OMG this is not my normal genre of choice. I was intrigued by the author's reels on social media and wanted to give it a try. I do not regret it all. There are no words to express how much I enjoyed this book. This is not my normal genre of choice, I'm so glad this was my first book in this genre. The story revolves around a family with secrets. The plot twists and turns kept me reading not wanting to put it down. I felt so many different emotions while reading. Intrigue, fear, anticipation, hope and anxiety. The author's respect for the Magick system was awesome. He really made you feel like you were a part of the system and part of the story. I loved how he kept the romance clean. The homages to Gen X favorites from our youth brought back memories and warm feelings of a time when life was innocent and fun. I can't wait to read more by the author.
Horror Without Limits: A Mirror You Won’t Look Away From
The Mirror by Reuben Shupp is wildly creative in the way it moves between different points of view, allowing us to experience the story through the characters rather than simply observe them. That shifting perspective makes the emotional moments hit harder and gives even the strangest parts of the novel a surprising sense of intimacy.
This feels like the kind of Stephen King book I’ve been waiting for, but, for me, even better. The story never loses momentum. There is a constant sense of discovery, dread, and fascination, paired with a no-holds-barred imagination that seems willing to go anywhere.
Schupp’s descriptions are vivid without losing the human thread of the story. Even the terrifying realm of the Horrorscape feels strangely relatable because we experience it so closely from the protagonist’s point of view. The terror may be surreal, but the reactions to it feel real.
And the ending—no spoilers—will leave you staring at the page for a moment after you finish.
Inventive, immersive, unsettling, and impossible to look away from, The Mirror is the kind of horror novel that reminds you just how far imagination can take you.
The Mirror is a retro-vibe thriller/horror by Reuben Shupp.
Reuben's stories bring me back to my teens, when I was obsessed with reading horror books from authors' like R.L Stine and Christopher Pike.
The Mirror focuses on protagonist Christian, who moves to the town his mother grew up in, after a storm destroys their family home. Christian finds the town strange and stuck in the past. He meets and befriends Marcey, a local girl who has strange dreams, and her friends Junior and Frank. These two bring humour and shenanigans to the book.
This friendship group quickly gets embroiled in a local mystery, and the discovery of a strange mirror in an abandoned house quickly escalates to a race against time. The teens try to figure out why a scary witch is stuck in a mirror, and why the town has the deep mysteries it does - some of those mysteries landing closer to home than Christian expects.
The Mirror is fast-paced, with a twisty plot that left me intrigued and guessing. Some of the twists I didn't expect at all, and the ending! Definitely a massive surprise.
Quick warning - this books contains creepy crawlies, namely, spiders.
Christopher Pike / R.L. Stine make room for Reuben Shupp move over because we have another scary writer on our hands. In the Mirror, we follow Christian, who’s fsmily is moving in with her father or his house. Once there he meets Marcey and her two friends Junior and Frank. Hearing about a local mystery. They come across an abandon house in the woods with a creepy mirror inside. But what they find makes the a local legend real. Why is there a witch stuck in the mirror and what else is the town hiding? I felt that the story was good enough to keep going. But it didn’t really hold my attention. But Shupp does write like he is like with Pike and Stine and then story had mystery, magic and more to keep your interests going.
✨Thank you, Reuben for laughing at my very real, very valid fear of spiders... it's not very nice at all. In all seriousness, The Mirror is an absolute masterpiece of dark suspense. The pacing is relentless, the atmosphere is suffocating in the best way possible, and it will rent space in your head long after you turn the last page. 4.5/5 stars! Go grab your copy today—just don't ask Reuben to hold a spider for you.
An enjoyable fast paced dive into adventure and magic. I loved when it was from the mother's perspective, and wished for more of her view point. I liked the creativity and the world building, and how the magic was conceptualized!
