Once Lost Always

Two arrows, once mission, an eternity of consequences.

For Ebony Rose, the newly appointed huntress for the Moriah Mountains tribe of Neverland, family is everything. Whether it be through helping her mother make and deliver medicine, trying her best to follow in her father and brother's footsteps as a warrior, or dreaming of a life of freedom as the first lost girl, she puts her heart into everything she does.

But when a single arrow marked with pixie dust kills a member of the tribe, she is forced to lead the way down a path she never expected to exist:

She must kill Peter Pan.

With justice for her family, her position as a huntress and the stability of Neverland's universe on the line, Ebony Rose must join forces, albeit reluctantly, with Captain Hook and his arrogant first mate, Flint, to journey into the darkness of Neverland and stop Peter before his new use for the island's magic threatens their very existence.

But is it really that simple? Is there more to this mystery than she or the tribe know? And will she be able to find and fight for the truth before it's too late for any of their dreams to come true?

This author is incredibly talented, with so many illustrious details gracing every page. She is witty and sharp, and crafts a whole host of unique characters that also seem quite familiar as they all exist within the magical realm of Neverland. The story itself is action-packed and multifaceted, even if the plot occasionally lacks direction at times. Regardless of that, I still rate this book a hearty five-stars for its incredibly creative imaginative qualities and the way it manages to breathe new life into a multi-generational Disney classic. Would totally recommend!

I was gifted this book by the author in exchange for an honest review!

Once Lost Always was inspired by the song Lost Boys by Ruth B which I was absolutely obsessed with when it came out. So naturally I was very excited to dive into this story about Ebony Rose, the new Huntress for the Tribe on Neverland. When a tribesman is found dead and it looks like Peter Pan is to blame, Ebony is tasked with hunting him down. But here’s the thing, Ebony loves Peter Pan and has always dreamed of one day maybe becoming a lost girl. So how is she supposed to believe that he could become a killer? Her journey takes her well beyond her home, and, in order to save what she loves, she has to discover what it is she’s fighting for.

I actually enjoyed this book quite a lot. It was magical and left me feeling warm on the inside. But it still has its share of problems. This book is about 500 pages and it could honestly be 300; it gets a bit repetitive and there are a few exchanges that could have been cut. I also wasn’t invested in the characters; they weren’t believable and no matter how hard I tried I just couldn’t pin them down. I felt like the story was changing as it went on without any foreshadowing as well, which left me, and arguably the characters, at a loss for the direction of the story.

Still, overall this was a fun read and I’m definitely interested to see what is going to come from Ife in the future. I give Once Lost Always a solid three stars and definitely recommend checking it out!

Such a magical retelling of the world of Neverland. Ife really captures the magic of Neverland while also highlighting the hardships of growing up and taking responsibility for ones own destiny
