After surviving political chaos in the Dwarven Empire and two assassination attempts, Syl's journey takes another sharp turn. What began as a visit in stone halls among scheming nobles ended with unforeseen consequences and an unlikely friendship.
Now, Syl and Vee find themselves in the hands of the elves, far from familiar lands. Can our troublesome duo survive in these lands? Will Syl's disguise hold, or will the slimy truth need to come out? And, more importantly, what rewards are waiting around the corner?
Wow! I love Syl and Vee! Grab the book or start the series, to see why...
Wow! I absodamnlutely love Syl! And yeah this book was even better than the last one. OK go ahead and laugh 😃 at me, I'll wait, 'cause of the many times I've said that after finishing up another book! Sandwiched between, fighting monsters, Roll Playing dueling, and dungeon diving Syl and Vee manage to study magic, oh did you know that as bonded companions they can share spells or even borrow them if they fit their style, interesting huh. Which is just what they do, even receiving Dimension Magic. So yeah they're working hard to level up everything they can... as Syl wants to be a Riftmancer. And yes there might even be a marriage. You're gonna hafta grab this action-driven litRPG to keep up with Syl and Vee and maybe just maybe we'll figure out what that bonus short story was all about once we have the next book in our hands!
Here's a couple of quotes that amused me:
“You are a spider!” “That doesn’t mean I automatically like them!"
“No, that’s just Syl Syl-ing,” Vee answered. “Don’t use me as a verb.”
Spoliers ahead! Although i was sad to see trixie leave us so soon after rejoining with her, the elves slowly grew on me. I knew Syl needed downtime to finally work on all the magic theyd learned. I do miss the days of having no responsibilities and just tinkering on spells for hours if not days on end. The bouns chapter took me off guard and atarted reading it with "surely this is a dream, theres no way". As i continued the concept (similar to other stories id read) began growing on me and i was very ready for the beat down of that kid. Sadly it ended in a way that was not very fulfilling... Welp, i look forward to the required beach episode next book
Ps before the bonus chapter i was very concerned about Vee exposing Syl. But as i read the bonus, pretending it was actually happening, i decided i would rather Vee expose Syl, than have to abandon 4 books of world building
My reviews are my own. If you liked this book, I’m glad you enjoyed it. If not, I respect your opinion. This is merely my opinion, so let's keep it courteous. My review is honest and voluntary.
Loved the storyline on this one, great mix of story, adventure, action, and growth. Two Issues: ONE - I had a problem with this one because of the blabbermouth, disrespectful, immature behavior from Vee. They are trying to make her sassy, but she is just blatantly rude. I hope they fix that in the next book. TWO - I also disliked the politics and how they were "resolved". Looking forward to the next book at the beach!!!
This is a great transition point for Syl as a character. This is where she moves from a lone but powerful wanderer, who occasionally teams up with others for a time, into an overpowered major player in the world, now with a new lifelong companion in Vee. I agree with the author, Lunadea, that the Elf arc went on a bit too long, but it was still a complete and full experience. There are plenty of level-ups and evolutions, new friends, elf politics and culture, trials, and one major mystery finally resolved.
Overall, this was a very satisfying volume, even if it occasionally dragged. I’m glad to see Syl moving on to bigger and better things.
Interestingly, the best part of this book might actually be the bonus chapters at the end. Originally written as an April Fools joke that ballooned into something more, the story of Syl becoming a cultivator is a surprisingly fun clash of genres. It’s a shame it isn’t a full book on its own, but hopefully Lunadea revisits the idea in the future.
I continue to enjoy Syl's adventures. They are better with a companion though, so I'm glad Vee sticks around.
I have to admit though, I never considered her 'threatened' in this act of the story, so there wasn't a lot of tension in my mind, just sort of unraveling the story and building the lore and Syl's capabilities. Apparently, I'm easy to entertain.
It's ok, a little less interesting then previous books. Vee started to get pretty annoying though, constantly whining about anything and everything. Complaining seems to be her main personality trait.
The whole elf arc was way too long and largely uneventful, we don't even get to see the actual conclusion as it's just left for the elves to deal with.
Beside one brief mention Trixie completely disappeared, the crown is also not mentioned again...
