I loved Mike Vestil’s book called Set Boundaries: The Japanese Secret to Saying No Without Guilt so I snatched up Longevity: The Chinese Secret to a Long and Happy Life with alacrity, and I am so glad I did!
It serves as a poignant reminder of what truly matters while we still have the time to appreciate it. One hard-hitting idea is that if we only see our parents once a year, we might only see them 20 more times in our entire lives, especially if they are over 70.
As I read, I found myself reflecting on my own parents and the small, ordinary moments I so often took for granted. The passages about the author walking slowly with his mother, watching her inflammation fade and her spirit soften through nothing more than daily, gentle connection, are beautiful reminders that real healing often comes from presence.
This book explains Wú Wéi - effortless action - as something you feel rather than intellectually understand. Through heartbreak, family challenges, and the desire to control life, the author shows that ease, not striving, is what restores vitality. The examples are intimate, honest, and deeply relatable.
The tonic wisdom, herbal rituals, and lifestyle teachings are practical without ever feeling preachy. I especially appreciated the idea of choosing foods and habits that have stood the test of time rather than chasing trends. The comparison between modern wellness culture and gentle traditional practices is eye-opening.
What makes this book special is the blend of emotional storytelling and timeless wisdom. It’s about living better, with more softness, balance, and gratitude.
If you’re tired of quick fixes, burnt out from forcing life, or want to feel more connected to your body, family, and peace, this book is the gentle nudge you’ve been waiting for.

Honest and inspirational!

Having faced struggles similar to the author’s, I found his story deeply vulnerable and illuminating. I’ve also read his book on setting boundaries and enjoyed it so much that I had to get this one too. The Chinese secrets to a happy and healthy life are very simple at their core, especially when compared to the complications we create for ourselves in the Western world. Their wisdom reminds me to slow down, savor the small joys, and spend more time with my family. This is a deeply reflective book, and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking peace of mind and genuine wellbeing.

Practical

I’ve recently started to realize I’d been working too hard to neglect the need of my tired body, getting sign of fatigue and stress related illness, and felt it’s time to change. This book introduced the ancient concept of Chinese Yang-shen and Simplicity philosophy, and break into practical small actions that normal people like me can follow. I will definitely try out some of the recommended routines. Nice read
