Lies Beyond: A Deadly Anthology

Rate this book
Do you remember the first time Death pointed his bony finger at you?

Lies Beyond is a collection of stories that welcomes you to stare back into the shadowy face of the Grim Reaper; to deal with that old, faithful foe of mankind. Some stories are about facing it, like Michael Jones is forced to do during his ill-fated trip to the movies in Never-Ending Ads. Some are about fighting it, like the story of the hair-raising attempts of a mad scientist who tries to peek beyond the veil in The First Three Seconds. Others unpack the transgression of death, like Sting, wherein a group of teens setting up an online sting operation end up attracting a predator far more sinister than they ever could’ve expected.

These stories will haunt you, delight you, and make you think… So, dear reader, would you take a trip across the old River Styx? Would you stare back a while into the hollow eyes of death? Would you take a chance and see what Lies Beyond?

Josiah Furcinitti has been in the business of stories for a long time.

He worked in a small, local bookstore as a clerk and stocker for a number of years, which not only fanned the fire of his love of reading, but also enabled him to spend way too much money buying and reading all the newest and best books as they came out.

After moving to the South Shore of MA, where he now lives with his wife, he became a locksmith, a job in which he has a front row seat to the most interesting characters the area has to offer; you don’t really know someone until you’ve seen them lose all of their most important keys.

He finished his first novel in October of 2023 and is currently seeking representation for it. In the meantime, he has written over a dozen short stories and is working on his next novel!

Alright, so, it’s my book… but I promise I wouldn’t put it in your hands unless I thought it deserved the rating.

This collection is me wrestling with my own fears and thoughts and struggles with the common denominator of mankind, that one nasty habit we just cannot seem to kick—Death—in the best way I know how: fiction.

Each of these stories started as a seed, a “what if” (see afterward for more details on this) and were inevitably tainted by the shadow which has hung over my life for well over a decade now (see forward for more on that).

Long story short, I had a lot of fun writing this collection and I hope you’ll have even more reading it.

This book was depressingly good, but it fit the mood the author was trying to set because there's no happy thought when it comes to death. But fear not because that's only the small part of the whole book. There are 10 short stories, each with its own weird and eerie vibes. My personal favorite was the First Session! 🫣😱.

One thing that I do find this book very interesting about was the story behind every story. The author took the time to explain how his inspiration came from his eventful life and turned it into a story. While the story was heavy on the macabre theme, the author himself has a great sense of humor and, dare I say, very optimistic and believes there's light at the end of the tunnel-type of person. I'm hoping that one day he will write his own life story because he's a great storyteller and his afterword was genuinely funny and yep...he talks a lot for someone who tries to keep it brief. 👻 Kidding!

What is death, or Who is Death?
In this collection of expertly crafted short stories, Furcinitti weaves the threads of the beyond into the uncertainty of the present. Where do we go when we die? What is death? What is loss? Regret? Pain?
There are stories about family, stories about fear and doubt, stories about insanity and supernatural clarity.
For you who desire the macabre and the mysterious, for you who seek the frightening and the foreboding, for you to whom the wet spider crawling upon the skin is an inviting idea, this is the collection you must read.
Come on in; the water's warm and comforting and caressing with a bony hand of curious finality.
