This book made me want to run out and buy some polka dot pants STAT. Sister nut wants to sing and dance, but the entire nut family is busy running around until....enter stage left Grandma Nut, who has plenty of time to disco with sister nut. I loved this book because not only did it allow me to use a disco ball AND a bubble machine in storytime, but, it has an amazing dance to do with kids and even a handy dandy instruction book in the back. Is it weird to have a story about acorns? Sure, but, if they're wearing polka-dot pants-it makes it totally ok. Be sure to listen to the song-you'll be singing it all day long and wishing you too had some polka-dot pants. http://www.thenutfamily.com/songs.html
We hit the jackpot, and hosted Eric Litwin for this "book birthday." His performance was engaging and interactive and the kids (grades JK-1) absolutely loved this book.
Not my cup of tea. However, I think kids would find it fun and if I had downloaded the song it might make me change my mind as well. Maybe I can't get past the characters being nuts?
The Nuts: Sing and Dance in Your Polka-Dot Pants: -Hazel loves to dance, especially in her Polka-Dot pants. She tries to get her whole family to sing and dance along with her but nobody would. When its time for the school dance everyone has changed their mind once they see how much fun it is to dance with friends and family. Soon everyone is dancing away and having a ball! The Nuts: Sing and Dance in Your Polka-Dot Pants is perfect for children who need help getting out of their shell but also the children who just love to be silly. -Activity: Discuss why it is okay to not want to do things that everyone is doing. Discuss why it is okay to step out of your comfort zone. Ask the students to share a time they felt uncomfortable or shy. Have the students get into groups and create a fun dance. Have a list of songs they can pick from to dance too. After they are done with that have fun outfits/costumes the students can wear to perform in. Then have each group perform in front of the class. Hand out a prize to students for their participation.
Litwin, E., & Magoon, S. (2015). The Nuts: Sing and dance in your polka-dot pants. New York: Little, Brown and Company.
Hazel Nut wants to sing and dance with her family. As her family is not involved in her moves, she calls her grandmother, and every family member join dancing and singing. Children would love to put on polka dot pants, singing and dancing, as the protagonist character does in this picture book children can relate. The song could be downloaded via website, and the music video is also available via YouTube one good quality is the access for children/families. If the music was singing by a girl, it would be better to connect to the story of the book because Hazel Nut is the main singer and is a girl. It was interesting for me to the book industries expand their focus to music and other products in this way. Music as a multimodal element is adopted in this picture book, and readers could listen to the song and also watch a music video. Picture books are no longer limited to texts and illustrations, but to music .
This is a fun book. Eric Litwin sure knows how to incorporate singing and dancing in his books! As with the original Pete the Cat books, this book is better with the accompanying mp3, which features Eric reading the story and the super-fun, polka dot pants song. I give this book 3- 3 1/2 stars. The Nut family is too preoccupied to notice sister nut singing her polka dot pants song. Dad's head is in a book, mom's doing laundry, etc. Finally, the sister calls grandma Nut and she can't be ignored any more. I know it's a different series, but I kept wanting the Nuts to have a better attitude- like Pete the Cat does. Will dad dance? Not a chance! Will mom sing? Not a chance! (There's not a lot of faith in the family members) Granted, they DO come around, but I don't know. It made me feel sad for the ignored girl- and it takes grandma getting involved to get everyone to come around.
It's a book with a beat! A great book to read as a group. After reading the story, we danced to the video on TheNutFamily.com website.
2016 Storytime theme: Book Boogie - Nuts 2018 storytime theme: dance (Libraries Rock) 2019 storytime theme: dancing 2021 storytime theme: acorns 2026 storytime theme: Book Boogie - This is definitely a book that I reach for when there's a musical or dancing storytime session. I did not pull up the video or audio from Litwin, but I did share with that he made a song and you can find it online.
I thought the rhythm of this book sounded familiar, and then I came to Goodreads and put Litwin together with Pete the Cat. THAT'S why I felt I already knew this book! (Maybe if I'd listened to the song, I would have enjoyed it more...)
Anyway, it's a really dumb but infectious song about dancing in your polka-dot pants. It's still stuck in my head, and I read the book over an hour ago.
Also, it got an extra star for the overuse of terrible, nut-related puns. (Oppan Gangnut Style? NUTELLAPHONE?! Too good!)
Admittedly, I felt a little bummed when Hazel's family completely ignored her attempts at gaining their attention. I know families are often busy, but I would've rather the family joined Hazel from the start to show their support. Everything ends well, and I love the incorporation of song and dance into the book with a free song download for kids. It's a great way to have them interact with the book.
We LOVE Pete the Cat and are obsessed with The Nuts: Bedtime at the Nut House so when I saw there was a new one out in the beloved Nuts Series, I ordered it right away. Definitely did not disappoint. Another fun one to dance the wiggles out with at bedtime! Especially love the story here with Grandma Nut saving the day. ;-)
The Nuts a female nut that love to disco in her poka dot pants. "POKA DOT PANT -SPOKA DOT PANTS do do do doooo" is the music to the book. This is the ultimate get you blood move'in book for young readers. It is a great read aloud and the music can be used to transition students for one activity to the next.

If you love the lyrical interactive text of Pete the Cat, you will enjoy The Nuts: Sing and Dance in your polka dot pants by Eric Litwin! Hazel nut just wants to sing and dance, does her family make time, not a chance! This book had my goof nuts joining in with rhymes, dancing, and giggling away. Spoiler alert: everybody dances in the end!
The crazy thing about this book (and I am not talking about anthropomorphic nuts) is that the text gets stuck in your head: "Polka dot pants! Polka dot pants! Sing and dance in your polka dot pants!"
Hazel Nut just wants to sing and dance in her polka dot pants, but her family is ignoring her, until Grandma comes and saves the day. While the acorn thing threw me off at first, the rhythm and song was super catchy and there are so many things you could do with this book in a storytime.
Super cute. Has a fun song to go with it (free download!) about a little nut girl and her nut family and how everyone is too busy to dance with her except for one special person. Who couldn't enjoy a book about dancing in polka dot pants?!
Move over Pete the Cat, Hazel the Nut is taking center stage. Hazel wants to dance and sing, but can't get her family to join in ... until she calls Grandma. And Grandma is READY TO ROCK!
Eric Litwin is the king of writing great books that have a chorus that will hook the kids in the story time audience. In this book, Hazel Nut is just looking for a family member who will sing and dance with her in her polka dot pants. Grandma Nut comes to the rescue.
Oh my word! This is the BEST kid's book. First off, we love Eric Litwin at our house. His ability to put words together with a fun rhythm is amazing! This book, however, is just awesome! My almost 4 year old goes around singing about polka dot pants...and so does Momma! :) We love this book!
A great story time read. Our library purchased this as a VOX book (audio, much like playaway) and the reader is great. This is by the author of Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, and it is just as awesome.
This book will have you going nuts about polka-dot pants! While I enjoyed the idea of this book, and the rhythmic flow to the words, I feel like at certain parts it dragged on a little too long. It was a fun read, but I don't have any plans to read it again soon.
As with the first Nut Family book, I enjoy the story that much more when you play the music along with the story. It begs to have some rhythm as you rock the dance moves :)
