In the aftermath of ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM, with Doom's castle empty and masterless, the superpowers of the world race to claim and control the untold power and technology that await inside. But when an explosion sends them all plummeting into a dungeon labyrinth that none of them knew was there, what began as an arms race becomes a terrifying game of survival. Who, if any, will survive? And what horrors lie within the DUNGEONS OF DOOM?

Oh my god Charles Xavier?? Where have you been loca?
My continuing aim this year is to try and read more weekly comics on the week they are released. How easy is it to access a new/ongoing series? Do they work as individual issues or are they meant to be read as trades collections?
My first read for 14 Jan, was this one on the basis it was a first issue, the writers are solid and I quite like Doom. Perhaps I should read the solicits more carefully because Doom isn't even in the comic, although in fairness his dungeons very much are. It reads very much like a comic that's so embedded in the marvel universe and narrative that in of itself it feels like a bridge between one event and several new ones (there's at least one X-Men story being set up). For me, it felt more like it should have been a free comic book day or bonus strip added to flagship/connecting titles eg X-Men, Hulk and Black Panther, as it feels like a sampler/tease for various titles. One bizarre thing in the non story content is how this book appears to fall under the Spider-Man editorial umbrella - I couldn't spot a single connection to Spider-Man or his cast of characters so I was non-plussed by that.
Setting aside my feelings on how this should have been bonus content there are several positives about this comic. The first is that it's somehow accessible despite all the ties and set ups and I genuinely think there's a good military comic in here, especially with the various factions trying to take advantage of the void left by Doom's absence. This is like a crime power vacuum on an international level and Doom attracts both scientists and occultists. The soldiers feel like soldiers and not just nameless superheroes too (I know at least one of the writers has experience in the military so this may explain the added authenticity?). The dungeon crawls remind me of video games and some of the "love, death and robots" episodes focusing on soldiers/raids. In this sense it feels quite different for a marvel comic and the writers really mine the richness of the marvel universe to create a story with genuine depth in terms of interested parties.
The artwork suits the war/horror elements well and while I appreciate everything being dark to add a sense of realism it detracts from actually being able to see what's going on. Several artists are involved but they work well together so it isn't too jarring as they move from one to the other.
Because it feels more like a series setting up other events, I'm not that interested in continuing this series as it feels like it will lead me into having to follow several other titles - something I'd rather avoid. If any of the threads turn into something that appeals I can just chase it up in those specific titles. Again, I can imagine if I had the time, money, and general knowledge of the entire marvel output I'd probably enjoy this a lot. I think they could be onto something with the military action within the marvel universe.
Overall 2/5 Writing 3/5 Art 3/5 Will I read the next issue? No Did I need to read previous issues/series? No Will I read previous issues? N.A. unless you count the "one world under Doom" event.
Idk what it is, but Marvel comics just aren’t as fun and visually appealing as the DC comics I’ve read recently. Like the story of this was intriguing, but it wasn’t anything visually striking. Idk, could just be me, but seeing soldiers climb out of rubble for about half an issue wasn’t super exciting. I did like the concept of the different teams all being trapped in one place though, each trying to find their way out before the others.
I understand that this was probably just meant to introduce some new, twisted version of the Avengers. We definitely saw one guy get a quasi-Thor introduction, and then there was a Wakandan character introduced at the end.
But, damn, was that bad. My eyes skimmed over the first two or three pages before I remembered I was reading a comic. This was just not engaging at all. Total misfire.
