In pursuit of its goals, the Hierarchy has experimented with the darkest magics, backed revolts and magical supremacist regimes, and enslaved countless thousands, using them as living batteries and sources of magic then discarding their husks without a second thought. It has taken Emily’s innovations, magical and magitech alike, and turned them into tools serving a greater goal, a goal that is now taking shape in a long-forgotten city deep within the Blighted Lands, a goal that will lead to apotheosis or nemesis

Really great to be reading a new "schooled in magic" book, Emily has become on of my favorite characters in fantasy fiction. The author has created an amazing world over these 28 books and all the assorted spinoffs. The world and the system of magic are incredibly well thought out as are the characters that populate it, characters are created and then fade into the background only to reappear later, seamlessly. The main character, Emily, as I have said is one of my all time favorites, we have followed her development from a freshman schoolgirl to a lone power over 28 novels and still can't get enough of her In this novel she faced one of her greatest tests - no spoilers, read the book! Writers like Christopher Nuttall and others are really turning this time into a new golden age of fantasy after a long drought period, support then Highly recommender
Without giving away too much, the twist at the end was far too obvious. Who is the wolf in the fold? There’s really just one person who fits that description. It was such an obvious plot twist that I thought it was too obvious. I spent most of the book looking at everyone else because it simply couldn’t be HIM. So disappointed when the big reveal came and, yup, it was him all along.
Introduction to a rite of passage, usual process from secure background into a rough old world. Too early In the plot development to make meaningful comment
