I really enjoyed this book, these characters showed strength and caring and growth. I would recommend this book and give it 5 stars
I have read all of Evan's books but this is my favourite. We met Cash in his sisters book therefore we know his backstory and his struggles but four years later he is really making something of himself.Tessa now what a strong girl...appears younger than her years in lots of ways...naive in some ways but so very worldly in others...a tragic life and innocent in the way of men.Now often when we meet females that innocent it feels contrived but this time...no...Tessa was a beautiful soul and it was simply right it was this way...shy and unsure...just waiting for someone like Cash. I have never felt such connection between characters before and their friendship and subsequent relationship was truly an amazing thing...Cash had demons but it didn't turn him into the proverbial manwhore that we see so frequently...if anything he had 'issues' and this was realistic and a refreshing change. Their relationship hit stumbling blocks and following this was something that I felt may happen but it still took my breath away when it did...I hurt...I cried,no sobbed and I wanted to hug Tessa but she had an amazing support network and Cash...and they all came through for her. A truly breathtaking book and I devoured every last word. Oh and by the way Evan...Jonathon...I so want his story and how he got his HEA...even a teeny novella would be fineby me Lol!
Oh Cash!!!!! You are such a sweetheart!!!!! He's made the book boyfriend list.
Cash and Tessa are such a sweet and cute couple! The innocence of their relationship was perfect! I loved the old fashioned courting.
Now Abby... Here is where this rating lost 1 star for the review. The secret of Abby... When this all started to play out, I had to stop and back up in the reading. I thought, "Did I miss something"?
This book spends almost the first 2/3 developing a sweet romance between the H Cash and h Tessa. The angst is low, the romance is sweet, the sex is hot, and all the while you know that at some point the black moment is going to happen. You just aren’t sure what is going to cause it.
Good news: There are no pesky ow’s or om’s. The characters never have need to be jealous, because their love is true…even when things turn dark there is no doubt that love is still there. Their personal demons have to be fought before they can truly embrace a life together.
Bad news/triggers: The h was raised by an alcoholic father who physically abused her. The abuse is heartbreaking and graphic(never sexual, physical only)You get a taste of it in the beginning of the story, and more in the last 1/3rd.
The H is a recovering heroin addict. He has been clean for over 4 years. In the last 1/3rd of the book he shares with the h the lengths he would go to for his fix. Again this is not pretty and even though he talks about if for a few pages anyone dealing with substance addiction may want to stay away.
The story:
Tessa is a 27 year old virgin who has been living with her widowed brother and niece since she was 18. (The brother Jonathan gets his story next Finding Hope) Her brother was unable to get her out of the dad’s house until she was legal. He knew his father was abusive, but he had no idea to what extent he was abusive with the h. She hid it from him to keep him safe and to prevent herself from getting worse beatings. She also has a terrible lisp that her father refused to get help for. Instead he calls her retarded and makes fun of her. Needless to say, the h had trouble making friends and was the butt of cruel taunting from others through the years.
One day as she is singing at the top of her lungs in her Jeep a motorcyclist rides up next to her and smiles. It is our hero Cash.
Cash is 30 and 4 years sober. He has his own handyman business, but he is also a talented musician. He has also been celibate for the last 4 years and has never had a healthy relationship as his girlfriend of choice has been heroin. He is introduced in the previous book Begin Again which is the story of his sister. The h stirs something in him that he has never felt before and other parts of him start waking up as well. He runs into her at the coffee/bookshop she manages and begins to meet her for lunch. He misses one lunch and the h figures he just felt sorry for her, but nope, he comes back the next day looking for her to tell her work kept him away. He starts taking her on dates. He senses she is fragile, so he takes things slow. She is getting all sorts of feelings herself, and she tells him she is a virgin. He assures her that he will never push her to do anything she doesn’t want to do. They continue to date and meet each other’s families. A few weeks into the relationship the h decides she wants to take their relationship to the next level and they do. Their relationship goes on sweetly, but the H knows he needs to tell her of his addiction. He tells her about it(without much detail, that comes later) and she accepts him with open arms. They share their I Love You’s but the H still feels that he is not good enough for the h.
Then the black moment comes when a friend of his relapses and ends up dying. The friend had a wife and kids. I think the H starts to worry that something like this could happen to him. In his grief at the funeral of his friend and his need to help his friend’s children he “forgets” about the h. She is left to walk back home without her purse or coat, because they are locked in his truck. Understandably she is upset but the hero ends up taking it much harder. Our h knows he is struggling, but the H’s actions just reiterates to him that he is no good for her and she deserves better. He breaks up with her. She takes her puppy and goes back to her brother’s. The H’s friends and family tell him he is being stupid, but he thinks he is saving the h from himself. (There is never a relapse for him, so no worries there)
She keeps reaching out to the H through texts and will often use music links to him that expresses her feelings. He ignores. She puts up with 2 months of silence with him and texts him one last time. He realizes that he wants her back and hopes he hasn’t left it for late. The last 2 songs she texts him are basically good-bye songs. So he puts operation win back Tessa in place, but before he can act on it, the h’s past catches up with her. Her dad pays her a visit and folks it is hard to read.
The event gets the h and H back together and after some physical and emotional healing, the H and h come full circle. There is a very nice epilogue. I love that the h and H got their happy ending. They deserved it.
Another thing I like about the book are all the song references throughout. Many of my reviews have song lyrics that I reference. In one of my reviews, I almost exclusively used Tom Petty song lyrics to tell it. Tom Petty was referenced in this book a few times so it put a smile on my face. (There was references to Ed Sheeran, The Great Big World, The Fray…and more!) Loving music like I do, this was a cherry on top!
I loved Tessa. There are people that just radiate kindness and light and she was definitely one of them; just ask anyone who came in contact with her. Cash has worked really hard to get where he is in life, but takes each day as it comes. This was a great story. I loved seeing more of Journey and Dylan.
I hope the author is thinking of giving us Jonathan and Shannon story.
One Day at a Time was such a sweet story! I literally read this book in one sitting and could not put it down, I was doing cooking, doing dishes and putting the kids to bed reading this book.
Tessa is the picture of innocence, so sweet and caring even through what she endured as a child. As if the abuse wasn't enough also going through life with a speech impediment that made her an easy target to bullies. She has been dealt a crap hand all of her life and finally stumbled upon her little piece of happiness when she meets Cash.
Cash is not without his own demons. He is a recovering addict who is literally taking his sobriety one day at a time and those days happen to get easier once he meets sweet Tessa.
This story follows along their courtship and yes, they actually court, the struggles to get through their own insecurities in order to open up and trust another. It is beautiful and sad and heartbreaking at times but it is so worth it! I spent most of the book fighting back tears as so much of this book hit home with me. You could FEEL the struggle and emotions that each of the characters were going through and it will change you.
NOTE** This is book 4 in the Starting Over series but it can also be read as a standalone. I didn't realize it when I signed up for the ARC but I was able to read and keep up with the story without a problem. This book actually made me want to go back and read the first three!
I love this interlocking series. I really enjoy getting a new story line and also getting to catch up on characters that I've already read about and getting an update on their lives.
Cash had a past full of grief and wrong choices that he has spent the last 4 years sobering up from and making it up to the people around him that were hurt by his actions. Now that he is getting his life on the right track and things are finally looking up for him he finally starts thinking about a future with possibilities and possibly some happiness. Although no matter how much good he does now or how straight his life is he can never get back the one thing that means more to him then anything, his daughter, who is now being raised by his sister and calls her and her husband mommy and daddy.
Tessa has lived her life in fear until she turned 18 and her older brother came and saved her from the daily hell she was living in at the hands of her father. From that day on she lived with her brother and helped him raise his daughter after they lost her mother to cancer. Until the day that Cash strolls into her life and makes her want something for herself for a change.
They both have demons in their past but they both find in each other the happiness and hope for a great future. All they have to do is admit their demons to each other and find a way to keep them in the past and out of their future...
This was the book that drew me to the series with its cover. I had debated just reading this book as the series follows different characters, however I'm glad I borrowed them all and read them in order. There is a lot of overlapping and it did give background information in more detail.
One Day at a Time was definitely the best in the series for me. There was a clear progression in the author's writing over the series and I found this book to be paced better, kept me hooked the most, and felt most engaging. I thought things flowed better and the writing felt more natural and realistic.
I found the characters easy to engage with and their dark pasts that seeped into their present broke my heart. There are some quite brutal scenes that weren't easy to read, but I think the author dealt with the tough subjects well.
There is only one criticism I have with this series and that's the characters don't vary in their speech and mannerisms that much. A lot of the same phrases are used throughout all four books and I just wanted a bit more originality in their personality.
Overall though, I loved Cash and Tessa's story. It's my favourite so far and was the most emotionally engaging. I'm hoping that Jonathon get a book next.
Tessa is an amazing woman who has had a rough life. Since she was little she's been told she was nothing. Her brother rescued her when she was eighteen and took her in at his house. She now a manager for a bookstore and is scared of men. One day at lunch Cash came by and noticed her at the cafe. He felt something just looking at her. They had lunch everyday together until he finally asked her on a date. They had a blast together if it was going out or staying in. They fell for each other very quickly and Tessa met and fell in love with his family. But there were a few secrets both of them had that hopefully wouldn't break them. Cash gets scared and calls things off. A tragic incident happens and Cash is called by her brother. He drops everything and runs to her to her but is it to late or can he show her that she truly is worth something to him?
This is such a sweet romance that you can't help but love. Cash and Tessa are so sweet together and he does everything he can to make her feel loved and wanted. But both have dark paths that they haven't worked through yet. Just when Tessa thinks that life couldn't be any better, her past comes back and rattles her safety cage. Cash can't get over what he did in the past and feels like Tessa deserves better, but can he handle leaving her for good? When tragedy strikes and Tessa needs Cash the most, will he be there? WARNING: This book turns into a tear jerker!!! This was a great read, it was a little slow at times and I think needed some different wording in parts so it ran smoother but all in all a great read!!
A heart melting book. Even though I was doubtful about this book specially after Begin Again, which did not impress me much. But, I ended up loving Cash and his attitude of one day at a time, but I was also hurt by seeing him punishing himself for his past. The scenes of him with Violet were too painful. At the same time Tessa was an amazing woman. She had the courage to move forward in life by defeating her demons. I loved how she never gave up on Cash and how forgiving and understanding she was. It was a wonderful read. So yes I am looking forward to more books by Evan Grace.
Oh my days! I loved this book! It feels like forever since I read the first book in this series, had my heart broken and fixed back together and now I have read Cash's story. Evan, I don't know how you do it but please don't stop! Cash has been through some difficult, often traumatic time but four years after reuniting with his sister, he seems to have things straightened out and going in his favour. It's not been an easy journey to here and then he finds his ray of sunshine. Tessa's life hasn't been any easier either and she has experienced things that could of broken her.........together they fit........but before they find their HEA........go one click this please.....I have been through the wringer whilst reading this but in a good way!
Evan Grace has done it again! This is a great addition in this series. I'm glad Cash found his true love who accepted him and loved him for all his flaws. His past was really bad but that is the life of a drug addict. That was written beautifully and in the best light. Tessa who was basically an angel had her own hardships. Child abuse can really scar a child and an adult. I hope I get a book 5 in the series maybe Luke's brother?? Just saying Evan Grace.
We meet Cash in book 3 as he’s Journey’s drug addicted brother but it’s now four years later and he’s finally turned his life around when he meets shy Tessa whose got her own dark past that has made her grow up keeping to herself. It was definitely a slow burn novel, it was beautifully paced and i loved that the characters developed a real connection with each other before jumping straight to the sexy times. It was a cute read and if any book deserved the cliched tag of Starting Over than this one is it. Second chances are always my favourite kind to read and I’m glad Cash got his HEA.
So I loved it. There were some frustrating parts such as it gets tedious when a character has a secret and they "just know" they should tell their partner but they let days/weeks/months go by. Also the separation felt like a plot device, 2 months, he decides he wants her back but has to work on his "plan" before he can act she gets hurt.
However, this sweet couple were so loving and so sweet and i loved them both. Except the little bit of boneheadedness.
This book is by far one of the best stories I have ever read. It made me cry quite a few times but it is such a heart wrenching story. Emotions are in high gear in this one. This author has been the reason I read at all, she has taught me how important it is to make time for yourself and relax with a great book. She has introduced me to so many authors I love to read. Thank You Evan Grace!!!
Nice! I was hoping the series didn't end before Cash got his story and I wasn't disappointed! As with the other stories in this series, the character development was great for the main characters as well as the supporting cast. The story arc was pretty engaging and the sexy times were pretty hot. Definitely worth the purchase price :)
Evan Grace has written an emotional heart wrenching love story!! I loved Tessa and Cash and how perfectly they fit together!! This story was not your typical, happily ever after love story, oh no this is a real life love story! It gets hard, ugly and scary but all love story should shake you up! And this story does exactly that!!
Cash's story was real, emotional and heartbreaking but I loved it. The story dealt with issues that people really face and have to overcome. This was a story of how friendship and love saved two people! Awesome book!
It was my first book from the series and I really liked it. 4 stars, because the whole time I was more interested in Tessa's brother and this Shannon girl than the leading couple :D I really hope that there will be a book about those two.
This is Cash's story. I loved reading about him and Tessa and them overcoming some big obstacles together. I also loved seeing how Cash's relationship with his sister , Journey, had vastly improved.
Takes someone special to break town the unseeing self worth. The did that for each other. Life happen and one pulls away, the other never give up. "His reward was draped over his body and he planned on spending the rest of his life showing her what she meant to him." Love works wonders!
A beautiful love story of starting over. It's a good thing that Cash and Tessa found each other when they needed one another. I highly recommend this book.
