Falling for a ghost who never died is one thing. Falling for one she can’t touch is torture.
Trapped by an ancient family curse, the last Lord of Strathmuir Manor, Lucien MacArloch, has spent centuries haunting its halls, invisible to the living. Until a timid librarian with a stubborn streak stumbles into his world.
Forced into the volunteers' meeting at the manor, Chantelle never expected to lock eyes with the infuriatingly attractive lord who just happens to be—a ghost.
Between their banter and the dark family secrets they uncover, Chantelle becomes determined to break the curse. If she fails, Lucien will remain trapped in Strathmuir Manor forever. And if she succeeds… she might lose him anyway.
Forget Forever is a slow-burn supernatural romance laced with gothic charm and mystery. Perfect for fans of Practical Magic, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, and The Dead Romantics.
International bestselling author Mel A Rowe pens atmospheric gothic romantasy and vivid small-town stories. In between random outback road trips and hiding in Australia's Northern Territory, she writes stories with hard-won happily ever afters that feel like you're reading inside a movie.
If you love a cozy book that is immersive and drags you into a cozy little town where magic is found, then please read this book.
This is an author who doesn’t just want to tell you a story, she wants you to feel the story, to live it.
I loved the plot of this book. The MMC and the FMC are thrown together, not by choice but by faith.
This book has a soft kind of magic that is not known to the entire world. So it comes as quite the surprise for the FMC. The struggle between acceptance and denial, this paper thin line.
This book takes you on a journey. Step by step you uncover a mystery that is hundreds of years old. You get to know the FMC and MMC. Most of all you watch Chantelle find herself and figure out that all of her is worth loving.
When (not if!) you read this book, curl up in a cozy comfy spot with a blanket and a hot beverage of choice, just like the author intended. You will not regret it.
This had SUCH a strong gothic atmosphere in the beginning that I was honestly really intrigued.
A cursed manor. A trapped lord. Family secrets. Ghostly vibes. Magic tied to bloodlines and generations.
All of that absolutely worked for me at first.
What I liked
The setting carried this book HARD for me. Strathmuir Manor felt alive in that eerie old-world gothic way where the house itself almost becomes a character.
I loved: - the hidden journals - the cursed bloodline - the family history - the magical symbolism - all the “bound by blood and light” lore
Some of the writing was genuinely beautiful too.
“Love endures distance and time; it survives war, outlasts famine…”
And Lucien definitely had his moments.
The grumpy immortal lord energy? Elite at times.
The banter between him and Chantelle in the earlier chapters was honestly one of my favorite parts of the book.
I also really appreciated Chantelle’s insecurities and how grounded she felt initially. Her feeling invisible in the real world contrasted really well with being the only one who could see Lucien.
Where it lost me
Unfortunately… this just became way too long for me. I found myself getting increasingly disconnected from the story as it went on, especially in the second half. By the end, I was skimming pretty heavily just trying to get through it.
A lot of the conversations started feeling repetitive:
- Lucien pushing her away - Chantelle doubting herself - discussions about the curse - “we can’t do this” over and over
And while the gothic atmosphere was strong, the pacing really struggled for me. It often felt like the plot stalled while the same emotional beats kept cycling.
I also think the romance worked better in theory than execution for me personally. The yearning was there, but I never fully emotionally connected to them as a couple the way I wanted to.
The biggest standout... Honestly? The women.
Final Thoughts
This definitely wasn’t a bad book for me. I can absolutely see readers who love:
What a original story! I really loved the characters in this book, Chantelle is such a sweet person from the beginning with her shyness and generosity. I thought Lucien was such an asshole at the start of the book until his story was explained a bit more. Their relationship with each other was really believable, I loved the fact that it wasn’t a love at first sight type of book. The whole end of the book was so chocking to me I never would have predicted it and that was the perfect ending for me!
Thanks to The Berry Agency and Mel A Rowe for sending me this ARC of the book!
Chantelle is a librarian, Lucien is a ghost in a cursed manor. Their banter and their slow burn relationship was evverrrrythiiingg!!!! It kind of gave a beauty and the beast feeling about it. It was such a nice cozy read. I wish it wasn’t a standalone I would love to read more! I liked this authors writing style so much!
Thank you The Berry Agency for sending me an arc copy of Forget Forever to read and review
I love it!! I’m so grateful I got an arc for this. It’s such a lovely heat warning story. The ghost of I all is adorable. I do however have a big question for the author… and it’s also a huge spoiler.
Oh, to be seen. 💕 If you like cosy witches, houses with spirit, reincarnation and a broody ghost, you will love this book. This book was extremely well written, it was wholesome and charming, and Mel executed this story concisely. She knew exactly who the characters were in the beginning and who they would be in the end. I was immediately drawn in and attached to them and found the whole thing immensely entertaining. I really liked Chantelle and her stained shirts and lumpy cardigans, she was so wholesome and cosy, and her journey from hiding behind those things to standing up for herself was satisfying. I actually really enjoyed the bickering between the characters, it brought a smile to my face and I loved watching it change. It felt like a privilege to follow along as these characters finally saw each other for who they truly were, and it was romantic and tender in all senses. I was worried for a while there that we wouldn’t get a happy ending, or that something might befall the lovely Greta, and I felt Lucien’s pain and loneliness of being stuck in time so much so that I really hoped we’d get the happily ever after. Thankfully we did, and despite the little bit of predictability, it was certainly satisfying. Thanks to the author and The Berry Agency for the opportunity to read this ARC - an easy 5 star read for me!
I am a big fan of Mel A Rowe’s stories and would never miss one of them and I loved this one, so different from her last stories this one is a gothic fantasy and it is fabulous what happens when quiet, shy librarian Chantelle walks into Strathmuir Manor and meets Lord Lucien Strathmuir, handsome and rude in her eyes but then when she finds out that he is a ghost who has been left for centuries to haunt the manor house, this story takes a whole new twist for them both.
Lucien has walked this manor for over two hundred years since the curse that a witch cast on the family back in the 1500’s, very few people have been able to see him a few of his female relatives one of them Greta who still lives in the manor with him and now this wretched creature can see him.
Chantelle keeps to herself with her books and her cooking she has a couple of friends those she works with at the library and she knows Greta who lives in Strathmuir Manor and when the manor is having an open day Greta is insistent that Chantelle be part of the volunteers to help with the library in the manor but her first visit to the manor sees her fall flat on her face and meet a very rude man, how dare he speak to her like that but there is something going on when it appears that she is the only one who can see him, what is going on here?
As Chantelle is filled in on the story of the Strathmuir family Lucien decides that moving to her little cottage will be the best thing to do, encouraged by Greta soon they are forming a sort of bond if you can call it that with a ghost and a librarian as they search through old journals to see if they can find an answer to the curse and change things, of course this opens up a whole new world for them both but they cannot touch each other, where will this relationship end happy or will they lose each other and what of the answers they find, nothing that they expected.
This is a slow burn, witty and fabulous story, I loved the tension that built between Lucian and Chantelle, the emotions that built and the strength that Chantelle showed she had, with witches and spells and all sorts happening this is a story that I would highly recommend to any lover of a good romance. I loved it.
My thanks to the author for my digital copy to read and review.
From the Outback to a Haunted Manor: Mel A. Rowe’s Fantastic Genre Jump
Change can be scary, especially when a favourite author leaves their signature setting. I absolutely adore Mel A. Rowe’s rural Australian romances, so I must admit I felt a little wave of anxiety when I heard she was switching gears. However, Forget Forever proved that she can write paranormal magic and gothic mystery just as brilliantly as she writes the rugged outback.
What I have always loved about this author is her ability to give readers more than just a simple plot; she creates living, breathing communities and characters who feel like instant friends. Happily, that signature warmth is not lost here. Instead, she beautifully transports us to a brand-new setting, layering her storytelling with a captivating family secret and a touch of the supernatural.
At the heart of the book is Chantelle, a timid librarian who actively hides behind her baggy clothing and long hair. Her quiet life is turned upside down when she encounters Lucien, a gorgeous resident ghost bound to the halls of Strathmuir Manor by an ancient family curse. The twist? Chantelle is the very first outsider who can actually see him.
The dynamic between them is spectacular. I loved the witty, slow-burning tension that built between them, and it was a joy to watch their unique relationship develop right alongside the unfolding central mystery. The book is packed with historical charm, and secondary characters like Greta add so much extra life to the pages.
If I had to note one downside, it is simply a matter of personal preference: I generally prefer heavily dialogue-driven books. Because of the ghostly nature of this plot, the story naturally relies on a lot more descriptive text than I usually like to read. However, the storytelling was so witty, atmospheric, and fabulous that it easily kept me hooked. It is a wonderful trip to somewhere entirely new, and I am so glad she decided to dust off this draft and share it with us!
First, I want to thank the berry agency and Mel A. Rowe for the gifted eARC of Forget Forever to read and provide my honest and spoiler free review.
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book! When I saw that this book was perfect for readers of practical magic, The invisible life of Addie larue and The Dead Romantics, I knew I needed to sign up for this book.
The concept of having our MMC, Lucien, trapped by a family curse, doomed to haunt the halls of his family’s manor but be completely invisible to the living world seemed like such a lonely way of living. Of course, things were already looking interesting when our FMC, Chantelle, is forced into a volunteer meeting at the manor and ends up locking eyes with Lucien.
The premise of that alone already had me smiling and wanting to read more about them especially now that they’ve noticed one another. This is a slow burn story so you can expect a lot of witty banter between these two characters as Chantelle takes on the task of trying to break Lucien’s curse. I think the author did a great job at making this slow burn supernatural romance feel like a warm cup of tea. Our two MC’s and their journey together was sweet and the element of the curse felt like you could join in and try to uncover the secrets together alongside our main characters.
The more time I spent with these characters, the more I wanted everything to work out for them in a way that they could both be happy. Their natural romance was so sweet and just knowing how happy Lucien must have felt to finally be seen by someone just tugged at my heartstrings so much. I can’t wait to see what else this author comes up with.
Just finished this ARC read and wow… I’m still thinking about it 💭📖
If gothic romance, haunted manors, and aching slow burns are your thing, this book will absolutely pull you in.
Forget Forever gives the perfect blend of ghostly mystery and emotional romance, wrapped in a dreamy dark academia atmosphere. The chemistry between Chantelle and Lucien was filled with tension, yearning, and witty banter that made every interaction feel addictive.
The haunted manor setting felt atmospheric and immersive — like wandering through candlelit halls filled with secrets, curses, and lingering grief. And the slow burn? Painfully good. Every moment between them felt earned.
What I loved most was how emotional the story became underneath the paranormal elements. It wasn’t just about breaking a curse — it was about love, sacrifice, and what it means to hold onto someone you may never truly have.
Without giving too much away… expect all the feels, a few surprises, and a story that lingers. Definitely one to keep on your radar 👀✨
🖤 Tropes & vibes: 👻 Ghost x Human Romance 📚 Bookish/Librarian FMC 🏰 Haunted Manor ✨ Cottagecore x Dark Academia 🖤 Forced Proximity 💫 Forbidden Love 🔥 Slow Burn 🗡️ Clashing Personalities 💭 Yearning & Banter
Huge thank you for the opportunity to read this early — I can’t wait to see everyone else fall in love with it too!
This is my first book by Mel A.Rowe and I’m so happy I received this book!
As a character, Chantelle is instantly relatable. A quiet librarian who loves to bake, she is the perfect antithesis to Lucien who, after being a living ghost for most of his life, just wants to be seen.
Lucien is intriguing, he has lived for centuries, only being seen by one person a generation. When Chantelle comes along, we can see he’s instantly torn by the guilt of bringing an outsider into the curse but at the same time we see the joy of him finally having another person who can see and speak to him.
As Chantelle’s world is broadened, she sees Lucien for more than just the ghost caught in the curse but as the man tied to the Manor, who is desperate for the world beyond the house he’s trapped in.
I loved the banter between these two characters and the idea of witches and curses was tied into the story really well. The tension building between the characters, while at the same time contemplating the curse trapping them together forever, is emotional and the way they go back and forth on the bond really shows the strength that both characters have.
The ending for me felt a little rushed so it’s a 4/5 for this one but I really loved the characters and the story and I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more by this author.
Thank you to The Berry Agency and the author for my copy of this book to review
Lovers of a slow burn romance with some supernatural elements thrown in will enjoy this.
Our FMC is a librarian who gets recruited to work on a public visiting day to a manner in their neighbourhood. When she gets there our MMC is there being extremely rude and essentially degrading her, and when she’s finally had enough, she calls him out. However, the problem with this is he has never been seen by anyone that’s not in his family before. This leads to a quest for companionship between the two main characters and a hunt to break this curse he is under. Magic unravel as the story progresses.
For me, this was a bit too slow going. I think if 100 pages were knocked off this would’ve been more enjoyable for me as everything moved very slowly.
There were also some writing quirks that didn’t necessarily work for me such as a couple characters having repeated catchphrases. For example, in the first 15 pages of the book a character says “babes” or “hon” too many times to count and this was just distracting. The FMC was also a bit of a caricature of a poor, sweet, [pathetic] librarian BUT it was good to see her gain some agency as the book went on.
Thank you to the Berry Agency for a digital advanced copy.
This was my first book by Mel A. Rowe, and it definitely won't be my last!!!
Forget Forever is a cozy, charming story filled with soft magic, mystery, and a wonderfully slow burn romance. Chantelle, a shy librarian who was impossible not to love, and I really enjoyed watching her grow into herself throughout the story. Lucien took a little longer to win me over, but once more of his story was revealed, I was completely invested in him too.
The banter between them was fantastic, their relationship felt believable, and I loved that this wasn't an instant love romance. The small town atmosphere and hidden magic made this such an immersive read. Mel A. Rowe's writing doesn't just tell a story, it pulls you into it and makes you feel every step of the journey.
I was genuinely surprised by the ending and found it both satisfying and emotional. If you enjoy cozy fantasy, witches, reincarnation, haunted houses, broody ghosts, and romances built on truly seeing one another then this is the book for you!!!
Thank you to The Berry Agency and Mel A. Rowe for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Tropes I loved: – Supernatural romance – Ghost/haunting element – Emotional healing – Slow-burn connection – Fate/destiny
Ok!!!! I’ve read most of Mel A. Rowe’s books, so going into this one I had pretty high expectations—and it absolutely delivered.
It has such a beautiful almost whimsical feel that pulled me in right from the start and kept me wanting to ignore all things to keep reading
The story weaves in a haunting, emotional element with the presence of the undead ghost, which added such a unique layer to the romance.
The chemistry between the characters was undeniable and felt natural, not forced, making the connection even more compelling. I loved how their relationship developed alongside the mystery and emotional weight of the story.
Forget forever is one of those reads that leaves you with that soft, lingering feeling even after the final page.
Definitely a standout for me and a reminder of why I keep coming back to this author.
This is a very entertaining romance with supernatural elements. Chantelle, a mousy small-town librarian comes to the local manor to help with a charity. There she meets Lucien, the rather rude cousin of the current owner. Turns out Lucien is a ghost and Chantelle is the first person outside of the family who can see him. Maybe she can help break the curse that has been haunting the MacArloch family for centuries? The story is very entertaining and had me hooked from the start. The FMC Chantelle was very relatable and though the MMC Lucien seemed rather arrogant at first he turned out to be very likable and considerate. The story was fast paced and believable and the ending was rather surprising. Definitely a very enjoyable book with entertaining magical elements.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I was intrigued by the premise of this story and it did not disappoint.
Chantelle is a timid librarian who hides behind her hair and baggy clothing. Shaped by her past, to stay small and unseen. Lucien is a ghost, bound to haunt the halls of Strathmuir Manor by an ancient family curse.
This was such a cosy read, full of gothic charm, mystery and heart. The main characters are relatable, adding emotional depth and the author’s evocative writing style draws you straight into their world.
It’s the slowest of slow-burns, allowing Chantelle and Lucien’s relationship to develop naturally. I loved their witty banter, as well as the cast of quirky side characters who added warmth to the story.
Overall, this was a sweet, heartfelt read about healing, growth and finding love when you least expect it.
A paranormal romance that I wouldn’t call dark… Maybe gray? With so much slow burn tension between the two MC’s. Between trying to solve a curse and avoid falling in love this book is well paced for its content. Pretty sure it’s not meant to be a gripping thrilling edge of your seat, kind of book, but the kind that draws you in so deeply to the plot that no matter what you want to keep reading it!
The combination of an introverted librarian, and the dark and beauty male main character is written very well! Because what you think is a quiet, small weak individual turns out to be an intelligent, witty, sharp tongue, fierce female, hiding behind her bangs! It’s different! I like different!
All in all, it was a good time. Slow paced, slow burn, but intriguing just the same.
"Forget Forever" by Mel A. Rowe weaves a compelling tale that combines elements of ghostly mystery with a poignant romantic narrative, all set against a backdrop of dark academia. The interactions between Chantelle, a reserved librarian, and Lucien, a specter with a living essence, are charged with tension and longing, punctuated by moments of clever banter that create an engaging dynamic. Their journey extends beyond the task of breaking a curse, delving into themes of love, sacrifice, and the complexities of holding onto someone who exists just out of reach. For those who appreciate gothic romance, haunted estates, and the essence of a slow-burning connection, this book offers a captivating experience.
Thank to the Berry Agency and Mel A. Rowe for the gifted eARC to read and provide my honest review.
The story itself was really well thought out and beautifully written. As we get further into the book, more of Lucien's story, Chantelle's journey, and the history of the world are revealed. It feels like we're slowly being drawn deeper into everything alongside the characters.
I also didn't think I could love a ghost MMas much as I did. Going into the story, I wondered if the fact that Lucien was a ghost might take away from the romance or make it harder to connect with the love story, but it actually became such an important part of what made the story unique. Lucien and Chantelle's connection felt like something that continued to grow and unfold as we learned more about them.
By the end, we also get to understand the true meaning behind the title Forget Forever, and I loved the way that tied everything together.
I also loved having access to The Ritual that helped immerse me into the world. It made my reading environment feel like it was a part of the story, which added another layer to the experience and made it easier to get pulled in.
This story had me hooked and honestly couldn't put it down. The story pulls you in and makes it feel like your living right there with the characters.
A romance with a twist where his a ghost and she's a librarian, they banter and have snappy comebacks. There is a family curse and it follows so beautifully along that mystery to find out how to break it. This is a slow burn and you will be wish that they will just kiss already! Also his protective of her and a gentleman under all that grumpy. Just read it you will not be disappointed and like me at the end of the book you will wish for like a extra 50 pages just to stay in that world. it was so good
*Thank you to the berry agency for providing a digital copy to review*
As soon as I saw the premise of this book, I was like yes! A cursed Lord and a librarian, absolutely.
The whole concept of the family curse, which led Lucian to be an undead ghost, was amazing, and I enjoyed the journey of solving it. It was really unique and interesting, and I loved how the stories the characters thought were true about certain ancestors were altered as they discovered the real truth.
We’ve got forced proximity with Chantelle being one of the few people who can see Lucian, and he takes full advantage of it. They had some good banter, and I loved how she didn’t let Lucian intimidate her. Chantelle is a shy and anxious character (heavily relate), and we see her try to hide herself as well as letting other people walk over her.
Her self-doubts did start to get a bit annoying, as did the repetition of one particular thought regarding Lucian. Once was enough, but three times was too many.
I enjoyed the buildup of their relationship. It’s dual POV, and I especially enjoyed getting into Lucian’s head. I found myself getting so hooked into the story at the end, and just really enjoyed how everything was revealed.
For me, the mystery of the family curse was the star of the book, and I also enjoyed seeing Lucian & Chantelle develop as characters.
First and foremost I adored the setting and the set up of this book! I was immediately hooked. It is cozy but is also mysterious and eerie. A perfect blend that kept me intrigued for most of the book. I also have to say this is a perfect autumn read.
The writing was easy to read and the character descriptions, including the house, were so well done. Such evocative imagery! I felt there was some repetition in the second half of the book with the internal monologues. But overall I really enjoyed this book and I think my head might continue to live in this world for a bit.
I would like to thank The Berry Agency and Mel A. Rowe for sending me an E-ARC for this book
In @melarowes latest book Forget Forever, we follow Lucien, a broody ghost with a cursed past, invisible to those around him and Chantelle, a shy librarian who hides behind her hair and baggy clothes.
This gothic romance had everything I adored. The banter between the characters was delightful, the slow burn was achingly slow, the setting was moody and atmospheric.
Chantelle’s growth throughout the book was wonderful. I love how she gained the confidence to stand up for herself and encouraged Lucien find the answers regarding the family curse set upon him.
I adored Lucien’s softer side and his protectiveness over Chantelle. His family history is an integral part of the story and even though it was painful for him, I admired his strength to learn about his family curse and accept Chantelle’s help.
I adore @melarowes books and her latest is no exception. This standalone novel is the perfect book to keep you company during a quiet night in. I also highly recommend the Ritual she has included at the start of the story. You won’t regret it x
Thank you so much @theberryagency and @melarowe for the copy of the arc to read and review.
Mel A Rowe has a gift for writing characters who feel like friends by the final page, and "Forget Forever" is no exception. From the first chapter I was pulled in. The banter is sharp, the emotional beats land without ever tipping into melodrama, and the romance builds at exactly the right pace. Rowe writes the kind of hard-won happily-ever-after that actually feels earned.
What I loved most was the balance: there's real heart and vulnerability here, but also humour that had me grinning. The setting comes alive on the page in that vivid way Rowe does so well, and by the end I didn't want to leave these characters behind.
This is my first book I have read of Mel’s and also the first goth book as well, so I really didn’t know what to expect going into this.
I did enjoy this book. It was a slow burn for a large chunk of the book, however I still couldn’t put it down.
I found the writing incredibly well done, especially the subtle details woven throughout the story that slowly build toward the final 150 or so pages, where the pace completely takes off and becomes impossible to put down.
Thank you to the Berry Agency and Mel A Rowe for this ACR.
I received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review. When I saw this was a book about a ghost that falls in love with a human. I was completely sold. I could not put this book down. I was constantly thinking about it. I was completely intrigued with this whole book. I was shocked with the ending, but I absolutely loved it. I had so many questions about the curse on like how it actually works when it comes to being males, but other than that I had the best time reading this and wanted more like I didn’t want this book to end.
Forget Forever was an addictive read that transported me to different places and times. It certainly created imagery of buildings I yearn to visit one day…and also satisfied my love for reading of yearning between characters.
The layers carefully built within the story gave me hints of what was to come but still allowed for surprise and awe.
I am grateful I was provided with an ARC to review so that I was able to read this story as soon as possible.
I have read from Mel A Rowe before and loved her books. This one was new for her and holy moly I loved it. I had no idea what would happen and honestly my heart broke at the thought it could have ended differently. Thank you for the opportunity to read this early. I one hundred and one percent recommend this book. It even had me shed a few tears. It was written wonderfully and it was easy to fall inlove with the characters and the story.
This was a really nice, cozy little read! I enjoyed the characters and all their dynamics. I also really liked where the story went. The twists in the story started out feeling predictable but then they actually went in another direction without being sudden or feeling ridiculous which was good. Really good atmosphere and world building!
Thank you to The Berry Agency and Mel A Rowe for the opportunity to read this e-ARC.
I thoroughly enjoyed this charming, well-written story. Chantelle’s growth from insecurity to self-assurance was satisfying, and the witty banter made the transition into romance a joy to read. Your portrayal of Lucien’s loneliness made me root for his happiness, and despite my brief concern for Greta’s safety, the conclusion was deeply rewarding. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
