Love & Baseball

Rate this book
She needed a boyfriend. AI came to her rescue. But then her fake boyfriend showed up at school.

Brielle has never wanted a boyfriend. She's happy with her book boyfriends--purely fictional, right? Easy to maintain. She's also not a huge fan of sports, except baseball. Not playing it. No. Again, books and cozy afternoons are her thing. But Brielle can get into baseball with the best of them when it comes to watching, repeating stats, and wearing her favorite jerseys. But apparently, that's not enough in life. At least according to her four nosy aunts, who all think she needs a boyfriend, people at school who are convinced Brielle is a closet serial killer because she's happier with her books, and yeah. Valentine’s Day is on the calendar.

There is a purpose for AI, and Brielle decides the genius thing to do is make a fake boyfriend. Complete with deepfake photos, Brielle creates the perfect boyfriend, and no one needs to know he's entirely fictional. They just need to believe she met him over summer vacation, and he lives somewhere in North Carolina. Only he doesn't. When baseball catcher, Brooks Mason shows up at high school, a lookalike to Brielle's AI boyfriend, her entire world becomes a dog-eared, bent pages book nightmare.

Brooks is getting sick of all the girls at school wanting to date him. He wants to play ball and hang out. So, yeah. It makes sense to help Brielle out. Fake date? Why not? But once together, dating for show becomes an act that both Brielle and Brooks aren't quite prepared for, and dealing with unexpected attraction, complicated situations, and interfering aunts and bffs?

It's a grand slam of problems just waiting to happen, plus a game-changing shot at a championship homerun at love.

“She needed a boyfriend. AI came to her rescue. But then her fake boyfriend showed up at school.”

I’m going to venture to say that this is the best YA rom-com I’ve ever read!

This stage of life is stuffed with big decisions and blossoming faith and there doesn’t seem to be many books available for this audience that align with Christian values. As a teacher, I hear about how many young girls struggle with feeling alone, insecure and unseen. Jaime Jo Wright’s story offers young adults clarity, encouragement and a gentle reminder that God is with them as they navigate friendships, forge their identity and discover their purpose.

There’s no doubt that this book, told in such an authentic voice and centered around online safety and first romances, will help young adults feel seen and supported and offer hope for the confusing situations they find themselves in.

I thoroughly enjoyed this rom-com; my heart went out to Brielle Walters when she realized that her situation had grown out of control and when I met Brooks Mason on the page, I hoped that my niece would one day meet someone as thoughtful and centered as him. This book is a great starting point for discussions around social media, dating, and fitting in.

I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Love & Baseball

This book was such a delightful surprise. Love & Baseball is a clean YA romcom that perfectly balances humor, heart, and just the right amount of teen awkwardness.

Brielle is completely relatable. A book-loving introvert who would rather analyze baseball stats than socialize, she’s content with fictional boyfriends and cozy afternoons. Unfortunately, the world around her has other ideas. Between nosy relatives, school rumors, and Valentine’s Day looming, her decision to create an AI-generated fake boyfriend spirals into a situation she never could have imagined.

Enter Brooks Mason, the new catcher who just happens to look exactly like her digital creation.

What follows is classic fake-dating fun, filled with laugh-out-loud moments, swoony tension, and genuine emotional growth. I loved how the story explored identity, insecurity, and the pressure teens feel to fit into expectations. Beneath the humor is a sweet reminder that you don’t have to reinvent yourself to be worthy of love or friendship.

The romance stays clean and age-appropriate, making this a perfect read for ages 12–18. It’s wholesome, charming, and full of baseball energy and bookish charm.

If you enjoy fake dating tropes, strong teen voices, and sweet romance with heart, this one is a home run. ⚾📚

Love and Baseball by Jaime Jo Wright
A Christian Young Adult Rom-Com
Release date: February 10th

My review:
This was such a fun story with some awesome themes surrounding integrity and character during the high school years. This is not Jaime Jo Wright’s typical story, but still has all the elements of her amazing writing and strong Christian themes. I appreciated the realistic portrayal of the teen characters conflicts, while also being able to show a lot of biblical values without being overly critical/preachy. I think a lot of teens will appreciate this style of storytelling! Another thing I loved was the witty dialogue and comedic moments! And the Pride and Prejudice references! If your teen enjoys lighthearted romantic comedies, this is the perfect story. If your teen enjoys something more suspenseful and gothic, check out Wright’s other titles!!🤪
Violence: none
Language: none, (but, a few mentions of “oh gosh”)
💕Romance: focuses on friendship and what the foundation of a relationship should look like, one non-descriptive kiss at the end. It’s very sweet and totally appropriate for YA.
My age rating: 14+
The main characters are 16, so girls at that age may enjoy it more.

Love and Baseball is such a good read. It was funny and had me smiling and giggling from the very beginning.

At the same time, this story tugged at my heart. It takes you back to your teenage years—the pressure to meet expectations, the struggle of feeling misunderstood, and the pain of wanting to feel truly seen and loved by your parents. Those moments felt very real and relatable.

What I loved most was how Jaime wove faith into the story. God is present in a way that feels natural and meaningful, especially for Christian teens. The message is encouraging without being overwhelming, making it a beautiful and accessible faith-filled read.

I received an ARC copy from the author and was not required to leave a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My 12 yo’s thoughts:
It was amazing! Brooks was my favorite character because he was so chill and not over dramatic. I liked Brooks’ nicknames for Brielle. I really liked that they had something in common, liking baseball so much. And I liked that Brielle made Brooks read a book. I also really liked Lia and that she was always there in Brielle’s pocket. I recommend this book for anyone who likes baseball or books.

My thoughts:
Firstly, every time my daughter returned my kindle to me after reading this book she had a HUGE smile on her face.

“You’d better be telling me the truth, Shortstop,” he muttered. “I can honestly say, I’m being one-hundred percent honest,” I breathed.

What a fantastic clean YA appropriate fake-dating story! I loved that there was a focus on integrity even when in high school. I enjoyed the Christian faith and emphasis on biblical standards without being preachy. I appreciated the focus of friendship and it being the foundation of a relationship.

Brielle loves romance books and baseball. What a combo! She is quirky and fun. I loved all her comments about Pride & Prejudice. Brooks lives and breathes baseball. He is kind and truly cares. He gives Brielle a nickname and forehead kisses, y’all! It was so sweet.
Brielle and Brooks were realistic characters that faced real teen challenges and personal struggles. I enjoyed their witty dialogue and a few moments had me snickering. This is a fantastic book for teens/YA looking for a clean, lighthearted, romantic comedy, highly recommend.

A few more quotes:
“It’s like a fairy tale come true. And that video from last night? It makes you look like—like Flynn Ryder from Tangled. Cute, considerate, playful, and all mine.” “I’m not all yours,” I said quickly. “I know. Hence our problem.” Brielle mashed her lips together and glared at me. “Everyone thinks we are a walking romance novel come to life.”

“Approach ball like you approach life. You go at it straight, confident, and honest. God will take you the rest of the way, and where you end up, well, that’s His decision. You just do your best.”

An AI boyfriend.

What could possibly go wrong? A lot according to this writing duo!

Brielle has a good head on her shoulders and knows herself very well. But she is so
tired of being told she needs a boyfriend.

Inspiration strikes and voila—she creates her ideal match, photos and all! As an added bonus, he’s a catcher for his high school baseball team.

The only sport bookish Brielle understands or enjoys. Her friends are convinced. Her crazy aunts (whom I LOVE!) are sold on it. Life is good.

Brooks is having a bummer of a year. His mom doesn’t like the weather in Minnesota ❄️ so his dad takes a job in the warm, sunny climate of—wait for it—Wisconsin.

His position of starting catcher and his dream of playing in the minor league is hanging on by a thread. But when he befriends the star player and captain of the baseball team there’s a chance.

Unfortunately, his new bruh is Brielle’s brother. Brielle, the girl with the AI guy…who’s named Brooks, who is a catcher like Brooks, and who looks just like Brooks.

Let the hilarity ensue! By the end of the book you’ll be asking for more YA romcoms like this one. A treat for lovers of clean romance with a twist for sure!

I received an advance copy from the publisher. I’m under no obligation and my review has not been solicited. Recommend!

Kudos to this mother-daughter team for a book with a fun and relevant premise and the perfect YA execution. Brielle's over-the-top first person voice was very high school, cute, and hysterical. I loved her tight bond with her brother and her love and respect for both of her parents, even through her tantrums. Brooks was a great hero, albeit a high school boy who was clueless at how to handle relationships (even a fake one). He had a tender heart that hurt every time his parents argued and had a driven dedication to baseball that was nice to see in a teenager. I loved learning more about high school baseball and its culture through Brooks and Brielle's older brother Reece.

It's a quick read that will have you doubling over in laughter and rooting for Brielle and Brooks to make their relationship status real. There was a nice faith thread woven into the story and Brielle's dad was an awesome role model (even if a little scary).

Teen romance
Character growth
Faith elements

This is a cute young adult romance. Brooks and Brielle’s story is filled with character growth, teen angst, and age appropriate romance, making it the perfect pick for readers looking for a clean YA love story. It’s a sweet, feel good read that captures first love in a way that feels genuine, tender, and easy to root for from start to finish.

I didn’t love all of the parenting decisions, but I appreciated the closeness of Brielle’s family. I look forward to recommending this book to my daughter one day!

Not the normal Jaime Jo Wright novel but a must read for romance fans. This is an amazing sweet teen Rom-Com full of AI boyfriends, fake dating, the annoyance of social media and the problems it can cause, best friends, family, and clean romance. This YA book, with its lesson about honesty, is one teens, or adults, can read without the fear of coming across something they don't want to read. No bad language and only a sweet first kiss. I highly recommend it.

This is and laugh-out-loud funny story! The main teen characters have some depth and care for others. They have their passions (baseball and reading), and they don't care what others think. At least they try not to. I like how family and faith are an important part of these teens' lives. I suppose for a teen, this story might be considered swoony, but I am too old to judge that ha! It's a wonderful, clean, no spice, YA novel! I highly recommend Love and Baseball to all the tween and teen girls!

Love & baseball was so good! It was beautifully written and so unique. I’m so honored that I got the chance to read it early. The characters were awesome I loved how Brielle talked about God and her faith. It was fun seeing Brooks relationship with Brielles family and their love for pizza and games! And obviously I loved seeing Brooks and Brielles relationship when they were pretending to date and when they were pretending not to like each other. It’s a cute clean baseball Romcom with no cussing and I highly recommend this to every romcom lover and who knows maybe you’ll have a friend who’s in your back pocket to buddy read it with because every one needs a best friend like Lia!

So. Fun. Create a fake AI boyfriend, what a great way to get people to leave you alone about having a boyfriend. And then for AI boyfriend to show up in person—ack, a dream! I absolutely loved Brooks and how he treated Brielle. I was a bit unsure how I would like the dual points of view, but it totally worked out—it was neat to see inside his head and what the whole fake dating thing was doing to him too. The faith portion wasn’t over-the-top, it’s a book I could easily give my daughter’s friends who might not be open to anything super religious. I also liked that not everyone in this story was perfect. There was the great example of a Godly family and what God-honoring parents should be like, but there were also friends and parents who weren’t living up to what God calls them to be. Like real life. Brielle’s best friend Lia was fantastic!! I loved all the pocket-talk they did. Such a cute part of the story. Back in the day we had pen-pals, now you can have real life pocket pals who can be part of your everyday life. Love it!

I didn’t know how everything was going to play out along the way, which is always a bonus the first time you read a great book. This is one you will want to give the teen girls in your life. Lots of good lessons you could extract and talk about, but also just a lot of fun! I’ve read a lot of YA books, and over the past couple years I’ve noticed some of the ones with faith are just kind of boring, or just get to be a bit too off the mark. Even though I absolutely love Jaime Jo Wright, I went in not sure what to expect, and I’m happy to report I came away with a 5 star review, which I don’t give out lightly. Well done Jaime and Chloe!

Thank you Jaime Jo Write and Chloe JoAnne for writing a book for teens that is well-written, is a clean no-spice read and that has Christian faith content. I have been recommending this one to all the moms I know of teen girls. When my own girl is old enough...this is exactly the kind of book I want to be available for her to read.

This book has a great blend of comedy with complicated relationships, lessons learned and family coming together to support one another.

Brielle and Brooks navigate some difficult circumstances...not perfectly I'll say but I really enjoyed how they both grew during the story and the ending is so sweet!

This book features:

* Athletic guy paired with a bookish girl

* Teen romance

* AI boyfriend turned into real life

* Christian faith elements

* Positive sibling and parent relationships

* Strong character growth

100% recommend this for teens and their moms to read together. Lots of great discussion topics. And I can't go without mentioning...bruh is in here so it's definitely a teen book from today's era!

This book releases in just a few hours at midnight...which is February 10, 2026 on Kindle Unlimited and in paperback.

Thank you the authors for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own. I ended up purchasing a paperback for my at home shelf and will likely pick up another copy soon for our church library.

Overall a job well done. YA that's clean and I can comfortably recommend? Practically unheard of in today's world....until now! Love what Jaime and her daughter are feeling called to do or rather write.
I was pleasantly surprised by the ZERO cursing. Liked the light faith interwoven, not to mention solid family dynamics and moral values. There was a lot of lying with the fake dating trope, which I could see some family's not loving, but both Brooke and Brielle learn their lesson by books end. Thank you Jaime for the ARC this is my honest review.

I'm not a YA but seriously enjoyed this book! Brielle had me giggling with the inside her head commentary throughout the book and I loved the close family dynamics. The book features teenage problems, pressure, and how social media comes into play and can blow up everything. I loved the honest conversations between the parents and teens and liked how both main characters thought each other wasn't struggling with things, when they definitely were and just didn't fess up. Really shows you that you never know what someone may be going through and to always be kind!

Fun and scary

As an older reader YA is not my typical read. BUT given I follow JJW I wanted to read this.
I enjoyed it.
The scary part is this technology could result in a real life situation like this. It was eye opening for this grandma.
I am sure young romance readers will love the book. Go Brewers! I too enjoy baseball.
And there are some great points made about honesty and integrity. Good job mom and daughter team.
