This book deserves every star! Without spoilers this is truly a suspenseful & sexy mystery novel with plenty of reasons to keep you guessing all the way to the end! Not to mention, it is extremely well written by an up and coming author local to Alberta, Canada that has obviously poured her heart into every aspect of this story. What more can you ask for?!?!
Megan Jamieson's debut novel is a true page turner that keeps you guessing until the very end. Maeve, an eager, newly-trained forensics homicide detective, moves to a small town in Oregon to begin her career. Initially, she is disappointed to be assigned to a cold case instead of an active investigation, but the case turns out to be much more than she or her handsome partner, Ben, bargained for. Ben is a seasoned detective from the small Oregon town, and though he is intimately connected to many of the people involved in the case, he is happy to have a new set of eyes, especially a beautiful and smart pair of eyes, digging through the case once again. Maeve's cunning and relentless determination lead to shocking discoveries that just keep unraveling one mystery inside of another. The twists and turns are cleverly disguised and the red herrings are so believable, it is impossible to put down.
Twisted officials, perversions, and a trail of impossibly connected and unsolvable crimes lead readers through The Ties That Bind Us, Megan Jamieson’s debut novel. I was left wondering how each body and disappearance could be explained. Tantalizing clues lent even more mystery to the situations the author’s detectives found themselves in, urging me to read on. The novel’s climax somehow did connect the dots and satisfied the anticipation for a solution that built throughout the story. -Scott Eveloff MD, author of Do Not Resuscitate and The Golem’s Holocaust
The Ties That Bind Us is a well-crafted slow-burn police procedural that kept me guessing. A complex cast of characters, each with their own flaws and peculiarities, builds an undercurrent of tension that makes every interaction feel charged. At times, the story evokes the chilling atmosphere of The Silence of the Lambs, with the author unraveling the mystery and revealing the villain in a way that made me audibly gasp. Dark, atmospheric and haunting, The Ties That Bind Us is as moody and relentless as a rainy Oregon night. I loved it.
In small towns, the dynamics of policing boundaries become fluid. This fine debut by Megan Jamieson reflects that world. As protagonist Maeve begins her new job as a forensic detective in the small town of Grants Pass, Oregon, she has a lot to learn, especially about the deep connections behind the town’s still unsolved disappearance of a popular woman.
With her new partner Ben’s help, Maeve must uncover the many layers of relationships and cover stories that run deep and confuse even the most astute investigator. Then the story takes an interesting and unusual turn…
I was not ready for how obsessed I’d be with this book. Dark, twisty, seductive, and unpredictable—this is everything I love in a mystery thriller. The writing is so smooth and the characters are so real, relatable and complicated in the best way. Couldn’t put it down. Easily one of my favorite 5 star reads!!
I very much enjoyed this first novel from Megan Jamieson. Carefully plotted, with engaging characters, the novel benefits from great atmosphere, pacing, and some darker elements. I love the setting in the Pacific Northwest, definitely a good tie in to some key plot points. Main character Maeve, is well drawn with an interesting back story that would be great to see developed in a further novel.
I bought this from the author at a book event because I love supporting other authors and the title grabbed my attention. I genuinely enjoyed this read. So much so that I stayed up waaaaayyy past my bedtime finishing the last 100 pages of the book because I HAD to know what happened. Great story building and character development. I suspected EVERYONE.
Grabbed this book mostly to support a new local author, but was not disappointed at all! I read the entire thing in less than 24 hours because I could not put it down! I needed to know how it would end. Absolutely recommend this book for a quick easy mystery novel! 10/10
Terrific first novel. Super pace, great suspense and mystery. The only thing this book needs is another round of editing; both grammatical and typographical.
An unreal novel by a new author! It’s dark, twisty, spicy, and thoughtful. The characters are well developed with real-world issues and themes. It’s a page turner and must read for any murder mystery fans!
