Joanna Fulford

Joanna Fulford has been a full-time writer for a number of years now. Always an enthusiastic scribbler, she found that the urge to write only became stronger with time. In the end she decided to take a chance and quit the day job to find out if she could achieve success as an author. However, she couldn't have done it without her husband's unstinting support. Fortunately the gamble paid off. It has been a long haul, with plenty of financially lean periods, but it was well worth the effort. There is nothing quite like the buzz that comes with that phone call to say a publisher wants to buy your book.

Along the way She has been fortunate to have the support and encouragement of a strong and successful writers’ group. Not only has she appreciated the friendship of its members, but has also found their critical insight and feedback invaluable. So too is the support of her editor at Harlequin. With endless patience she steered her through the revisions of the first book and saved her from herself on numerous occasions. Being able to see the resulting improvement made the work enjoyable and rewarding.

As Joanna has always had a passion for Literature and History it ihas been no hardship to do the necessary research for her books. Initially her main interests were the Enlightenment and the Regency, but in recent years she have developed a fascination for the early Medieval period as well. Researching these different eras is exciting because there is always something new to be discovered. Invariably though she ends up with far more material than she can use so it's a matter of deciding what must be left out. Historical detail must never hold up the story. Joanna always has a rough plan in her head, a general idea of where the story is going, although the characters invariably take on a life of their own. They have no qualms about departing from the script and taking her down another path. It's fun to go with them and see where it leads. Frequently their way turns out to be better than her own so she’s learned to listen to them now.

When it comes to the historical background for a new story, Joanna always chooses events in which she has a keen interest, and which involve a serious conflict of some kind. The central love story is juxtaposed with this and gives the characters more obstacles to overcome. The Great Viking Invasion was fertile ground, as were the Luddite Rebellion and the Harrying of the North which provided the settings for her second and third books respectively. The Peninsular War is the background for His Counterfeit Condesa, and for its companion novel, The Caged Countess. This conflict was also the background to Redemption of a Fallen Woman which is Joanna’s contribution to the Castonbury Park series.

This book was very disappointing.

It's got a great set-up.

He's a Viking who's lost his wife and 3-year-old son to fever. He's vowed never to fall in love again. He's turned into a mercenary who lives a rather nomadic lifestyle. She's a feisty widow who's dead husband was very abusive to her and her now 5-year-old son. As a widow and a Lady with money and land, she's vulnerable to men who want her and her possessions. (The heroine is not a virgin! Extra points to the book!)

I'm reading, I'm liking the characters, I'm liking the story, I'm liking all the slow, slow buildup to when they finally have sex together (about 2/3 of the way through).

And then the sex is horrible. I mean, the sex is enjoyable for the characters, but Fulford's descriptions of sex are TERRIBLE and boring. They are about a paragraph long, and she just lists some vaguely sexual terms.

This was so frustrating and such a letdown, I felt like hurling my Kindle across the room.

Tl;dr - Great concept, poor execution. Failure as a romance novel.

ONE REAL STAR, ONE ROMANCE STAR

This was no great romance. In trying not to sound too cliche.... this book talked to much!!! Too many words, not enough action! This is suppose to be a Viking world, yet the battles were humdrum! Good grief! The sexual tension between the two leads was good at first, but their love was described so lackluster... "He made love to her and afterwards he watched her sleep..." Oh my heck! You go through more than half the book already knowing that the two of them hook up and that is all you get!! Some interactions were more detailed, but not much... On another note of lack luster detailing, one battle took only 2 pages to start and finish.... yet a whole chapter before of the guys going over plans.... The climax of the book is the last 2 chapters.... yup.... that's it. I felt let down... I read the book for pure entertainment purposes... which is what I tend to read in the Summer.... something to read and finish, that doesn't waste a lot of my time.... but I just don't know if this one was worth any time at all.

I'm kind of torn on this one. In some aspects it was enjoyable, but the areas where it lacked did so in such a glaring way that it marred said enjoyment to a significant degree. The romance was lackluster, any action negligible, and the fact that they spared the life of the villain repeatedly only to have him keep trying to stab them both in the back.... No. I'm sorry, no. Any Viking dumb enough to spare the life of a duplicitous scumbag like that will eventually get run through.

This could have been so much better.

After the deaths of his wife and son due to an epidemic that swept through his lands, Wulfgar and his men have spent the last six years as mercenaries. Wulfgar feels guilty that he had spent so much time away from his family and swears that he will never get emotionally close to anyone again.

Anwyn lost her husband a few months ago and rejoices in it. He had been a brutal man who enjoyed inflicting pain on her. She has no intention of marrying again, but the neighboring lord, Ingevar, has designs on her and her land.

After a storm damages his ship Wulfgar lands near Anywyn's home to make repairs. The neighbor tries to run him off, but Anwyn intercedes and invites Wulfgar and his men to stay as long as they need to for their repairs. After receiving threats, Anwyn first hires Wulfgar and his men as additional protection, but then proposes a marriage of convenience to protect her from forcible marriage to someone else.

Anwyn's experiences with men have been limited to types like her late husband, but she senses there is something different about Wulfgar. It doesn't take long for her to discover that he is both honorable and amazingly kind. It doesn't hurt that he's darned good looking too. I liked the courage that she showed in standing up to Ingevar, and also in overcoming her fears to ask Wulfgar for his help.

Wulfgar has spent the last six years actively seeking death, only to be defeated by his own abilities. I loved the way that Anwyn gets under his guard and he finds himself wanting to help her. He lets her know that he won't stay, even if they marry, but that he'll make sure she's well defended before he leaves.

Wulfgar's kindness to her and her son soon has Anwyn falling in love with him. She dreams of him staying, even though he has made it clear that he won't. Wulfgar also finds himself dreaming of staying, but his certainty that he would make a terrible husband and father forces him to continue his plans to leave.

Wulfgar nearly loses everything because of his fears, whereas Anwyn does a much better job of leaving her past behind. I really enjoyed seeing her confront Wulfgar about his fears and point out what he is doing to them both. His "ah-ha" moment came almost too late, but he did manage to save the day.

I did get frustrated with his actions regarding Ingevar, as by giving in to Anwyn regarding his fate he set up the trouble that came at the end. He'd have done better to follow his instincts, at least the second time, and explained to her why he did it.

I did enjoy the epilogue a lot. It was fun to see them a year down the line.

The Viking's Touch appears to be a sequel to an earlier book by the same author, but it can be read as a standalone novel - I know because I hadn't read the previous story!

My usual historical romances tend to tend to be set mainly in the Regency period, so this was a bit of a change for me. It took a little while to get into, but overall I thought it was a good story with strongly drawn characters. A bit more violent and bloodthirsty than your average Regency, I have to admit, but as a change I did enjoy it.

The protagonists, Anwyn and Wulfgar were both sympathetic characters, but carrying a great deal of emotional baggage from their pasts. Ignvar is maybe a character who is a bit too black to be real as he doesn't appear to have a single redeeming feature, but on the bright side you do feel like cheering when he finally gets his comeuppance, and this sort of book is really about making you feel good, so I guess that van't be a bad thing!

I was relieved when I finally finished this book. I don't know why it was called "The Viking's Touch." Yes, he was a Viking, but that's the only Scandinavian thing about this book. It doesn't even take place in Norway, but the British Isles, I believe. So that was a huge letdown for me.

But that's beside the point. My main problem with this book is that it reads like a manual. The author doesn't let us figure out the characters' emotions for ourselves... she constantly has to tell us, "His face showed anger, then a touch of sadness." And enough with "her pulse increased a bit." I was so tired of hearing about racing pulses.

I felt absolutely nothing for the characters. They were a "tortured" heroine & hero, but I really didn't care.

Absorbing romantic story
4 stars

Viking adventurer, Wulfgar Ragnarsson, lives life on the edge, cheating death and making his fortune as a mercenary all to escape the pain of his past. When his ship and crew need to make repairs he finds himself thrown into the company of the beguiling widow, Lady Anwyn.

Lady Anwyn is tasting freedom for the first time but there are many who would try and win her heart and her lands. To protect herself and her son, Anwyn will do anything - even if it means giving herself to a warrior who will never give her his heart.

Upon reading the inscription in this book I found that it appears to be the sequel to The Viking's Defiant Bride however this book stands completely alone so you can still enjoy it even if you know nothing of the first story.

From the outset I was charmed by this book and the writing style. I'm not sure whether all the language was completely correct to the time period but it was still engaging and the interactions interesting.

Anwyn was a likeable character - strong and defiant but still true to her time period and never becoming a stereotype. Wulfgar is my favourite type of hero - someone who is strong and tough but with a sensitive core and that is crying out for the love of a good woman. The pair had great chemistry and as such I would have liked the love scenes to be a little more in depth.

The story itself kept me interested and I always wanted to carry on reading just a little bit more each time. The ending was wonderful and a good culmination of everything that had happened throughout the story.

Overall, if you like tales of Vikings and the women that tame their hearts and enjoy a good romance then I really think you will like this story so it's one I would recommend to you. 4 stars.

It's a slow mover for sure, but so charmingly written with genuinely nice characters that I found myself unable to put it down. The hero is a complete dunderhead of course, but very respectful and kind which is a change up for the viking genre. I was in full cheer mode when the heroine gave him a much needed bollocking. Some well deserved remorse, a good grovel, and a gracious heroine make it a very satisfying end.

This book was an amazing read. The sequel to “The Viking’s Defiant Bride” takes place nearly 28 years later and follows Elgiva and Wolfrum’s son Wulfgar. Having lost his young wife and son to the fever he sets about his quest to challenge death, hoping it will take his life and end his suffering. But the gods have other ideas and for seven years he and his fellow warriors amass enough wealth they can finally settle down. Just one more battle for Rollo and they will be done. However, when their ship is damaged in a storm, they are forced to beach it for repairs. It seems the gods have a different plan.
Anwyn is finally free of the tyrant that had been her husband. Now she and her young son Eyvind are finally tasting their first months of freedom. However, a woman alone in these times is never truly free. Anwyn is now in control of Drakensburgh and her neighbor Ingvar will do whatever it takes to possess not only her, but her lands. She is quickly running out of time before he forces his hand.
Upon their first meeting, the intense attraction between Wulfgar and Anwyn is clear despite both of their denials. Wulfgar only wants to repair his ship and get on with his mission. Anwyn allows him to use Drakensburgh’s tools and craftsmen if it means he will be gone once the repairs are finished. When Ingvar oversteps his role, Anwyn turns to Wulfgar with an offer. She will pay in gold for the protection of his men. Wulfgar has seen men like Ingvar and knows in the end there will be bloodshed. His men are willing to delay the journey, having been enticed with both gold and the promise of battle.
Only when Anwyn’s brother appears are the stakes changed and Anwyn finds she must take a husband before one is chosen for her. The contract was simple; marry a Viking in exchange for his protection. The marriage will be in name only and once things have settled he will move on. Wulfgar promises his protection but is clear he is not marriage material and when the tide is right he will leave. He also warns Anwyn of his desires to take her to her bed and if he chooses, he will bed her as is his right.
This is the story of two people who have built a barrier around their hearts. Anwyn closed her heart when she was forced to marry a man twice her age and had to survive each day under his brutality. Wulfgar buried his along with his wife, son and the guilt that he was not there to save them. Can two lost souls finally risk their hearts again for a second chance? The characters are well developed; the book was both touching and humorous. The sexual tension between Anwyn and Wulfgar was evident and when the two finally succumbed it was sizzling. I look forward to reading other books by this author and would definitely recommend this book to other readers.

After the death of her first husband Lady Anwyn should be free to live her life as she chooses but in a time where women had no power over their own future she is at risk from the men who want to take her land from her. Wulfgar is a warrior who travels the world with his mercenary crew taking risks with his life as long as there is a profit involved. He meets Anwyn when his ship stops on her land to make repairs and she asks him to help protect her land from her enemies. They agree to a marriage of convenience but can Anwyn win Wolfgar’s heart?

I have a bit of a soft spot for light hearted romance stories when I’m looking for a quick and easy read. I’ve been reading a lot of paranormal stories recently so it made a nice change for me to pick up something historical, especially something set so far back in time. I have to admit I’ve not read much set in this time period but I enjoyed the story and it felt authentic to it’s time.

Anwyn is a strong character, she went through hell at the hands of her first husband and is determined not to let her life be controlled by anyone again. She is protective of her son and of her people and will do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Wulfgar doesn’t want to risk his heart, he keeps his emotions hidden but finds he is unable to resist Anwyn.

I found myself really enjoying The Viking’s Touch, the romance is sweet, the story is fairly predictable but still makes for a fun read and the action scenes were well written. It’s a story I would happily recommend to fans of this genre.

I really felt like this book really dragged on in spots. There was also alot of modern slang as oppossed to old world language. But over all, it was a decent read.
