Sing Her to Sleep: A gripping and unputdownable crime fiction novel

Rate this book
She sings softly to calm her little girl as his heavy footsteps move away. She clutches her daughter’s hand tightly and breathes. They are safe now. Then she feels a sharp blow to her torso and everything dims to black…

Detective Katie Scott is enjoying a rare morning of peace when she is disturbed by reports of two bodies found at the local Pine Valley building site. Rushing over with her service dog Cisco, her blood turns to ice when she finds the skeletons of a parent and child, their hands intertwined, desperately clinging to each other. What kind of monster would do this?

Katie wastes no time pulling together her team and quickly identifies the victims by the matching silver bracelets on their wrists, each with half hearts. They are Meredith and Misty Collins, a mother and daughter who were reported missing twenty years ago. They vanished into thin air, but rumors swirled for years about the screams in the forest the night they disappeared.

Soon the case takes a shocking turn when Meredith’s husband is found dead the next day. Is the twisted serial killer hunting down possible witnesses one by one? And who is the shadowy figure who has been watching Katie’s home at night? With time running out, and those close to her keeping secrets about what happened at the Collins’ house all those years ago, can Katie stay one step ahead of the unhinged killer before another life is lost?

A completely addictive crime fiction novel for fans of Lisa Regan, Rachel Caine and Melinda Leigh. A gripping roller-coaster ride from USA Today and Amazon bestseller Jennifer Chase.

Sing Her To Sleep is book 15 in the awesome Detective Katie Scott series by Jennifer Chase. Katie is home relaxing when she is notified of 2 bodies found at the site where the new police and training facility is being built. Katie and her dog, Cisco, head to the site. Katie is shocked when she sees that the skeletons seem to be an adult and child holding hands. Who could do such a thing? They have on what appears to be matching bracelets. The two are identified by their bracelets and are a mother and her daughter, Meredith and Misty Collins. They were reported missing 20 years ago and the case was never closed. The case takes another turn when Meredith's husband is found dead the next day. Is someone killing people who might have information on the two bodies?

As Katie and her partner McGaven investigate, Katie thinks someone is watching her. She notices something in the shadows at her house. Is there someone there? Is Katie in danger? As things get too close to home, Katie and McGaven have to tread carefully. This book will shred your nerves and make you jump at noises in your house, especially towards the end. As usual, Jennifer Chase has written another unputdownable thriller featuring Katie Scott and Cisco. Sing Her To Sleep is out now and I rate it 4 stars with a high recommendation. This series is one of my favorite as I love having a dog in a leading role. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Sing Her To Sleep in exchange for a fair review. #SingHerToSleep

3.5 Stars, rounded up.

Sing Her to Sleep is a suspenseful crime fiction novel by Jennifer Chase, and also is the fifteenth book in the Detective Katie Scott series. It's the first book in the series I've read, and I feel it can be read as a standalone.

The story follows Detective Katie Scott as she tries to uncover the story behind the skeletons of a mother and daughter who went missing twenty years ago. Bodies start piling up, and adding to the tension is a shadowy figure is seen watching Katie's home at night. Katie and her service dog, Cisco, must race against time to uncover the truth and stop the unhinged killer before another life is lost.

Of course, Cisco was my favorite character. I would love for him to come and live at my house! I struggled a bit when the story seemed to get bogged down by extraneous explanations that made it lose some cohesiveness. However, Sing Her to Sleep had a lot of suspense, which I liked. For those who enjoy some romance, this book had that, too. I can see why so many readers love this series, but I wish the editor had done some cutting and created a tighter, faster paced and more suspenseful book.

Thank you, #Bookouture, for providing this book for consideration and review via #NetGalley. All opinions are my own. Sing Her to Sleep has an expected publication date of February 16, 2026.

I don't even know really where to start with this, because once again i'm reeled in to Katie's story about her life, her work and well Cisco (Retired German Shepherd Military K9). This series by Jennifer is one of those once you pick it up you just can't put it down, while you cook your dinner, or enjoying a hot drink, walking around the house and so on.

I had forgotten about the fact that she was finally thinking about herself and finding happiness with John after everything that had happened with Chad, was I guttered that things didn't work out with Chad well yes I was, but I feel like her and John are a much better fit.

The way that Jennifer described the first two victims about them running into the woods, hands holding and never letting go to the final last moments of their lives was unbelievable and I didn't expect it to hit me how it did. Did I walk into my daughter's room while she was sleeping to have cuddles after this? Well yes I did cause I just needed some snuggles.

So many different aspects to what was happening was something that had me reeling at all the facts, the fact that they're using drones now to map out the scenes and locations is pretty cool as well.

My mind is spinning full out by 21% with the events that happened (I'm not going into these cause then you will learn more than what you should if you read this book, which I recommended this book and the whole series).

Old murder victims, with kind of new murder victims with newer victims. I am lost without words. What did happen? Along the way I have thought and thought (all awhile my reasonings are all wrong) and what could be the answers to the case. The newer crime scene looks similar to the old crime scenes as well.

"Who was the person she saw in the woods at the construction site? And who rigged up a trap that was meant to cause more harm than injury?" Katie

25% into the story I was shocked with the events that happened once again, it didn't take long for trouble to happen for Katie. But really it wasn't that much trouble when you read about it. She was just given answers and things to look at, and she was returned safe and sound.

"Her dreams bothered her. This case concerned her. The suspects troubled her. The crime scenes disturbed her." Katie

"Become a police detective: It'll be fun, they said" Gav

The story itself was so well written, the events that happened in the past and present are so well written, placed and described.

One of my most favourite parts as I always say is that this series follows on from where the last story ended, there isn't any of these skip 6 months, 2 years and many more. It all follows through and you never miss any of the personal story lines from Katie, Gav and the rest of the characters.

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookoutour & also Jennifer for another chance to arc read this series (it isn't the first book) and I'm sure that it won't be the last book.

Sing Her to Sleep by Jennifer Chase
Detective Katie Scott #15

~ Powerful prologue packs a punch setting the scene for a cold case I really wanted to find the answers to ~ Another intense, intricate, interesting crime situation for Katie and her team to solve ~

What I liked:
* Katie: ex-military K-9 trainer & handler, cold case police detective, good friend, puzzle solver, works for her uncle the sheriff, loves her K-9 partner, suffers from PTSD, strong, dedicated, independent, in a relationship with John
* Cisco: Katie’s black German Shepherd K-9 partner who was with her in war and was discharged into her arms. He’s there for her no matter what, companion to Katie, skilled at his job, loving and protective, helps ground Katie – loved by all
* Sean: Katie’s work partner, supportive, good sense of humor, able to read Katie, in a committed relationship with Denise, loves Cisco, dedicated, protective, a good man
* John: forensic supervisor, ex-SEAL, intelligent, strong, protective, lethal, have been intrigued by him in the past, seems a good fit for Katie and reads her well, I look forward to finding out how things will progress
* Sheriff Wayne Scott: raised Katie after her parents deaths, lost his wife to murder, always wanted to be a police officer, loved by Katie and those that serve with him, played a part in this story, wonder if he will have romance show up in his future
* That the story grabbed me in the prologue and kept me hooked till the end
* The police procedural aspects
* Finding out who Misty and Meredith were, who killed them and several other people, and what the reason was for the murders
* The dark twisted tale that proved to be more complicated and compelling than I first thought it would be
* The way the team works together

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about and how what happens during childhood can have an impact forever
* Having empathy for a few of the children that were harmed though I couldn’t condone some of their adult behavior

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This fifteenth installment in the compelling Detective Katie Scott series, Sing Her to Sleep, opens with a haunting tragedy. A mother and daughter vanish without a trace. Sadly, their remains are discovered decades later when a new building project disturbs the earth that has kept their whereabouts unknown.

Detective Katie Scott, alongside her loyal service dog Cisco and her steadfast partner McGaven, is immediately pulled into the long-cold case. It doesn’t take long for the team to identify the victims as Meredith and Misty Collins, whose disappearance had once devastated their community before fading into unresolved history. But the grim discovery doesn’t end there. In fact, another body, that of Meredith’s husband, is soon found as well.

As always, Katie’s personal journey adds emotional depth to the investigation. A military veteran living with PTSD, Katie relies heavily on Cisco, her service dog in the field. However, Cisco’s role in her life extends far beyond his service duties; he serves as her anchor during quieter, more vulnerable moments. Their bond remains one of the most captivating aspects of this series. At the same time, Katie’s loving relationship with John Blackburn, the forensic supervisor in the crime lab, introduces a refreshing sense of warmth and stability into her life. Witnessing her cautious opening of her heart as she navigates such difficult and often heartbreaking cases provides a satisfying balance to the story’s intensity.

This latest entry delivers the layered suspense, emotional depth, and steady character development that readers have come to expect from the series. The decades-spanning mystery unfolds at a gripping pace, with each revelation tightening the tension until the final pieces fall into place.

Longtime fans will appreciate the depth and heart woven into the suspense, while new readers will find plenty to keep them turning pages late into the night. This is another strong, satisfying installment that proves the Detective Katie Scott series still has so much to offer.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Sing Her to Sleep by Jennifer Chase is one of those crime thrillers that pulls you in fast. It’s dark, tense, and just unsettling enough to keep you thinking about after you put it down.
The story follows Detective Katie Scott as she dives into a seriously disturbing case involving revenge murders and secrets that should’ve stayed buried. Of course, nothing is ever simple, and as the investigation unfolds, it starts hitting way too close to home for Katie. That’s one of the best parts of the book, she doesn’t feel like a generic “tough detective.” She’s layered, dealing with her own trauma while trying to stay focused on the case. She’s strong, but she’s also human, and that makes her easy to root for.
The atmosphere is where this book really shines. There’s this steady sense of tension that builds chapter by chapter. The chapters are short and punchy, which makes it dangerously easy to say, “Just one more,” until suddenly it’s 2 a.m, which I did a couple of times.
The investigative details feel realistic too, probably because Chase has a background in criminal justice. It adds authenticity without bogging the story down in too much technical jargon.
The villain is genuinely creepy, not over-the-top or cartoonish, just disturbingly believable. Instead of relying on shock value, the story digs into the psychological side of things, which makes it even more chilling.
At its core, the book is about trauma and resilience as much as it is about catching a killer. As Katie gets closer to the truth, the emotional stakes ramp up, and the ending delivers a sad twist that feels both shocking and well-earned.
If there’s one small downside, it’s that the story wrapped up a bit too quickly for me. But honestly, that doesn’t take much away from the overall experience.
If you like dark crime fiction with a strong female lead and plenty of psychological tension, this one’s definitely worth picking up. Jennifer Chase knows how to keep readers hooked right up to the last page.

The first scene is as heartbreaking as it is chilling when skeletal remains are accidentally dug up by a construction crew. It is the remains of a mother and daughter who disappeared twenty years ago.

Detective Katie Scott and her team are called to this scene. The gruesome scene will be indelibly imprinted on their minds forever, especially since the mother and daughter's hands are gripped together. I almost cried.

Be careful what you think or assume about this story because things are not as cut and dry as they seem. After the discovery, it is evident that someone is not happy that the past has been unearthed.

This is part police procedural, thriller and mystery all packed into one neat package. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a cold case brought back to life and justice served, even if it is cold and long overdue.

The characters in this series are very easy to like, including one of my favorite K-9 characters, Cisco. He often steals the show with his heroics. I also enjoy how this author builds the characters' personal lives so they are more than just law enforcement personnel. It makes me feel invested in their personal lives, while also making the characters seem more real. I am especially glad to see Katie finding happiness again.

This gripping crime drama will haunt your dreams while also requiring you to use a little of your own sleuthing skills as they work toward a resolution of this long overdue cold case.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my
copy of this book.

When the bodies of a mother and daughter are found, detectives Katie Scott and her partner McGaven open up the cold case. With clues sending them to near fatal traps, mystery men and links to a construction site, can they get to the bottom of things?

Really enjoyed this. I have felt that the new budding romance between Katie and forensic expert John, has been simmering for a while and I was glad to have this new aspect.
The descriptions particularly of forest scenes are vivid and it felt easy to picture what was going on. The tension and frustration of the characters came across clearly and as I turned the pages and they hit another dead end I felt it too. There was the right mix of excitement where I couldn’t turn pages fast enough and slower parts, which helped and added to what the Katie was feeling. As always Cisco was a favourite! The partnership between Katie and McGaven and the bond they have was clear. There are other characters too, but not too many they keeping track feels difficult. The killers reveal was a shock, not who I expected at all.
No spoilers but there is a particular scene, where my heart was in my mouth and I thought it was the end for Katie! Wow!
I have read all the books in this series and they are one of the best. I’m invested and can’t wait to read what happens next. A new reader could easily read this as standalone though.

Sing Her to Sleep is another gripping instalment in the Katie Scott series, and it wastes absolutely no time pulling you straight into the darkness. The opening scene is chilling, and the discovery of the mother and child’s skeletons — still clinging to each other after twenty years — sets such a haunting tone for the entire book.

Katie is as determined and sharp as ever, and I loved seeing her dive into a case that feels both deeply emotional and incredibly unsettling. The matching bracelets, the rumours about screams in the forest, the sudden death of the husband — every new detail adds another layer of tension. And the shadowy figure watching Katie’s home at night gives the story that extra jolt of unease.

Jennifer Chase keeps the pace tight, the stakes high, and the twists coming. The blend of cold‑case mystery and present‑day danger works really well, and Katie’s bond with Cisco continues to be one of my favourite parts of the series.

This one has everything you want in a crime thriller: atmosphere, heart, and a plot that keeps you turning pages long after you meant to stop. Fans of Lisa Regan and Melinda Leigh will feel right at home.

Some books start quietly. Others immediately have you on the edge of your seat. Some create an atmosphere. Others hit you like a sledgehammer.

This book left me with my mouth open and covered in goosebumps. I could barely hold back my tears.

I still sometimes can’t believe how cruel and heartless people can be, but all you have to do is open a newspaper or turn on the TV to be confronted with it in real life as well. And no, unfortunately we don’t have Katie Scott and her colleagues in the real world. Real life doesn’t work that way.

Thankfully, these baddies remain between the pages of a book, and there is Katie Scott and her team to grab the culprits by the collar.

Once again, they put themselves in dangerous situations to make their hometown a safer place and to protect its residents as much as possible.

As usual, the forensic team works tirelessly to analyse the evidence as quickly as possible and support the detectives.

It goes without saying that Cisco cannot be missing either — once again, he proves to be invaluable.

For some characters, it was touch and go, and they narrowly escaped disaster.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom. The author also provided some touching and heartwarming moments. Combined with the tension, these elements once again resulted in a fantastic book. 5 stars.

Thank you.

Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the chance to read Sing her to sleep by Jennifer Chase. This is Book 15 of Detective Katie Scott, and is one of my favourite series because it is a combination of thriller, police procedural and K9! The opening scene pulls you into the story immediately; with a mother and child running through the forest, and then years later their bones are discovered during construction. Katie and her partner, McGaven are pulled in to investigate, but soon more bodies are discovered, and it soon becomes personal for Katie. Katie has started a new relationship with Forensic investigator John Blackburn, and while I liked Katie's previous relationship with Chad, I think John is a better fit for Katie, and am really enjoying seeing the romance develop between them. Of course my favourite is still Katie's K9 Cisco, who once again saves Katie in true hero fashion!
I believe you could read this as a standalone as the author has provided plenty of background information, but I recommend reading the series in the order as the books are fast, easy to read and the characters develop more fully over time!

Katie is balancing the case with wondering if she is in danger. Always love when the ante is upped when things are personal. And they become even more personal as the investigation grows.

For those that love animals in books, you need to grab this one. Katie’s dog Cisco is an integral part of things. So not just for show. I love their bond and that he’s not just there for show. I also love that the series was based around Katie and Chad, but she’s been able to move on and forge a relationship with John. And at one particular moment in the book, she’s witnesses something that strengthens their bond. It’s these real life moments outside of the case that makes the characters so relatable.

The book moves quickly as it straddles being both a mystery and a police procedural. It’s tense and gripped me and I honestly had no idea who the killer was or why they killed.

Whether you’re reading your first book of the series and enjoying the case or this is another in a long line and you’re also loving the emotion in the book. you’ll come out satisfied.

Detective Katie Scott is back with her partner in cold crimes. They have just gotten into their morning routine of finding a case. Before drinking their morning coffee and conversation phones ring. Construction workers at the Pine Valley building site. With the bulldozer digging things came to a sudden stop when bones and a skull came to the surface. Calls are made for a forensic anthropologist. Katie loads Cisco, her K-9 into the Jeep and out the door they start on a very strange case.
Sing Her to Sleep will be published on February 16, 2026 by Bookouture. I was able to read Chase’s latest novel via NetGalley. Such an impression she made for me in her first novel I have read in the series. It is #15 and now I am certain to begin at the start. It was fascinating and kept me on edge throughout the entire book. The drama was cryptic and on edge. This is one for suspense readers not to miss!

I have read most of the books in this series and this is a good addition to it.

Katie has to pull her team together to find out what happened to the mother and daughter who clung together, even in death. It helps that she has an amazing work partner in Gav and now also has a partner in John as well. He gives her the space she needs and gentle support too, despite his own heavy workload.

There is quite a lot going on in this book, and things hinted about that might have caused trauma to certain people in their pasts. Shadowy figures who are connected in ways that you may not expect.

This was a solid book of this genre. I always enjoy reading about Katie and the people in her life, and Cisco too, of course! He is a big part of the story, and I love reading about his love, loyalty and instincts. Dogs are pretty amazing :)

4.5 stars from me.

Detective Katie Scott is called to investigate what seems to be murders.... two bodies are found buried on a building site.
Another body is found, and it is found that the third body is related to the other two.

Katie is being watched closely, and the race is on to stop even more murders.

I just had to find out how all of these events tied up in the end!
I was hooked from the first chapter, having read previous books from the series, and Katie being a firm favourite of mine.
I love her easy relationship with her partner, they make a good team and solid police work solves the cases they are investigating.

Katie's personal life is also good, and you can tell it is a passionate and loving relationship.

I am looking forward to the next instalment of the series.

4/5 stars from me.

Another good book in this series featuring Detectives Scott and McGaven, forensics John and most importantly, Cisco! I found this one more of a slow burn than usual, taking a bit longer to build up to the main storylines. We get more of an insight into the developing relationship between Katie and John, and that is becoming a more important feature of the series. This one begins when developers find some skeletons, believed to be a mother and daughter, still with interlocked hands. The plot becomes as much about the property as about the murders and someone is willing to do a lot to stop the investigations. I liked the introduction of Buck, as a mysterious character, although some of the dealings with him were lacking in credibility. One downside is there is not enough Cisco in this one- I like when he is much more involved!

Another book about a strong female detective. I really enjoy this series. Katie and McGaven are on the hunt for the murderers of a mother and daughter pair found in a construction zone. Katie is a magnet for danger and there was plenty of it in this story. She’s kidnapped and attacked, in separate instances, all while trying to find out who the victims are and why they were killed.

Beyond the murder, there’s so much more to the characters. Katie’s partnership with McGaven is a special bond. And now that Katie and John are together, we learn more about Katie on a personal level too.

I will definitely continue to pick up more books in this series.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy of this book.

Disappointed

I have been following this series from the beginning and look forward to each new book. The writing in this book was stilted, usually Jennifer Chase’s books are written very smoothly. The transitions between scenes was choppy. Scenes would be left dangling and incomplete before jumping to another scene. In one part Katie mentioned that the Medical Examiner had been out of sorts on a previous visit, but there was no follow up. After Katie heard the antagonist threatening people, one of whom she thought might be Detective Ventura, when they went to speak to him later, she did not mention the possible threat to him or give him any warning. This book is not like Ms Chase’s usual writing.

This one had me hooked from the first page! I love watching as Katie and McGavin solve cases, and this one was particularly twisty! With the bodies of Misty and her daughter uncovered after 20 years, Katie and McGavin definitely had their work cut out for them with this case.

This series is full of characters that you easily love and root for. Along with Cisco, the amazing K9 sidekick, the characters, and the twisty plot, this story and this series have you hooked from beginning to end, and while you can jump in at any time, I think after reading one, you'll want to go back and read all the others. I can't wait to see what case Katie and McGavin are going to be in the middle of next!

This is a great crime thriller.
Katie and McGaven are called out when two bodies are found at a local building site. They seem to have been there for many years and when they find out they were mother and daughter, buried together, Katie is determined to find the killer.
With a mysterious man abducting Katie so he can talk to her and another man dressed in black who seems to disappear into thin air, Katie and McGaven have their hands full.
Of course Cisco is on hand to help with the investigation and John and Katie are now together which is good for both of them.
This is a gripping crime thriller that I really enjoyed.

Action packed!

The prologue pulls you instantly and has you invested, then hold onto your hat because in the latest installment of Detective Katie Scott, she and the rest of the team find themselves in danger continually as they try to unravel the latest cold case.

There are a lot of players on the board, so you may need to take notes to keep them straight in your mind. As the body count continues to climb, the when, and why of it all has you gripped to know what set off this chain of events 20 years ago and continued to current day.

A major construction project that benefits the law enforcement division of Pine Valley is halted when bodies are discovered on the site.
Katie and Gav are on it and the clues row there but despite moving the pieces around constantly the story remained hidden.
I struggled just like Katie to make sense of what exactly was occurring.
I was like Cisco spinning around wondering who is responsible for what.
I loved the developments between Katie and John.

A definite must read book and series!!

An absolutely amazing series full of action, drama, mystery, suspense, and intriguing twists that will hook you from beginning to end. This was one of most difficult cases for the Cold Case Detectives. It kept getting more complicated the further they investigated, as well as becoming more personal. It's another fantastic thriller that you certainly won't want to miss!
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.

Skeletons of a mother and daughter discovered holding hands after 20 years… and nobody knew they were even still out there The opening alone had me gripped and I could not put this down!

Cisco the service dog is an absolute highlight and Katie Scott remains one of the best detectives in the genre.
The pacing slows a little in the middle but the tension builds beautifully and the final pieces falling into place made it worth it.

Overall 4 ⭐ from me and though it is book 15 in the series it can work as a standalone

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC.

I really like the Katie Scott books and the characterisation, especially Cisco! I loved Buck right from the start and was rooting for his character throughout. The plotting is interesting and there are quite a few twists in the story. The build up of suspense kept me hooked with a bit of a rollercoaster ride right to the end. Another good addition to this very popular series. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

This is one of my favourite series, and I love catching up with Katie and her dog, Cisco. Life has improved for Katie with her relationship with John. Katie and her partner, McGaven, are called to the site of a new police training building after workers discover the skeletons of a mother and child, along with another body. They later find another at the family’s rundown farm. This case will be tough, as someone doesn’t want Katie to uncover the truth. A very fast-paced read!

Sing Her to Sleep is another fast-paced, installment in the Detective Katie Scott series. Jennifer Chase once again delivers a gripping case that blends tension with deeply personal stakes.

Lots of twists and turns as Katie and her team try to figure out a decade’s old murder after skeletons are found at a construction site.

All an all this is a great addition to the Katie Scott series.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.

I’d like to thank netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I have always been a fan of this high octane series, and this one did not disappoint. Katie, Gav, John and Cisco are on the case when multiple skeletons are found on the soon to new police training facility. How do they and her uncle, the sheriff all connect? Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Detective Katie Scott is back! I’ve been a long time fan of the series, and always look forward to each new case with an amazing cast of characters. The partnerships are my favorite out of any detective series I’ve read, and they just keep getting better. This book had a ton of harrowing moments that kept me on the edge of my seat, and I didn’t want to put it down!

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest feedback!

Although the title didn’t really match the storyline, it still lived up to my expectations. Detectives Scott and McGaven are assigned a 20 year old cold case after two bodies are discovered. The task seems almost insurmountable, but they are a dynamic duo. I enjoyed the romantic aspects of the book as well and hope to see more
