So glad I found this modern adaptation to read as I honestly could not understand the original 🥲 but I enjoyed this, they still spoke in a bonkers way though. Such a gut wrenching story filled with absolutely terrible characters, interested to see how “Wuthering heights” stands up to it since it’s been marketed as a love story. Also would’ve been nice if Brontë could have used different names for the characters so there wasn’t about 3 names between the 9 of them 😂

Are negative stars possible??? I feel like I wasted so much time reading this “classic” that read more a horror story than a “romance”. I am honestly grateful I never had to read Wuthering Heights in school, because I suspect it would have made me hate classic literature entirely. Finishing this book felt less like an accomplishment and more like endurance. I kept waiting to discover the beauty and depth people praise, but instead found a story filled with cruelty, chaos, and characters who are nearly impossible to sympathize with.

I genuinely do not understand why this novel is considered a classic or what lesson readers are supposed to take from it. The book seems to romanticize obsession, emotional instability, and domestic abuse under the label of “great love.” Heathcliff and Catherine are often treated as tragic lovers, yet their relationship is destructive and psychologically unhealthy. What is often described as passion reads more like untreated mental illness and mutual torment.

Nothing about the story felt beautiful or moving to me. The violence is disturbing rather than meaningful, and the emotional suffering rarely leads to growth or insight. Instead, misery simply repeats across generations.

The narrative structure only made the experience more frustrating. Having the story filtered through Nelly, a servant who is both overly involved and oddly possessive, feels like an unnecessary complication. The layered narration adds confusion without adding clarity.

The book is also surprisingly difficult to follow. Too many characters share the same names, family relationships are tangled to the point of feeling almost incestuous, and the timeline jumps around in ways that make the story harder to track than it needs to be. By the time I understood who everyone was, I found I didn’t care what happened to any of them.

I kept waiting for the moment where this book would justify its reputation, but that moment never came. Instead, I finished the novel wondering why this story continues to be praised at all. For me, Wuthering Heights was not profound or romantic. It was confusing, unpleasant, and exhausting from beginning to end.

This may be the first time I’ve ever finished a book and thought, I really hope the movie is nothing like this.

Gosh this was a tough one for me to get through 😅 I wanted to read this book before I see the movie, but it was quite a challenge. I had to restart the original audiobook about six times before I gave up in search for an easier version to read. I found this modern English version, which was super helpful (thank you so much for making this), but even with that the storyline was still difficult for me to follow. I just finished it and am still confused about who is who and what actually happened in the story?? I did look up the characters multiple times and try to remember, but it was tough. I think I missed everything that was exciting? I have no idea what was going on for most of the book. I really wanted to love it, but that was a real challenge for my auditory processing skills 😬 Nothing against the writers I am sure they are very talented it’s just a bit advanced for where I’m at right now!

First, let me say I am so proud of myself for pushing through this one!! I read this with the intention of going to see the movie afterwards which definitely helped motivate me through the slow and confusing parts lol, although this adapted version helped tremendously too.

The generational trauma in this goes crazyyyyy. There is not one redeemable character in this (I know is not the point but it still bothers me just a little because I wanted to root for someone!!) It is gonna take some time to recover from the emotional turmoil this book put me through.

Now I get why this is a classic!! Its fascinating to me that Emily Bronte chose to write about such unconventional characters even back in the 1800's. Also, the format is so interesting being that this is told as a story being told to someone else?? Confusing at times but really interesting.

I expected this to be similar to the movie but I’m a little confused what book these producers based the movie off of bc it wasn’t this ???? There was just a lot going on and I couldn’t keep up and I kind of liked the plot of the movie more but the book for sure had more depth.

This is my first time reading Wuthering Heights and I have never seen any of the films. With that, I enjoyed this adaptation of the book because it allowed me to focus on the story instead of the writing style. Unfortunately, focusing on the story resulted in me being absolutely blown away by how miserable of an existence everyone had in this book. Like tell me there’s not a correlation between the book being published in 1847 and Sigmund Freud developing his theory of psychoanalysis shortly after LMAO.

Anyways, I’m pissed Catherine couldn’t marry Heathcliff because of his lack of social status, but then never ventured more than a 5 mile radius throughout her life. Like bestie, just marry Heathcliff and be miserable together!!! Anywayssss, I’m glad I live in a world that has antidepressants cause I think they all need a high dose and some therapy lmao

This book was absolutely incredible. I’m so thankful for the translation because I was able to focus on the story. The translation was really good, sentence for sentence without losing the essence of the writing

great Read

Great way to get through the story in simpler language. Give this book a go . You will not regret it. The story makes a lot of sence in this format.
