Rate this book
Follow the history of an autonomous American movement, the Restoration Movement, from its early inception to its current status in America today. You will learn of the European influences on the leaders of the movement as well as the importance of such men as James O'Kelly, Rice Haggard, Barton W. Stone, Thomas Campbell, Alexander Campbell, and Walter Scott. Discover the significance of the Cane Ridge Revival, Thomas Campbell's Declaration and Address, and Alexander Campbell's Sermon on the Law. You will learn of the exciting expansion and early growth of the movement, the roots of the controversies and divisions, and the status of the existing churches today. For several years, Dr. Garrett has been diligently researching and compiling additional information for this expanded edition. The following are some of the changes that have been made in this new • Better coverage of the European influences on the early leaders.• Clearer explanation of the theory that "Restorationism Divides."• A fuller discussion of the seemingly opposing goals of "Restoration and Unity."• New material on women pioneers in the Movement.• The last chapter in the previous edition has been expanded into four new chapters, reflecting more recent developments among the three major groups.• A new chapter on "The Movement Faces the 21st Century."• Updated material includes information on the Boston Church of Christ, the Disciples of Christ Renewal Movement, and the inerrancy dispute among the independent Christian Churches. This revised and expanded version of The Stone-Campbell Movement, The Story of the American Restoration Movement now provides an extensive, but readable history of a movement whose main desire was to unite all Christians.Leroy Garrett, Ph.D., currently lives in active retirement in Denton, Texas. After graduating from Abilene Christian University and Princeton Seminary, he earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He has taught philosophy, history and religion at several colleges, including Bethany, Texas Woman's University, and Dallas Christian College. He also edited Restoration Review for forty years, which circulated widely throughout the Restoration Movement. He has lectured at colleges and churches of all three traditions of the Movement and has served on executive committee of both the World Convention of Churches of Christ and European Evangelistic Society. In 1993, he received the Distinguished Christian Service Award from Pepperdine University.__________No one can match Leroy Garrett's intimate knowledge of our movement's three major branches gained through years of study and personal experience. No one interested in our history and current status can afford to miss this important work. Douglas A. Foster, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Church History Abilene Christian University Director, Center for Restoration StudiesThis substantially revised edition of Leroy Garrett's anecdotal history has bettered the first edition, which I would have thought difficult to do. This anecdotal history is written in an easy-to-read style and its vision of history is very well-balanced. . . . This new edition is a marvelous contribution and a necessary addition to the body of knowledge about the heritage of the Stone-Campbell Movement. David McWhirter Director of Library and Archives Disciples of Christ Historical SocietyLeroy Garrett is a thoughtful and thought-provoking scholar. This book is a penetrating treatment of an increasingly complex development.
