All their dreams torn asunder. One year after events reshaped Vandress, Kip Dubai balances a precarious dual life. By day, he's a student and young mentor; by night, he leads the growing network of Lumin discovering their extraordinary abilities. The fourteen-year-old must decide whether to remain hidden or step into a dangerous spotlight as a pair of killings leave the Servo District on edge.
Arliss and Meera Dubai fight to preserve the fragile peace they helped forge. While Arliss works within Enforcement Q to protect Blend rights, Meera's ambitions draw her toward a position that could transform their community's future.
Haunted by loss and strange visions, Councilor Ennis Vega delves into forbidden knowledge about the Resonance. His investigation uncovers ancient truths about the Breath that could save the Southern Platte or destroy it. As political rivals sense his weakness, the whispers of the planet intensify.
Mysterious fires erupt across the city - some natural, others unexplainable. Two families face impossible choices that will determine the fate of a world poised on the edge of transformation.
The Rogues of Teton's first trilogy reaches a spectacular conclusion that sets the people of Vandress on a course none could have imagined.
A continuation of the story of the relationship between the 'pure' Tetons and the 'Blends' who have been genetically modified to cope with the adverse conditions on the planet. The central stage now shifts to the hybrid offspring of mixed descent originally known 'Patches' but now known as 'Lumin', who believe themselves to be the 3rd race. There has been an uneasy truce which has led the Blends to be included in running the community and allows the young Blends, led by the leading Lumin, Kip to organise their own facilities. The leader of the 'Pure Breathers' discovers evidence that has shaken his belief in his cause but his mantle is taken up by young extremists led by his son who want to use violent means to return the Blends and Lumin to their original subservient positions. Like the earlier books, each chapter is told from the perspective of one of the major participants enabling the reader to gain insight into their actions and motivations while the story is moved along. It all leads to an exciting climax and a satisfactory ending to this part of the story while leading the way to the final volume.
Blends and Patches are starting to get more rights. But are they really, or are these just ways to make them happy, but not change the societal balance in Sinqin? It’s a slow process, and there is huge internal pushback. The Patches (now Lumin) have been exercising their talents to win people to their side. Will people find out that things are not as simple as they appear, and what about the endgame for both sides? Teton is a fascinating world – a climate tragedy and post-modern society isolated by the harsh conditions of their world and built around “purity” and lies. The characters are well-developed, and we can see their evolution not just as many are growing up (like the Lumins) but also as the institutionalized racism grows and its proponents seek new ways to hold Blends down and keep the status quo.
An excellent addition to this series! The Lumin are coming into their own and the Blends continue their struggle for equality with the Tets (well, mostly the Pure Breathers. What a bunch of jerks!). The Whisper has chosen Roe Vega for a new message - or perhaps it has given him the mantle of his father to pick up? The reader is still not sure what the Resonance's eventual plan is, but it's looking more and more dire for everyone on Teton, which is a bit nerve wracking. I am loving it!
I love the action in this story and the characters' growth arcs are booming. There's an excellent easter egg at the very end if you've read any other series by Kennedy (all of which I highly recommend!) that may lead us somewhere we never expected. I can't wait to see what's next!
Trouble is brewing between the blends and the pure breathers. Blends are being killed but by whom?
Kip is leading the blue skinned people and Arliss is now part of the security force eq
Roe has changed since his marriage and is not nice to his wife. He also is part of a group of young men who think that they know what’s best for their world ie no blue skins.
Ennis has been collecting artefacts and has now as good as kidnapped a scholar to work through his finds and help him figure out if he has been believing the wrong things all his life.
Things are hotting up in Vandress and the outcome is not looking good.
There are multiple strands running through this book which all make for an exciting read.
