Arcane Galaxy #1

Chaos Protocols: A LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
An action-packed LitRPG Adventure about the exploits of the most-wanted fugitive in the galaxy and his chaotic crew.

One pilot. One Legendary skill. Zero f's given.
When talented but trigger-happy SAS Operator Andrew Rivers takes one last, off-the-books job to clean his slate, everything changes. The mission fails violently, catapulting him and his volatile cargo into an alien galaxy complete with dwarves, orcs, elves and the stuff of nightmares.

Rivers emerges, Awakened, into a Galactic System where his previous life experiences are fully rewarded, granting him the Legendary Swashbuckler.

Things go downhill from there.

Accidently getting his Arcane Nexus Advisor killed gets him branded the galaxy's most-wanted fugitive. And the Galactic Dungeoneers Guild wants him dead.

His only hope is a broken arcaneship trapped in a Dungeon that requires loads of work to make spaceworthy. To reach the stars, Rivers must gather a crew just as crazy as he is to survive.

The odds are impossible. The loot is extraordinary.

Progression has never been so messy in this action-packed and laugh-filled LitRPG Adventure from Troy Osgood, the bestselling author of The Connected System, together with Jake Malory, author of Galactic Invasion.

Born and raised in the granite state of New Hampshire, Troy is a lifelong and avid reader of comic books and novels (mostly in the fantasy, sci-fi and adventure/thriller genres). The ongoing serial storytelling methods of comic books and television has always fascinated him and provided inspiration for his writing. He’s always had a love of creating and world building and dreams of someday seeing his creations expressed across all media: books, comic books, movies, TV and even toys.

When not writing, Troy can be found outside hiking, kayaking or out back at the bonfire with beer in hand. Don’t expect to bother him during football season, especially when the Patriots are playing.

complete and utter disappointment

The premise was so good, had me looking forward to the book for months. The execution is absolutely botched between comebacks that sound like a guy winning arguments in a shower and go-make-me-sandwich jokes. The MCs badassery from the prologue only serves to give him a smartmouth and a uselessly convenient set of abilities.

So Rivers is a shoot first ask questions later kind of protagonist. His sarcasm and knee jerk "wanker" ness could definitely drive some readers away. Not everyone will be up for how much an asshole/grey the MC is. He has no problem with murder. He has no real moral compass. He is in the business of trying to save his own hide. His asshole ness does get better by the end of the book - but its in full force for the first half or so.

The System itself is pretty nice/non sarcastic, but it only gets introduced at 13%. The first part of the book is all on Earth. Even after the system is introduced, it doesn't really affect the book in any strong way. He uses the abilities sparingly.

The action is solid, with excellent description. I believe that the protagonist is lucky - not author gifted, which is quite the feat to pull off.

I really enjoyed the by play between Bluey and Rivers. Sometimes Rivers does things that doesn't make sense to me, but as a character he is pretty consistent.

There is ALOT of swearing (over 340 "fucks" over the book). That works out to over 11/chapter. lol

I enjoyed all the little references :) Like "I'm too old for this shit" or "Prisoner 24601" etc. Not explict, but still fun to see.

The MC Rivers is a Swashbuckler, making him the coolest kid on the planet!

Ohhhh! Myyy! This is fun, Fun, FUN! And I absodamnlutely love that. I love all the action. It felt like a military action book had an affair with a fantasy litRPG adventure. Which in my book is way cool! But Andrew Rivers, Rivers to be exact is the epitome of a classic bad boy! A hard talkin' man. I'm not quite sure about how much I like him. Although again he's a Legendary swashbuckler, which again is really cool! How can you not love Errol Flynn in the classic movie Captain Blood!!! Here's the deal Rivers took on the task of locating and stealing an unknown item from another government. Things went FUBAR during the retrieval and after all things happen, Rivers finds waking up and quickly realizes that he's now on Elystiar with a system and magic!
So yeah grab the book to find out what happens next. You're gonna be in for the ride of life. Which is hella fun!

Here's a couple of quotes:

"My life was now in the hands of something that felt like it came free with a box of cereal."

"I’m going to go with ‘sonic screwdriver’ for the sake of brevity"

fun start to a promising new series

I was in a bit of a book hangover when I came across this book. It sounded right up my alley so I bought it and started reading. I absolutely fell in love with this book and am bummed that it had to end. It’s heavy into sci-fi with some LitRPG elements. No endless stat dumps or info dumps on the various stats. I am anxiously waiting for the next book to drop!

Great start to the book! Too many books go straight to the isekai moments. I love that we got to know the MC before entering the game world. This opportunity is so typically skipped in this genre that I found this refreshing. It helped dive more fully into the story because I got to know the MC first. Great character building and a fun plot. I will definitely read the next book.

Do you like snarky one-liners? Do you like MCs that roll the cast of Expendables and Borne into one while making stupid sex / sexist jokes as witty banter? Do you want to do that In Spaaaaace?

Feels like the authors tried to hard to be edgy and make a badass MC, but just ended up dumping everything into a blender and turning it on high. Wants to be Guardians of the galaxy and misses.

full send it energy

Witty, chaotic with high stakes. It gives guardian of the galaxy vibes but less peter quill and more Han Solo. Andrew rivers is cocky yet delightful and I literally can’t wait to see how this series unfolds
