[1965, Lisboa] Has a degree in Film Directing from the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema - ESTC). He taught at Ar.Co from 2005 to 2010 in the Illustration/ Comic strip department, and lectured at the Porto School of Art – Guimarães branch (ESAP/Guimarães (Escola Superior Artística do Porto - Pólo de Guimarães) between 2006 and 2008, where he coordinated the country’s first Master’s degree in Illustration. His work with comic books began at LX Comics magazine in the early 90s. He was an illustrator for the weekly newspaper Expresso and has had illustrations published in several newspapers: Público, Le Monde (France), O Independente and I newspaper. His published comic books include: História de Lisboa, O Diário de K., Solo e Selva!!! In the field of animation, he worked between 2006 and 2018 as a director and author of animated film, during which time he was awarded four consecutive grants by the ICA for short film projects. With “Pássaros/Birds”, he won the Restart award for best director of a Portuguese short film at the Indie Lisboa Festival 2009. He directed another animated short "Sanguetinta/Bloodink", which premiered at the Vila do Conde Short Film Festival. The third financial support he received from the ICA was in 2011 for a 15- minute animation "Chatear-me-ia morrer tão joveeeeem.../It would piss me of to die so yoooooung", produced by Animais; the film went on to win awards at several festivals. He directed his most recent film in 2018, "ÀTona/Afloat", produced by Animais. He currently runs a comic book publishing company, UMBRA.

Sou suspeito nesta recensão, dado que adoro esta revista desde o primeiro número e apoiei o kickstarter desta edição. O trabalho de edição de Filipe Abranches é, como sempre, impecável e consegue a rara proeza de nos trazer a colisão de dois mundos - o da BD mais erudita e experimental com a ficção científica em estado puro. O resultado são histórias muito bem conseguidas, ilustradas com estilos arrojados que fogem ao convencional. Temos um pouco de tudo - o tecno-otimismo pós-catastrofista de Assim Voam as Cegonhas de Pedro Moura e Marta Teives, a clássica distopia futurista anti-conhecimento e livros de Branco Neve por Vasco Colombo, as visões de um Marte quasi-surrealista de Kriz 3-IO de Fernando Relvas, uma obra esquecida que a Umbra promete recuperar, o cyberpunk mestizo de Trujillo por Gustaffo Vargas, e o surrealismo fantástico de A Fronteira Selvagem por Vasco Colombo e Pedro Morais. A capa, de Rita Alfaiate, é extraordinária no seu estilo cyber (e aqui ainda sou mais suspeito, sou hiper mega fã do trabalho desta ilustradora, ai de quem se atreva a dizer que Neon não é uma das melhores obras de BD portuguesa de sempre).
