Canadian born, Manly Palmer Hall is the author of over 150 published works, the best known of which are Initiates of the Flame, The Story of Healing, The Divine Art,Aliens Magick and Sorcery The Secret Teachings of All Ages, and An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy.
He was also the author of a masonic curiosity, The Lost Keys of Freemasonry in 1923, more than thirty years before he joined a lodge. The preface of later editions states "At the time I wrote this slender volume, I had just passed my twenty-first birthday, and my only contact with Freemasonry was through a few books commonly available to the public." Later, in 1944, he wrote The Secret Destiny of America which popularized the myth of a masonic purpose for the founding of the USA. In 1950 he weighed in again on the meaning of Freemasonry with his booklet: Masonic Orders of Fraternity.

The Book of Stoicism is an extensive anthology that brings together a wide array of classic Stoic writings curated by Manly P. Hall. The collection features works not only by Hall himself but also by other notable thinkers such as Charles Harold Herford, William L. Davidson, and Gilbert Murray. The result is a sweeping overview of Stoicism’s core principles—resilience, rationality, virtue, and inner steadiness—presented through essays, historical context, and thematic reflections.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its breadth and accessibility. It serves as both an entry point for newcomers and a deep reference for seasoned philosophy readers. The anthology provides valuable insight into how Stoicism evolved, how it contrasts with philosophical counterparts like Epicureanism, and how its practical tools can still be applied to modern life. For readers seeking timeless guidance on how to live with clarity and purpose, this volume delivers a rich and comprehensive resource.

That said, the book’s density may be a drawback for some. At 720 pages, it’s a hefty read, and the academic tone of several essays may feel overwhelming or slow-paced for those hoping for a more narrative interpretive style. While the anthology format is intellectually rewarding, it can at times feel uneven due to the varied voices and styles of the contributors.

Overall, The Book of Stoicism is thoughtful, thorough, and deeply informative—a strong philosophical collection that successfully showcases the enduring relevance of Stoic thought. While not always the most accessible or emotionally engaging, it remains a valuable resource for anyone looking to understand Stoicism more fully.
A rewarding but weighty read.

The Book of Stoicism is a thoughtful and substantial collection that demonstrates why Stoic philosophy continues to resonate centuries after its origins. Bringing together writings that explore resilience, reason, virtue, self-discipline, and the pursuit of inner peace, the book offers both historical perspective and practical wisdom.

What I especially appreciated is the breadth of the collection. Rather than presenting Stoicism as simply a philosophy of enduring hardship, the essays explore how its principles can shape the way we approach responsibility, adversity, character, and everyday life. The discussions of Stoicism alongside other philosophical traditions also provide useful context for understanding its distinctive ideas.

At nearly 700 pages, this is a book readers can return to repeatedly rather than simply read once and put aside. Some passages invite careful reflection, while others provide surprisingly practical guidance for navigating challenges with greater calm and perspective.

For anyone interested in philosophy, personal development, resilience, or the enduring questions surrounding how we should live, The Book of Stoicism offers a rich introduction and a worthwhile collection of ideas to revisit long after finishing it.

I've read quite a bit about Stoicism over the years, so I was curious to see how this collection would present Manly P. Hall's perspective. Rather than treating Stoicism as a list of rules for suppressing emotion, Hall explores it as a philosophy of character, self-discipline, and living with intention. I especially enjoyed the discussions about focusing on what is within our control and meeting life's challenges with reason instead of being ruled by impulse. Those ideas have remained relevant for centuries for a reason.

What I appreciated most was that the book encourages reflection instead of preaching. Some passages are more philosophical than others, but I found myself highlighting several sections and going back to reread them. Whether you're already familiar with Stoic philosophy or just beginning to explore it, this collection offers plenty to think about. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a free advance review copy.

Thought-provoking…

As someone at the beginning stages of understanding Stoicism, by the end, it felt like a must-read. Rife with information, understanding and differing opinions, this dense read included a variety of voices adding their own take on the subject. Outlining the various disciplines that contribute to stoic thought and action, meant much to ponder on topics that have been discussed for centuries.

Offering up a variety of pathways, it was left up to me to understand and take away what I wanted, making this a self-help book in a way as well. Not a light read, but a good one as my journey to understanding continues…
