from the other two books interwoven... except for meeting another LeBeau! Boo! Hssss.

Favorite quotes....
Alone. Heart baking as hard as the soil beneath the July sun, parched for love and companionship. Her life before Ben showed up.

The woman was a myriad of palisade walls more impenetrable than oak, but she’d gifted him a step inside the gate last night. He would find his way in again.

Love. How had it crept in past the wall of her heart? If she had any sense, she’d shove it right back out again.
