About the author

Brynn Danu

2 books24 followers
Brynn Danu is a bit of an underdog in the book community. Having worked as a ghostwriter for well over a decade, she is an experienced author with a love for poetry, stage plays, folklore and epic stories. With her high fantasy release Legend of Gardyan Book 1: Sign of the Raven, she finally has made her debut in 2025, Book 2: Sign of the Owl to follow in October 2026.

Brynn's unique writing style breaks with established stereotypes in the fantasy book sphere. Her narration combines dark fantasy and folklore elements with epic worldbuilding, horror, historical fiction, mature romance and a rich layer of poetry. In that regard, the Afro-German word sorceress aspires to continue a legacy closely related to her own heritage.

Growing up with iconic fairy tales such as those of the Brothers Grimm and oral traditions of West African folklore as well as Norse, Greek, Celtic and Ancient Egyptian mythology, Brynn Danu's narration is more than a standard fantasy. It is reflective, reminiscent, consciliatory and admonishing.

Readers love her books for their refreshing and uncommon apporach that is able to convey deep emotions, lyrical finesse and thought provoking philosophical themes alike. Her work is often compared to that of George R. R. Martin due to the complex multi pov setup and concept of ancient bloodlines within her books. The author herself, however, emphasises that her writing is more of dark fairy tale and ode to legendary animal fables from across the globe.

⚔️ When Power Passes Through Blood🩸

"Sign of the Raven" by Brynn Danu is a dark epic fantasy novel rooted in blood, inheritance, and perilous magic that scars not only the land, but the souls bound to it. The story unfolds with a purposeful pace, allowing power, violence, and consequence to shape the narrative as much as prophecy and fate.

At its heart prowls a mounting horror - a blood cult moving unseen through the realm, and the unraveling mystery of who stands behind it. Told through multiple character arcs, the tension tightens as fractured loyalties and buried histories surface, each revelation sharpening the dread rather than easing it.

The world of Gardyan unfolds across three distinct ands: Rayan, Nemesava, and Ylvsea. Each is shaped by its own atmosphere, mythology, and moral weight. Woven throughout each district is a distinct anamorphic bloodline: the Blood Fox, the Blood Raven, and the Dragon Blood. This magic is ancient, feral, and irrevocable.

Readers drawn to the moral complexity and ferocity found in the works of Andrzej Sapkowski, John Gwynne, and George R.R. Martin will find much to admire in Danu's storytelling. This is a fantasy where power is inherited, violence has weight, and every choice leaves a legacy.

Sign of the Raven by Brynn Danu, the first book in the Legend of Gardyan.

I want to thank Brynn for letting me read this amazing world.❤️

This is an epic dark fantasy. The world building is phenomenal, and it delivers with epic storytelling.

From the prologue to the epilogue, I was falling into a world filled with myth, ancient lore, political alliances, betrayal, and the struggle between fate and free will.

Beneath the wings of the raven, shadows gather...

I enjoyed the writing style. The plot grips, and you have no idea where the twists are coming.

Secrets are coming to light, which house will become victorious? Honour comes in to question😮

I loved the characters. They are well thought out, and somehow, you can't help rooting for all of them. How can you give your allegiance?😅

⚠️ Trigger warnings:
Brutality
Violence
Trauma
Abuse
Psychological torment
Darkness every being carries in their hearts

This world contains everything I love, myths, epic world building, lore seeped so deep you need an encyclopedia for reference, and every magical creature I can think of❤️🥰

This might not be for everyone, but if you love phenomenal world building, myths and legends, and dark fantasy, this might be right up your alley📚

I rated it 3.5 but rounded to 4 for good reads. This is high dark fantasy and heavy in the world building which I am not used to tbh. I still enojoyed the story enough to keep going although I did get confused a few times 😅. There is some dark and intense moments especially towards women so definitely consider that before you read.

Oh my god Sign of the Raven completely blew me away. I am still thinking about that entire journey. Brynn Danu has created a beautiful and rough world with the matriarch. This book is one of the intense and dark fantasies I have read in a long time. The way that each page pulls you in more and ties in the story with each turn is really interesting. It keeps you wanting to know what happens next from the very first page, to the very last page. Sign of the Raven has the story that has kept me on the edge of my seat over a book in a long time. I mean Sign of the Raven is just that good! Once you pick it up you cant put it down.

"Might and wisdom are like two ravens. They always come as a pair. If you fail to exert one with caution, the other will teach you restraint."

In the world of Gardyan, you're brought on a journey that is acutely ghastly. One that delves into the depths of darkness, fear, excruciating violence of betrayal and history that is dismantled. The psychological torment continues, as the lands of Rayan, Nemesava, Ylvsea are represented by each district The Blood Raven, The Dragon blood and The Dragon Fox that are individually going through hardship as the walls cave around them, as tensions are heightened and loyalty is questioned. When unearthly hereos are brought together, their destiny is a fine line of remaining captured or walking free. What will their fate be? The horrowing tales, past and present of mortal and immortal will take you through a labyrinth of emotional depth and true awakening keeping you on the edge of your seat.

"A dimensional rupture had amalgamated two realities into a horrid nightmare."

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, Brynn has a way of capviating and emulating a world like no other, elivating each characters as if you are their with them. The rich History and story building is impeccable and angelic. The backstories, the letters, the combat and conflictions put me in awe and eagerness wanting more nor wanting the story to end. Radu and Aaron their stories reeled and captivated me. You're fully submerged into the chaos, panick stricken Darkness that ravishes you within. The world is beautiful yet so fragile, deepened with the haunted heorines and hereos trying to survive an unfathomable nightmare as archaic curses arouse and debarred magic surfaces and churns. Those strengthened alliances will fault and shattered, trust will be divided. The real question as Ashton Host is surges, what will you do for the ones you love, will you stay flight or fight? Risk it all to gain redemption and control? The fate is in your hands...and time is running out.

"It was like walking through a clouded labyrinth, playing hide and seek with darkness."

I went into this expecting a casual little fantasy read and instead got hit with dragons, ravens, foxes, and massive political drama over a literal triple murder. Immaculate. The absolute best part of this book is how the women literally run the world. they are gorgeous, lethal, and politically terrifying. there’s this one specific scene where a mother is getting ready to absolutely obliterate people in combat while holding her kid? Mother is mothering.the only reason it’s losing a star is because the world-building is heavy. My last two brain cells were fighting for their lives trying to keep track of the multiple POVs, the random time jumps, and the veil between the mortal world and Gardyan. it doesn’t hold your hand at all, so the beginning was a little bit of a struggle.

Unique high fantasy masterpiece!

Sign of the Raven absolutely delivers on immersive, high fantasy world-building! From the very first chapter, I felt dropped into a layered, living world filled with ancient lore, political tension, shifting alliances, and magic that feels both dangerous and deliberate.

The detail in this book is honestly its greatest strength. The cultures, belief systems, and power structures aren’t just mentioned — they’re woven deeply into the story.

The magic system is intricate and rooted in lore rather than convenience, which I appreciated. It demands your attention — this isn’t a “skim and vibe” fantasy. You have to settle in and let the world unfold around you. And once you do? It’s incredibly rewarding.

The strong, badass female characters weren’t just strong — they were strategic, sharp, and unbreakable; they carried grief like armour and still chose courage, and I felt every ounce of that power in my bones

At times, the pacing slows under the weight of the world-building, which is why this sits at a solid 4 stars for me instead of 5. There are sections where the detail slightly overtakes the momentum. But honestly, for high fantasy lovers who crave depth and complexity, that won’t necessarily be a downside.

If you love detailed high fantasy worlds that feel expansive and carefully constructed (think George R. R. Martin) this one is absolutely worth the journey.

I absolutely enjoyed every bit of this story, from the opening prelude right through to the final chapter. The world feels vast, rich, and so thoughtfully built. You can really feel the care put into its lore, magic system, and every little detail in-between!

The mystery and tension hooked me instantly, keeping me on edge and refusing to leave a chapter unfinished. The characters are layered and complex. The female characters especially stood out to me.

The writing is stunning, vivid, and brings every scene to life beautifully. It’s not a quick light read, and was so rewarding to read and more. It was rather refreshing in all honesty.

If you love deep world building, complex characters, and fantasy with darker themes, this one’s for you! I would recommend this to fellow Game of Thrones fans! ⚔️🐉

“Justice knows no rush. It strikes when one least expects, like a rogue aiming for the heart. Like a Raven Blade lives his life.”

5 stars! Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book ✨💖 I loved this book! Can I just talk about the WORLDBUILDING!? Absolutely insane. So well thought out and detailed, I was beyond impressed. The plot was clearly thought through and completely hooking with the element of mystery I loveee 🤭the characterization and development was next level. I loved seeing it all come alive and watching these awesome characters develop in a great way. My favourite element was probably the writing style though, so poetic and meaningful and thoughtful! Highly recommend to all lovers of fantasy, folklore, and epic fantasy. It’s a complex story and hard to follow at times, but the complexity & level of detail definitely made the book and worldbuilding so interesting! Very impressed with this one, as a huge lover of all things fantasy & epic fantasy. Overall, great book! 👏👏

I absolutely loved Sign of the Raven by Brynn Danu. From the very first pages, I felt completely immersed in the story, and by the time I reached the end, I was already looking forward to the next book.

The worldbuilding was my favorite part. Everything felt so vivid without being overexplained, and I never had trouble picturing where the characters were. It genuinely felt like I was exploring the world right alongside the characters.

Even though there are a lot of characters, they never felt confusing. The main Characters are incredibly well-developed, and the supporting characters receive exactly the amount of depth they need to make the story feel rich and believable.

Since this is part of a larger series, the story keeps building and leaves you excited to see what comes next. The ending had me counting down the days until I can continue this journey.

I also loved how bits of history and lore were woven naturally into the story. It adds so much depth to the world without ever feeling like you're sitting through a history lesson.

And yes, there are a few spicy moments sprinkled throughout the book, but they never overshadow the plot—they simply complement the relationships and the story.

If you're looking for a beautifully crafted high fantasy with immersive worldbuilding, unforgettable characters, and a story that keeps you invested from beginning to end, I can't recommend Sign of the Raven enough. Just keep in mind that the story explores some darker and emotionally heavy themes, so it's worth checking the content warnings if you're a sensitive reader.

This is exactly the kind of fantasy that leaves you craving more, and I absolutely can't wait for the next installment.

Inhalt:

(Spoiler- free✨)

The first thing that stood out to me was the world-building guys. Gardyan feels huge, detailed, and very alive. At first I was sooo confused but eventually got along with it. There was clearly so much thought put into the different bloodlines, the history, the politics, and the magic. And again- It's definitely the kind of fantasy that asks for your attention, but once everything starts coming together, it's so rewarding.

Another thing I loved was the writing style. It's very descriptive without feeling overdone. The writing felt naturally beautiful. I think each character is well written. ( Random note: I love Bozani)

I will say that the book can feel overwhelming at times because there's a lot going on, especially in the beginning. There are multiple characters, different lands, bloodlines, and lore to keep track of. But personally, I think the payoff is worth it if you enjoy immersive fantasy.

Sign of the Raven was a strong start to the series and definitely left me excited to continue (even when it took me around 2 months to complete cuz not a good e-reader lol).

Soo, If you love fantasy with rich world-building, dark themes, and beautiful descriptive writing, I'd recommend giving this one a try.

“Sign of the Raven” was my first audiobook ever!
It contains everything you need: magic, dragons, witches, clans and folk stories.

This book is a mix of dark fantasy, horror and even some romance. While listening, I experienced so many emotions - from being scared to being fascinated.

It’s hard to pick just one favorite character, and you’ll find yourself just as invested in the villains as you are in the heroes. The story is so gripping that you’ll want to experience it again and again. It’s the kind of book you never want to end! That’s why I’m so happy there’s a sequel.

Dark, Epic, and Seriously Immersive

If you love high fantasy, rich worldbuilding, court politics, and morally grey characters, Sign of the Raven has A LOT to offer.

Honestly, this book gave me Game of Thrones vibes. The multiple POVs, rival animal bloodlines, political factions, and huge cast of characters definitely reminded me of GoT. But just like GoT, you really have to sit tight and pay attention in the beginning because there is A LOT being thrown at you.

Once I settled into the world, though, I was hooked.

The lore was probably my favorite part. I loved how the ancient myths were woven into the story, and watching the mystery and the growing threat of this apocalyptic army slowly unfold kept me invested. The whole thing felt dark, atmospheric, and incredibly grand.

My only issue was that the worldbuilding could sometimes feel overwhelming. There were moments when I got a little lost trying to piece together all the lore and history, and the story definitely slows down in certain sections because the author takes their time establishing this massive world.

But overall, this is a very ambitious and impressive debut. If you enjoy political fantasy with a huge cast, intricate lore, shifting POVs, and a slower, more meticulous pace, this is definitely worth checking out.

A solid 4 stars from me, and I’m definitely curious to see where book 2 would takes us.

Recommended to readers who enjoy dark, epic fantasy that has distinct complex lands, bloodlines, and epic building tension from page 1. Brynn writes with such heart and passion that you can feel everything building and vividly picture each scene.

There is strong, remarkable female representation in this book, dark themes are explored and it is absolutely stunning inside and out. The covers are incredible and the writing style is so unique that you will be drawn in and fully immersed in the story. This isn't a story you read in a day. This is epic, complex and fantastical. Read with purpose. Read with intention. Brynn develops each and every character, each and every land as well as every bloodline and bit of magic brilliantly. Don't rush through. Savor it.

If Game of Thrones energy is your thing… you need to pick this up.

This is one of those books where you don’t just read it… you step into it.

Sign of the Raven absolutely delivers on immersive, high fantasy world-building in a way that demands your full attention .... and honestly.... I loved that. This is not a “skim and vibe” kind of fantasy. You have to settle in, pay attention, and let the world unfold around you piece by piece.

And once it does? It’s incredibly rewarding.

The world feels layered, lived-in, and intentional. The cultures, belief systems, and power structures aren’t just background noise .... they’re woven directly into the story in a way that makes everything feel heavier, more real, and more dangerous.

The magic system especially stood out to me. It’s rooted in ancient bloodlines .... feral, inherited, and not something that can be used lightly. It feels earned, not convenient, which made every moment of magic hit harder.

And the women in this book?
Strong isn’t even the word. They are strategic, sharp, emotionally scarred, and still choosing to move forward anyway. The kind of strength that isn’t loud .... it’s unbreakable. And I felt that.

There’s also this underlying tension running through the story with political intrigue, fractured loyalties, and a very unsettling blood cult threading everything together. It’s the kind of slow-building dread that keeps you locked in because you KNOW something bigger is coming.

That being said, the pacing does slow at times under the weight of all the detail. There are moments where the world-building slightly overtakes the momentum but that's ok.

If you love expansive, morally complex, high fantasy with depth..... the kind that feels like a full world rather than just a story - this is absolutely worth the journey.

Confession: I trust absolutely no one in this book.

Thank you to the author, Brynn Danu for sending me a copy for my honest review!

Okay but Sign of the Raven?? This is that fantasy that makes you WORK… but in a good way.

From the first chapter, you’re dropped into this massive, layered world ... different lands, cultures, bloodlines, politics .... and it does NOT hold your hand. You have to pay attention. But once it clicks.... Oh it CLICKS.

The magic system is all rooted in blood ... like ancient, dangerous, tied-to-who-you-are magic that actually feels powerful and a little terrifying.

And the whole story is wrapped in political tension, shifting alliances, and this very unsettling blood cult situation happening in the background…so you’re constantly like “who can I trust”.

And the characters...especially the women .....they are strong in that quiet, unbreakable way. Carrying grief, making hard choices, playing the long game… I loved them.

But I will say the pacing can feel a little slow at times because of how detailed everything is. This is not a fast read. This is a sit down, lock in, and absorb it kind of fantasy.

And if you love that and want something immersive, complex, and a little dark....You’re going to eat this up.

Sign of the Raven by Brynn Danu is a dark and immersive fantasy that pulls you into a world filled with ancient magic, powerful bloodlines, and haunting secrets. The atmosphere is rich and mysterious, creating a sense of tension and wonder from beginning to end.

I especially enjoyed the emotional weight of history, trauma, and personal choices. The world-building felt expansive and vivid, with cursed legacies, forbidden magic, and unforgettable characters woven together into a beautifully written story. The darker themes added depth to the narrative and kept me invested in the characters journeys.

The blend of fantasy, mystery, and emotional depth made this a compelling read that I couldn’t put down.

I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes next.
