4.5 ⭐️ Thank you NetGalley for an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!!
This book is so good! It was fast paced and completely addictive. From the moment I started reading, I genuinely couldn't put it down. It had me hooked and refused let me go until I finished the book. Every chapter ended in a way that made it impossible for me to not keep reading!!
The romance, chemistry, and tension between Nico and Isabella were impeccable!! I really felt their connection through the pages. Their love felt real and undeniable.
The plot was thrilling and had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. I was literally sweating while reading because I was so invested in the characters and what was happening.
The family dynamic in this book is on another level! Whether found or blood, the sense of family was powerful and beautiful. It was one of my favorite aspects of the story and a huge reason why I was so emotionally invested. The relationship between the brothers was especially beautiful and added so much depth to the overall story.
Although I loved the book, the reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because Isabella remained strong and logical for the entirety of the story, which I admired, but I would have loved at least one moment where we could see behind the curtain of her fearlessness. A scene where she broke down or allowed herself to not stay strong for a moment. Additionally, the story takes place over a relatively short period of time, and I felt the characters fell in love a bit too quickly given the intensity and speed of their relationship.
That being said, I still very much enjoyed the book and would absolutely recommend it to everyone! I genuinely can't wait for the next book in the series!!
This book surprised me in so many ways. Usually, in these mafia romances, the female lead ends up being very naive, but Isabella is anything but that. Her trust in Nico is built chapter by chapter, perfectly woven into the suspenseful narrative. I also laughed so much—the sibling dynamics are fantastic, and Mateo is such a sweetheart! This was my first L. Knight book of many to come. I’m already anxious for Casey and Adriano’s story and hope to read it very soon. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
My my my - who doesn’t like a mafia billionaire romance?
The premise immediately caught my attention, and as a fan of the genre, I was genuinely excited to dive in.
The book is fast-paced, easy to get into, and undeniably entertaining. I never felt bored, and I moved through the story quickly. It’s dramatic, emotional, and keeps things moving. Which made it an engaging read overall.
That said, I had some mixed feelings.
The prose clearly aims for something lyrical and heightened. At times, it almost reaches something beautiful. However, I personally found the writing slightly overwrought in places. Simple gestures were often layered with additional metaphors or dramatic phrasing, and I tend to prefer when moments are allowed to stand on their own. Because of this, I occasionally became more aware of the wording than the emotion itself, which took me out of the scene.
I also struggled with the pacing of the romance early on. The emotional intensity between the main characters escalates very quickly, with deep attachment established before I felt the attraction and connection had fully developed on the page. I would have loved more build-up, more tension, more description, more grounding in who they were before they became each other’s “safe place.” I think that would have made the love story feel stronger and more believable.
There were also moments where conversations or past situations were mentioned as if they had already happened, but the reader hadn’t actually seen them. This created some confusion and made the narrative feel slightly uneven at times. This happened more than once, and it left me briefly confused, as I found myself wondering whether I had missed something. When that uncertainty repeats, it starts to feel less like intrigue and more like a gap in continuity.. Additionally, toward the end, there are moments that are meant to feel dangerous and high-stakes, but I never fully felt the tension. The resolution came quickly, which made the climax feel somewhat anticlimactic.
However, and this is important: I did find myself becoming more invested as the story progressed. The characters have something endearing about them, and the mafia-turned-soft dynamic is still a trope I genuinely enjoy. Despite my critiques, I stayed engaged and curious.
Would I read the next book? Probably! The Mancini brothers definitely caught my interest. They’re protective, intense, and surprisingly sweet (even if a bit grumpy at times). I’m curious to see where their stories go next.
Overall, this was an entertaining and fast-paced mafia romance that kept me turning the pages. While certain stylistic choices and the rapid emotional development didn’t fully work for me, I can absolutely see this being a hit for readers who enjoy dramatic, high-intensity romance and bold, expressive prose.
*Thank you to NetGalley & Victory Editing for this ARC*
I went into this book excepted to really love it. A journalist exposing a billionaire mafia family with lots of chaos, say less!
Isabella is a strong fmc with a determination for finding the truth, even if that means she’ll be pushed into the firing line of the morally grey, shady mafia man and the dangerous world that surrounds him. But even then she’s not weak or naive, she stands her ground. I really liked her drive and commitment to uncover what is really going on.
Well, what can I say about Nico… he’s the typical dark, morally grey, protective gangster. Their dynamic is the typical push-pull relationship, she exposes him and the family, puts herself in danger and he is now the one to stop it from harming her. Nicos relationship to his brothers added character depth and side character interest, the family dynamic added a lot of warmth to the story and I’m excited to see where the story goes in further books.
But with that being said, it did feel like this story had been done before, a lot. I was Easily able to figure out the plot and see where it was heading. The chemistry is there, they have plenty of tension, banter and the spice I love but I feel like their relationship developed to quickly, a slightly longer build up would have made their relationship have more depth.
Overall, this wasn’t one of my favourites from L.Knight but I did enjoy the story, the characters and the protective mafia man energy and I would read further books to see where the syndicate legacy takes us.
I absolutely love L. Knight’s books, and this one was no exception. I finished The Cost of Silence in two days, which says a lot about how gripping the storyline is. The plot is strong, well-paced and layered enough to keep you invested the whole way through. The tension builds beautifully, and the emotional stakes feel real.
What L. Knight consistently does well is create intensity without losing the thread of the story. The syndicate world feels immersive, and the twists land at the right moments. There’s enough depth in the relationships to make you care, and the chemistry is compelling.
The only reason I can’t give it five stars comes down to Isabella. At times, I found her incredibly frustrating. There are multiple moments where she psychs herself up to fight, to push back or to take control, but those moments often fall short of meaningful action. She says she’s ready several times, yet we don’t really see that resolve translate into decisions that shift the plot until much later in the book.
That said, the payoff towards the end does bring more weight to her journey. I just would have liked to see her growth reflected more consistently throughout, rather than concentrated at the finish.
Overall, still a strong read and one I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys dark romance with a solid plot and high emotional tension. Not quite five stars for me, but very close.
I know we haven’t heard much from L Knight for a while but crikey, did she come back to us with a huge bang!!!!! This story holds you a willing prisoner for the duration and I couldn’t have been happier to make myself comfortable with Nico and Isabella, Matteo and Adi, by forgetting Rossi, and watch as their lives unravel.
L Knight has brought us a story full of tension, family, a huge amount of heat, betrayal and grief, alpha males with a willingness to burn the world down to keep their loved ones safe.
Watching Nico and Isabella traverse their path was all consuming and addictive. Their chemistry and bond was instant and strong. I loved how easily Isabella re-evaluated the picture of Nico she had in her head. Keeping her judgement on hold as she had a front row seat to his soft, caring side.
And I loved the family aspect of this story. The closeness, support and love that they all share was beautiful to see. It added an extra dimension to an already perfect story.
This story is full to the brim with a maelstrom of emotions that pack one heck of a punch, and a depth that will, without a doubt, leave you breathless and aching for more.
Without hesitation, I would recommend this book and author to anyone and everyone. An absolutely perfect read!!!!
Oh Wow - I want more…… What a great start to a new series. I just love Nico and Isabella.
The suspense was great, the back story intricate and well written and the side characters make you want to read the next instalments immediately.
“A slight smudge sits over my mother’s face as if my father had run his fingers over the image time and again. In that moment, I want to hide this picture away so the smudge is never wiped off, so the physical reminder of his love for his family isn’t erased. That thumbprint is proof love leaves marks deeper than loss ever could.”
This story is one of love, loss and family with a boat load of suspense, intrigue and mafia.
“I’ve never wanted to be someone’s warrior. But for her, I’m realizing I’d be the war itself.”
You get drawn into the story so you feel part of it, so now I want to know Adi’s story so badly - little Letty is going to be a whirlwind for her father but we never quite got to the bottom of what happened to her mother.
Then there is Matteo - he is going to be brought to his knees by someone and he’s not going to know what hit him.
And not forgetting the strong but very silent Rossi.
But there are still dangers - a rat in the mixing bowl that hasn’t yet been found. I want more, I hope we don’t have to wait too long.
Thank you to L. Knight (author), NetGalley (ebook source) and Maddie Wade LTD (publishers) for the chance at reading this book, I was quite excited to get into something different for February and to give something I wouldn't normally read a go. And what do you know I am pleased with my choice because I really did enjoy this book, it was very unputdownable and hooking and if I could have I would have sat there in one sitting and completed it, but I couldn't do that as I have responsibilities and my daughter would not have let me LOL.
The plot was so well written, the characters were balanced and fitted in perfectly to the story, the story itself was easy to read, easy to follow and really enjoyable. If you haven't yet I would recommend adding this into your TBR and pre-ordering it cause you'll really enjoy it as much as I did.
It's one of them books that leaves you hanging, and wanting more I guess I will have to wait for more when the next instalment of the series comes about. But until then I shall be thinking about this book in my mind, and it sure won't be going that far.
What I really do want to know the most, is what happens next?
Isabella and Nico's story is fraught with danger, chemistry, and banter that had me hooked on each page. Isabella finds herself in danger after writing a hard-hitting article on the Mancini family. She is targeted by disgruntled associates of the family and Nico intercedes and offers her protection as long as her investigative skills help him and his family uncover some secrets.
Isabella is a strong FMC, resilient and stubborn but she also knows when to back down. Her bravery to continue her journalism career even after situations arise is a nod to her father's work ethic. She doesn't let Nico steamroll over her; she argued back and tries to find different angles. Nico is grieving the loss of his father and still trying to keep the Mancini empire afloat alongside his brothers Adi and Matteo. As rivals creep closer and threaten their legacy, Nico finds himself entangled with Isabella. The chemistry is instant but he keeps himself focused on finding out who is responsible for the unfolding events.
The minor characters (Adi, Matteo, Isabella's mom, etc) rounded out the story really well and I can't wait to read Matteo's story (my fave Mancini brother 🤭).
Isabella Romano built her career exposing powerful men. Nico Mancini was supposed to be her biggest takedown. Instead, he becomes her most dangerous mistake. When Isabella publishes a story that threatens New York’s most untouchable billionaire family, she thinks she’s telling the truth. Nico knows better. She’s used as bait by someone who wants blood, silence, and control. Now she’s marked. Saving her wasn’t part of his strategy. But once she’s under his roof, and in his bed, Nico realizes the real danger isn’t the enemies circling them—it’s the way she looks at him like she still wants answers… and the way he wants to make her forget every question. The heat is off.the.charts!
Instead, he shields her with his body, his power, and his sins—while fighting the hunger between them that could destroy them both. Because the truth doesn’t just get people killed. And falling for your enemy might be the most lethal choice of all. This story is so well told that you feel every emotion in your heart, and Nico becomes your new book boyfriend! So looking forward to the next book in this series!
I wanted to rate this book so much higher, truly I did. I love L. Knight's work, but this was just not up to par with the others.
Isabella is a powerful and strong female lead character and Nico is the dark and twisted villain we all love so much. But this just felt very "been there, done that, and I saw the movie".
Isabella writes this article, exposing Nico and his family as "shady" and shining a light on the bad things they do within their "business". The mafia daddy obviously doesn't love that and that stirs up drama between the two. Then the rest of his world comes after her and he leans forward to protect her.
It was very much back and forth shady but protective mafia man and the curious but good hearted journalist who fights for the truth. There were no surprises that shook me up and it all went pretty much where I thought from the first chapter.
That being said I did like the connection between Nico and his brothers and I also enjoyed the banter and tension between the couple. It was spicy and fierce.
Nico is a man I can get behind (or under) even if he may be nefarious.
I received a copy of this ARC from netgalley and I am leaving an honest review.
Once again L Knight has written a totally exciting book based on Isabella a truth seeking reporter who will publish her findings no matter the cost or danger to herself. Mateo and his 3 brothers have made good on their fathers final wishes to take away their Mafia business into the light of legitimacy until Isabella publishes a huge expose on the family which has rocked readers and the publishing world except she has endangered herself as well from old guard former affiliates still angry at the sons forsaking all mafia connections. They meet when Mateo pulls Isabella out of the way of a potential hit and run. After a second attempt Mateo realizes there is an attraction and he arbitrarily forces Isabella to take refuge under his protection at his penthouse. The electricity between them is hard to ignore and as everything unfolds the deeper and darker things turn. Once again L Knight has written a totally exciting book that captures and holds readers attention from first to last page in this totally twisted and exciting story!
What a book! I’ve followed Lia Knight - and her alter ego Maddie Wade - for several years, and my love for her writing only keeps growing. This story absolutely captivated me from beginning to end.
Nico and Isabella make an unforgettable couple. Isabella is fierce, determined, and utterly unstoppable in her pursuit of the truth, while Nico is the ultimate book boyfriend - strong, loyal, and deeply loving. Their chemistry is electric and beautifully written.
I don’t usually gravitate toward mafia romances, but Lia Knight is one of my go-to authors, so I couldn’t resist - and I’m so glad I didn’t. This story delivers everything: steamy romance, high-stakes tension, and a powerful sense of family and loyalty that adds real emotional depth.
I loved this book so much that I’m already eager to see more of Matteo and Rossi in future instalments. It was a truly perfect read - impossible to put down, and when it ended, I felt completely bereft.
I normally don't read dark romance - mafia, billionaire, dark academia, etc. because every time I jump into the genre, the concept is usually completely ridiculous, the FMC is helpless and the MMC is prone to use violence instead of his words so when I had a mafia novel as one of my trope challenges, I groaned.
Clearly, I was reading the wrong authors because L. Knight has completely changed my view of mafia novels going forward. I loved Isabella because she was a strong-willed FMC who understood her circumstances and went with the flow when Nico, our mafia don MMC with a heart of gold, was trying to protect her. Although the instalove can be eye-roll inducing normally, I didn't mind it in this case because Isabella and Nico had such great chemistry. I also really loved both Matteo & Adi and am glad this is already listed as a series because I will be picking up their books!
Thanks to #Netgalley & Maddie Wade LTD for the ARC!
The Cost of Silence, the first book in the Syndicate Legacy series, is a captivating read that I eagerly anticipated. The premise of the book, involving a journalist named Isabella Romano who exposes New York’s enigmatic mafia turned billionaire family, piqued my interest. As she delves deeper into the truth, she finds herself in danger from the most powerful mafia families who are desperate to keep their secrets hidden.
Nico, the head of this billionaire family, becomes determined to uncover the source of Isabella’s false information. As he follows her, he inadvertently saves her from an attack and takes her back to his place. Together, they embark on a journey to unravel the mystery behind the article and identify the person who provided the information.
The book masterfully combines a light-hearted mafia-themed plot with a compelling narrative. The protective alpha billionaire, Nico, becomes Isabella’s steadfast protector, shielding her from potential threats. Alongside him is a fierce, intelligent, and strong female main character who refuses to back down from the truth. Their dynamic is further enriched by the presence of an awesome and hilarious found family.
Isabella stands out as one of my favorite main characters due to her unwavering pursuit of the truth. Despite the risks she takes, she remains determined to uncover the truth, even when it puts her in danger. Nico’s role as her protector is crucial, as he provides her with the space to make discoveries and form connections. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Isabella’s involvement and her efforts to assist the brothers in their quest.
While the story had an intriguing and strong plot, I did wish for a bit more development in the romantic tension between Nico and Isabella. Given their brief acquaintance and the rapid development of their relationship, I felt that a more gradual build-up of their connection would have added depth to the story.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed The Cost of Silence and am eager to continue the series to discover what happens next.
The Cost of Silence is a fantastic read and a bold step into a new genre for L. Knight. Moving into the world of the Mafia, Knight handles the transition with confidence and skill. If you didn’t already know this was a new direction for her, you’d easily believe she had been writing in this genre from the very beginning.
The characters of Nico and Isabella are well thought out and believable, each bringing depth and personality to the story. The plot flows smoothly, keeping you engaged while hinting at a much larger world still to come. There is a clear sense of a well planned story, making it obvious that this is just the beginning of a series that will develop naturally over future books.
Overall, The Cost of Silence is an impressive and enjoyable read that leaves you eager for what comes next.
This book was so good. Just amazing. Mafia themed and fast paced.
This was about journalist Isabella who is targeted after writing a story on the Mancini family and the eldest brother Nico who rescues her.
These two had the best chemistry. Their interactions were steamy, romantic, but also intense. Nico was very much the alpha but he was all about protecting her and getting the company legit.
I loved Nico's brother's, Matteo and Adi with his daughter Letty. The whole family network was such a nice look at how they are turning things around.
Dangerous, betrayals, secrets and action packed made this a must read. The whole story kept me involved and the writing was very easy read. Brilliant book!!
I don't read much mafia type romance but L. Knight wrote it therefore I will read it. Let's just say she roped me in starting with the first page. Isabella and Nico were meant to be. Despite the hows and whys of being thrown together they each bring something into the other's life that's been sorely missing. Talk about white hot and steamy! Grab something to fan yourself with because you're going to need it. The dirty dealings and machinations of those on the periphery only serve to make their bond stronger. With Audrey's expertise od digging out the truth and putting together clues that paint the entire picture, the Mancini clan turns a negative into a different side of the truth. Ultimately, the end is justified and the brothers can continue on the journey laid out by their parents.
I need to start by saying how exciting this book was. It balanced a fast pace with slower, reflective moments. I love Isabella's character - determined, strong and never backing down from situations even after they go haywire. Nico's character is well-developed with him trying to find equilibrium with the recent loss of his father and managing his empire. While he emits a dark, anti-hero vibe, he is very protective of those who considers his own.
The plot was good; the supporting characters were amazing and the chemistry between the leads was perfect. I can't wait for Matteo's story and the rest of the books in the series. I would recommend anyone who comes across this review to add The Cost of Silence to their 2026 book list.
I could sense the intense emotions, feel the looks and touches, even almost hear the laughter and banter. The descriptions and realism so good, depth of the characters, the history shared or not. Evidence and clues that show an underlying basis. Action and sizzle and most important of all Family, blood or bond. Mafia changing for the better, going clean or at least as clean as they can possibly get given the generations before, from my point of view is a good thing. This plot was handled really well keeping the edge but also trying not to shed blood unless it was absolutely the only way for the better side to solve and stop it. First in a new series and I already can't wait to read book 2.
Oh, a new series from L.Knight!!! The Cost of Silence is book 1 in the Syndicate Legacy Series.
Nico and Isabella, most definitely enemies! Isabella is a reporter that is determined to reveal the truth about the mafia and that includes Nico. When she gets a story, she believes it is a real story, she publishes it and now she has a target on herself. Nico is determined to save her but something about them living together might be bringing the danger to a more personal level. He can keep her safe, but can they keep the flames from burning them down!!
I am so excited to read this new series and L.Knight knows just how to give us what we need but keeps hanging on for more!
This book will suck you in and you will enjoy every second of it. The characters were perfectly written and lay groundwork for the rest of the series. The three brothers are very close and are all about family. When things disrupt their normal life routines, will they be ready for the storm Belle? Belle is a determined journalist who is willing to write the hard articles that can put your life on the line. She never expected to be saved by a family she wrote about. Will she be able to figure out who the brothers are or will she still believe what she wrote in the article? I devoured this book and I can’t wait for the second book!
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book at first, but the more I read, the more I liked it. Isabella is a tough, take no prisoners reporter and Nico is the Mafia Don who is trying to lead by heart. As bossy as Nico is, that doesn’t stop Isabella from standing her ground. Isabella brought life and light back into the Mancini brothers life’s and they showed their gratitude by protecting her, just like she was protecting Nico’s heart. I’m certain the next book is Adi’s & I cannot wait for it, but the one I’m most looking forward to is Matteo’s book 😉
I really enjoyed reading The cost of silence . journalist Isabella Romano writes a story that exposed the Billionaire mancini family . She thought it was the truth . Unfortunately she is now in danger but it's not the man incharge Nico mancini . Nico comes to her rescue and finds himself intrigued and attracted to Isabella . He along with his brothers work to find who's trying to destroy them and keep Isabella safe . This story is outstanding . I couldn't put it down . Very action packed and suspenseful . I highly recommend taking the time to read .
Nice romantic story. Mafia done differently. Very cleanly I would say, but not exactly mafia. Even though the main character has doubts about how to play it, he eventually decides...
I always like big families in books that stick together. This was the case. Very nicely written characters. They were all very likeable and territorial and that made the story a story.
There were a few twists, some family matters that had to be resolved. The chemistry between the main characters was, sort of, normal.
The book was okay, I would easily read the next part.
The Legacy you leave a choice? L Knight starts off another series with a bestseller. I could not put this book down. If you like your heros morally grey and your heroines tough this is a book for you. A page turner. This book tells the story of family and how important is to honor that and make sure yiu are leaving a legacy you choice and can be proud of. So grab a bowl of pasta and pick your Italian book boyfriend. Wink wink.
This book has it all suspense, danger, and wonderful characters! The story will pull you in and keep you so engaged that you won't want to stop reading. The way the brothers all stick together and we can't forget the loyal Rossi. After everything that Matteo and Isabella go thru to get their HEA and then to find out someone has betrayed them and they don't know who. Hope we don't have to wait too long to get Ari's story.
Isabella a reporter thought she got the story of a lifetime exposing a billionaire family for their secrets. She was given access to information and verified her information only to find she was a pawn in someone’s game who now wants to silence her. And the person/family to come to her aid was none other than the family she exposed. Now they are working together to figure out who is coming after them all.
I could not get enough of this book! Isabella is reporter who chases the truth no matter what upheaval it causes. Nico operates in the gray but until this article had been trending more towards the light. Nico protects his family and what is his at all cost, but Isabella became his protect long before she knew. There are a lot of revelations and twists in this book that kept me engaged. I am so ready for the rest of this series. I would have binged it if it'd been available.
