A journey through the soul of the women that forged America.
What qualities imbued the spirits that opened up the wild new territories of America? Confidence, recklessness, empathy or brutality, all coursed through the veins of the brave souls that ventured into the unknown. Often overlooked, were the women who like their male counterparts, played an equal role in opening up the vast inhospitable land. Triumphs through hardship, horrors, and the exaltation of nature's beauty were borne equally by men and women alike.
Refusing to be belittled, broken or sold, Kate is a spirit true to herself and true to the women who were the backbone that opened the New World.
Fleeing her peasant life in Scotland through the night, seventeen-year-old Kate, along with her parents and siblings, board the Marimon in Liverpool for the journey to America. Equipped with a passion for books, basic medical knowledge and keen with a rifle, Kate forges her way across the prairies embracing the beauty of the frontier world as well as its hardships. Battling cholera, a broken heart, and life in a brothel, she challenges both men and beast to remain true to her spirit, unbound and unbroken.
Her story is a female ‘Revenant’ with a love of books, an abundance of creative spirit, and unparalleled bravery.
I am a lover of Great Danes, road cycling, and classic cars. I split my time between solitary literary pursuits, working with my designer wife on home restorations and supporting our son’s football careers. I am a wanderer. My boys and lovely partner of more than three decades, have been dragged from one adventure to another. Much in the same way I was as a youth. I was born in Barotseland formerly part of Northern Rhodesia and now a reluctant part of Zambia. Through many countries in North America , the Orient and Europe I have now (temporarily) come to rest in Spain.
When wandering, a vast array of abilities becomes stowed in one’s baggage, my rumpled duffel bag is no different. From performing Shakespeare and Tennessee Williams, to teaching and heavy equipment operation, even to pig and dairy farms, high-end restaurants and period home renovation, all add spice to the dish that is me. (One thinks too many chefs ruin the dish?) Perhaps – it is what it is. I dwell in possibility. That is why I love to engage stories and explore what might ‘be’. I hope you enjoy the journey, we are all in search of 'the great perhaps.'
