A few weeks ago, I received a surprise ARC of Golden Tangle by Suzanna Fowers. This book is a sequel to Siren's Treasure from the All That Glitters series, but it also works as a standalone. If I recall correctly, Siren's Treasure was quite a bit darker than the other books in the multi-author series, and this book follows suit with action and betrayal on every page. I personally prefer a bit more levity in my books, but if you are looking for a no-spice romantasy that's on the darker side of the spectrum, it just might be perfect for you.
Rapunzel was separated from her family at a young age and transformed into a sucti, a vampire-like creature that absorbs magic from anyone around her. To keep other magic users safe from her parasitic hair, she is kept in a tower, where Circe, the witch who cursed her, claims to be he protector. Circe is absent for most of the book, leaving Rapunzel to stay in the tower of her own free will due to her lack of desire to harm others. One day, a handsome rogue named Valen discovers her powers and agrees to reunite her with her family in exchange for revenge on Circe for using him as a weapon.
Valen falls for Rapunzel quickly, but there is little time for romance in this world of demons and danger. After a tearful reunion with her family, Rapunzel and Valen must determine which of her brothers she can trust and which wishes to use the deadly powers of her hair for personal gain. The magic system in this world is detailed and complex, giving every page a sense of both wonder and terror as people shift into dragons or flow through the air as seafoam on a whim. Rapunzel's powers, which are similar to those of Rogue from X-Men, disrupt their magic, forcing her to claim it as her own.
This was an extremely imaginative story, but I found it difficult to root for the characters because they pretty much all had a secret agenda. Rapunzel was the most virtuous of the lot, but she was cursed to harm anyone who went near her, placing her in a situation where she would be better off staying away from those she cared about. Without spoiling anything, even the epilogue was pretty heavy, providing little sense of relief from the book's dangerous world, and likely setting up the next sequel.
Golden Tangle is a dark and intense fairy tale retelling with a richly imagined world and complex magic system. This book will appeal to fairy tale readers who don't like spice but prefer a darker world with more violence and danger than most of the no-spice fairy tale community writes. It is a unique take on "Rapunzel" that expands upon her moon drop powers from the animated series instead of focusing on the gold healing flower. People who wanted to see more of the "wither and decay" incantation would love this book.

Review:
This was more of a 4.5 star read for me due to the possession aspect of the story as I’m not comfortable with it no matter the book.
Though I overall enjoyed this addition to the Everrgold world! Rapunzel and Valen were a cute couple and I loved the differences between the two of them! Their meet-cute was lots of fun and I liked their second meet cute as well since they had more time to get to know each other! There were also twists to this story that I didn’t see coming that made things really interesting!
I can’t wait to find out more about the last royal sibling and what his story could be!
Summary:
Rapunzel grew up hidden away in a tower with only the Giver – Circe – for a companion. So when her lieutenant comes with a job that could set Valen up for life, it’s almost a no brainer to accept – especially when it includes taking down the family who broke his own. All he has to do is bring Circe’s monster from the tower to the Sylphorian royal family so it can drain their powers and make way for Circe to return from her prison. But it was failed to be mentioned that Circe’s monster was a sweet girl who hadn’t been broken and still believed in goodness in the world.
When truth and lies collide, Rapunzel and Valen have to decide what they are going to believe and fight for moving forward. Because they both have more to lose than they did going into this mission for Circe and neither are sure what path will help protect it best…

I received a ARC copy of this book from the author and WANTED to post my honest, voluntary impression I had after reading it even though a review wasn’t required.
Suzanna has written a epic story that will keep you reading into the wee hours of the morning because you don’t want to put it down!
This is a retelling of Rapunzel and believe me the witch who imprisons Rapunzel for 10 years keeping her isolated from everyone and brainwashing her since she kidnapped her at eight years old is one of the most vile inhuman monsters you’ll ever read!
Rapunzel lives alone in her tower but she finds she can escape by using her hair to climb down but the town folk are afraid of her but she craves human contact even though she knows she’s a monster. She still tries to help the ungrateful people of her town in spite of their hatred for her. Then a smooth talking guy shows up with an agenda to use the monster in the tower and much to his surprise it turns out to be the young woman he witnessed doing something incredible.
He convinces her to join him in returning to her home and join him in taking revenge against her brothers who live there- the oldest who is scheduled to be crowned king shortly.
While there Rapunzel makes some startling discoveries but it takes a long time to realize her giver is not who she always believed her to be!Deceptions are everywhere and the curse of the giver taints everyone there! Allies will surprise you with a despicable villain and his henchman around to
thwart our heroes at every turn! You will love to hate these two villains who are determined to resurrect one of them so she can rule the kingdom and then expand it to encompass more territories!
This story will fascinate and pull you into the plot and you will soon find you in a battle that looks winnable on the outset to despair the next!
I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend this book as one all lovers of romance/ action/ adventure and intrigue will enjoy! There are so many revelations as you read this book it’ll make you start to second guess yourself as you get deeper and deeper into the story.
This is a story you don’t want to miss- believe me!

Golden Tangle is an amazing retelling of Rapunzel that I really enjoyed!
This is part of the Everrgold series by Suzanna Fowers. The first book in this series is Siren’s Treasure, which I read last year. I did enjoy Siren’s Treasure, but I got a little hung up on the love at first sight part of the story. That is not my favorite storyline in the world. Because of this I was a little hesitant going into this book, and I am so glad I read it!
I did not reread the first before I started this one and I wish I had. Usually I would, but for whatever reason this time I did not. I do think it’s beneficial to read the first book before this one. It gives so much context to the story and helps set up the world. Also, the main characters in the first book are prominent characters in this book.
There was love at first sight in this book, but it was nicely done. The characters still took the time to get to know each other, which I appreciated. I actually really loved the romance- it was sweet and wholesome. Rapunzel and Valen were adorable together and I loved the way they cared for each other.
Rapunzel was an interesting character. When I first heard about this book, I was expecting her to be bitter. That was not the case. She was so kind and loving! She reminded me of the Disney Rapunzel with how much she loved life. She went through a lot of challenges. I kept wanting to tell her Circe isn’t who she thought she was. I also loved how much she cared for those around her! She had every right to be mad at her family, but she just genuinely cared for them.
I also loved how her hair was magic in a new and different way. Her hair was the curse, which I found fascinating! It also had a mind of its own and it reminded me of Entrapta from the new She-Ra.
Valen was an amazing character! I loved his magic and how it was used against him (some of the best parts of the book). His magic was super unique and not something I necessarily see in a lot of books. It shaped the story in unique ways and allowed for Valen to acknowledge his true feelings. He started as a very gruff character but quickly became a protective character that I just adored. I loved his character growth and how he comes to care for and protect Rapunzel.
There was a dog! I love dogs so much, and I wish they were in more books. I loved Ripper so much! He was an adopted street fighter, and I loved how much Rapunzel and Valen care for him. He was a central part of the story, and I am very glad that he wasn’t forgotten.
Raggon, Thessa, and Tobias are central parts of the story. I loved Thessa and Valen’s interactions. I don’t quite know why, but I liked how they fit into the family and were fighting to save the family. Raggon went through some things this book let me tell you! I hope in the next book we get Raggon a little saner. Tobias is an amazing character, and I love him so much! He is just so accepting and welcomes Rapunzel home with open arms. I was so sad with how the book ended for him, and I can’t wait for his story to be released.
Speaking of Tobias, there is this giant monster living in the moat, whose name is Thassalor, but Tobias calls him Puppy! I love it so much, because I am also that person who sees some massive animal and goes “Puppy!”
There was a fake marriage storyline, with a fake baby! I am a sucker for fake dating/marriage, so I loved seeing this trope make an appearance. The fake baby was just a cherry on top!
The magic in this book was fascinating and well developed. It was really well done and nicely built into the culture and world.
There was a revenge storyline, though that felt a little flimsy to me. This storyline was strongest for Valen, but even then, it was in the background. I think it was supposed to be strong motivator for Rapunzel, but it fell flat for me.

The Giver has gone missing forcing Rapunzel to leave her tower. She knows the rumors that float around the village about Circe’s beast locked in the tower. Rumors that she knows are correct because she is the monster. Her sucti nature is the reason The Giver, also known as the witch Circe, hid her in the tower, to protect her from the family that tried to execute her for being what she is. Rapunzel has ventured outside the tower before, usually getting screamed at or some other horrible result, but she just can’t sit by when she hears the screams from the villagers. Shadows have been infesting Everrgold and she has the ability to protect others from them. Also, she needs supplies. This venture outside the tower is different than before due to the man she met in town that couldn’t keep his eyes off of her. Her daydreaming about leaving her lonely tower becomes reality when the same man happens to climb her tower. Valen knows he is being used, has known since Circe took him in and practically tortured him in her cold palace. Despite her being banished by Posiden these last 3 months he can still feels her chains being used by her minions and followers. He is tasked with taming the beast in the tower, the one that steals souls and magic. He doubts his Soul Leashing magic will affect this beast but the one thing driving Valen is dangled in front of him, vengeance to the Sylphorian family. The need for vengeance wins out but what he didn’t expect to find was the blonde, honey-eyed girl from town. He quickly realizes there is more than what the rumors say surrounding Rapunzel and he has a sinking feeling that Circe has so much more planned for her.
A dark retelling of Rapunzel steeped in Greek mythology. Something I didn’t know I needed until I read this. Yes, it is dark and I would recommend knowing triggers before reading this but it isn’t spicy/explicit just grim. Both of these main characters have been through some massive emotional and psychological manipulation which makes seeing the truth so much harder for them. Valen realizes it way sooner which gives him his own morally gray issues to struggle with. Rapunzel is a weird mix of innocence and reality. She was raised around Circe and knows there is evil but she still has a naivety about her from her isolation. I love the dynamics of the Sylphorian family and that even though book one wrapped up Raggon’s story there are hidden layers that still need to be dealt with. The family was way more involved than I realized when I started the book and wish I had done a re-read of book 1 but it is still readable on its own. The author does a great job of recapping the needed information to where I wasn’t completely lost. As for Tobias, you know his book is next and I wonder what direction in the tales the author will use. I am looking forward to his book and what dark direction she will take with it.
A dark retelling of Rapunzel steeped in Greek mythology. Something I didn’t know I needed until I read this. Yes, it is dark and I would recommend knowing triggers before reading this but it isn’t spicy/explicit just grim. Both of these main characters have been through some massive emotional and psychological manipulation which makes seeing the truth so much harder for them. Valen realizes it way sooner which gives him his own morally gray issues to struggle with. Rapunzel is a weird mix of innocence and reality. She was raised around Circe and knows there is evil but she still has a naivety about her from her isolation. I love the dynamics of the Sylphorian family and that even though book one wrapped up Raggon’s story there are hidden layers that still need to be dealt with. What an enveloping story! This is the second in the Evergold series and picks up closely after Siren’s Treasure.
I felt for both Rapunzel and Valen! They had such tragedy in their lives and all of their choices were colored by their past. Rapunzel was so earnest. I loved seeing the world through her eyes. She was searching for her place and for answers to the shadows that plagued her. Rapunzel desperately wanted to find connection and had such natural giving nature. This was both her strength and also led to some struggles for her. I loved seeing her find her family and connect with them.
I also adored Rapunzel and Valen’s connection. It was so immediate, but they also grew together as they journeyed. Valen was a bit stuck as he was forced into plot with Rapunzel. He was jaded and seeking revenge. However, the longer he spent with Rapunzel and the more secrets that were uncovered, the more uncertain he became about what he truly wanted. Valen was discovering who he could be and it was so exciting to see his growth.
It did take me a moment to really enter the world created. I felt like I was trying to get my bearings amidst the magic and action. However, once I got into the story, I was hooked! I loved the way that magic is throughout the world and the new ways it was showcased within this book. There were secrets, plots, and romance! It was up to the last few chapters that everything was revealed. I loved getting to see old characters again and the continuation of their stories. This is a fairytale inspired fantasy romance with some fantasy violence, darker elements and only kisses.

I'll be honest, I kinda loved everything about this retelling!
Vallen and Raechelle (Rapunzel) are so dang adorable
together! And Vallen is literally what I could envision
Flynn Rider being if Disney had gotten a bit darker and more
in the fantastical in it's retelling. And speaking of Disney, I
loved the subtle and not so subtle references to Tangled,
because let's be real, there's definitely some stark similaritiesbetween the two. I also loved just how fun of a read this bookwas, even with the darker elements. I also really liked that
Raggon, Tobias, and Morris are all back, and how they all are still battling Circe's influence in different ways. And then how they all pull together to get rid of her... For now. All of which,
leaves me entirely intrigued with how they all intend to free
Tobias and end Circe's reign of terror for good. I'm definitely looking forward to the potential last book! But overall, I loved this retelling-it was different, fun, a bit gut-wretching at times, and 100% worth the read!

This book was a great take on the Rapunzel fairytale. Rapunzel (aka Raechelle) is kind, sweet, earnest and lovely. Valen is charming, clever, protective, and driven. Ripper stole the show for me as did Thalassor. The interactions between the main characters were funny, sweet, and thoughtful. I appreciated the author’s discussion about abuse, gaslighting, and deciding to pivot when your desires and needs change. It was great seeing familiar faces again from the previous book in the series. Alaistair and Circe were indeed very deserving of stepping on millions of Legos, and I wanted to hug Valen and Raechelle multiple times as I read their story. Overall, if you like fairytale retellings, references to Ancient Greek mythology, cute dogs, and sweet fantasy romance with no spice, then I would highly recommend this book. I got a copy of this book and these opinions are my own.

I love fairytale retellings, especially unique ones - Golden Tangle is exactly that! The series aspect - especially with the common villain across books - gives the story a unique flair!
I loved the balance between elements of the original Rapunzel story and new inclusions. I loved that the story felt familiar - a tower, the long hair, the MMC climbing up to Rapunzel - without feeling trite. Rapunzel’s magic being part of what isolated her was a really interesting spin!
The magic system is really well constructed- it’s original while also having clear ties to folklore and myth. It made it feel both intriguing and immersive.
The prose is very elaborate; it’s very beautiful to read without quite straying into purple prose territory. It made this retelling of Rapunzel feel fancy while also being very readable!

I received an ARC copy, and this is my honest review. This book is a clever mash-up of Rapunzel and Greek mythology (Circe, Poisedon) and is a sequel to Siren’s Treasure, which I loved! This book is much darker and way more violent, but it is a clean read and does not graphically portray the violence. I enjoyed seeing the clean romance between Valen and Rapunzel (Raechelle). I enjoyed the book, but I probably would not let my younger daughters read it until they are a little older. I look forward to reading the next book in the series which it alludes to. I gave it only 4 stars because it is much darker than what I prefer reading.

I really enjoyed this book! In my opinion you will get the most out of the book if you read Sirens Treasure first, but it is still enjoyable without reading that one first. Although there are some spoilers for Siren's Treasure in this book. I loved seeing Valen and Rapunzel grow both individually and together. There was no gory violence, no swearing and a level 2 intimacy. This was a great adventure that had twists and turns that kept it interesting and engaging. I did receive an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

A fantastic addition to the world built in Sirens Treasure. These characters each had their own unique twist from the original tale to make for a delightful mix of banter, high takes, and renewed hope! Though this is a standalone, it encompasses the characters we met in Sirens Treasure while still centering around the main characters. The character arcs were carefully crafted to keep me on the edge of my seat until the very end!

I couldn't put this book down. I loved reading every bit of it as it pulled me through a wide range of emotions. I laughed, I cried, I swooned, and more.
The world is amazing. The characters are well rounded. The romance is sweet. The plot was fast paced and interesting.

Ok, so how best to describe the genre of this book? I would describe this book as a mix between a fairy tale, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Van Helsing. If you are expecting a sweet fairy tale retelling, this is not it. If you like darker themes that include monsters and such, you will enjoy this. I enjoyed the characters and plot for the most part. I felt like the story dragged at some parts and wasn’t sure what exactly was going on in others. However, there was some mystery and intrigue that keeps a reader wondering what will happen and how is this problem going to be resolved. So, because of that I gave it a 3.5 ⭐️ rating. I would go lower because I don’t prefer the darker themes, but another reader might really get into it.

This was really good storytelling. I really enjoyed the writing. The characters were well flushed out. The storylines with the previous book matched really well. Overall, I enjoyed every part of this book. This book does deal a lot in shadows and dark magic and trauma from certain magical type people’s families being killed on the order of the royal family. I do like the theme of this book and learning to trust yourself and find yourself and remember who you are and while we have some dark days there will always be better ones ahead. The ending of the book does resolve a lot of things and then set up well for the next book, but it wasn’t like a oh wow that was a cool ending. It was a big battle at the ending and it was a good battle, but yes, it does deal with a lot of deception and dark shadows. I would recommend this to anyone who does like dark fairytale retellings.
