Journey Into the Gate: Star Wars Scale with Dune Depth
Journey Into the Gate is an amazing novel of truly epic scale. Author Pam Allen has laid out a universe so vast and intricately detailed, it spans not just worlds but galaxies (and perhaps more), immediately pushing the boundaries of what a grand space opera can be. The world-building here is second to none: richly complex with deep backstory and compelling ancient history that informs every conflict with layers of detail.
The story follows Captain Elendril and the crew of the Solar Destiny. Along with scattered bands of rebels, they fight against the tyrannical Itherian Empire. This brutal, galaxy-spanning regime is not only oppressing people but slowly destroying the planets they rule by ruthlessly stripping them of resources. The Itherian Empire itself, with its central, ruthless Emperor and overwhelming military force, immediately brings to mind the Empire from Star Wars. Opposite the Empire is a loose collection of planets and rebels who silently push back in whatever way they can.
Elendril and his crew embody the best kind of resistance. They are morally grey rebels operating in the style of Robin Hood mixed with the highwaymen of old, securing medicine and resources by pirating Imperial freighters to keep people alive and rescue those under the boot of oppression. The rebellion's best hope lies in a secret locked away by the Byni, the advanced people who ruled before the Empire’s rose to power.
