The Tooth Collector is a psychological-supernatural hybrid horror novella with an intriguing premise: a grieving father trying to hold his family together after the death of his wife, only to be confronted by a sinister entity that “collects” more than just children’s baby teeth.

This story shines in its emotional setup. Tim’s grief, exhaustion, and mental unraveling feel real and heartbreaking. The early chapters portray a father who’s barely holding himself together — the hallucinations, nightmares, dissociation, and hypervigilance all blend into a believable picture of a man pushed to his breaking point. When the supernatural element appears, it’s hard to tell whether Tim is losing his grip on reality or whether something truly monstrous is stalking his family, which creates a compelling tension.

Where the story struggles is in its pacing and brevity. The concept has strong potential, but the short length doesn’t give the psychological or supernatural horror enough time to build. Key moments — the bag of teeth pulled from the lake, the Tooth Collector’s appearances, and the final confrontation — arrive abruptly and resolve just as quickly, leaving little room for dread or escalation. The ending feels particularly rushed, introducing new developments without fully deepening the mythology or emotional payoff.

Overall, The Tooth Collector has a solid foundation and memorable ideas, especially in how it explores grief and paternal fear through horror symbolism. With more space to develop the atmosphere and supernatural rules, this story could become a much more impactful and unsettling read. I appreciate the creativity behind the concept and look forward to seeing how the author continues to grow in exploring psychological horror.

When I glanced at the synopsis for THE TOOTH COLLECTOR, I was uncertain about what to expect, but what I encountered was far from it. THE TOOTH COLLECTOR turned out to be far more terrifying than I could have ever envisioned. Although it is a brief tale, I completely lost track of that once I started reading, and it ceased to matter as I hurried to the conclusion to discover what would unfold next.

A man named Tim is raising his two sons on his own after the passing of his wife. His youngest, Elijah, has just lost his first tooth, and it quickly spirals into a nightmare for Tim as he struggles to protect his child from a dark and malevolent force that seeks to claim more of his teeth and returns night after night in pursuit of Eli. Tim does everything in his power to appease the tooth collector and safeguard his son.

THE TOOTH COLLECTOR is an extremely gruesome and chilling tale filled with numerous twists that will have you racing to the finish to see what happens next. The vivid descriptions create an intense sense of immersion, making me feel as though I am experiencing the events firsthand.

I strongly recommend all horror enthusiasts to give this one a shot by picking up a copy of THE TOOTH COLLECTOR today.

Hash Black is on my list of favorite authors for creating stories such as this one. The Tooth Collector is an unprecedented re-telling of the old fable of the Tooth Fairy. Hash has created a very chilling, supernatural, and horrific tale based on one that should be trusted and safe. The Tooth Collector is anything but that.

This is a short quick read but it hits all of the gory horror points that keep you wanting to see what happens next.

The story feeds on the heart by telling the story of Tim who had lost his wife, leaving him to raise two little boys. The many unthought of events that occur in a young child’s life pull at the psyche of this father who was not used to having to deal with such things as his little boy losing his first tooth. This is where the Tooth Collector makes his appearance. The story just gets creepier and spookier from there.

Really good short read and will give you your horror, gore, and creep fix. I do recommend it and thank Hash for allowing me to read the book as an ARC in return for an honest review.

Wow! I don't normally like to read short stories as they don't have enough blood, gore & horrifying descriptions to keep me interested. This book however had it all. From the first couple of pages, & the title, you just knew something horrible would happen... and it did. Losing your first tooth is bad enough, but when you think the tooth fairy will pay you for it, it doesn't seem so bad. Until you see it isn't a cute little person with wings & a pretty dress, but a huuuuge, black figure, with boney fingers ending in claws, waiting, waiting to grab your tooth & seize the opportunity to take them all. Following you wherever you go, hiding in the shadows of darkness, mumbling "tooth, must have tooth". And in your dreams, beneath the water, gasping for air whilst it holds you down in the murky mud, you recall your fishing trip & what you found. A genius short story that will linger in your mind. All I can say is "I'm glad I am too old to lose any more teeth"

This was a truly terrifying and fun little short story to get lost in. I am signed up to the mailing list for the author James Yates and he kindly emailed me recommending this book, with an attached link to request an ARC copy and I am so happy I chose to request one. This is my first book I have read of Hash Black and I was impressed. It is very creepy and dark, it makes you feel like you are living in the Twilight Zone with this family and trying desperately to escape from this nightmare, being chased by a tall, dark monster who lurks around in the darkness demanding teeth. He seems like a very bad tooth fairy, nothing like in fairytales where they are magical and kind. I was totally hooked until the last page, and then my jaw dropped in shock.

I’m giving this story a 5 out of 5 because it is a fun little horror to read, it takes me back to my childhood days reading my favourite ‘Point Horror’ and ‘Goosebumps’ books. I highly recommend!

"I want to start by thanking the author for giving me the opportunity to receive this copy of a story that I genuinely enjoyed. This is a creepy tale that simply gave me genuine fear, especially while reading it at night. It strongly reminds me of Darkness Falls, and the story of The Tooth Collector is undoubtedly chilling and horrifying."
"As I read, I felt truly immersed, becoming part of the story with this horrific entity that seems pulled straight from my worst nightmares. The ending left me satisfied, though with the lingering sensation that something is wrong. Congratulations to the author, Hash Black! I give it 5 stars because I consider the story to be very well done. If you are a horror fan, this is the story for you—make sure to read it at night!"

I was wary of getting this book because I don’t like gore much, but the story pleasantly surprised me. It is NOT about the gore, even if there is some.
If you stop to think about it, the tooth fairy legend is pretty creepy. A fairy, or whatever it is, sneaks into young children’s bedrooms and collects their teeth. Of course, whether or not it’s a fairy remains to be seen, because why would any fairy want all those teeth? The author takes full advantage of this question in all its creepy glory, coming up with a really chilly monster.
However, what I liked the most was the ambiguity. Is there a real monster, or is that grieving father of two losing his mind?
A short but worthwhile read.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. No profit made.

The Tooth Collector by Hash Black
🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is an interesting and creepy short story. Tim and his 2 sons encounter a frightful creature who collects human teeth. Tim wants to protect his sons from this evil tooth collector!!

I feel like the story had great potential to go into a really exciting and extra terrifying one, but for me, this fell a bit short. I think if the story was longer, more explanations would have been helpful, as I was confused with some parts of the story.

Overall, I enjoyed the fast read and the story has great imagery!

*This book comes out November 30th. Check it out for a fun read!*

If you're looking for a twisted short read that'll still give you the creeps, this one will do it!

A widowed man is raising two younger boys on his own. When the youngest loses his first tooth, he's freaked out at first until his father explains the tooth fairy. But during a fishing outing, the man accidentally catches a black bag with a nasty surprise inside.

Now, a tooth obsessed nightmarish creature is stalking him and his son's, demanding their teeth. And it won't stop until it gets what it wants.

Straight forward and to the point this is a one sitting read that will freak you out and gives the ol' tooth fairy a horrific makeover. I highly recommend it.

A father is left to fend for himself in looking after his young sons after his wife's death. When the younger son has a loose tooth, his father tells him about the tooth fairy. After a fishing excursion to a lake with his elder son, they reel in a huge físh but after that they reel in a bag of rotten teeth and throw the whole bag into the lake. Then the nightmares begin and his sons are in danger from a monstrous entity asking for his teeth. Will the father be able to save his sons? A chilling tale which sent shivers down my spine reading about the father's ghastly predicament.

Tim is trying to be a good father to his two young boys after the death of his wife. The family is trust is terror after Elijah loses his first tooth.
The author does a fantastic job of building scenes of terror while blending in supernatural along with psychological horror elements. This was my first book by Hash and it's not gonna be my last. For fans of body horror, supernatural and psychological horror.

I love this story a lot. I always need to take my turtle time when reading Hash's books I don’t want to miss a thing. The cliffhangers always get me in the end because I'm deeply invested in the story. What intrigues me the most was the father was dreaming about the Tooth Collector was real. I'm going to do more further investigation by reading it again to better understand what happened. Iler.

I feel my tolerance for pain is pretty high but I will admit when you start messing with my teeth I get squeamish. . . I've got more money in my mouth than I care to admit and it's not from neglect is just the way it is. . . This poor father. . . just trying to protect his two young boys. I thought his solution was perfect, but did the tooth collector. Another great read by Hash Black.

Quick read not just because it's a short book but because it was a story I couldn't put down. The stories about the tooth fairy can range from sweet to scary and this was definitely a thriller. The single father was having a rough time between bills and raising two small boys but a fishing trip with 1 boy while the other was on school field trip really didn't go good.

Definitely NOT anyone's idea of the Tooth Fairy.

Scary enough to make you dread EVER to lose a tooth, much less sleep with one under your pillow.

A terrifying tooth fairy story!

There is something about single parent horror that creeps me out so much, and this book really showcases why it’s so terrifying. Even when the main character, Tim, is with his kids for most of the story, you still feel a deep sense of loneliness. The isolation and hopelessness from being the only adult your children can rely on for answers is terrifying in itself. Hash Black does an amazing job capturing the emotional weight of single parenthood while you’re trying to fight off some horrific, unknown monster.

The Tooth Collector itself is grotesque and absolutely stomach churning. Many of its descriptions were so vivid they made me squirm with discomfort and fight back a wave of nausea. I was completely immersed in Tim’s desperation as he tried to protect his family from a monster that he didn’t know how to fight. There are plenty of unanswered questions, but I love horror stories that leave room for my imagination.

I recommend this book to those who want a quick horror fix and don’t mind a little body horror that comes with it. This story is fast paced, and since it’s a short story, you can easily read it in one sitting.
