Her car is packed, and she’s ready to escape. But after getting caught by a spell, can she embrace unwanted magic before the next death is her own?
Sage Wyatt is freaking out. When a text for help permanently traps her in this cursed town, the guilt-ridden ex-slayer learns shocking news about her heritage and bound powers. But there’s no chance to catch her breath as she agrees to investigate why coven witches are disappearing, and one ends up dead.
Realizing vampires are involved, Sage teams up with friends and tracks the clues to a ruthless vampire from her former flame’spast who has just shown up to cause all types of trouble. And as more victims are found dying, the dedicated hunter races to stop the carnage while dealing with another huge headache… the demon duke of hell is still on the loose and her special gifts may be their only chance to stop his evil plans.
Can Sage unbind her abilities in time to save everyone, or are they all screwed?

I have received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, my opinions are my own
This was ah-ma-zing! It takes up where book 1 left us and we get immediately thrown into the action again, and what an action and adventure it is! I’d never heard of this author before reading book 1, How to Demolish a Demon but I'm incredibly happy to have stumbled upon her and to have gotten the chance to read an ARC for her!
This book(and book 1) really invoked the nostalgia of the high action and sleuthing of the books I read in my teenage years and I love all the representation of chronic illness and chronic pain without making anyone appear pitiful or whiney.
Urban Fantasy has always been near to my heart since it’s usually pretty high in action and adventure but with a framework that feels familiar enough to easily sink into the story itself instead of getting bogged down in worldbuilding for 50 pages (don’t get me wrong, those can of course also be amazingly fun and rewarding to read).
Most of the time it might be a side character that stays out of the fight but I love that in this it’s not just a barely there side character that doesn’t fight but the ones actually on the forefront. I also really appreciate the accurate info of having to forgo some things just to be “charged up” enough for others, since it's very accurate.
~I should probably say that I’m basing this on my own feelings etc and that I have chronic pain myself sadly so I'm not just spewing randomness without knowing what I’m talking about but it can of course be different for different people.~
Although I suppose since the author has these issues herself, it would be strange if they were portrayed inaccurately lol
I like how our main character grows throughout the book(s) and slowly learns to accept that not every bad thing is her fault and that she isn’t solely responsible for the wellbeing of all others, although she keeps struggling with that of course, since it’s not exactly an overnight fix.
How to Ruin a Ritual starts of when Sage and Grimm are getting ready to leave town and get tricked into staying in town passed the curse timer( I suppose this could be a spoiler, but I mean come one, it makes sense this would happen for the story to progress so I don’t really find it a spoiler) Grimm is one of the coolest sidekicks to date because hello, surfer dude ghost cat sounds awesome and his antics are funny.
Sage herself is an interesting character with lots of facets to her personality and while being very strong she also has a lot of flaws which make her feel more real and more human, even though she isn’t a human, but you get what I mean.
Her slowly letting more people in her life, trusting more and accepting herself more is really nice character growth and makes her a pleasure to read about.
The cliffhanger ending to this one is a real nail biter and I honestly cannot wait for the next book in this series, bring it on!
Absolutely fantastic read, run don't walk to read the Wicked Rift series 🔥 I ate this one in a day!
Ever since I read book 1 a few months ago I've been impatiently waiting for How to Ruin a Ritual. And I have to say that this one's even better than How to Demolish a Demon!
Sage is still adorable, brave and fighty even when she's a little naive but her kind heart makes up for almost anything else! She's definitely a homeschooled kid though and continues to make a bunch of mistakes which feels realistic but also I feel like she's bound to get an upgrade in that department very soon.
I loved the new characters that pop up in this book. Can't reveal too much for fear of spoilers but trust me - the new additions are amazing! There is a lovely surprise for everyone who read the short story Odd Ghost Out (and for everyone who hasn't read it - what are you waiting for? It's free when you sign up for Emmy's newsletter).
The world building is getting richer and full of details - I actually enjoyed that side of the book very much. It shows that the author put a lot of time and love into pouring over the details of exactly how she wanted this universe to work and I appreciate that a ton.
The bad guys are worse than ever and I appreciate that for the sharp eyed reader the plot twists and reveals are guessable because we got enough bread crumbs dropped in advance.
I loved the Luis, Michael, Grismelda and Vale side stories - we got a lot of details confirmed that were only vaguely referenced in book 1.
All the details of Sage's parentage and background were amazing too! Can't wait to read more about how that story would be twisted.
And let's not forget about the ending?? Because that was chef's kiss 🤌 I'm so invested in this series now!
The only thing I can complain about in this book is that the good guys continue to let people go who were just actively trying to kill them and then getting surprised when the same people in fact come back and cause them a ton of trouble... I mean... Yes, that's what you should expect? Hope they get a bit wiser soon.
Otherwise I can't wait for How to Gut a God, I'm in the edge of my seat craving to have it in my hands asap!!!

Thanks to the author and Book Funnel for providing me with an ARC! All opinions are my own ❤️
I loved this second book in this series. There was so much going on in this one; the action just never stopped, but it never felt like it was too much either.
Sage and Grimm are getting ready to finally leave Raven's Hollow, but a last minute text causes them to miss the deadline and they're now trapped within the town's boundaries. I think there was definitely a part of Sage that didn't really want to leave anyway - she has finally found some friends who make her feel included for the first time in years.
Without trying to give too much away, Sage finds out more about her heritage and what that might mean for her powers. There's a duke of hell on the loose, who is desperate to break the curse on the town, so he can rampage all over the Earth. Cade has an unwelcome visitor as well. And the witches now want Soni and Sage's help! And if Sage can get through all of this with her life intact, then she can cope with anything.
Sage is a great character - she finally gets a diagnosis on what is causing her pain and tries to deal with it as best as she can. She is strong and so determined and will continue to fight another day however she can. I love that our heroine is not the average teen/young adult coming into her powers and being all tough! She's genuine, struggles with her pain and her mental health as well - a side effect from her horrible upbringing, but she perseveres and always, always puts others before herself.
I love her group of friends as well - they all have their own strengths that work well together and some of these characters have their own surprises in store as well.
The twist at the end was a complete surprise - I must have missed some vital clues along the way, but I genuinely didn't see it coming, just like Sage didn't until all was revealed!
I can't wait to read the next one in this series to see what Sage and her friends do next! Now she has some other powers making themselves available to her, I can't wait to see how she uses them!
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author but this review is my own honest one! Thank you Emmy for another great read!
I received an ARC copy of How to Ruin a Ritual from the author in exchange for reviewing it; I had purchased book 1 of the series myself, and my excitement for this book is what lead me to request a review copy.
My absolute favorite thing about this series is that the vast majority of characters have depth and complexity; too often we get generic bad guys or sidekicks while only the most important characters have any depth to them. The characters that we come to know - Sage, Grimm, Cade, Somi, Grismelda, Malcolm, Briar, and so many more, have strengths and weaknesses. While they have supernatural powers, it doesn't mean that they can fix problems simply or easily, much less by themselves. Each problem can only be handled by working together, and in working together the characters grow and reveal more of themselves. Their weaknesses and flaws feel real, as if you could meet one of them.
Besides being fun, there are lot of funny moments in the book, making it overall a light, easy read.
One thing that took me out of being immersed in the book was how quickly and easily Sage's health problem was diagnosed, since I am familiar with similar diagnoses taking much longer and being more complicated to obtain. The only other complaint I have is that it ended on a cliffhanger - now I'm stuck desperately wanting to know what happens next.
I enjoyed book 1 so much, I just started into this right away. Sage is ready to leave Raven’s Hollow – she has about 5 hours before the curse keeps her there forever. When she receives a message from Grismelda asking for help, she heads off to see what she can do, accompanied by Luis. But it’s a trap, holding them in the warehouse until time is up. When she still tries to leave town, she is repelled violently and saved by Luis in his shifter form – big surprise there. Now there are a few more problems, Cade’s sire is in town and controlling him, witches are disappearing, only to show up suffering from ARC overdoses. Asmodeus is still creating havoc, assisted by many others. There are a lot of surprises in this book. I just sort of sat back and said whoa! There is also action, a lot of magic, suspense, humour and more. Sage is surprised to realize that she has made a lot of friends in town and they are all involved in helping. It is an easy, quick read that is really good. One problem, it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I don’t want to wait until the next one. Definitely an excellent read.
How to Ruin a Ritual, volume two of Emmy Teagan’s Wicked Rift series, is an urban fantasy wild ride. I think it would be possible to start the series with this book, but I strongly suggest doing yourself the favor of starting with book one, How to Demolish a Demon. In volume two, paranormal hunter Sage and her ghost feline companion are tricked into missing their chance to leave Ravens Creek and seem to be trapped there forever. From this point, action and information, including seamlessly inserted backstory, comes hard and fast in this book rife with underworld deities, vampires, witches, ghosts and the odd ghoul. Deals are being made, power is shifting and trust may be an illusion. The important thing is that Teagan’s books are so imaginative and so finely crafted that they are a primal joy to read. Does that sound like too much praise? I assure you, it is not. I read more than 200 books a year written over at least three centuries and I know when words are well put together and stories are skillfully unfolded. If you even remotely enjoy people of all kinds, genuine stories or urban fantasy, I am sure you will enjoy these books.
I loved this book every bit as much as the first, with the same OMG moments and angst that has you tugging on your hair! In the second book we learn so much more about Sage and her family, not to mention dealing with her evil brother again, as well as more about all the characters backgrounds and abilities. No spoilers, but if you enjoyed book one you will definitely disappear into the pages of book 2 and not surface until you are done. I will warn though, you will hit another ending that leaves you desperate for more 😎
Sage will even go to the doctor, who is Somi’s Dad, and get a diagnosis that I know well - I will just say that if you live with chronic illness you will understand how much I enjoy seeing it represented with such reality in these books, but also as something you are not defined by, but live with, if you know what I mean.
This book felt like action all the way for me, I had trouble putting it down when I had to be a proper adult, and it even helped to distract and calm me while waiting my turn in a hospital clinic - which only the best books can do for me. Highly recommend this series, I can’t wait for book 3, and also wish to acknowledge I was privileged to receive an ARC copy from the author, but these opinions are my honest reactions to reading this book.
Wow, I really enjoyed book 1 in this series, but I LOVED book 2!
How to Demolish a Demon set the scene, introducing us to Sage and her new found friends, and giving us a hint of her powers. Now that she is also trapped in Ravens Creek, things have really taken off. Increased peril, not only for Sage and her friends, but for other residents of the town. Asmodeus proves to be every bit as big of a problem as you might expect, the mysterious Vale is still in the background, and now there is an even bigger, badder, vampire in town.
Sage begins to learn more about both her ancestry and family ties, as well as her powers - which she needs to get unlocked, pronto! Her budding relationship with Cade hits an unexpected bump in the road, she learns much more about her friends - and there are surprises at every turn - not least the one that hits where it hurts at the end of the book! I can’t wait for book 3 to come out and can’t come soon enough!
I received an advanced copy from the author for free, but the opinions are my own.
Ohhhhh wow!! My little brain has exploded, I've destroyed my nails & I might of thrown a minor tantrum as my kindle turned to the last page!!! "Her car is packed, and she’s ready to escape. But after getting caught by a spell, can she embrace unwanted magic before the next death is her own?
Sage Wyatt is freaking out. When a text for help permanently traps her in this cursed town, the guilt-ridden ex-slayer learns shocking news about her heritage and bound powers. But there’s no chance to catch her breath as she agrees to investigate why coven witches are disappearing, and one ends up dead." Emmy Teagan's managed to tick multiple boxes of mine ...Urban fantasy ✅️Kickass FMC ✅️ Plucky sidekick✅️ Found family ✅️ Humour✅️ Plot twists jumping out left & right ✅️ Fast-paced without being rushed ✅️ There’s a special kinda magic involved in creating characters that make you feel & I've felt ALL THE FEELS in this book!! Thinking I might buy a blood pressure cuff for while I'm reading 🤣😂 Highly recommended, even if I'm chomping at the bit for my next fix already
Sage has chronic pain and chronic illness and that is so relatable to me. There are some secrets that are revealed that I was like WHAT , didn't see that coming.
I absolutely hate Gideon, but I am supposed to. I love the found family that Sage has started to trust and develop relationships with. Speaking of relationships, I was missing Cade as he wasn't as present as in the first book.
The world building is excellent.
And Grimm, the ghost cat is AMAZING!!!!!
Well written and a wonderful universe I love spending time in.
Can't wait for the next book, and more CADE please LOL
Book 1 was amazing, but Ruin took me to another dimension of mesmerized. Revelations (good, bad or mind-boggling), actions galore and the characters! Sage finally gets to know who her mother is plus that she has numerous siblings nevermaaid being a demigoddess. Adding Briar to the Raven's Creek team of friends and her brother, God of Death, Thanatos I loved. The plot thickened drastically when Liviana, sire of Kade rocked up. Witches started disappearing. Sage is struggling with her pain management. Then there's the mystery of her bound powers. To say I was transfixed till the end, is an understatement especially with the twist of Thanatos's twin, Hypnos. I just want to get book 3. I received an advanced review copy from the author and leave this review voluntary Thank Emmy this was brilliant.
I continue to enjoy this series, especially this latest. I love how Sage has chronic pain, and the author lets that be known without overwhelming the reader with it. It makes Sage more humor. But, back to the plot. In this installment, we learn a few secrets, and I was shocked by a couple. We also see more of Gideon, and I just loathe him. Good on the author for making me feel so passionate about a character. LOL! I’m hoping the next book will have more of Cade in it, because I really like him and while he’s in this one, he is not in it much for a good reason. This latest is compelling, interesting, engaging, well-written, and I can’t wait for more. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
This is book 2 in the series and I would definitely read them in order. You get so much from each book.
As Sage falls into a trap while trying to “help” her friends, she and Grimm become stuck I. The town she was trying to get out of. Things go from bad to worse when she finds that Cades sire has found him and she is not above punishing him.
There are lots of secrets unfolded in this book. Sage finds out everything is not what it seems. This roller coaster ride is full of twists and turns you don’t see coming.
Love the characters and the found family trope. Grimm is so funny and Gideon is such a turd. This author does such an amazing job with character development and storytelling. I can’t wait for book 3.
Just after barely closing the rift, Sage Wyatt prepares to leave Raven’s Creek before she can be trapped by the curse. Receiving a message that indicates a way to help the trapped ghosts, she goes to help and finds that she’s been tricked. Stuck in town, the news just keeps getting worse - Cade is avoiding her, her brother is taunting her, and witches are being kidnapped and killed. Sage learns some surprising facts about her heritage and an unexpected connection to someone already in the town. The unexpected arrival of Briar, a warlock friend, brings some much needed help in the fight against the Demon Duke, Asmodeus, and Cade’s nasty and vindictive sire. As secrets about her friends are revealed, Sage’s magic unbound, and foes neutralized, it looks like the tables might be turning. But a final surprise whammy throws it all into chaos and leaves Sage and Ghost Cat in a precarious position without allies. Will Sage’s strengthening magic be enough to change her fate?
Emmy Teagan’s second book in her Wicked Rift series takes you on a roller coaster ride of secrets, shifting loyalties, and surprising twists that will leave you gasping in the best way. The characters are so well drawn with depth and nuance. There is authentic disability and LGBTQIA rep that never panders or feels forced. For Sage, whose guilt and grief made her self isolate for so long, the connections she’s made in Raven’s Creek definitely earn the found family trope. I would highly recommend reading book 1 and the prequel novella “Odd Ghost Out” before jumping into this one. The cliffhanger ending has me on tenterhooks for the release of book 3.
I received an advanced reader copy from Ms. Teagan, and I am voluntarily leaving my review.
What an awesome second book in Emmy Teagan's Wicked Rift series. Gritty and creative...I couldn't put this down. We learn more about Sage's beginnings and friends and the inhabitants of Raven's Creek which leads to a great battle scene with some plot twists that I did not see coming. Spoiler... brush up on Greek mythology, I have a feeling it will come in handy... can't believe that we have to wait a year before book 3!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I highly recommend this book. I've really enjoyed reading the entire series (so far--I hope there's more coming,) but this story was the best yet. Pretty much all of the characters are developed further without interfering with the marvelous plotline. That's very hard to do without bogging the story down in details, but Emmy does it smoothly enough that it all flows smoothly.
After the first book and introduction to Raven’s Creek and its inhabitants, things get a bit more crazy and chaotic for poor Sage and her friends. So much drama, trouble and surprises in this one kept me laughing and glued to the end. Had to see what Sage would face and see if she could over come and how. Made for a great read and so much fun as I loved and hated all the characters.
Wow! What a whirlwind! This second installment of this story did not stop for a minute, it felt like sooo much happened and there were too many reveals to count! It's safe to say I will be itching on the edge of my seat for the next one to release!
