This is the second and final book in the Whiplash series.
Ruby's made her decision, and now Julian will have to reckon with it. Hidden motives, deep family secrets, and ultimate redemption will all play a part in the backlash.
Note: Much like Whiplash, this book is completely fictitious and contains graphic violence, scenes of violent rape, and strong language. It's not intended for readers under 18 years of age or readers who may be offended by the depiction of the aforementioned elements.
This was certainly a page turner, but I was just too frustrated with some aspects of this book. I don't know if the slave/master trope is for Me, and Julian was especially despicable. Solid writing and engaging story.
I read Whiplash and I was eagerly anticipating the release of Backlash so much so, I stalked Ms. Towers on Facebook to find out when I could get my hands on a copy. Fortunately, I was gifted with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I was so completely and utterly frustrated with Lily throughout this book. At 63% I wanted to toss my Kindle against a hard surface. A reader wants to cheer for the heroine but Lily made such questionable choices that made it difficult to side with her. The reader understands her plight but even so, it was challenging for me to cheer for her.
We pick up with Lily and Julian forging somewhat of a relationship (if you can call it that, she really has no choice in the matter). Julian offers Lily her freedom if she agrees to become his. The overall contradiction of this is humorous. She's a slave, she's always his but somehow, Julian thinks that if he allows Lily to assert some sort of free will, she will come to love him. At some point, you do root for Julian and Lily. You really do hope that despite the odds, they both come out of this arrangement unscathed however, Julian is a monster. He never changes and his actions remain appalling. There were some twists present in the book that I didn't see coming but I have many questions regarding these things. Ms. Towers presents many instances where both Whiplash and Backlash would make for a great book club read since there are many things that go unanswered and the reader merely uses their imagination to assume the outcome. There were also a few inconsistencies present but nothing so horrible that it detracts the reader from following the storyline. I can't list them because I'd be giving away part of the conclusion.
Ms. Towers, you've done a fantastic job of making me hate a book. Not because the storytelling was awful but because you made the characters so hard to connect with. The myriad of troubling decisions was hell on my psyche. I couldn't root for one person in this tale. The job of a great writer is to cause readers to have a series of reactions and trust me, I endured a plethora of emotions. You have a fan in me and I eagerly anticipate your next release. A job well done for creating a tale that will stay with the reader long after The End.
Man, I feel badly giving this 2 stars when most of the book was three stars, but I just can't justify it with the ending. The book for me fell apart maybe around the 60% mark? Well, to be honest, it started before then when Julian married his fiancée Tessa, or shall I say "Contessa" (sounds like a pretentious name for a countess), because she threatened to tell Ruby how Julian used to be obsessed with Ruby's sister, Mercy. Julian treated Tessa like absolute shit, fondled her genitals in a way that seemed to mock how she would get wet for him whereas he felt no desire for her, and later raped her (though she did want to have sex with him, but not in that way I guess). Oh, and he also
Yvie Towers had Julian start doing some very morally questionably things for a hero around the middle of the book. I almost felt like she was playing with my emotions about who/which couple I was supposed to root for: Beau and Lily, or Ruby & Julian (Ruby was Lily's prostitute name, but Julian called her that even when she was done being a prostitute). Then Julian seemed to soften towards Tessa, finding her very desirable & pleasant (when before he thought she was an absolute bitch), and then Ruby felt like the other woman to me.
~~~Spoilers Abound Below~~~
Then, Colette was killed by Mercy with a bullet meant for Julian instead (I don't know for sure; I reread the section.). It didn't make any sense why she needed to die. Then, we find out that Ruby's child is actually Beau's and not Julian's. How does Mercy recognize this before Ruby? But most importantly, Beau being the father didn't make any sense at all because she hadn't had sex with him in a while (only once I believe)! She had just been having a lot of sex with Julian. I mean, unless I missed something??
When she gives birth to her daughter, she brings her to Beau and tells her she loves him. It seemed like at this point, she'd end up with Beau. Wrong! She ends up with nobody!!! I went in, thinking this was a romance between a master & a slave, only to find out that it wasn't a romance. I don't even know what happens to Julian and Beau at the end; all I know is that Julian got shot. Did the men die?
The novel ends with them living in Vivian's mansion that is set behind the Devereaux plantation with the 2 kids (Beau's daughter & Julian's and Mercy's daughter). The epilogue also seems to be in Mercy's POV (though the author should have written it at the top), but then the speaker says "I feel like I can feel Mercy's and Vivian's too...", which is really confusing.
Had I known how this book would end, I would have never read the duet. I just don't know why the author would end it that way. Couldn't Beau at least have survived? Don't market this as a romance if the girl doesn't end up with anybody! It was just disappointing.
This book had a lot of drama, but not in an entertaining way. More in a this isn't necessary way. Take Colette's pointless death. It didn't add anything to the story other than my annoyance.
Also, there were multiple times I wished for my details of the setting, descriptions of the mansion, to give it more atmosphere, and maybe even a Gothic atmosphere would have been cool.
At the beginning, I wish I had read this immediately after the first book because it had been 3 years. I was able to borrow the first book via KU and just insert names to help myself catch up with the story.
I would give it 5 stars, but the ending was disappointing. I actually read the book so fast that I'm sure I missed many details. I have been waiting for it to come out for so long! But all in all the book had me going into shock multiple times. The relationship between Julian and Ruby is so complicated... Julian is so complicated. I don't know how to feel lol but I know that I'll be rereading cause it was too much to take in this first time through.
This story had so many emotional twists and turns and it was all so delicious !! Yvie Towers did an amazing job with this follow up to Whiplash. What happened to Beau, though ????? I want more !
This is part two of Mercy, Lilly, Julian and Beau's story.
All the secrets come out now and the reason Julian is so drawn to Lilly is that he knew her sister first Mercy. This was a real emotional roller coaster of a ride in book 2. Julian show just how cruel he can be when he thinks he has lost Ruby.
This story is less about love and more about obsession. I was sad that at the end not even one of the sisters ended up with love in their lives. This definitely is no romantic story. Nevertheless is an engaging read until the final page. Definitely worth a read if you don't mind dark stories.
Good idea but not coherent, storyline was a little confusing, Main male character was the worst written, I think I know where the author wanted to go but it did not quite get there. And what is the confusing timeline that the baby was another man’s ? Worst so called plot twist ending ever ,for both sisters.
I wasn't sure how to write my review without any spoilers, so here goes and without any spoilers. I waited patiently for Backlash and it was worth the wait! I love Yvie Towers as she does to me what I expect all the authors I love to do to me….I want to feel every emotion possible, I want to be pushed beyond my comfort zone, I want to live in the story and I want the story to stay with me long after I have read it. Yvie Towers does just that, read Backlash and enjoy the story telling.
Book 2 was a great read as well. It was a story in hope and love and perserverance! Ms. Towers, thank you for writing a historically accurate novel while staying true to the messiness of human emotions of love, rage, self-hate, tenderness. People like Lily, Beau, Mercy, Vivian, and Julian really existed during the antebellum period of slavery. I'm glad you told their story.
I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a twisted love story. Although the setting is Pre-Civil war era, the book sucks you in and you imagine the story playing out in present day. It's beautifully written. I'm actually sad that I am done reading it. Can't wait for Yvie Towers next book!
I am not sure where I should start. I didn't like it. It came off too soapy. Everyone was sexing everyone, forbidden love, unrequited love, obsessive love, platonic love, sadistic love, dead sisters returning, bastards, shoot outs, murders, etc. The diction was also a little off for me. It was too modern and kept taking me out of the story's setting. Idk, I didn't care for it.
This is the sequel to Whiplash and the story picked up where it ended in the first book. I found parts of the story unrealistic, however it was an enjoyable read.
Definitely not what I expected, so many things to take in. The ending for me was disappointing, I love a happy ending at least romantically I do, not saying the ending wasn't happy, just not the one I expected.
I really got caught up with the book , just couldn't put it down . It just draws u in .loving each character and hating some . It would have you crying ...love could be such a destructive weapon. At lease for Julian...this book is a must read again
