Lobo and Diana duke it out in a best 2 out of 3 rounds, hand to hand, to-the-death, combat game and it is brutal AF. It had a kind of comedic tone with Lobo hitting on Diana through out the fight, and with battles involving them playing chess, and the power slap challenge among other things.
To top it all off, God watches their fight and Lobo loses when he calls Gods name in vain and God takes away his regenerative ability. I like this one a little batter than the Superman/Captain Atom fight cause it made me laugh. Whatever is going on with Time Trapper and crew fells like it’s being dragged on for too many issues. The art work here was also very hit or miss.
Not as much fun as the Superman vs Captain Atom one. I get that Lobo is the way that he is and maybe he just isn't my cup of tea. It still provided some fun and good action.
This issue was an absolute blast from start to finish. I knew I was in for a wild ride the moment Wonder Woman was matched up against Lobo. I haven’t picked up every round of DC K.O., but I had to check this one out after loving Absolute Wonder Woman and realizing I simply needed more Wonder Woman in my life. I’m really glad I did.
The entire issue is packed with creativity. I loved the artwork and the way different suits and designs were used throughout the fights, giving each moment a fresh visual identity. Lobo, in particular, is a highlight. Beyond the nonstop action, his humor and constant side comments made the issue even more entertaining and genuinely fun to read!
Well, this is far from Joëlle Jones best work. It honestly feels like this comic was written by editorial mandate. Not to say this comic had some fun moments, though. The shot of Wonder Woman in her Golden Armor riding Lobo's Hog to slicing him in half was epic stuff, at least in isolation. This comic seems to try to go for the energy of Daniel Warren Johnson's Do A Powerbomb series, but lacks the emotional resonance that series had in spades. The second round is probably my favorite segment of the book, but it's not without it's weirdness, too. Like Cassie referencing the New 52, despite her never breaking the fourth wall before. The first round is just downright confusing, with the knockout coming completely out of nowhere. The third round, though, is where most of my frustrations with this comic lie. The only reason Wonder Woman won the deciding victory is because a "god" stepped in on her behalf. That is just utter bullshit. Why does DC treat Wonder Woman like this? She is just as strong as Superman, but can't beat Lobo without interference? What a load.
Out of all the DC KO stuff so far this one felt like the writer was having the most fun, what an absolute blast of an issue. It legit felt like the heart of darkness was just throwing in new rules to see these two immortals dish it out longer, and the heart of darkness was not the only one having fun watching as this even also caught the attention of one certain being high in the sky…the presence! Hahaha, that’s right! All the way sitting in the clouds, trimming their toe nails and clicking away through the channels…the presence finally stopped and watched through the Wonder Woman vs lobo fight from the start. Appearing throughout the issue to rewind or fast forward through events. The first arena takes place on a packet planet in an actual arena as the wrestler style announcer introduces Lobo as:
“ ladies and gentlemen…rev up your engines and lock up your liquor cabinets! From the farthest, darkest reaches the space…he is the intergalactic bounty hunter, the last Czarnian, the biker of the cosmos…the main man…LOBOOOOOOOO!”
And in the other corner Wonder Woman suits up and coldly walks in with the introduction:
“Hailing from the hidden island of Themyscira…she is the chosen champion of Olympus…the amazon enforcer…WONDER WOMAN!”
The fight immediately starts off with a bang as Diana rushes in close and starts delivering powerful blows, but this is the main man we are talking about and he is able to take the hits and knock her back just as easily. Only for Diana to clap back by putting her lasso around his neck then ripping him back in real close for some more powerful hits. Lobo returning in kind, additionally putting her into a headlock and bashing her head in until she went unconscious. Absolutely brutal and the first KO of the issue.
As round 2 gets around the battlefield is shifted to Themyscira and the fighters are permitted to choose their own firm. Diana is seen in her golden armor with a sword and shield waiting for lobo as he zooms in on his cycle. She immediately catches him off guard by throwing her shield and knocking him off the bike, only for lobo to arise from the smoke in his NEW 52 SLIM FORM!! HAHAHAHA! He is feeling confident and wanted to give something “pretty” for them to look at, lol. But Diana’s “ideal form” is not just in her golden armor, that is just a byproduct, as her true form is when she has her warrior sisters standing at her side. And if anything Apokolips appreciates females and their fury, ;). Suddenly Diana is surrounded by the other wonder women who all rush in and start slashing off body parts, making it hard for lobo to get them and regenerate back. He does discover when he does regenerate he regenerates into his natural form but that isn’t enough to let up on the wonder girls hitting him down every other moment. Even the animals are getting in on it, a kanga is hilariously seen punching down a space dolphin. But lobo is nothing if not a brutal fighter and using the amazons against them he literally swings their bodies around as weapons to knock them away! But these are still the amazons we are talking about, and with every slash and hit lobo is left crawling in defeat and a pool of his own blood. Sure he could just regrow everything, but that will be a little hard when Diana comes flying in on his own bike to incinerate him to BITS!
It’s now round 3 and the heart of Apokolips is deciding to switch things up. Putting the evenly matched immortals into a series of classic contests to establish which is the true champion. They engage in a slapping competition, chess boxing, shin kicking, and the classic art of carjitsu. But of course all roads only lead back to one place…gladiatorial combat! Lobo decides he has had enough and pulls out a load of guns to try and take Diana down…this is Wonder Woman we are talking about, she is able to deflect all of those and then zip away to grab and use his own hook against him. She is able to chain him up and give enough time to grab her own sword. Lobo is not one to fear messing up his ow body, and as she rushes in with the sword he rips the chain from his back and pulls wonder woman in like scorpion from mortal Kombat. With Lobo’s hook in her back and being so close to him she takes her sword and attempts to impale him. Lobo doesn’t like this move and grabs her arm and snaps it! He doesn’t see any point to this, he is the main man who made a deal with the “damn almighty” so he can’t die. But right as he was about to end things…the presence appeared to the side. It didn’t appreciate lobo taking its name in vein, so it ripped up the immortality contract right there on the spot and permitted Wonder Woman to drive the sword deep into lobo and attain the KO! Hahahaha!
The end of this issue of course continues the watchtower interlude. Last we left off in Aquaman vs Hawkman, the world forger deployed a group of booster golds to fight the booster gold taken over by deadwood and pile on top of him. Darkseid uses his power to knock all of them away, and then deployed omega beams from booster to take down the world forger!! WHAT?! NO! Darkseid claims the forger serves his purpose and that this was always inevitable. Oh no.

This was perhaps the most self aware issue, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. It was meta.
Lobo was aware of the fact he had a deal with Heaven preventing him from ever dying, because no afterlife wants him. That was one of the first things I learned about DC comics, back in 1993-ish, when I was looking through a newspaper of comic book news handed to me in one of my very first trips to a comic book store. As a framing device, we were aware that the Presence (God) was watching this fight between Lobo and Wonder Woman.
The dramatic reveal of Lobo using his New 52 skin was tacky. Cassie shouted, "What in the New 52 is that?" at the sight of Lobo's alternate New 52 self. I'm not sure why Cassie would know that term, but yes, that is what readers would have said. (I refused to actually read anything in New 52, so I only know about the revamped version of Lobo because of articles I saw online about it.)
My favorite element, though maybe it's a reach, is that the Presence appeared to be styled like his "Wally" self from the Peter David run of Supergirl in the 90s. It wasn't an exact replica. But, an unimpressive Caucasian man in glasses? Yeah. So, if DC is actually willing to show some respect for Linda Danvers (whom, to be clear, does not appear in this issue), then I will be ecstatic.
Otherwise, the artwork was a grunge style more appropriate for Lobo than for Wonder Woman. He used a lot of his usual terminology. "Main Man" and all that shiz. I absolutely despised the ultra-violence and irreverence of Lobo in his heyday, the early-to-mid-90s, so I am very happy with him being defeated. I just wish DC would never let him appear again. The only way I can tolerate him is the way he appeared at the tail end of an episode of Superman, showing up to court Maxima as a joke at the end of the episode.
(breathe) I’m not entirely sure where to begin with this one. On its own, I actually enjoyed the story; especially the Lobo-centric elements. Joëlle Jones captures Lobo’s voice incredibly well, and the tone felt true to his character and overall mythos. Where things felt off for me was Wonder Woman’s characterization and the context of the fight itself. This issue reads far more like a standalone Lobo comic than a meaningful installment in the DC K.O. event. Don’t get me wrong, I love Lobo, and I’ll always pick up a story featuring him. But the tone and structure here just didn’t quite mesh with the event’s larger narrative. Honestly, this made me wish we did get a series of one-shots where Lobo brawls with different DC heroes in all the chaotic, quirky, over-the-top ways he’s known for. That style is fun, but it doesn’t really fit within DC K.O.’s framework. Still, if you’re a Lobo fan, there’s plenty to enjoy. Grade: B-
This is a fight that would be brutal: this version of the fight made me wonder what would happen if it was not 'best 2/3' format that DC K.O. AF are following. Lobo (L) would (on paper) seem to have the upper hand; but WW is a not someone you would want to mess with! In the end WW would find a way to get the upper hand (just my opinion). Looking forward to more books in this series!
I’m not sure this was a satisfying win for Wonder Woman. I don’t think by any stretch that Lobo should have won instead, but it almost feels like Wonder Woman won by forces outside of herself, instead of being good enough on her own, which she is.
My favorite of the fight books so far, this one delivers on the promise and premise of DC characters duking it out in fun ways. Great to see Joëlle Jones return to Yara Flor and the rest of the Wonder Girls, if too briefly.
Really fun match up and trendy fights like Slap and car jitsu haha. Lobo dominated Wonder Woman tho, losing by a technicality. Fun issue. Wonder Woman, at least I expect, will probably be shown more powerful in the next one. Feels here she survived rather than beat him.
kinda gave me the ick. maybe each should have fought someone else. Lobo's comments got pretty gross and it felt like his personality was the one that came through the most, and not Wonder Woman's. art was pretty good, but didn't love the bringing back of *that* Lobo - y'all know which one.
