Grave Cargo by E.S. Hobbs, featuring mob enforcer Aiden McRae, is the apparent first novel in an ongoing series featuring this character, and up front, this book is an enjoyable, modern-day pulp banger.

McRae is an enforcer for a wide-ranging criminal syndicate known as The Commission. Among a few of those within The Commission, some have become concerned with McRae's reluctance to follow their orders without question or comment, with his refusal to assassinate an innocent man becoming the final straw. McRae is then framed and sentenced to prison for crimes he didn't commit.

Years later, through a strange circumstance initiated by a hauling truck wrecking and spilling hazardous waste and even more alarming contents, because it is believed The Commission is involved, McRae is provided the opportunity to gather intelligence through secret limited prison furloughs.

As McRae starts his inquiries, he soon encounters many people as dangerous as he, leading to a full-throttle run until the end of the novel.

Hobbs uses occurrences in modern-day society to build the story, which includes a sort of winding side plot to the novel that adds to the suspense and tension. Hobbs also writes in a fluid and engaging manner, never allowing the story to lull or become boring.

While this is a first installment, Hobbs does complete this tale as if just one ended battle, but with the war still raging on.

Grave Cargo is perfect for a cold winter day and his highly recommended to fans of crime fiction similar to Gregg Hurwitz's Orphan X series or Lee Child's Reacher series.

Pretty good 👍

The character reminded me of Mark Nolan, the Executioner.

Aiden does not have to be in jail though....for all the efforts he is putting in,to defend good ol USA against injustice.

I will read the next one to see the outcome...

All in All,I will still score this an A.

Good work.
