Hiding for the Holidays

Rate this book
This Christmas, all she wanted was to disappear. What she found was three men who refused to let her.

I came to Silent Pines with nothing but a fake name, a heart full of grief, and a suitcase full of fear.

I wasn’t planning to stay. I wasn’t planning on being seen. And I definitely wasn’t planning to walk into a rundown gym and meet three ex-military men who see straight through me.

They notice the bruises I try to hide.
They sense the fear I carry like a second skin.

They see the heartache I carry from losing my mother.
And they make one thing clear, if anyone comes for me, they’ll have to go through them.

But secrets don’t stay buried in small towns. And when my true identity is discovered, even twinkle lights and holiday cheer can’t disguise the danger looking for me.

I didn’t come here looking for help, I was just looking for somewhere to stay while I made a few bucks.
But this Christmas… maybe I’ve finally found somewhere I’m safe, somewhere to call home.

Maybe I’ve finally found them.

Now, I have read a lot of awful books.
This one puts most of them to shame.
It’s pointless, ridiculous, and my only enjoyment was in documenting how bad it is.

It lost its first star for the characters casually using ChatGPT like it’s a simple search engine and not a major catalyst in the global desecration of resources, generational capability, and intelligence.

Maybe it’s to blame for the way she switches tense enough for it to be off-putting.

Like: “The equipment is everywhere. It was a mess.”
And: “I have a feeling he’s different. At least it’s what I hoped.”
Is this now or before? It can’t be both.

There are also drawn out sentences and descriptions that would hit better if they just got to the point.
“He bent down and whispered the last part in my ear.”
Just ruins any ominous overtone by emphasizing the obvious.
“He bent and hissed in my ear” would be better.
Just as abrupt as the bad guy’s ensuing words, that we shouldn’t be aware are the ‘last ones’ yet.

There are continuity errors, too.
Leo reaffirms whether her cut was actually an accident, when he wasn’t there when she told the other guys that it had been in the first place.
He should’ve been the one to ask what happened anyway, being a medic and all.

I genuinely thought this was an omegaverse for a substantial amount of time.
They all perfectly fit the OTT alpha and wittle omega who needs protection personas.
The only thing that tipped me off was the lack of attractive smells.

One guy sees the bruises on her neck and blacks out in fury, breaking from their conversation to go to town on the punching bag a couple feet away, imagining it’s the guy who hurt her.
Oh, it gave me the ick so badly.

It’s like that meme where guys say they’ll fight their girlfriend’s uterus because it’s hurting her by giving her cramps.

Also, I can’t believe these guys had even a single gym member before she showed up.
They’re so dumb that her average knowledge makes her look like a genius in comparison.

“Oh… the machines should be organized by workout type and not scattered indiscriminately throughout the space?”
Yeah, dummy!

And then a 36 year old man thinks, ‘… trying not to get upset. Does she like him more than she likes me?’
Again. 36 years old.

It’s all very unserious, but unfortunately not in an intentional ‘ha ha’ way.
The spice sticks to that silly theme. Yeesh.

I swear it’s an omegaverse that just doesn’t realize that it is one.

It would also be super heartbreaking if she weren’t interested in them back.
Just more men getting to know her and taking care of her in exchange for their own personal gain.

Can’t forget my favorite line, uttered in complete seriousness, “And that’s how you ended up here, working on the holiday train and living at the crack house.”

Incredible.

She’s thirty one years old and runs crying like a child when some women make a catty remark about her weight.

As someone of the same age, who has a similar past to the FMC, their comments are absolutely nothing in comparison.

With the amount of righteous anger that idiot should be implementing, it’s the women who should be running.

It ends as anticlimactically idiotic as it was spent.

“𝐖𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞, 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐞. 𝐖𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮.”

i can always count on Shona Knight for a good hurt/comfort book. and add in the Christmas/winter vibes and it’s a perfect combination for this time of year 🤍

Grant, Asher, and Leo are three men obsessed with Rosie/Clara and just want to help her and let her know that she can trust them, especially with her heart. though they’re ex-military, they weren’t like Navy Seals or Rangers, and just some retired military guys trying to make their gym more profitable post military career. HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean they won’t do what they need to do to protect Rosie. i do appreciate the ending and how they handled her ex.

you also got to see them all take Rosie out on dates and develop individual relationships with her. especially since the men have never shared before and never thought they would share.

an enjoyable read and perfect for the winter/holiday season.

3.5 stars: This is a very decent story, one that offers slight angst, a heroine, who has been on the run from her abusive ex and three gentlemen, who happen to have a good heart and assist those in need.

I thought that the author did a good job at portraying the consequences of an abusive relationship alongside the long path of recovery and the struggle yo allow yourself to trust others. The FMC is quite vulnerable and as more of her past has been revealed, it becomes apparent that despite the hardship and danger, she was strong enough to fight for her life and escape from the toxic environment. The MMCs here were nice, caring and patient. However, they did blend in a bit for me.

What I did struggle a bit with was that things just happened between the three of them, the did have a conversation about having an unconventional relationship, but for a female who has been through so much, to be so quickly open to something like this... just did not feel quite right. If it were a PNR, I could easily understand that to an extent, but here I think more time was needed for her to get around the possibility.

Overall, this was a pleasant story to follow, nice Christmas epilogue as well. Hope other readers enjoy the story.

I was looking for a good why choose Christmas romance, and this one looked promising with the suspense involved. Nothing about this was really that special. There were a lot of things repeated by the heroine that a good editor should have caught. The romance was fine, nothing too exciting, and the suspense was over so fast at the end. I didn't love or need the villain's POV thrown in at the end either. I just wanted more plot and depth to this one that I didn't get.

This was a cosy holiday romance, following Rosalie on the run from her abusive stalker ex, and landing in Silent Pines.
She struggles, but she survives, and fate leads her to a gym where she meets owners Asher, Leo and Grant. They see her pain, her strength, and her vulnerability, and now she has 3 fiercely protective ex-military hunks that will do anything to keep her safe, and show her how perfect she is.
As they work together, live together and guard her, they each fall hard for Rosalie and realise their dilemma, luckily they come to a surprise and spicy compromise.
This stort is filled with a charming festive atmosphere, tackles grief and loss in a raw and honest way, and is an uplifting love story.

Hiding for the Holidays was a fun, cozy RH holiday read with some great spicy moments sprinkled in. The steam absolutely delivered, and the wintery small-town vibes were super cute.

I did struggle a bit to connect with the characters gthough. At times the MMCs blended together for me, and I found myself wanting a little more depth or distinction between their personalities. Because of that, I didn’t feel as invested in the emotional side of the romance.

Still, this was an enjoyable, easy read with solid spice and a festive vibe. If you’re looking for something quick, steamy, and holiday-sweet, this one delivers on that front.

Found this book randomly on a tktk video that had only a few snippets of it and immediately went to download it. I devoured this book, seriously, I could not stop reading, I read till 2am and had to force myself to stop. It was exactly what I needed, a why choose with 3 protective and obsessed men that would burn the world down for her, all that during Christmas? Yeah, I was sold. Loved the story, the characters, and wish it was longer. I will definitely check this author's other books, I enjoyed the vibe and writing style.

I know the author lost her mother recently and she wrote this book for her and her love for Christmas. I wish I could rate this higher for that reason alone. But this story had so much potential, but it fell flat for me.

The writing is average. There were a few phrases that were over used and a couple pronoun typos.

Spoilers:

Why choose characters need more descriptive traits to help the readers to remember who is who. I couldn’t tell you what color hair the three men have. Does one have dimples, a scar or a certain scent? Half way through I was still trying to connect the names with the character. They fought numerous tours in the marines but none of them struggle from PTSD? Injuries? Adding these elements would have given more depth to the characters. They felt made up; loving Christmas movies, baking, don’t play video games, and had no jealous issues to overcome with sharing her?

The FMC comes off naive but was 31 years old.

When dealing with the ex it felt very anticlimactic. How did he die? How was the body disposed to where he’ll never be found? They told cops he ran off. Uh ya that’s not going to work.

If you take out the spicy scenes this is a fluffy, surface level, YA Christmas tale.

More like 2.5 stars.
I was shocked when I realized that this book was written by the same author as one of my recent 5 star reads, Stranded, because it was such a difference in quality. There was a lot of repetition that an experienced RH author typically handles with more finesse. I should not be reading the story about how her mom died of cancer 3 separate times. Even if it’s not unrealistic that she had the conversation with each of them individually, it is not good writing. The men weren’t very developed and at times the FMC didn’t have clear motivations. Trauma can mess with you but FMC could never articulate why she wouldn’t tell her new bosses and friends her situation. I originally appreciated that FMC was “older” at 31 but her behavior and surprise at very normal things made her behavior seem more early 20s.
Also the men said insane things immediately upon meeting FMC that had me physically cringing.

This is probably a 2-2.5 ⭐ read but I'm going to be generous and round to 3 because ive been feeling like I'm going into a slump and this is the only thing that has actually held my attention and Im grateful for that.

BTW this review will have spoilers my phone won't let me hit the spoilers button so be aware

I love reading romance but have a hard time really connecting to romance stories. Specifically romances set in the real world. I tend to be more lenient with romantasy since it's in a fantasy world but if it's our world I want more realistic relationships. And not meaning the amount of people but the actual people themselves.

I didn't understand the MMCs original attraction to the FMC. It felt like instant lust which I'm not a fan of. if it started off with one and the other gradually liking her as well I would have liked it a little better but all 3 immediately fell and very hard.

They themselves were questionable. I thought it was ironic that they talk about scott taking advantage when she's in an emotional situation and him doing something illegal (which they were right Scott's an asshole) when they also kinda take advantage of her being in an emotional situation and then asher doing something illegal.

While they had good intentions they were stalking her, as bosses they were sexually harassing her.I didn't like how quickly she became dependent on them either. They employee her so they are her source of income and when they found out she had another job they immediately told her she should quit. They ask her to move in after not even a month and she rightfully says no and then one breaks her door off the hinges and says oh no well you can't live here now there's no door and now she's living with them. She doesn't seem to get much privacy since one of them is with her at all times and again j do understand they had good intentions with everything they were doing I just didn't care for the execution.

I also wish the characters were built up better. I thought it was stupid that they didn't think to organize the gym equipment with their backgrounds. They were in the army for 10 years and none seem to have any issues. I think it would have been nice if she was helping at least one of them also heal in some type of way. I was expecting the FMC to be more hesitant jumping into another relationship while on the run or showing trauma in the new relationship. when they talk about scott love bombing I was expecting her to thinks about how the MMCs were buying her presents and being very overly nice and wondering if they would eventually change but she is very trusting of these gorilla men which I didn't think was realistic but that could just be my view based on my personal experiences.

The ending also felt very anticlimactic. I wanted specifics about what happened to Scott and what was the aftermath for Asher. I just expected more to happen after they built it up the whole story.

I do have to say I thought dropping her into some water is a stupid way of trying to kill someone. The writing tries to make him seem super serious about this but after all the effort he went through to track her down and sneak into the gym before actually taking her he had no plan. there was no escape car . he grabbed her in the few seconds she was alone and then tried to slowly kill her like no one was going to follow them

🎶 “There was nowhere for me to stay. But I stayed anyway” 🎶

She came to Silent Pines with a fake name, a broken heart, and more fear than hope. Hiding from her past was the plan until she walked into a small town gym and met three ex military men who saw everything she tried to hide. They promised to protect her, but secrets never stay buried for long, and danger has already found her trail. As Christmas lights glow against the winter dark, she begins to wonder if Silent Pines might be more than a hiding place, it might be home.

“Clara…” Grant says, sounding as if he’s in pain. I open my eyes and see them all staring at me with varying degrees of pain and anger.

“Sweetheart, who did this to you?”

“Please tell us. I need to know you’re not in any danger.”

Clara/Rosie was struggling financially and emotionally, but once she found the gym, she finally had the opportunity to pursue her career in marketing again. It was less about the marketing itself and more about her regaining independence, stability, and freedom, and the guys gave her that. The romance developed quickly, but beyond that, they were careful and attentive. They took care of her, especially Asher, who camped outside her apartment building just to make sure she was safe. He did not like the area she was living in, so his solution was to stay nearby, quietly watching over her. It was his way of being protective, and it worked. When she had a nightmare, he was there for her, and from that moment, they brought her back to their house.

“But we said that this… relationship was just until Scott was dealt with,” I say in confusion.

“Hmm, I guess we did say that. I guess now he’s out of the picture, we can change it.”

Leo and Grant were just as protective as Asher. They wanted to understand what was going on in her life and what she was hiding. They did not like the secrecy, but of course she had to keep parts of her past to herself because she did not know who she could trust. Still, it was clear she felt an attraction to all of them. After running for so long and never feeling safe, she finally found a space where she could breathe and be cared for. Whether it was a good idea to jump back into a relationship with three men after escaping a love-bombing situation is debatable, but it worked for her. In the end, she got engaged, found happiness, and created her version of a family, a relationship dynamic that fit her. She did not have to choose, and they got to protect her. In that sense, I am happy for her.

—*•.¸♡ ★·.·☾ ゚。´OVERALL゚☁︎。`·.·★ ♡¸.•*⋆—

The fact that they disposed of her ex, even though they were retired veterans and supposedly just normal men in a contemporary romance, felt completely random, but I will take it. They did it to make sure she would be safe forever, and in the end she was protected by them. How sweet.

My review:
Day one of knowing her.
“Tomorrow, one of us needs to look through her bag for clues,” Leo says, peeking up from over the monitor.

Day two, they ask AI how to run their failing business.
“How much does a marketing person make, anyway?”
"I’ll ask ChatGPT.” I pull out my phone and type in the question. “It says thirty an hour is more than fair for this area and industry.” I look at him as I ask, “Can we afford it?”

They follow her home, and take turns trailing her and camping outside her door. The woman who already has a stalker and is terrified of being watched.

Asher becomes incensed at the fact that she wears secondhand clothing. I like a bit of caveman jealousy as much as the next reader, but if a man made me give away my clothes just cause another man used to own them, he would no longer be my boyfriend.
“Oh, hell no.” I push to my feet and storm towards her. Her wide eyes watch me as I grab her hand and lead her back upstairs and into my bedroom.
“Uh, Asher? What are we doing in here?” She asks as she takes in my bedroom.
“Did you get that from the secondhand store?” I ask, keeping my eyes on the dresser drawer I’m rummaging through.
“What? Oh, my shirt? Yeah.”
“Take it off,” I tell her as I open another drawer.
“W-what?”
I frown as I turn to look at her. Why does she look so shocked? I run my words back through my head and curse.
“Shit, baby. Sorry, I didn’t mean—” I sigh, and grab the t-shirt I was looking for, a soft plain green one. I open the next drawer and pull out a pair of sweats and turn to her, offering them to her. “I just meant I don’t want you wearing someone else’s shirt.”
“I bought it, so it’s mine.”
“But it belonged to another man. If you are going to wear someone else’s clothes, they belong to one of the three men living in this house. Understand?” I ask, thrusting the clothes into her hands.

The first time Rosalie and Leo have oral sex is in an alley behind a dumpster. That's not a part of the abusive trend, I just find it nasty gross. This wasn't one of those alternative universe Hallmark towns where everyone's rich and well-fed. Rosalie lives in what is "essentially a crackhouse." I guarantee the floor she's kneeling on and the wall he's leaning against are just doused in piss.
This is not the sort of girl you fuck beside a dumpster, especially not for your first time, but saying no to her was going to be difficult, too.
Before I can tell her any of this she shocks me by dropping to her knees and grabbing the front of my pants. I feel my eyes widen as I stare down at her heated face. “Can I taste you, Leo?”
I drop my head back, smacking it against the brick wall as I groan. Have sweeter words ever been spoken? I look back down at her and nod.

Spice: 2.5/5 (explained why below)
Rating: 3/5

I wanted to really love this one but it just didn’t hit that mark for me. Some things were so repetitive it started to make me lose focus. The spice scenes were not drawn out or really in detail. In fact most of them were just oh he thrust in and done lol. It’s what I’d picture a five second lay if this were IRL honestly lol but there were a few scenes with the first being at 59%. It just needs more description to the spice.

The emotional grab through the first half of the book really held my attention and I felt so bad for her. Being in abusive situations, family or relationships, some scenes just seemed so realistic. The whole “if I can’t have you, nobody can” is something I’ve heard more than once many years ago. I think that really reflected the abuse (obviously other than the physical abuse) and stuck out to me the most.

I’ll just say it, how many times must one lick their lips when they’re aroused? Rosie licked her lips so much it was getting weird lol. “She licks her lips…” two sentences later “…and she licks her lips.” Lol Not to forget but really some of the stuff they say is immature for 30-40 year olds.🫣 (not sure how old Asher is since it wasn’t mentioned but 31 Rosalee, 37 Leo, and 42 Grant)

There’s also a few spelling and grammar errors throughout the book.

I’ll recommend this to others though because I just know that some will read this and love everything about it. 😁

I think Shona Knight is going to become a favorite author of mine like seriously I am OBSESSED with the way she writes reverse harem ‼️‼️I have read two of her other rh duets and they were fucking incredible and just for this to be incredible too like yesss I love it . I swear the stereotype of rh is pure freaky and smutty and I hate it because when u have a author like Shona Knight who writes MORE in her books with multiple partners u see how amazing rh really is beyond JUST smut. I absolutely loved this book I read it one day 🥰🥰 , I love how even though this was a holiday romance there was still a story to follow and good romance to follow. Was a little insta-love?? Yes but the way it still felt like a good development of the romance. They all talked , got to know each other , and went on dates like it was the perfect blend to still believe the romance between Rosalie and the guys . My heart broke for Rosalie she is so kind and sweet and strong for everything she did to try and protect her self I love her💕💕 then all the guys how can I not love them??? Grant with his stable presence , Leo with his flirty personality, and Asher with his protectiveness they all came together to just care and love Rosalie and it was adorable. I love all the cute found family moments and the Christmas spirit I just loved this I absolutely did💕💕 .

2.75⭐️

This was an ok read. A very easy read. Finished it in one day. I liked the first 60% more than the last 40%. I didn’t go into this book expecting a masterpiece. Just wanted a fun, easy, spicy read. The spice was kind of meh. Each scene just felt the same.

I like the FMCs background and her story. I enjoyed that she had come from a very rough abusive relationship and was hiding from her ex. She was in tough situations but took the help that was offered to her, worked really hard and built herself a nice little life out of it. All aspects of that were really solid and made the start of the relationship with the 3 MMCs really nice.

The MMCs unfortunately didn’t have much personalities. They all blended together and I wish the author spent a bit of extra time fleshing their characters out a bit more. We know so much about the FMC and her history but very little details of the MMCs outside of them meeting in the military and opening a gym together. Also these guys seemed really clueless on how to run a business they just opened a gym with no plan. 😂😂😂

The MMCs ages range between 30–40 and the FMC is 31, but these characters felt like they were 20 years old. Maybe just the way they were written felt too basic and young. Also the piece of shit ex bf gets a random POV chapter that just threw me off and felt unecessary in the story. Like why are we reading from the POV of this dickhead and the horrible shit he wants to do to the FMC? Just kind of gave me the ick.

Overall an easy but ultimately forgettable read

Hiding for the Holidays is alright. The romance was cute, and very fast-paced. It was insta-lovey. I found a couple issues with the wrong tense being used. It's primarily in present tense but sometimes would switch to past tense. Every time it happened, it took me out of the moment. I also spotted a formatting issue, but it wasn't anything too crazy. This felt pretty lackluster and flat to me.

This did not affect my rating of the book because it is my fault, but I wanted to talk about it anyways. I am not a Christmas person, and I don't normally read holiday themed books, however, I really wanted to try something different... As a surprise to no one, I still do not enjoy holiday stuff. Every time they mentioned baking Christmas cookies or singing Christmas songs or watching Christmas movies or putting up Christmas decorations, I couldn't help but feel that I was being smothered by the ghosts of Christmas. As stated though, it is quite literally my fault, so I am not docking any points for that. My bad.

Rosalie is in the run from her abusive ex, living in a room, and barely making ends meet when she runs into Leo. Later, she sees a flyer for self defense lessons. At the gym, she sees Leo and his two roommates, Asher and Grant. They offer her a job and soon, they realize she needs help. Sparks fly, and they all want to date her. But her ex is still lurking and wants her back - can they protect her while dealing with their growing feelings?

This was a great holiday, protector romance. All of the guys were instantly drawn to her, and noticed her bruises right away. Their protectiveness made her feel safe again, and I love how they took care of her. They each had something she needed. She gave them so much as well, and I loved seeing Rosie blossom into her own and gain her confidence back. And the spice? Whew! Plenty of group scenes to heat your Kindle up.

I recommend this if you love protective MMCs, a strong FMC with a heart of gold, and a holiday HEA that will make your heart warm.

This book was really hard to read, I wanted to like it, but the teacher in me started grading it like a high school paper about 6% in.

I didn’t add all my highlights just some throughout the book but it’s just to show the book was not edited and made it hard to read and enjoy the story. Proper grammar in published books is a huge deal for me and I cannot get past the errors when there are so many so frequently.

The character’s personality’s were lacking, the MFC was in her 30’s but seemed more like a teenager in her behavior and inner dialogue.

The end seemed rushed and the way the ex was dealt with was odd and rushed. It just seemed like it was thrown together and not thought out.

This was the first and probably the last book by this author that I’ll be reading.

A smoldering holiday romance with enough spice to put in my holiday baking.

I adore why-choose romances, but I'm someone who is EASILY able to pick a favorite...normally, this book had me tied up in knots trying to decide who exactly was my favorite (I'm glad that Rosie didn't have to). I love that there was a bit of hesitation before deciding to just share her (it felt honest) and her agreeing whole-heartedly.

Rosie is running from a bad situation and falls right into the arms of some incredible guys who just want to protect her and help her to thrive.

Surprisingly, I liked this a lot!! Was it a literary work of art? No. Was it just what I was craving? Yes! I mean, what’s not to like? We get three hot, alpha, protective and possessive guys, a damsel in distress, Christmas and small town vibes, scorching spice and sugary sweetness. I also liked the fact that the guys had never shared a woman before and initially all went for the h separately. Even though it dealt with some heavier topics as well, this was mostly a feel good story. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Safety:
- No OW
- OM: h’s abusive ex wants her back and is after her. Hs deal with him in the end.
- No cheating (this is RH, so h is with 3 guys, but there is no real jealousy)
- No separation / no third act break up
- Deals with physical abuse and loss of loved one
- Mentions cancer

I thought the book was pretty good, it would have been a five star read but i just think it should have been a little longer and have more storyline with her abusive ex's. Just a little bit more action and more show than tell. I know I will definitely read more from this author, I know I read 1 or 2 other books by this author, I just can't remember off the top of my head.

A cute insta love Christmas romance between Rosie and her three men Grant, Asher and Leo. She finds herself in need of hiding out in a small town and lands in the laps of these three ex military men who now run a gym. To be honest there was a lot of moments where I either rolled my eyes or thought *bullshit* BUT it was such a cute, easy read that I read it in one go. The storyline wasn't too bad but the overall story was sweet plus I loved the characters😇😏

a little underwhelming?

Overall story was okay, some sweet moments but the pacing was weird, and it was very insta lust/lovey 😭

I felt like it was missing something
The whole Scott situation was strange? I’m not sure how to explain it but it was lacklustre imo

I'm always a sucker for fmc in hiding storyline, so this with a dash of holiday cheer + super protective group of guys had me kicking my feet in delight. really enjoyed.

I loved this book so much omg! They were all so sweet to her and the love they shared was so good. And I love the karma that came to her ex. Great job!
