When I first saw the premise of this book and the cool book trailer, I just had to have this book. It is available for sale on the author's website but won't be available on other reading platforms until Jan. 20th. I couldn't wait! This book did not disappoint! I've read all of Lolah Lace's released books and her writing style is always enrapturing. With A Constant Reminder, she switched it up on us a little and gave us this book in third person. She usually writes in first person. As a lover of third person, I truly didn't mind that. Don't get me wrong, she pulls me right in when she writes in first person though! I loved this book and I think the title totally fits.

We have our two characters, Roxanne and Adam. When we meet Roxanne, she's a college student who lives a carefree college student life. She changes quickly. Although, I didn't agree with some of her choices, she does what she thinks is right and she actually thinks out her decisions before acting rashly. We meet Adam who is so far gone, dealing with demons, that I wondered how in the world could this guy be redeemed. His poor decisions lands him into something that quickly redeems him, though I don't support anything he did.

The secondary characters were great. Sometimes we get characters who really don't do anything for the story but we did here. If I know Lolah Lace's writing style, I'd say she left some things open that if she wants, she can one day go back and expand on another story.

I did come to love Adam and I felt for him once he was redeemed. His poor decisions landed him in a bad place and I wasn't sure how he was going to come out of it. Roxanne is a good woman and had to learn forgiveness and to just be...and feel!

A Constant Reminder, indeed...

This is not my first read by Lola Lace I have a few of her books but have not read them all yet. I loved Boss Lady by her.

This is Roxanne and Adam's story! This is a love story but not in the traditional sense. In order not to give anything away from the story, I will have to share with you what my reflections/responses are to the book rather than telling you what the story is about. This is an emotional roller-coaster that has to be experienced by every individual for themselves!!!

The book has more than one theme which we have all come across or may have had to deal with in one way or another. The book had me making spiritual parallels. I am a woman of faith and the themes in the book caused me to think about God's forgiveness and redemption verses Man's forgiveness and redemption. Trust me there is a HUGE difference between the two. God's forgiveness/redemption is effortlessly given and can be easily received. Man's forgiveness/redemption can cost you your heart and soul.

I found the story to be very profound and all-consuming! I stayed up until 4am in the morning to finish reading it. Once I understood what was happening in the story I had to finish the book, there was no way I could sleep on it. Ms Lace had me on the edge of a precipice right up until the last moments of the book. I found myself praying for redemption/restoration to make an appearance. The story was absolutely gut-wrenching, it tore at my heart. The absolute desperation of the one needing forgiveness was excruciating to read.

The story made me think of something my mother always use to explain to me when dealing with actions and consequences which required forgiveness. She said that God would always forgive me for any transgression that I committed and would never hold it against me. However, if the wrong I had done resulted in a consequence then that outcome would be a reminder of the offence I had committed, even though God had TOTALLY forgiven me!!! Therefore that action would be a Constant Reminder of the sin I had committed!!!!

I thoroughly enjoy books that challenge the way I think and makes an attempt to ask me how I would deal with these real life issues. They may not be my issues but I know that someone in the world has had to walk this road.

I look forward to more thought provoking and challenging reads from this author.

I would highly recommend this book!

Adam Hardwick's living on the edge in a constant drug induced stupor. It's only after paying his older brother an unannounced visit and coming up empty, that he does the unthinkable. Adam's life quickly spirals out of control causing him to hit rock bottom. He's forced to take responsibility for his actions and look at the man staring him back in the mirror. Though Adam's making amends for his mistakes. It isn't until love unexpectedly comes his way, that he comes to a heart wrenching conclusion. Keeping two secrets are necessary in order to continue to give and receiving love in return.

Roxanne Potts is living out the last year of a simple college life. She has everything planned out after graduation. But being in the right place, but at the wrong time. She's traumatized and her world quickly comes undone. So, she begins to pretend all is well. It's the only way she can think to begin to heal herself with the possibility of opening herself to love someday.

This book had me feeling trapped in songs. If I Was Your Girlfriend by Prince, Janie's got a Gun by Aerosmith and Drugs or Me by Jimmy Eats World.

A Constant Reminder isn't an easy book to read by any means. Lolah's dealing with some serious issues with this read. She left me questioning myself. You've buried your pain in secret. It's your belief that you're healed, but what happens when that old would is accidentally reopened? When the very person who's inflicted the pain onto you, is the only one that can make you whole again?

This books worth more than five stars!

Rehabilitation*******Redemption****Forgiveness….

***********************Rehabilation**********************
At one of the lowest point of Adam’s life was when he committed a crime. Adam life was spiraling out of control when he became a full blown addict. A single most diabolical incident was committed by Adam and his life was forever changed.

"Roxanne Potts was a senior at the college. She was a beautiful black girl with black hair and a flawless complexion.

In the twinkling of the eye Roxanne found herself in a situation that she couldn’t crawl out of. Is in that Instance Roxanne’s life was changed forever
"Roxanne envisioned looking inside her casket at her own dead body."

***********************Redemption******************
Adam is now a clean and changed man. He had to face his demons and realized the errors of his misguided judgment. Adam had to hit rock bottom and learn that turning to an Alternative to solve your problem is not always the answers.
"I hope and pray that one day they can forgive me for my part in this tragedy. I’m sorry. I wish I could take it all back."

But can they be happy together with secrets of the past that may altered their future?
"His and Tony’s secret connection to Roxanne was locked safely away, behind bars, with little to no chance of ever being discovered."

*******************************************************************************
I found myself immensely invested into this Story. It was so cleverly crafted everything was scripted, I was on a rollercoaster of emotions. It generated compassion from me, the reader in ways that you cannot imagine.
Overall this, story was effective in parts of,the sensational and the horrific subject matter on hand. It's a strange moment of cognitive storytelling. It's a story created out of a dark place where two individual so parallel to each other. As cited above Adam was redeem he hit rock bottom and went into the pit of fire to get old demons of his past life. To be the man that his mother never gave up on.
He was remorseful for the things he did under the influence of drugs....
I think the author did a stellar job of redeeming Adam in my eyes.....

Nevertheless the book has a memorable and powerful message and the author brought forth a story that's in denial or often times ignored. As such as the subject matter and the controversy that may surround it.

I must commend this author she did a really good job of telling this story and by the end of it I was bawling my eyeballs out ..

I recommend this book 2 big thumbs up!!!!!!

Anyone who has read my reviews knows that I love to inject humor into them, but this is an exception. I’ve read this book twice now, and my heart is still pounding, my nerves are still frazzled, and my thoughts are still on this story. It was that deep. It touched me in the most indescribable way. The first night after I finished reading, I literally tossed and turned all night because my thoughts were so deeply embedded in this story. I must caution you: This may not be an easy read for some. It deals with the horrible effects of drug abuse and how one person’s addiction spirals into multiple tragedies. This story also involves rape, but please do not let that deter you from reading this wonderful work of art.

It would be very easy for me to simply retell this story, but I don’t want this review to be a summary of events. I want this review to be about how you the reader will feel not only as you’re reading, but long after you’ve finished. Lolah Lace took a serious risk writing this story, and I applaud us for showing that even in worst of situations and circumstances, a person can redeem themselves and consistently work on being a better human being. If you’re expecting anything remotely along the lines of her Balls To The Walls series, then you’re in for a big surprise. It is a romance, but the heart of this romance is rooted in redemption, second, even third chances, and ultimately forgiveness and love. As you read the story of Adam and Roxanne, you will constantly ask yourself, “Could I be with this man after everything he’s done?” “Am I as forgiving as I claim to be?” “Is my faith in a high power strong enough to allow what’s in my heart to overrule what common sense is telling me I should do?” This story is intense. I had to put my Kindle down several times because I was so emotionally overwhelmed.
So it goes without saying that I highly recommend this story. Highly recommend! It will stimulate your emotions, challenge your intellect, and ultimately force you to choose a side. Does love truly conquer all? Read A Constant Reminder to find out!

Initially, I was hesitant about purchasing this book. My main concern was how do you write about such traumatic issues in a romance novel and make it entertaining? Well, the author handled it with an honesty and a delicacy that I thought was impossible.

I was completely engaged from the first paragraph and didn’t put it down until I was finished. I found the storyline compelling and the characters to be well developed and interesting. All of them serving a purpose that moved the story forward. Adam and Roxanne…wow is all I can say about their relationship.

I felt anger, sadness, relief, joy, pain, and happiness. As a matter of fact, I’m still processing all the emotions I felt from this book. It’s rare when an author can engage me so thoroughly where I’m no longer reading a story but being transported directly into it. This was a GREAT read.

Whew, deep breath. It took me a while to get my thoughts together before I sat here and wrote my review. I know what it's like loving someone who intravenously shot dope for a long time. My life paralleled Adam's mother. I gave him money to feed his addiction thinking that if I gave him the money he would not steal from me. Shame on me.They lie and manipulate with a straight face. I was so uneducated in this fight. An addict is the worst when they are high it is like a demon is released. When not using the best thing on earth. Addiction does not discriminate. I guess that is why I chose the addiction field and I must say it was therapy for me. Adam did the worst thing a man can do to a woman taking what was not freely given. While in prison he was able to be rehabilitated for some they come out worst. People who suffer from this this disease are basically good people who has made poor choices and once given the chance they can and will recover if they want too. Some would say what he did was unforgivable, but I say he without sin cast the first stone. I read Ms.Lace previous works and this is so far from it. I say BRAVA for stepping out on faith and taking the risk with such an amazing story. Why do people get high so many damn reason with one being they don't want to feel and or experience pain and some just love that high that they get from the needle because they will never experience the get high they felt after the first use. Withdrawal from heroin is one of the nastiest experience one can go through. Roxanne I so wished that she seeked help from the trauma she experienced because when we suffer in silence it manifest in other ways. I was so glad she did not past judgement on an innocent life. I could continue to go on and on. If anyone reading this is sick and tired of being sick and tired seek help. Still processing and may add more if it comes. All in all GREAT JOB CHICA. Standing ovation.

The blurb for this book really put me off. I didn't want to read about a drug addict or deal with a 'woe-is-me' story. I read romance to escape reality and this book just seemed too 'real' for me.

I should have had faith and trusted Lolah to deliver. And she did.

I won't give a synopsis since there are plenty of reviews that do so. I will however, say I love that Lolah took a very difficult story where both characters were in the pits of hell and gave them the chance at a new life.

She handled the subject matter masterfully and didn't let the story go into too dark a place that those of us that avoid these subjects would be turned off.

I would have loved to understand Adam's perspective better, particularly on the night that changed his life. I don't have closure as to why he did what he did, both in the past and in the future.

All round, another excellent read from Ms Lace.

Hmmmm...this book was an interesting read. I think the subject matter was daring and definitely made me start wondering what I would do in that type of situation and if I had that level of forgiveness in me. I was so disappointed that Adam lied.

I did feel the book was too short. The story could have been flushed out more. I wanted to feel his anguish about what happened that night. I just felt the end result was not realistic without more work on behalf of the main characters.

I thought the relationship issue with her friend was handled to quickly. Everything towards the end was rushed.

I like this author but I think she could do better.

Seems that the books I've read so far for 2015 have me all teary eyed. Just finished reading this story and I'm still sniffing from crying. Goodness. What a read. I loved it! Wow. Talk about redeemable?! Certain situations that are negative could always turn into a positive. Wow, again. This is my second book by this author and it won't be the last. Roxy and Adam had great chemistry. I loved Adam. He's someone you just want to help and know, and just keep a friendship going... especially if you see that person is willing to change.

WOW! As a fan of Lolah Lace's works I've read EVERYTHING she's ever written and really didn't think she could get any better but let me tell you HOW WRONG I WAS! This is Roxanne and Adam's story. And it takes so many twists and turns that I was thoroughly and plesantly exhausted when I finished. The storyline covers so many things: robbery, rape, drug addiction, coping with death of a love one, college life, forgiveness, redemption, and above all, love. Lolah really knocked it out of the park this time. This is a MUST read!

No. Just No.

I bought this book because a friend recommended it. If I could get my money back I would. The author claims that this is a story about love, forgiveness and redemption. It's not. Its a story about a sociopath and a fool.
In her senior year of college, Roxanne is raped. She's traumatized to the point of denial about the rape and the resulting pregnancy. Years later she meets Adam, a recovering addict and ex con. Adam lies to her from the moment they meet. Adam lies about a lot especially when he finds out that she's the girl he raped. When Roxanne finds out he's her rapist, and thus her child's father, does he own up to it? Nope he lies some more. He lies about and hides the rape from his family because he doesn't want them to think badly of him. He even admits if it keeps Roxanne in his life he'll lie without remorse.
Roxanne is simply an easily manipulated fool who seems to just want a man ( preferably non Black since she brushes the non junkie, non rapist, non convicted felon but very Black Quincy aside.) and unrepentant rapist Adam will do. This is not a romance, its simply a story of depravity by an author who doesn't seem to like Black people.

Talking about replacing one addiction with another one, in this case for love border obsession. I think the book and main characters felt incomplete, could have a better development and wrap up. Adam transition and how he dealt with his past mistakes was a mystery. Keeping his family in the dark about having a daughter, why? In general it is a difficult topic to write about, but the author managed to pull it off.

Lolahs books are in my top five, keep writing these amazing stories.

Interesting subject matter

Slightly disturbing anti-hero love story. I wasn't sure how I felt about the rape issues but I was able to empathise with the emotional dilemmas of both the main characters. I enjoyed the book as it wasn't the run of the mill love story

A mother’s desperate plea to the parole board. Yes her son was guilty of murder in the second degree and robbery but he served his time he was fully rehabilitated. Adam got himself clean and was ready to transition from prison back to society. But the past always has a way of catching up with you. Some call it karma, fate, payback. Adam called it, “A Constant Reminder.”

Flashback to the past:

Adam: His father just died and like most people in distress we seek comfort in many different ways. Comfort for Adam came in the form of coke, heroin and marijuana. Anything to numb the pain. Rick James said it best, “cocaine is a hell of a drug.” Spiraling out of control Adam and his partner in crime Tony will do anything for their next hit. Adam came from money, prestige, and good breeding. What happens when all the money in the world can’t save you from a destructive lifestyle? Will you change, redeem yourself or just give up? Prison has a way of changing a person and so does love…..

Roxanne: Straight A student, responsible, and living the life with her best friend Erika. Making her mother proud by getting her degree, Roxanne did what was expected of her. What happens when what you know to be safe and comfortable is just ripped away from you? Brutally attacked her world is changed forever. Can Roxanne ever move past what happened to her that horrible not? Love is a funny thing it doesn’t care who you are or what you have done. What happens when the one you love is not what you expected? Do you give up, forgive or deny it ever happened?

Present:

Adam and Roxanne find comfort in each other. He is exactly what she needs someone to talk to, feel safe with, and expects all of her flaws. Unfortunately not everyone is on the love train. Erika, her best friend is straight forward in how she feels Adam is no good for her friend. Although I wouldn’t call Erika much of a friend but more of a hater with an agenda. Because of Roxy’s past she has issues with trust but, she continually deals with someone like Erika who spiels hate towards her every second she gets. They are what I would call frienenemies. Despite Erika’s nastiness Adam doesn’t buy into her games and continues to love Roxy with everything he has in him. But what happens when your relationship is built on lies?

This story is told in the form of layers each character is interconnected with the next and not always in a good way. Dealing with issues like drug abuse, rape, and violence this read is not for the faint at heart. I like that this author stepped outside of the box and told a tale that would get readers to question themselves.

However I did find a few issues as a reader with this story. I didn’t understand the timeline. For instance one second Roxanne was being attacked the next it is three years later. Same for Adam. His mother was writing a letter to the parole board and a few scenes later he was working at an oil shop. Because this story deals with such heavy issues I would have liked to see the author explore the characters emotions behind these issues. It was said this was a story of redemption I didn’t find that to be the case. I was left with more questions. i.e. How did Roxanne every deal with overcoming her attack? Was Adam transition from prison to society a smooth one? How did Adam redeem himself? His prison story was that of someone who is privileged. We didn’t get much of his time in prison or how he even overcame his drug addiction. Because let’s face drugs are in prisons. At one point in the story there is one of many big reveals on Adams part. He confesses something to her about his past life and her reaction really was a non-reaction. I don't know if it's because she had such a secret of her own. The next day they just go along as if nothing has changed. It was mentioned in the story that Roxanne avoids issues but at what point was she going to get her head out of the clouds?

I wanted more of a reaction then avoidance. As a couple they dealt with such an emotional scene and honestly a deal breaker in some relationships and it was glossed over with a sex scene and a Beyoncé song. About 85% in the story we got to the real emotional depth of the story that leads readers to ask some very tough questions. Certain things in the story didn’t make sense as a reader because the timeline just moved so fast. You are dealing with such heavy issues and the emotional depth was just lacking at times. There are a few twists and turns in this story that will leave you angered, and questioning your own beliefs.

I am glad that the author took a chance and told a story such as this. I look forward to reading what else she has in store. Like I always mention judge this story for yourself and not based on this one review.

Mixed Feelings- BRAB ONLINE BOOK CLUB

This book came highly recommended by my reading buddies in online bookclubs, and it is an intriguing read. It is also unlike any other book I've read by this author.

It tells the story of Roxanne Potts and Adam Hardwick, and tells a difficult but engaging story. Adam was from a rich, upper class family but resorted to a life of crime due to a drug addiction. Roxanne was from an average family but was an ambitious young woman. Their paths crossed in a life altering circumstance, which was the premise of this book.

The author has done a great job of building up the characters and allowed me to get where each character was coming from. I found myself liking even the ones I shouldn't. I loved how the story ended and they got their HEA. A difficult topic but well done.

I put this book on a lot of shelves, because it inspired a lot of feelings in me. I don't necessarily like how it ended, although it was a totally believable way to wrap up these characters' lives. I liked that this was a book where a lot happened, concurrently, and then a lot of time passed without anything happening, just the way things happen in real life. I completely got the "will they or won't they" aspect of this book, and thought that Ms. Lace did a good job showcasing different perspectives here to create a plausible series of events.

The author is clearly a talented writer (and I would urge her to stick with third person narratives), but a good editor would have made a huge difference here.

One of my Favorite authors, Lola Lace, has done it again and written this very compelling story dealing with the unfortunate consequences, of drug addiction and the denial that intertwines the lives of Roxanne Potts, a then college student and Adam Hardwick a man with serious demons. This book dealt realistically with these issues, bringing out heartfelt emotions in me. I can't really divulge to much of the storyline, but the love, caring, and the incredible hotness can be FELT. This Read is an EXPERIENCE... LOVED IT!

Wow!

This was a book that evoked so many different emotions in me; rage, pain, despair but above all that I felt the love.

I would like to think I'm a forgiving person but forgiving the act that was committed against Roxy would have been hard for me to do.

Great book to get you thinking and to remember that God forgave us our sins so who are we not to do the same?

Ok

The story line was decent and different from anything I have ever read so that was good. However there are quite a few grammatical errors , the ending was rushed and there were too many small sentences. All that being said I would still probably give this author another try. Hopefully she has improved.

Good book, I gave it a four, because the errors where at a all time high, the story went fast...it jumped around quickly. But other than that it was a good read, editor could of made it better.
