After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. Other family members provided a small house in Durham and financial support. After Stephen's grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally challenged.
Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums.
He met Tabitha Spruce in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University, where they both worked as students; they married in January of 1971. As Stephen was unable to find placement as a teacher immediately, the Kings lived on his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loan and savings, with an occasional boost from a short story sale to men's magazines.
Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many were gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies.
In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching English at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.

WOW. Simplemente WOW. Stephen King te amo. Ame muchisimo este libro, la forma en que estaba escrito. El viaje tiempo definitivamente es uno de mis temas favoritos y lo supo desarrollar bien. Me encanta que el tema principal sea evitar que maten a JFK (esta en la sinopsis), siento él un tipo tan importante en esa epoca de los '60 en Estados Unidos.
Me encantaron la reglas que impuso King al hablar de cómo se podia viajar al pasado y que pasaba cuando regresabas.
Este primer tomo fue increible, y el final te deja con esa sensacion de querer leer la segunda parte, lo cual voy a hacer ahora mismo.

10 años después de mi primer (y frustrado) acercamiento a King, vuelvo en esta media-novela y me llevo varias sorpresas (casi todas positivas) y las ganas de leerme la segunda parte cuanto antes.
Hoy no me voy a explayar con los motivos (ni por qué promedio para abajo cuando claramente esta "primera parte" no merece menos de ☆☆☆½), pero tanto la idea central como el estilo me gustaron mucho. Metele que mañana sí.

Creo que supieron muy bien separar el libro para hacer dos tomos, éste 1ero tiene hasta el Capítulo 13, cuenta el inicio de las aventuras en el tiempo de Jake Epping alias George Amberson, su vida inicial en 2011 y lo que planean junto con Al Templeton y el pasado en 1958 donde busca hacer un cambio radical, me gusta mucho este personaje y me siento identificada al ser él también profesor de Lengua.
King como siempre pinta muy buenos personajes principales y teniendo en cuenta las circunstancias a las que se enfrenta vemos muchos aspectos de su personalidad.
Sospecho que a continuación habrá grandes momentos, buenos y malos, ya estoy deseando empezarlo al segundo tomo porque he quedado muy enganchada.

Una maravilla de novela...

Éste fue mi primer libro de Stephen King leído. Si bien está dividido en dos partes y aún estoy esperando que salga la otra (el viernes), voy a hablarles de mis primeras impresiones.
Estoy realmente maravillada. Cuando un autor puede describir lo que rodea a un personaje con tantos detalles sin generar aburrimiento, haciéndolo de manera natural y no forzada, éste se gana mi aprecio. Adoro una narración detallista, pero cuando se torna pesada y hace que el libro no avance, es realmente muy feo. Por eso, larga vida a los autores como Cronin, Martin y... ahora debo agregar a King.
Lo que me llevó a leerlo fue la temática de viajes en el tiempo, combinado con el hecho de que se centra en torno a prevenir el asesinato de JFK. Amo la ficción histórica. En realidad amo la Historia, por eso cualquier libro que tenga base en un hecho histórico me atrae inmediatamente.
Esperaba que se centre más en Kennedy, pero no fue así. Nuestro narrador, Jake Epping, es un profesor de inglés que da clases a adultos con ciertos problemas para la lectura y redacción. Se encuentra sumido en una pila de redacciones aburridas y llenas de errores ortográficos, hasta que comienza a leer la cruda historia de Harry Dunning, el conserje del establecimiento. Esa noche, algo cambia en el interior de Jake.
Luego, un viejo amigo de nuestro narrador lo convoca, repentinamente enfermo, para revelarle una conexión de nuestro mundo con 1958. La intención de éste último es que Jake se encargue de impedir el asesinato de Kennedy, pero nuestro protagonista tiene una idea que no va a poder quitar de su cerebro nunca más.
La minuciosidad de la escritura, la manera en la que progresa la historia y la evolución de los personajes es tremenda. Todo tiene un sentido, hasta las nimiedades lanzadas de manera azarosa a través del relato.
No puedo esperar para sumergirme en el segundo tomo.

This is a great mystery with some pivotal moments where I'd stop and have to think about what I'd do in Jake's shoes.
Jake goes back in time to stop President Kennedy from being shot. He has to go back to 1958 and live and age the five years to make his plan to save Kennedy. He saves a girl and a family from being murdered along the way and has to deal with the changes (butterfly effect) that having saved these people have on the world.
He travels and ends up in falling in love with Sadie. The entanglement of love, time travel, secrets, trying to save a president and the affect these changes make on the world are intriguing. Highly recommend.

Its been about 20 years since I read a Steven King book. This was a great departure for him (I think) and definitely for me and an interesting book - a little long but very thoughtful and as well written as you're going to get from Mr King.

Cuando partí este libro, sentí algo de miedo ya que había disfrutado tanto la Tormenta del Siglo que sería difícil llegar a su altura. Pero me fui de boca. No quiero caer en repeticiones aunque siento que ya he dicho esto (espero que no... O tal vez, espero que sí. Lo haría aún más sabroso todo), pero creo que esto es, a la fecha, lo que por lejos más me ha gustado de King. y he tenido MUCHÍSIMO con lo que regodearme.
La historia te captura, está tan bien escrito, todo tan bien enlazado, te lleva. Me pasó (y no puedo recordar desde qué libro no me pasaba esto) que no podía dejar de leerlo, no llegué nunca a un punto de "Uff, ya, me cansé, suficiente por hoy", sino que seguía y seguía leyéndolo, deteniéndome sólo cuando era estrictamente necesario: me bajo en el próximo paradero, me tengo que ir, etc etc etc. Incluso en las últimas páginas, en el obvio "relleno" de paso de tiempo, King se las ingenia para meter una nueva línea de interés (situación Mimi) que te compromete igual.
Y ese final, ese Jimla... Csm, no sé que es pero me erizó el cuello. Ahora sólo quiero correr a mi casa y empezar la 2da parte, a la cual le llevo toda la fe de que me sorprenderá tan gratamente como esta.

Awesome premise, as usual with King. I love the way he tells a story. He actually can make the absurd feel like obvious truth. This story was thoughtful and tender. My heart went out to Jake as he made hard choices and did what he thought was right.
This book made me think about my own small life. I have made mistakes just like everyone else. If I could go back in time and change my mistakes would I? Would I be happy with the results if I did? When it comes down to it, my failures as well as my triumphs make up the person who is me. I guess that is why we have one shot at making things right - so get it right, or do your best and let it go.

από την ιδέα με τα μπέργκερ με είχε ρουφήξει
κάτι τέτοιες λεπτομέρειες είναι που με τρελαίνουν στον κινγκ
γενικά, αν και πολυλογάδικο βιβλίο, έχει πολύ ωραία πλοκή και η περιπέτεια αξίζει
ομολογώ όμως ότι σε κάποια σημεία με κούρασε

I'm usually disappointed in fiction books; something usually happens for which I am not willing to suspend my imagination, and then he whole book unravels for me. And yet, despite the otherworldly things going on in this novel, this book didn't lose me. In fact, it kept pulling me in deeper and deeper, just like the way the lead character kept getting pulled back down that rabbit hole. I kept reading thinking once 11/22/63 arrived there was no way King's outcome could meet the expectations I had built up. But it did. And then some. Has this been made into a movie yet? It should be. It's such an interesting approach to a well known event that kept me engaged throughout. My only quibble was the romance angle (which was big part of the book). I don't know why but I wasn't comfortable with it or completely buying it. I've never read a Stephen King book before. Maybe these type of relationships are common in his books but I had problems with that aspect of the story. I think I was having trouble reconciling the author who wrote about the creepy clown (not a book I read, by the way) with the author walking us through the lead character's romance. I also don't think I was laughing at the times I was supposed to be laughing during my reading. But those are minor quibbles. Overall, you won't regret investing yourself in this book.

Simplemente magnífico. Perdí la cuenta de cuántos generos engloba este libro, pero SK los aborda de maravilla como el veterano que es en materia de escritor. Sobresale toda la investigación sobre la época, incluida la jerga y la vestimenta.
La narrativa me atrapó y no paró de jugar conmigo haciendome morir de angustia tanto como de risa, asombro e incluso lastima por momentos. Es increible cuantas veces me tuvo aguantando la respiración.
Es irreemplazable esa magia característica de SK de darle vida a los lugares. Si bien los personajes están muy bien construidos, los verdaderos protagonistas son los lugares que los mismos visitan a lo largo de la historia.
Sin mas palabras, una de las mejores novelas que he leído y recomiendo a todo el que quiera una historia que los sorprenda llena de detalles

La verdad es que no me considero fan de SK pero debo admitir que este libro es bueno.
Sin embargo, sentí real emoción a partir de la última parte del libro (Para ser específica, a partir de la obra de teatro) y creo que ahí falla, al menos para mí. Además de que lo sentí súper denso, like, me tomó MESES acabarlo y creo que en gran parte es por la cantidad de nombres de ciudades, artistas entre otras cosas que nunca había escuchado antes. Supongo que eso es culpa mía. Supongo.
Aún así, amo con toda mi alma a Jake y en serio espero que nada malo le pase a su gato.

Es largo, bastaaante, pero llevadero y enganchador (? La particularidad de los viajes es que siempre van a la misma fecha y hora, que no se puede cambiar, y que cada viaje es un reinicio (o al menos así lo creen). Por lo tanto vivimos con Jake un par de años en los Estados Unidos de la década de los 60, con sus precios bajos, fumadores indiscriminados, discriminación racial, y prejuicios sociales. Esta parte me resultó muy interesante, el poder ver como era en esa época...

This is an awesome, awesome book. I only gave it 4 stars because it was slow getting started. But once the time travel was underway, it was fun and curiosity all the way. What's going to happen next? This book is fairly long so plan on devoting some time to it. It isn't as long as Under the Dome, but it is much better. And there is a companion TV Show on Hulu. The book is better.

La narrativa es de lo mejor que he leído. Tanto detalle de los años 60s demuestran la gran investigación que hizo el autor. Los personajes están bien desarrollados y de alguna manera logra que recuerdes a cada uno de ellos sin perder el hilo. Para mí fue como lectura inmersiva.

Fantastic book, a lot of real facts as well as a fictional story , no slow spots here just things happening all the time. Really good finale too unexpected
