She rescued him. He couldn’t let her go.

Charlotte, a young secretary for a famed Negro lawyer in 1887 Philly, has her world flipped upside down when she saves wealthy, widowed banker Spencer Rain from being robbed.

Spencer is instantly captivated by Charlotte’s beauty, wit and charming strength. In her presence, he finds the solace from the pain of his wife’s death and the strain of his suffocating, upper class life.

For Charlotte, Spencer opens her up to a lavish world and an unbreakable love she could only dream of.

Despite the laws of society telling them it’s wrong, Charlotte and Spencer fall in love, willing to fight whomever to be together.

But it won’t be easy because Spencer’s oldest friend, Dax O’Connor, sees Charlotte as a threat to everything Spencer’s built, and vows to keep them apart.

this was… something. nothing I enjoyed! Black woman feels like a white man gave her power… by taking her to the opera & being seen? but he raises his hand to her in anger at the first real heated disagreement/misunderstanding? then she says him doing that made her feel like just a Negro? please.

This was such a lovely story. I truly enjoyed reading it. Spencer was such a wonderful gentleman and Charlotte was a sharp as whip, beautiful in and out, amazing woman. Dax was such a horrible weasel! ( yeah I said it 😂😂) He was a horrible evil man. His fate was justified, served him right. But I’m happy Spencer got right in the end because Charlotte deserved a good man. Bravo on the story!!! Ps i need to make my way to an Opera show myself.

Rushed

I am tired of Black women being so easy. She tells Spencer she's not the kind of woman to be kept by a man. Next thing you know she kissed him and doesn't know why she didi it then on to bed she goes. She starts an affair with him. Geez, lady. Make up your mind. And I got so tired of her calling him "sir" while he called her by her name. It was very rushed towards the end. It's as if the writer was given a limit as to how long this book could be. Loved the story line but wasn't realistic for the 1800's to me.

Good story

Much better than the first book! I liked these main characters and their story arc. A couple of things that made me give it a 3 instead of a 4 are: the odd blowup and the ending.

The big thing that made them breakup was weird. Is this man bipolar?? 🧐 Because that's how it came off. And the ending... Very abrupt. It felt rushed and very unsatisfying.

This book reminds me of the tv show Bridgerton

It’s so beautiful crafted! Just a nice refreshing read of an interracial couple when being in that relationship was looked down upon! Books like this must be my guilty pleasure because ughhhh so adorable I loved it

In want of more

I realize that this story is intended as a short and spicy narrative but I can't help but wanting and needing more closure. Historical is one of my favorites and I do so enjoy Ms. Stacy-Deanne's writing. I just need the ending to not be so open ended.
